00:12Hi Mazda.
00:13I'm here. What can I do for you?
00:30I'm here.
01:04Welcome to the launch of the all-electric Mazda 6e, a car that evolves the much-loved
01:10Mazda 6 hatchback into the age of electrification.
01:14The Mazda 6e will be the first of two new battery electric vehicles that will launch this year,
01:19adding to our range of PHEV, HEV, petrol and diesel powertrains that offer choice to consumers.
01:25But before we get into the details and how we got here, I went on a little trip down memory
01:31lane with Graham Fudge, our PR director, to look at the heritage and evolution behind
01:36this exciting new car.
01:39So, Jeremy, all roads lead to here.
01:41I do. I'm looking forward to this one.
01:43Me too. Do you want to drive?
01:44Cheers.
01:47So, this is the Mazda 6e, all-new, all-electric, and I guess a natural evolution from Mazda 6.
01:55Yeah, it really is. It's been quite a heritage of Mazda 6 when you think about it, right back
01:58to 2002 when we launched it, just a year after we started up Mazda UK, and it really launched
02:04us into particularly the fleet corporate sector.
02:07Yeah, because you were a fleet director at the time, and we launched this in North Wales,
02:12which is where we're launching this car.
02:14Perfect timing, wasn't it? So, I had a great car into the fleet role, and yes, it sold very
02:20well. In fact, it sold 170,000 cars over the duration of the 21 years it was in the market.
02:27You know, we only stopped selling it in 2023, relatively recently.
02:31And prior to that, obviously, the Mazda 626?
02:33Yeah, the 626 was, of course, the forerunner to the Mazda 6, and we were selling around
02:385,000 a year of those. Very popular car, and we started selling that one back in the
02:42mid-70s, all the way through to 2001.
02:46When I was first at Mazda, back in the 90s, I had a 626 as my company car, and then
02:51evolved
02:52into a Mazda 6, and it was always my favorite car for motorway miles.
02:57And obviously, hatchback was the most popular body style for both models.
03:02You know, it's very much a UK thing. Hatchbacks have always been more popular than saloons
03:07or estates. It's a different matter in Germany and in other countries, but that's why the
03:11Mazda 6e is absolutely perfect for a UK audience.
03:16So now we're fully in the era of electrification, the ZEV mandate is upon us. How do you think
03:23customers are going to react to this car?
03:24Well, I think, first of all, when you look at this car, it's absolutely stunning. And,
03:29you know, we're so lucky and so grateful that it was voted World Design Car of the Year
03:34this year. And I think that's amazing, and it does kind of validate just how strong this
03:39design is. It's a form of Kodo design, but updated for the electric era. It's an incredibly
03:43accomplished car as a BEV, but the first thing they'll see is the incredible curb appeal of
03:49the car. It looks fantastic. And it's lovely that it's a hatchback in a world of BEV SUVs,
03:55so it has standout. And it's also very car-like. You've got all the controls to hand that you
03:59need, plus you've got the ribbon down the bottom of the screen which you can edit to those functions
04:05which are important for you when you're driving. Yeah, I love that. That gives me permanent buttons
04:09that work for me as the driver. I can select them myself and edit them. I've got other controls
04:13on the stalks and of course the full range of apps, you know, that we would expect on the screen.
04:18So
04:19it does everything I could possibly want. We've developed our interiors over the years quite
04:23considerably to what they are today. How do you think this measures up? I think back to our 25 years
04:29of launching cars together, Graham, I think the interiors have come on in leaps and bounds and this
04:33is the best we've ever seen. It's an incredibly comfortable environment and I think it stands up
04:38against the best in the industry. And where you can't actually find something on the menu,
04:42you do have that voice control. Yeah, that's great, isn't that? A lovely feature. And it's all
04:46really useful for the long drive we have ahead to the Frey Museum at Augsburg. Yeah, I can't wait.
04:54Have you ever been to the Frey Museum? No, I haven't. I know it's one of the best
04:57Mazda museums in the whole world so I'm looking forward to it. It is really going to illustrate how
05:02every generation of car has evolved over the years. That's just great, you know, we're launching a car
05:09into one of the few segments that's growing and just such perfect timing. It's very exciting and it's
05:14it's really a respect for the past but it's also looking towards the future. It's quite a journey
05:18we've been on. But for now, all roads leads to Germany. Let's do it.
05:34We are great in the Frey Museum in Augsburg. Indeed, and I'm sure that many of the people watching would
05:39have been here.
05:52So, Markus Jochen, thank you so much for inviting us to your incredible museum. Perhaps you could tell
05:57me a little bit about how this amazing building started. We found this building around 2011 and
06:04after then we have to restore it and start the museum in 2017. And it's a tram shed, is that
06:10right?
06:10Yes, it was built in 1897. Wow, some real history. Perhaps you could tell me a little bit about how
06:16the
06:17collection started. We found a Mazda R360 in Australia, actually. One year later we found a Mazda Cosmo in
06:26America and I think this was the really beginning of our dream and vision to collect Mazda cars.
06:32It's an incredible collection. I mean, I have to ask you, gentlemen, you must have a favorite vehicle.
06:37Which one would you pick? My favorite is, of course, the MX-5 NA. It's the Le Mans version from
06:43the UK.
06:44I love them all, of course, but the Mazda Cosmo, it was a hard job to repair the car, restore
06:50it.
06:50It's a good noise because they have the rotary engine. Yeah, I think it's one of my favorites.
06:56Thank you. So, thank you both very much for your time. We really look forward to looking around the museum.
07:00Thank you. Thank you. This is the very beginning. Look at this. I absolutely love this one.
07:07It's older than you, Graham. How tiny is it? 125 horsepower. What do you think?
07:15A 1969 Luce. Amazing, isn't it? It's quite a remarkable car. Yeah. Big engines. Yeah.
07:23This really is incredible, isn't it? The Mazda story brought to life.
07:27It is from the first ever three-wheel truck all the way up to Mazda 6E today.
07:32I mean, back in the 1970s, we were a relatively new brand to the UK.
07:36And we were restricted in volume by the Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association.
07:41And Mazda needed to establish itself in the UK.
07:43And in order to do that, we needed the car which was going to appeal to the mass.
07:47And the car which we got, of course, was the 626. And here it is, the 1970s.
07:52And then it progressed here through the 1980s and then into the 1990s.
07:56And it competed with the likes of the Ford Mondeo, the Vauxhall Cavalier, the Nissan Primera.
08:01And it stood for one thing back then, which was driving fun.
08:04And that remains core to the Mazda DNA today.
08:07The Mazda 626 was becoming a very familiar sight on British roads.
08:11But by the end of the decade, consumer expectations were changing.
08:14And the desire for better design and better driving dynamics.
08:18And that leads us on to the 2000s.
08:22In 2002, we launched this, the all-new Mazda 6.
08:26And this is an exact replica of the company car I had when I first joined Mazda back then.
08:31I absolutely loved it and embodied much of everything that the 626 had.
08:35It was a sharper design.
08:37It was a more engaging drive, very popular, tremendous start to the model line.
08:42And we moved on then in 2007, launched in Frankfurt, the second generation of Mazda 6.
08:48This was launched in the UK for around ÂŁ15,000.
08:50And it really pushed us into both the fleet segment as well as the retail segment
08:54and really set the scene for the next generation.
08:57Yeah, so then Mazda design took a bold step forward with the Shannari and Takari concepts,
09:02which previewed this third-generation Mazda 6.
09:06Now, this arrived in 2012.
09:08And in 2013, we got the estate and the saloon.
09:12And it gave way to a more refined, sophisticated and emotional Mazda 6.
09:18And it had various iterations through 2015, 2018, and finally ended in 2023.
09:34Now the story continues with the all-new Mazda 6e hatchback.
09:40Unmistakably a Mazda 6, but now evolved for the age of electrification.
09:44The basics of electric cars matter.
09:47What's the range and the charge time?
09:49Well, the Mazda 6e is competitive with a single 78kWh LFP battery combining range, performance,
09:57and charging efficiency.
09:59Up to 348 miles WLTP range, 10 to 80% charge in just 24 minutes on a 195W DC charger.
10:11258 PS rear-wheel drive and 0 to 62mph in 7.9 seconds and 290 Nm of torque.
10:21One area where we listened particularly carefully to media feedback was the level of advanced
10:27driver assistance systems activation.
10:29During early evaluations of the left-hand drive vehicles, some media highlighted that certain
10:34driver assistance features could feel overly sensitive or intrusive in everyday driving.
10:40Now at Mazda, our goal is to always deliver a driving experience that embodies the principles
10:46of Jinba Itai, that feeling of car and driver as one. So this feedback was taken seriously.
10:53As a result, Mazda engineers worked to refine the calibration of the right-hand drive Mazda 6e for the UK,
10:59ensuring technology supports the driver with subtle input. This results in a natural and intuitive
11:06balance between safety and engagement, accompanied by a subtle but adequate level of system intervention
11:12and driving experience that feels more comfortable. The systems remain fully capable of enhancing safety,
11:19but do so now in a way that is more consistent with Mazda's human-centric philosophy and our commitment
11:26to preserving the connection between car and driver. The Mazda 6e represents a modern interpretation of
11:33Mazda's Kodo design philosophy tailored for the brand's electric future. A low roofline, short-deck
11:41coupe proportions, but still a fully practical five-door hatchback with frameless doors, a bold dynamic
11:49lighting signature and at the front a new illuminated signature wing that responds during charging, even indicating charge status.
11:58Its elegant proportions, sculptured surfaces and warm inviting interior express a balance of movement,
12:05harmony and precision deeply rooted in Japanese craftsmanship. The result is an EV that remains
12:12emotionally engaging while staying true to Mazda's core design values. But it's not just us who think that.
12:21Back in April, it won the 2026 World Car Design of the Year, the third Mazda to win this title,
12:28demonstrating the strength of Mazda design.
12:31Inside, it's a clear step forward, a cabin defined by simplicity and space, inspired by the Japanese concept of
12:39Mazda 6e, with light flooding into the interior through the panoramic roof. A floating centre console enhances that sense of
12:47openness.
12:48Technology is seamlessly integrated with a 14.6-inch central display, a 10.2-inch instrument cluster and augmented reality
12:57head-up display.
12:59When we talk about the success of the all-new Mazda 6e in the UK, the fleet sector will be
13:05critical.
13:06Today, the EV market is increasingly shaped by company car drivers, salary sacrifice schemes and highly competitive business contract hire
13:16rates.
13:17For many customers, the monthly cost matters more than the list price and that's where strong residual values become incredibly
13:24important.
13:26The Mazda 6e is forecast to retain 58.3% of its value after three years and 30,000 miles.
13:33Now, that puts it ahead of key competitors, including the Tesla Model 3, the Volkswagen ID.7 and the Polestar
13:412.
13:42But why is that important? Because stronger residual values help reduce monthly leasing costs and support more competitive business contract
13:51hire offers,
13:52making the Mazda 6e an even more attractive choice for both fleets and user-chooser drivers alike.
13:58Add to that with a low benefit-in-kind taxation, impressive range, strong specification levels plus the engaging driving experience
14:06that you would expect from a Mazda,
14:08and the Mazda 6e stands out as a highly compelling choice in the growing electric vehicle market.
14:16But the most important thing is that it still feels like a Mazda.
14:20That connection between car and driver remains.
14:24The way it drives has been carefully tuned by Mazda Research Europe in Frankfurt, specifically for the UK and European
14:32drivers.
14:32And then there's the timing. The industry is changing fast. Customers are being asked to make big decisions and BEVs
14:41are reversing the decline of the D segment.
14:44At Mazda, we've always believed in choice, a multi-solution approach.
14:49So the Mazda 6e sits alongside petrol, diesel, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, SUVs, MX-5 and hatchbacks to give customers
14:59choice to fulfil the needs of their lifestyle.
15:02Priced from ÂŁ38,995 with both the Takumi and the Takumi Plus models, both under ÂŁ40,000, it brings genuine
15:12value to the D segment BEV market.
15:15And with strong practicality, including a 336-litre boot and front storage, and comfort that ensures you feel fresh after
15:24a long drive, it's built for real life.
15:28This car feels like a Mazda built for the age of electrification.
15:32It's a great driving experience and it stands out from the crowd and that's exactly what the Mazda 6e is
15:39all about.
15:40And as we've seen from the Frays Museum today, that proud heritage that we have at Mazda, that DNA thread
15:46and narrative that lives and breathes through each vehicle up to the present day, is there for all to see
15:52in the Mazda 6e.
15:53Yep, we're very proud of it. Thanks for watching and we can't wait to hear what you think about the
15:59car too.
