The KC Royals are not doing well right now. What is the solution? Jacob and Tejay have some ideas.
Transcript
00:00over because now we get to talk about the Royals swept on the road against the
00:05White Sox starting pitching is falling apart here.
00:10Not good.
00:12Um, I'm a little concerned all of a sudden, you know, we start the week game
00:16and a half back feeling good.
00:19All of a sudden now they are in last place in the AL central four and a half
00:23games back and the wheels do feel a little fall offy right now.
00:30Um, you've got Walker who you hope dearly can be your stopper tonight.
00:35But then after that, you go into this weekend series against the Cardinals
00:39and you're running out Noah Cameron and Steven Kolick.
00:44Yikes.
00:45Uh, yikes.
00:47Now the Cardinals, you know, you're not facing anybody that like lights out here.
00:53Three righties.
00:54So at least Jack Caglione can play.
00:57That's, that's handy.
00:58Um, I just don't know.
01:01You want to know a stat?
01:03Annie Rogers posts last night, post out last night, last eight games for the
01:08Royals starting pitchers.
01:09How many quality starts?
01:11What do you think?
01:12In eight games?
01:13Don't look at the scores.
01:15Uh, off the top of the head.
01:21Walkos walk is going tonight.
01:23So he would have only pitched in one of those games.
01:25So there's one.
01:30I think that's a good one in there too.
01:32I'm going to say two.
01:33Nope.
01:33One.
01:34And he was walk us.
01:35You're right.
01:35He would like seven scoreless.
01:37That's the only quality stars that they've had in the last eight games.
01:39And this, like how it's so insane.
01:43They win five.
01:44It's literally last year.
01:45They win five games and then lose six of eight.
01:48Like, how does that happen?
01:52Well, you know, it's easy.
01:54And Rick says the same thing.
01:55It's the exact same team as last year and scare you a bit, but not a playoff team.
01:59I don't think it's the exact same team as last year in some ways.
02:04The roster does look similar, but I think we should be projecting growth from a player
02:11like Jack Caglio.
02:13But now Q is doing everything he can to get in Jack Caglio's head, like everything you
02:19can do to a young player that you wouldn't want to do.
02:22That's what they're doing right now to Jack Caglio.
02:24Could you imagine how frustrating it must be right now for Jack Caglio?
02:29To be a platoon player, which is what he is on a bad team, on a bad team that needs
02:36something and you can't help him.
02:39Like, it's it's outrageous what they are doing with him, in my opinion.
02:43I know.
02:45And it's not the exact same team in a negative way because there was no way this rotation
02:51was going to be able to follow up what it had done the last two years.
02:55No chance.
02:56And we knew that.
02:57You want to know the part that drives me the most nuts is last night watching the
03:01broadcast after the game, you know, Joel Goldberg doing Royals postgame with Jeremy Guthrie.
03:07The first thing they talk about is that, man, this team just can't seem to get it figured
03:12out versus left-handed pitching.
03:13I'm like, well, golly, they try.
03:16They try every time that damn lineup comes out against the left-handed pitcher.
03:19And it's and he still doesn't work.
03:21Like, just who cares at that point?
03:23Right.
03:23Just put the guys out there.
03:25What is what is the worst thing that could happen this season?
03:29Like, what is the worst possible scenario to you?
03:32Because to me, it's not just that you have a bad year.
03:36Right.
03:36That's always been a possible scenario.
03:38That's not the worst possible scenario.
03:39The worst possible scenario is you have a bad year and you have further delayed the development
03:45of your good young players.
03:47That's the worst case scenario.
03:49Yeah, it is.
03:50Because even if you have a bad year and Cags has a year to come back the next year, you're
03:55like, OK, all right.
03:57Like, we've got the like now he's ready to hit five hole for us every day.
04:01Yeah, I'm with you.
04:02Like, yeah, I mean, it's yeah, it's bad.
04:06I don't I don't really know what to do about it either.
04:08I don't think they know either because it's not even it's not even just a Cags conversation.
04:13Like, that's the symptom of the overall problem.
04:17Yes, it is.
04:18But like, it's not even so much of like Cags development, like watching last night, like
04:23that broadcast last night, like just watch the final 20 minutes of the game and the post
04:29game show is the perfect, you know, iceberg of everything.
04:33The Royal season is being so like they get the final out and they cut to the dugout and
04:37Salvi's in full catcher's gear, just staring into the heavens.
04:41Like, what the hell is going on?
04:44Like, what is going on?
04:45Like, pissed?
04:47He's he was mad about it.
04:49And then he talked about it after the game and like didn't hold back.
04:53He's like, it's not good.
04:54Like, this is not good.
04:55Like, we've got to figure something out.
04:57Like, this is bad.
04:57Like, and talking about himself is like, I've been just awful and I've got to figure it
05:03out and all the, and like, it's not just Cags, like development wise, you know, it's
05:08Cags and Jensen, I guess.
05:10But in terms of the whole roster, like when you're pressing, it's obvious, like it's
05:15baseball.
05:15If you're pressing, you're not going to be good and they're pressing really hard.
05:18And I think that there is something to be said, you know, not to grasp at straws and
05:22things like that, but like, man, if you are the, whoever you want to say, Kyle Isbells
05:29of the world or the, the guys that don't play every day and you get put back in there and
05:34it's like, Oh, I better hit today or I'm not going to play tomorrow.
05:37Right.
05:37And then you press even harder.
05:39And then whenever you do play in your lane, Thomas or Starling Marte, like, all right,
05:43this is the, the second time I've played in the last week and we need to win bad.
05:48And it's on my shoulders because Jack Caglione is sitting on the bench behind me now.
05:52And it, it's, it's so, it just spirals worse and worse.
05:56It is.
05:57And, and look, we were three games ago.
06:00We felt like the Royals were on top of the world.
06:02I know.
06:02So I don't think you could, I, you know, you, you can't over read the bullpen gave
06:07them three scoreless innings last night before Ursa came in and gave up a run.
06:11That didn't matter.
06:12Um, you, you get to these points and it's like, you know, you know, you, you can't
06:18there are good things still happening.
06:20My, my biggest concern is the concern that I've been trying to wave the flag on all off
06:26season.
06:27I don't think they're starting pitching is going to hold up.
06:30So was that okay?
06:32Well, it was okay when their bullpen projected to be really, really good.
06:36And the offense you thought we'd see growth out of, if those things aren't happening,
06:40they're starting pitching guys.
06:43Like it's not going to be as good.
06:46What else do we need to see?
06:48Lugo broke down last year.
06:49He's a year older now.
06:52Okay.
06:52Bubich is coming off serious injury.
06:54How good is Bubich?
06:55They should have traded him last year.
06:56I'll never change my mind on that.
06:59They should have traded him last year.
07:01Not that he's not good, but like to not have take advantage of that high was, was the wrong
07:09thing to do.
07:11So now you're sitting there great about what you do feel great about Waka.
07:15And I think Lugo probably half the time will still be really good.
07:21Reagan's is hurt.
07:23Estevez is hurt.
07:24You've got an all-star caliber starter and the saves leader last year hurt.
07:29There's also a bit of realism that needs to come into play here.
07:35They're missing two all-star caliber players in an already thin spot.
07:41And so, yeah, I get it for everybody that's like, yeah, they're just not going to be good
07:45enough.
07:46That's totally possible.
07:47But they have been lucky so far that they're still right there.
07:54And are they good enough to go win some games?
07:56Of course they are.
07:57It feels like to me, the best way to put it is that like, are they good enough to do
08:02it?
08:03Yes.
08:03But like, I think of what they've shown us is that they're going to climb a pill the
08:07entire way to get there.
08:08Like, yeah, they're going to have to.
08:09Well, yeah.
08:10I mean, literally speaking of the standings of having to climb a pill to get there.
08:14But like, even, even where it stands right now, like the, you know, we talked about
08:19the new season and everything like that.
08:21Like they're going to be, they're never going to, I'll even put it out and say like, they're
08:26never going to be more than six games above or below 500 the entire way.
08:33I mean, there's six games under 500 right now.
08:35Okay.
08:36Maybe a bigger, maybe 10, 10, 10.
08:39Uh, yeah, that's fine.
08:40I'll say they're never, they're never going to be six games over 500.
08:43Uh, they, they could be six games below this, this, there is a better chance to me that
08:48this unravels and goes way South than they, they end up 10 games over 500.
08:58No, but that doesn't mean like in, on May 15th, I'm like waving the white flag on a baseball
09:03season.
09:04It's not what that means at all.
09:05I just, there are a lot of little symptoms here where you could see this spiral out of
09:10control real fast, real fast.
09:14That's what scares me.
09:16Don't do that.
09:18Right.
09:18Don't let that happen because it could at least don't let it happen until much later in the
09:24year.
09:24Here's the other elephant in the room.
09:28This is kind of what they have organization wide.
09:31They don't have, like they've called them all up.
09:35There's not much down there right now.
09:37The Royals farm system is not good.
09:39So you're really leaning into this group to get it done.
09:45You've invested.
09:46They, they have ownership and, and they deserve a lot of credit for it has invested a ton of
09:51money in this pitching staff ton.
09:54And, and it's thin ice.
09:56And if Reagan's isn't there, obviously we're seeing how important his spot is for this team.
10:02But it's, it's like, you've invested a ton of money in it, a ton of money in it.
10:07You've invested a ton of money in the lineup.
10:09Now with Michael Garcia and Bobby with junior, they they're doing everything they can.
10:14So I don't want to like be overly aggressive in like the failures of the organization.
10:20Cause I don't think that's the case at all.
10:22Have they missed a few little things here and there?
10:25Yes.
10:27Um, I don't particularly, I'm not particularly fond of the last two managers.
10:34Um, Quattro, I want to like Matheny.
10:38I could never really figure it out.
10:41Quattro, I can figure it out and I can see it at times, but now I think we're to the
10:45point
10:45where he could be doing harm long-term with the raise style or that small, like, you know,
10:54like sometimes you can ignore the splits, I think, but he's desperate to win games.
11:00So I get it to Jalen Thompson's point every week, like they're trying to win every game
11:05they play and that, but to me, that just screams of your pressing to your point earlier.
11:09Now you're just, now you're always pressing.
11:12Okay.
11:13Marte, here's your lefty.
11:15Get in there and save us.
11:16You don't get in there and drive in some runs.
11:18There's part of that.
11:19Definitely.
11:20So I don't, I don't know.
11:21I think that like, I don't, I don't know.
11:25I don't know what to say to that comment.
11:26I think that like Quattro took him to the playoffs the first year he was there.
11:31Second year, first year he was there, right?
11:33Yeah.
11:33First year he was there.
11:35What worked?
11:36How did that happen?
11:37Look at his overall win loss record.
11:39Yeah.
11:39I'm not saying that, but I'm saying, how do they get to the playoffs?
11:42This worked, this worked, the same thing worked.
11:44They had bet.
11:44These pitchers were better is what was different.
11:47You know, these pitchers who were within Waka and Lugo's case, not that Waka is still not
11:52great.
11:53They were two years younger than they are now.
11:56Reagan's came over in that trade and was lightning in a bottle.
12:00Like that way they were electric.
12:01Do you remember how bad the bullpen was that year?
12:04It was awful.
12:05It was when we started the year with James MacArthur, I think it
12:08closer.
12:09It was like, holy smokes, their bullpens bad.
12:12They go make those two trades.
12:14Both those guys are, you know, one of them was Ersig, which was, he's been electric and
12:18the other Harvey never, never could get away from his injury, unfortunately.
12:23So like, again, like holistically as an organization, I, I look at it and I say the last three years
12:29have been successful.
12:30And I think Quattro deserves credit for that.
12:33I think Colo deserves credit for that.
12:35I certainly think John Sherman deserves credit for that.
12:38So I don't want to like pull that away from him, but this year it's not like it's not working.
12:44And I'm not sure that.
12:48Well, I mean, we just saw like what can change decisions can change.
12:52It, the button pushing is not working this year and the roster is banged up and maybe
12:58not deep enough.
13:00And if this pitching rotation keeps, I mean, they gave up 18 runs and that's serious to
13:05the white socks.
13:09Like that's bad.
13:10And, and two of them were Lugo and Bubich.
13:13So what's going to happen with Colick and Cameron now?
13:16I know.
13:17Like that's your rotation.
13:19That's where it's, it feels like it's not going to happen to me is because I don't, I, and I
13:24haven't, and I've like, what are these starters going to do for you?
13:28If Lugo can't return to what he was and Reagan's hurt ain't happening, not happening.
13:35Those two guys have got to be good or, or this won't, I mean, it's not going to happen.
13:39I'm sorry.
13:40Noah Cameron was a great story last year.
13:43Steven Colick is a nice player, probably long-term, but that ain't good enough to make the playoffs.
13:51It's not, not unless you can score six, seven runs a game, which is probably why Salby is
13:57frustrated.
13:58Uh, oh, they dropped a series against the Cardinals.
14:02Is, is it over?
14:03Is it over?
14:03Is it over?
14:04No, it's, are they back or are they over?
14:06It's over.
14:07Let's see.
14:07Maybe they sweep the series against Cardinals.
14:10Then we're, and then they're only, you know, two and a half games back in the division on Monday.
14:15It could happen.
14:16We're coming back.
14:17Don't go away.
14:18We're coming back.
14:19We're coming back.
14:20We're coming back.
14:20We're coming back.
14:21We're coming back.
