00:00:00They are on the start line, of course, up ahead, the Nord Curve with a big runoff where people often
00:00:07make mistakes.
00:00:08Through there at 112 miles an hour, then up to 142 miles an hour, up to fifth gear, to the
00:00:16second slowest corner on the track, the Eccleston Curve.
00:00:20Then we're into one of the fastest parts of the circuit, we flick left, and then round the long, long
00:00:25Parabolica.
00:00:26And we expect the cars to be opening the DRS systems around here as they accelerate right up to 260
00:00:34kilometers, 160 miles an hour, before the hard braking, which will bring them down into the hairpin there, first gear
00:00:43corner, just 40 miles and now 65 kms there.
00:00:47Then back on the main old straight for a little section where the corners don't have names.
00:00:54It's a fast right down into a much slower second gear left-hand corner.
00:01:02Accelerating again, going to turn right back onto the main straight and coming down into the stadium section now.
00:01:10And round the stadium section, through the famous Sachs Curve, there they go, into the Sachs Curve, that one taken
00:01:18in second gear.
00:01:21Lots of traction needed out of here.
00:01:24Accelerating then through another right-hander, which doesn't have a name, into the south curve.
00:01:31Just about 135 kms, 85 miles an hour, put you back on the main straight and past the finish line
00:01:38for glory, or maybe less.
00:01:41So that is the circuit here at Hockenheim, 4.574 kilometers.
00:01:47Our race distance tomorrow will be 40 laps, but coming up the qualifying, Dave.
00:01:52And there is the list from free practice, where it was raining as well.
00:01:58They did briefly use the DRS.
00:02:00They had the special concession to use this new tippable wing, if you will.
00:02:05And it was Mike Rockenfella, who was the fastest British fans.
00:02:09Mike, though, that know that for most of the sessions, it was actually Andy Priot.
00:02:13He dropped down to 15th, but he was fastest for much of the day.
00:02:16Yes, he was.
00:02:17And free practice wasn't without its dramas, Andrew, because we had offs for Robert Wickens, and also for Augusto Farfus,
00:02:24too.
00:02:25And there was some sort of technical fault with Marco Wittmann's car.
00:02:28Yeah, new colours there for Gary Paffett.
00:02:30I know.
00:02:30Euronics, no longer with the black car.
00:02:34Gary looking pretty racy.
00:02:36We spoke to him at lunchtime.
00:02:39He seemed to be happy with life, and his three boys here.
00:02:42He's got a motorhome this season, and he's basing himself in.
00:02:45And so the car's going out for this first of four sessions, all 22 drivers.
00:02:52And this session will last for 16, and there's been quite a lot of changes in the DTM over the
00:02:59winter.
00:02:59We've talked already about the DRS borrowed from Formula One.
00:03:03Tomorrow we will have the option tyre.
00:03:05They're not allowed to use that now.
00:03:07Just talk new tyres, you can qualify.
00:03:09Yes.
00:03:09This final four, Dave, will be able to bolt on a new set of tyres.
00:03:14He wasn't allowed to do that last year.
00:03:17So, here they are.
00:03:18We've got the famous colours of BMW Bank with Bruno Spengler, who took that championship last year.
00:03:23Remember, Paffett led the series for much of the way.
00:03:26But Spengler finally managed to grab it and look at the spray.
00:03:30And is this going to make him, Andrew?
00:03:32Because he tried so hard to win the championship.
00:03:35And as you and many others had said, that it seemed to get to him in the final stages of
00:03:39seasons previously.
00:03:41Now he's finally done it.
00:03:43He's going to be more rounded because of it, isn't he?
00:03:46More rounded because of that.
00:03:47More rounded, I think, in a way.
00:03:48Because perhaps he's a little bit more loved at BMW than he was at Mercedes.
00:03:54Right.
00:03:55He certainly stands his authority on that team.
00:03:58And BMW now up to a full complement of eight.
00:04:04Whereas Mercedes, and there you see the stern car.
00:04:07Danny Junkadella.
00:04:08Yeah, Danny Junkadella, last year's Formula 3 champion.
00:04:13Mercedes, going into this season, Andrew, if I may, you know, they've got, of course, Gary Paffett.
00:04:19Yeah.
00:04:20But when you look down the rest of the line-up, Andrew.
00:04:23It's gone from eight to six.
00:04:27Quite late on, just six weeks ago, Ralph Schumacher announced that he wasn't going to continue.
00:04:33And he's here in a role helping the juniors.
00:04:35So that meant they had to scratch their head and they put another Formula 3 driver, Pascal Wehrlein, into a
00:04:42car.
00:04:43But there's a minimal experience, really, amongst the other five drivers at Mercedes-Benz.
00:04:48A few other things we've lost over the winter.
00:04:52We've lost David Coulthard.
00:04:54We've lost both the lady drivers.
00:04:57But we have, of course, got Timo Glock, former Grand Prix driver for Jordan and others, with us.
00:05:04Most recently, of course, with La Marussia.
00:05:07And he's driving for the new team called Emtek, which is run by the ex-Ferrari and Tara Rosso engine
00:05:14man, Bernie's Nors.
00:05:15They're based in Munich.
00:05:17So, it'll be interesting to see that, you know, they hope for the pit stops as well.
00:05:21Of course, that's such an important part.
00:05:23Just looking at that AMG Mercedes, of course, one talking point from the close season is Jamie Green moving from
00:05:31Mercedes to Audi, Andrew.
00:05:33So, Gary's lost his rear gunner a bit, hasn't he?
00:05:36He has.
00:05:37Although the rear gunner tapped the rear of Gary a couple of times last year.
00:05:43But, yes, Jamie Green seems to have settled in really nicely at Audi.
00:05:47He's very happy.
00:05:48Though, there's Pascal Wehrlein, then, the Formula 3 driver.
00:05:52About two years ago, he was just in the Formula Masters Championship.
00:05:55So, very little rear experience.
00:05:58Also, we've lost Norbert Howe, the famous team boss for so many years at Mercedes-Benz, replaced by Toto Wolff,
00:06:05who is here now as the head of Mercedes Racing.
00:06:14And also, talking of team bosses, there's a change in the structure at Audi, where there is a man now
00:06:22head of DTM, and that's Dieter Gas, ex-Toyota Formula 1.
00:06:26The answer's done to Dr Ulrich, and he is in charge of the DTM.
00:06:32So, all the cars out, then, and you can see the clock ticking down, then, in this part of quality.
00:06:39Farfus, Rockenfella, the first to give us lap times for us to use as a comparison.
00:06:45They're not there yet.
00:06:471.53.076 for Farfus.
00:06:49Joey Hand with a 1.54.597.
00:06:52Watch for Spengler to jump to the top.
00:06:54He's just done a fastest middle sector.
00:06:56And, uh, Joey Hand, who was quick in the, uh, pre-season testing, the, uh, Californian.
00:07:04There's, uh, the, uh, Mercedes-Benz Bray's trust in there.
00:07:08It's, uh, Nico Rosberg, who will be, uh, here driving the DTM taxi tomorrow, I believe.
00:07:15So, we're on board with, uh, Timo Glock, then.
00:07:17Welcome to the DTM for Timo Glock, then, as Andrew was saying, uh, former Formula 1 driver in the Deutsche
00:07:22Post colors, out here at, uh,
00:07:25Hockenheim now, um, it'll be interesting to see whether, whether Timo actually gets to grips with the DTM perhaps a
00:07:33little better than the more, more, more recent Formula 1 drivers have done so.
00:07:36Yeah, I mean, one of the big things is getting your head around this qualifying.
00:07:39Yes.
00:07:40Just got this, um, very short session now.
00:07:43And, uh, then, of course, we're gonna have, uh, cars from P17 to P22 knocked out.
00:07:50They will start in those positions on the grid.
00:07:54Glock's got his head around it to begin with.
00:07:56He's fastest at the moment with a 152.468, as Dr. Mario Thiessen looks on.
00:08:00Yeah, well, he was the, uh, BMW boss, um, prior to Jens Marquardt.
00:08:06And, if I understand it right, he was the man that persuaded the BMW board to go back into the
00:08:13DTM.
00:08:13Of course, he was a boss of their, their Formula 1 operations, uh, previously.
00:08:18But, uh, Mario, nice to see him, uh, still enjoying his motor racing in his retirement.
00:08:24On board with Jamie Green.
00:08:26Oh, and a big shunt there for the Thomas Saba car.
00:08:29That's Meri.
00:08:30And that's Meri, yeah.
00:08:31Well, I'd say a big shunt.
00:08:33It damaged the left rear.
00:08:36But, um, but...
00:08:37Here it is again, Andrew.
00:08:38Yeah.
00:08:39Forward.
00:08:40Twitched on the way in.
00:08:42And, oh, that's why there was so much debris.
00:08:44He went through one of those polystyrene signs.
00:08:46But he did go into the tyres, didn't he?
00:08:48And he'd never stop rolling.
00:08:52So, he'll be into the pits at the end of this.
00:08:54There's another...
00:08:55See that green section there?
00:08:58Yes.
00:08:58That hasn't got much grip.
00:09:02And he was just a passenger then, wasn't he?
00:09:04Yeah, he was.
00:09:05And he went in quite hard, didn't he?
00:09:06Of course, these cars were so strong with their carbon fibre chassis,
00:09:10which were introduced for last year.
00:09:14So, the Thomas Saba jewellery colours switched from Gary Paffer.
00:09:18There you see some of the bodywork.
00:09:20I wonder if there's anything mechanical.
00:09:22It might just be a matter of replacing that rear section.
00:09:25But I'll have to give it a good old look.
00:09:27Yes.
00:09:28There'll be suspension under there.
00:09:31So, the car goes back into the garage area.
00:09:35And Glock at the top at the moment.
00:09:36But Fafas and Werner, three BMWs at the top.
00:09:40Now, Ekstrom, who's on the pole here last year, remember?
00:09:43Goes second for Audi.
00:09:46Rockefeller's up there.
00:09:47He was obviously quick this morning.
00:09:49Prios there.
00:09:50Tomczyk.
00:09:51Changing it.
00:09:52Matara.
00:09:52He's the only man to win for Audi last season.
00:09:57Packet down there at the moment.
00:10:00About ninth or tenth place.
00:10:03And on the bubble at the moment is Timo Scheider.
00:10:06Well, now it's Tambay.
00:10:07Timo Scheider, Junkadella, Albuquerque, Verlein, Hans-Jürgen, Apt.
00:10:13Team director up there for the Apt organization, which runs four of these Audis.
00:10:22The top four.
00:10:24Top spot, as I call it.
00:10:25Timo Scheider just gone purple.
00:10:27And a good middle sector.
00:10:28Could have a very good lap from Timo Scheider.
00:10:31Back in a black car.
00:10:33Yes.
00:10:33He's happy about that.
00:10:34Had a mare of a season last year by his own admittance.
00:10:41So Farfus Glock at the moment then.
00:10:44Andy Prio, Andrew, third fastest.
00:10:46We're watching Timo Scheider though.
00:10:48Yeah.
00:10:48Spengler on the bubble at the moment.
00:10:50But I just see Dylan, fastest middle sector.
00:10:54And Scheider goes third fastest.
00:10:57Yeah.
00:10:57I think you'll see Spengler will jump up in a minute.
00:11:00And.
00:11:02Oh, yes.
00:11:03Farfus had an off this morning.
00:11:05Yes, he did.
00:11:06Stuck it in the gravel.
00:11:08So the focus of Bruno Spengler, you can see him at work in his office then.
00:11:12Yeah.
00:11:14The Canadian driver based in the Alsace.
00:11:23Farfus.
00:11:23Whitman up there.
00:11:26Whitman who has come out of the Euro F3 series.
00:11:30And last year, Whitman was the test driver at BMW.
00:11:35Because of all the races, he didn't get to drive.
00:11:38I was going to say, how much of an end does that give him in terms of the experience of
00:11:42the car, Andrew?
00:11:43He did quite a lot of the testing.
00:11:45Yeah.
00:11:46And so a lot, I would say.
00:11:48And he was quick during the pre-season test as well.
00:11:51I think he topped one of the days or even two of the days.
00:11:53Jamie Green now goes quickest to 1.54.20.
00:11:56Oh, there is the new look, Jamie Green, if you like.
00:11:59There's Mike Rockenfella.
00:12:01A new combination of Green and Audi after eight years of Mercedes.
00:12:06And before that, of course, he won the Formula 3 championship with Mercedes-Benz.
00:12:11So, with just under six and a half minutes remaining in this first part of qualifying, it's all changing.
00:12:17And Paffix out at the moment.
00:12:19Werner out.
00:12:21Werner had a good season last year, his first year in DTM.
00:12:26Taurus out.
00:12:29The two Formula 3 boys at the bottom of the pile, Cadella and Verlein at the moment.
00:12:34Now, Whitman had a problem in free practice this morning.
00:12:37He pulled off again.
00:12:38And he pulled it off in exactly the same place.
00:12:40To the point where I almost thought this was a replay of free practice, Andrew.
00:12:43So, that was exactly what happened this morning.
00:12:46So, we'll keep our eyes on that.
00:12:48Well, Whitman is currently in about, where is he, Whitman?
00:12:54So, he might have done enough.
00:12:57So, the cut is at 1.51.096.
00:13:02Who have we got there that can go faster at the moment?
00:13:06Well, Werner would expect to go quicker.
00:13:09Got Timo Scheider on the bubble.
00:13:11We've got Wickens, the other Canadian driver in his second year in the DTM.
00:13:17Just looking at his, his splits will indicate he is on a lap now, which is going to jump him
00:13:25up into about, maybe, 13th place.
00:13:28Well, whilst you were talking, Matty Ekstrom now has gone quickest, Andrew, with a 1.51.1.6.
00:13:34Spengler now, second fastest, then it's Mortara, then it's Jamie Green.
00:13:38Changes so quickly in this qualifying, doesn't it?
00:13:40Yes.
00:13:41We just have the, under five minutes going at Tarn Bay now, he's on a quick one.
00:13:46Got to get used to this colour of Joey Hand, of course, different liveries from last year.
00:13:50Joey Hand out there, he's currently 12th fastest.
00:13:54I know you spoke to Joey and also to Cal and...
00:13:58Yeah, he's manager, Calvin Fish, former racer from Norfolk originally.
00:14:04Now, firmly out in America.
00:14:06Joey goes quickest.
00:14:08Whoa!
00:14:081.49.8.08 from Joey Hand.
00:14:11Where did he pull that from, Andrew?
00:14:13Yeah, that's a quick lap.
00:14:15Joey is feeling much more confident.
00:14:16He switched teams with Creo this year.
00:14:19Different group operating his car.
00:14:22Whereas Audi have their top squad, run by Apt.
00:14:26Yes.
00:14:26And then they have two satellite teams.
00:14:28The four BMW teams are all supposed to be equal.
00:14:33Of course, the Schnitzer team, run by Charlie Lamb, is the most important.
00:14:37There's an interesting livery.
00:14:39That's just for this race.
00:14:40Iron Man 3.
00:14:42Yes.
00:14:43Promoting the film, which I believe is released in Germany, I think, on Monday.
00:14:49And a great lap there from Tombé, who now goes second fastest.
00:14:52Ron Bordwein for Timo Glock.
00:14:58So, dying four minutes now.
00:15:01And Tombé right up there.
00:15:02Fourth fastest for Timo.
00:15:04Yep.
00:15:05And look at Vittorius.
00:15:06That's a bit of a surprise.
00:15:07Vittorius right up there.
00:15:13Timo Glock.
00:15:15So, Wiccan's out.
00:15:17Tomczyk on the bubble at the moment.
00:15:18The champion from a couple of years ago.
00:15:23Albuquerque is not in.
00:15:27Mary, of course, not circulating.
00:15:30On board with Gary Paffett.
00:15:32Just three minutes remaining in this quality session.
00:15:35He's got Mike Rockefeller ahead of him.
00:15:41150.
00:15:44It's last lap.
00:15:45The cut is at 150.55-ish.
00:15:49On a 50.4, I'll put you up and do almost into the top 10.
00:15:55So, just a bit more than a tenth of a second.
00:15:57Rather being right on the cut, you're up in the top 10.
00:16:00That's how it is in the DTM.
00:16:03There's Ty Gardner, who is part of the management team of Gary Paffett.
00:16:08And Tony alongside him, the physio, long-term physio for Mercedes-Benz.
00:16:15Airline crosses the line.
00:16:19Wiccan's out at the moment.
00:16:22And anybody on a quick one.
00:16:25Albuquerque might be on a quick one.
00:16:31Albuquerque's going to get in, I'm pretty sure of that.
00:16:34And I could knock Rockefeller out.
00:16:36Rockefeller's on a quick lap as well, though.
00:16:39But Albuquerque had a very poor final sector.
00:16:44Dropped three seconds on the final sector.
00:16:47Albuquerque looks he's going to be in.
00:16:48That could be him done for the day.
00:16:54Rockefeller on the bubble.
00:16:55Wiccan's trying to get in.
00:16:58Rockefeller out on a lap.
00:17:00Ekstrom out on a quick lap as well.
00:17:02He can vault from night.
00:17:03Watch for that.
00:17:05Martha's also on a quick lap out there.
00:17:08With hand on the top of the pole, the Californian.
00:17:13Also been racing in the American Le Mans series this year.
00:17:16Ekstrom goes quickest now.
00:17:17Ekstrom goes quickest.
00:17:181.49.744 for Matty Ekstrom then.
00:17:21He's not Joey Hand off that top spot at the moment.
00:17:25We're watching Augusto Farfus then.
00:17:29Now, what's Augusto going to do here?
00:17:33We go across the line and he goes first.
00:17:36He goes quickest.
00:17:37He showed moments of brilliance last year, didn't he?
00:17:39In his debut season.
00:17:40He's got his one victory.
00:17:42Yep.
00:17:42He's got a loss of Schleben.
00:17:45So, Farfus, all that experience in the World Touring Car Championship where he was a teammate to Andy Prio.
00:17:55Prio is down on 15th place.
00:17:57He's a bit in danger now.
00:18:01He's about to fall in half a minute.
00:18:03He's time just looking down.
00:18:05Let's see who's going quickly.
00:18:11Albuquerque is on another lap.
00:18:14Might not be good enough.
00:18:15It might just get him in.
00:18:18Don't think it is actually.
00:18:19He depends on his final sector.
00:18:23So, Albuquerque might get in.
00:18:26Mortara is and Molina out at the moment.
00:18:30I don't think they're going to make it.
00:18:32There's Rob Wiggins on a 24.9.
00:18:36Really looking for a 24.7.
00:18:39First sector, 49.6.
00:18:41Well, it's going to be close.
00:18:44Yes.
00:18:44The Rob Wiggins in the chainsaw car.
00:18:47Could we have a chainsaw massacre here?
00:18:49I knew I'd say that pretty soon into this sponsorship.
00:18:59Still backed orange car.
00:19:01They've been around for ages, Mercedes, since the first time they've had a full livery on a car.
00:19:07And crossing the line.
00:19:09Look, Cadella just put in a quick one.
00:19:11He was in for a second but has dropped out again.
00:19:143.016.
00:19:17And he's in at the moment.
00:19:19Anybody out there that might knock him off?
00:19:25Cadella is on a lap still, I think.
00:19:30So, there they are at the Paffet garage.
00:19:39Fair line got going again.
00:19:44Let's just see the side exhaust there with the flashes of source flame coming out.
00:19:49Danny Cadella, who, you've been watching the sector times, Andrew, is currently down there 17th.
00:19:57Disney has got to put in a blistering lap.
00:20:00He could do this.
00:20:02He could knock Prio out.
00:20:06And we'll just wait until he's going to cross the line.
00:20:09Look, Cadella.
00:20:10And he does.
00:20:11He does just enough, doesn't he?
00:20:13And he's going to be devastated by that.
00:20:16Absolutely devastated.
00:20:18It was so up this morning.
00:20:21Yes, he was.
00:20:21Talk to him at lunchtime, Crowne Plaza, back driver.
00:20:26And as we said, he was fastest for much of the practice this morning, the 90 minutes.
00:20:33This is the only practice they have now in the DTM.
00:20:36The Saturday 90-minute session.
00:20:38Remember, they used to practice on Friday as well.
00:20:42There's Gary coming in the new colours of Euronics.
00:20:47Adrenaline in series.
00:20:52So, out go Prio.
00:20:55Molina, Bottaro a winner last year.
00:20:58Mary Whitman and Werner.
00:21:01Farfus on the top of the pile.
00:21:03Wehrlein really put a quick one in there.
00:21:05Superb one.
00:21:05You know, in his first ever drive in a DTM in front of the public.
00:21:10The tourists, a bit of a surprise there, in third also.
00:21:14Then Hand dropped to fourth.
00:21:15Teemo Scheider fifth.
00:21:16Paffet sixth.
00:21:17Ekstrom seventh.
00:21:19Tambay.
00:21:21Tomczyk.
00:21:21He's got his new baby here.
00:21:23New baby girl.
00:21:24We saw her last night.
00:21:26In the arms of partner Christina.
00:21:30Albuquerque.
00:21:31Rob Wickens.
00:21:32Jamie Green, his first drive for Audi, is at twelfth.
00:21:35Here we have the confirmation then.
00:21:38Topping back to part of qualifying.
00:21:40Augusto Farfus.
00:21:41Then Pascal Verlein.
00:21:42Vitoris.
00:21:43Hand Scheider.
00:21:44Gary Paffet.
00:21:45Matty Ekstrom.
00:21:45Adrian Tombey.
00:21:46Martin Tomczyk.
00:21:47Filippi Albuquerque.
00:21:48And Robert Wickens.
00:21:50The one through eleven then.
00:21:53Also in Jamie Green.
00:21:54Mike Rockenfella.
00:21:55Bruno Spengler.
00:21:56Timo Glock and Danny Junkertella right at the very end.
00:21:59And that means we lose.
00:22:00Prio.
00:22:01Molina.
00:22:01Mortara.
00:22:02Mary Whitman.
00:22:03And Dirk Werner.
00:22:05All those out of the next part of qualifying entry.
00:22:07Yeah.
00:22:08And Verlein.
00:22:09I stand corrected.
00:22:10But I think he's the youngest guy ever to race in the DTM.
00:22:14Certainly he is in recent times.
00:22:16He was born in October 1994.
00:22:19So he's still a teenager.
00:22:22So we're watching the cars that are going out then.
00:22:24And there is the new livery for Dirk Werner.
00:22:27He's out.
00:22:28Also out.
00:22:29And I'll be intrigued to find out what the problem has been with the car of Marco Whitman's.
00:22:34That's quite a livery isn't it?
00:22:34It is quite a livery.
00:22:36Twice that the car has been pulled up.
00:22:38The Ice Watch car in the same place.
00:22:41Once in free practice.
00:22:42And once in Quali.
00:22:44The first part of Quali as well.
00:22:45How long is it going to be before I realise that that is not Gary Paffet.
00:22:49Yes.
00:22:49Well you do realise it.
00:22:51Mary.
00:22:52Roberto.
00:22:53Spaniard.
00:22:54He's out as well.
00:22:56Yep.
00:22:56The former Formula 3 champion from two years ago.
00:23:01Also out.
00:23:02Edo Mortara.
00:23:03The Formula 3 champion the year before that.
00:23:05Yeah.
00:23:06With the familiar livery.
00:23:09Edo Mortara.
00:23:10Another one of those that is out from the first part of qualifying.
00:23:14And then the RS5.
00:23:18We called these DTM Audis the A5s last year.
00:23:23Very different to my A5.
00:23:25I have to say.
00:23:26But now they're calling the RS5.
00:23:27Which of course is the upmarket fast version of the A5.
00:23:32We'll look at the water streaming out.
00:23:35And Andy will be thoroughly, thoroughly disappointed.
00:23:38Because he was just in.
00:23:39It was literally the dying seconds of the session.
00:23:42That Andy Prio got put out of that as well in the Crowne Plaza BMW.
00:23:48So we'll look down there.
00:23:51On the paddock scene.
00:23:53And confirmation of those six that go.
00:23:57And now.
00:23:59A short break.
00:24:00And then we're going to go into Q2.
00:24:03Where another six will be eliminated.
00:24:05But this time the session is only 11 minutes long.
00:24:08So it's all action there.
00:24:10Roberto.
00:24:11Merry.
00:24:12Walking along.
00:24:16Disappointed.
00:24:22And we can now hear from Edo Matara.
00:24:26Yes indeed.
00:24:27I'm here with Edoardo.
00:24:28Edoardo how very disappointing.
00:24:30Last year was so good for you.
00:24:32Compared to your other team colleagues for Audi.
00:24:34And now in the first qualifying year out P19.
00:24:37What happened and how do you feel about that?
00:24:40I feel of course, you know, I feel bad.
00:24:44It's not funny and not nice.
00:24:46You know, when you are 19 or 18.
00:24:49Something like that.
00:24:50It's my worst qualifying ever.
00:24:53And obviously we need to analyze what happened.
00:24:56But when I drove like my three laps in that qualified me, I didn't do any mistakes.
00:25:02And actually that was pretty much what was in the car.
00:25:05And so we need to understand what went wrong.
00:25:10Thank you very much, Edoardo.
00:25:12Back to you guys.
00:25:12Yeah, thanks very much.
00:25:13That's interesting, Andrew.
00:25:15He's pushed it as hard as he could.
00:25:17He fell.
00:25:17He said, yeah.
00:25:18There's some of the crowd.
00:25:20Tucked in this fast grandstand complex here in the stadium at Hockenheim.
00:25:27Just looking there at Timo Scheider's car.
00:25:31Long-time supporters of Auto Test Magazine.
00:25:37And as we wait for this next session, we might get another couple of interviews in if we can grab
00:25:42them.
00:25:43Sometimes in this weather, they disappear very quickly.
00:25:46Okay, green light then.
00:25:48And the clock starts to count down, Andrew.
00:25:51Yep.
00:25:52First to show, going to be Augusto Farfus.
00:25:55Yep, and then after the session we'll be down to the top ten.
00:26:02First, Martin Tomchik.
00:26:04Tom.
00:26:09Oh, now we're going to hear from Roberto Mary.
00:26:12Yes, this certainly will be interesting.
00:26:14Roberto, what happened?
00:26:15You had a crash there, but then you still tried to drive again, but it's just not manageable anymore, the
00:26:19car?
00:26:20Yeah, I did a stupid mistake in the entry of the motorhome.
00:26:23I crashed the car there, and the car was competitive, I think.
00:26:27It was hard enough to be Q2, and then the car was too damaged then to reach again the qualifying,
00:26:35and then I had some problems when I went again on track.
00:26:38And, you know, it was really hard to drive it, some vibrations, but it's like this.
00:26:43Tomorrow is the race, and we will try to do our best and to gain as many places as I
00:26:47can.
00:26:47It's going to be difficult from P20, I guess.
00:26:49Yeah, it's quite difficult, yeah.
00:26:51We will see what they can do.
00:26:53All right, thank you very much, and back to you.
00:26:55Yeah, thanks, Verena.
00:26:56Getting a bit wet out there.
00:26:57There's Gary Paffitt's Euronics car.
00:27:02Timo Glock accelerates out of the garage.
00:27:07Remember all that success he had in Formula, in GP2 rather, with the iSport team.
00:27:18And really, one of his Formula One career, because early on he was with Toyota.
00:27:27And one podium, there's Matthias Ekrom.
00:27:31And now we can hear from another newcomer, Marco Wittmann, who's with Verena.
00:27:35Yes, I'm here with Marco, rookie of the DTM 2013.
00:27:38Now, I guess it's not exactly the beginning you were hoping for, but what exactly happened?
00:27:44You had a little session, you stopped the car, but then what's the problem with the car?
00:27:48What was the problem?
00:27:49Actually, I don't know yet.
00:27:51I mean, the practice started quite good.
00:27:55We were on P2, so I felt very happy.
00:27:58Then we had a problem with the car, but first we need to have a look on the dial.
00:28:03I don't know yet what was the problem.
00:28:06Unfortunately, I'm out, but of course I'm looking forward to the race, and now I need to do the best
00:28:09tomorrow.
00:28:10All right, well, thank you very much.
00:28:11Best of luck.
00:28:13And we've got Andy here as well, so I might as well just grab Andy.
00:28:16Hello, first of all.
00:28:17Now, Andy, what happened there in the very last session, in the very last second, basically, you were kicked out
00:28:24of your P17 now.
00:28:25What was going on there?
00:28:27Well, to be honest, I didn't have a good clean last lap.
00:28:30I had some traffic, so that cost me.
00:28:33Unfortunately, in those conditions, when it's getting better and better every lap, you have to do the last lap.
00:28:38And I knew it was getting close towards the last lap to meet traffic, and I had some aero problems
00:28:45with, obviously, following the car ahead.
00:28:46So, disappointing to not make it through, because we've been quick all weekend.
00:28:51So, anyway, tomorrow's a new day.
00:28:53And also with the weather conditions, how difficult was that out there?
00:28:57Yeah, the track's changed a lot from this morning.
00:28:59It's a lot more greasy, so the grip was a lot lower.
00:29:04So that made it a little bit more difficult, but that's the same for everybody.
00:29:07So, yeah, just less grip than this morning.
00:29:09Tomorrow's going to be different weather again.
00:29:11Dry tomorrow, and we'll see how we can do.
00:29:13All right, well, best of luck.
00:29:14Thank you so much, and back to you guys.
00:29:16So, I saw what Philip DeFillis put the teeth back in.
00:29:21Philosophical comment there from Andy Prio, the Channel Islander.
00:29:25Yes, and he will be disappointed with that, and he's putting a brave face on it, isn't he, really?
00:29:30Actually, you know, the first part of qualifying is always going to be the busiest with traffic, isn't it?
00:29:37But, as he said, and we couldn't tell from where we sit, it was drying out a little bit.
00:29:41So, it was just getting that little bit quicker, and you had to be there right at the end,
00:29:45and, of course, Andy got caught up in traffic, and all of a sudden, you lose two or three tenths
00:29:50in the DTM.
00:29:52Well, you're history.
00:29:53Yes.
00:29:54Where are we at, then?
00:29:55Far first quickest, 149.650, then it's Albuquerque.
00:29:59Albuquerque, hand right up there again, lots of BMWs, one, two, three, four in the top five.
00:30:07And then Wiccan's looking good.
00:30:09Paffet not in at the moment, but still on his out lap.
00:30:14It was interesting to hear what Marco Whitman was saying.
00:30:17Clearly, there is a problem with that car, isn't there?
00:30:19Yeah, he wouldn't say, would he, whether it's some sort of electrical issue.
00:30:25Obviously, fired up again, because we saw it going again.
00:30:28And then, I wish it would have been some issue with the transmission or the brakes.
00:30:33I don't think they would have gone out again.
00:30:36Oh!
00:30:38Attacking that, Joey Hand.
00:30:39Yeah, Joey Hand.
00:30:40He didn't do that two weeks ago at Long Beach.
00:30:44I can tell you when they said four.
00:30:46That was more than kissing, wasn't it?
00:30:47Yeah, mainly, there's all walls around there.
00:30:51So, there's Rob Wiccans then.
00:30:53Yep.
00:30:53Rob Wiccans, who a couple of years ago was the star of the World Series by Renault.
00:31:00Done some testing for Formula One teams.
00:31:03And he just goes purple in the middle sector.
00:31:06So, Rob Wiccans did a pretty strong job last season.
00:31:12Was gaining confidence all through the year, getting quicker.
00:31:16He could be a good support.
00:31:18Obviously, Paffet, in his quest for the championship, needs good support.
00:31:23He does need support.
00:31:23That's one of the things that didn't help him last year.
00:31:26And in fairness, it's that support that really helped BMW, wasn't it?
00:31:29Yeah.
00:31:29Wiccans could be that man.
00:31:32So, let's see how he does then.
00:31:34About to cross the line now.
00:31:37Second fastest.
00:31:38Yep.
00:31:41149.262 for Rob Wiccans.
00:31:44Paffet's at the top.
00:31:50There's a Iron Man car again.
00:31:55Who's in that film?
00:31:57So, here's Christian Vittorius as I move swiftly on.
00:32:00Robert Downey Jr.
00:32:01I can't answer that.
00:32:02Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow.
00:32:04Okay.
00:32:05There you are.
00:32:05Shame they aren't here too.
00:32:06We're cheering him on.
00:32:08So, Vittorius then.
00:32:09What can Vittorius pull out here in the chrome effect AMG Mercedes?
00:32:14Yeah.
00:32:15We've seen Jamie Green and those colours in the past.
00:32:18If you call it a colour.
00:32:20And we've seen, I think, Ralf Schumacher as well.
00:32:23The film they put over the car.
00:32:25Here he comes then.
00:32:26About to cross the line now.
00:32:27And Vittorius, well, 11th fastest.
00:32:31Watch out for Timo Scheider to be on a quick lap.
00:32:34Vittorius not in at the moment.
00:32:36Paffet not in right now.
00:32:39We go on board with Spengler.
00:32:43Who now goes third fastest.
00:32:45Yeah.
00:32:46Young Cadella was the one that made a little surprise in his DTM debut and got through into Q2.
00:32:57But now he's at the bottom of the pile in 16th place.
00:33:00I think the surprise for me was the fact that Wehrlein was so much quicker than New Cadella.
00:33:04Yeah.
00:33:05You know, the two.
00:33:07And now Hand is on the bubble with three and a half minutes to go.
00:33:13Effectively, two more laps for these boys.
00:33:16So it's, at the moment, Audi, BMW, BMW, BMW, Mercedes, Mercedes.
00:33:20I'm just trying to see, Dave, if there's any sort of dry line at all appearing.
00:33:24There isn't yet, is there?
00:33:25No.
00:33:27No.
00:33:28And whilst Andy said the track conditions were improving, it was still very, very greasy offline.
00:33:34Three minutes remain, but with Jamie Green now.
00:33:37Yeah, Ecke's gone to the top of the pile.
00:33:39It's always going well here at Hockenheim.
00:33:43So Jamie Green then finding a new home in Audi this year.
00:33:48Currently ninth fastest out of the stadium section of this Hockenheim circuit.
00:33:55One more turn to do before the start finish straight, and we'll get a time from Jamie Green.
00:34:01See how he has improved as just two and a half minutes remain.
00:34:07Jamie now goes fifth fastest.
00:34:09So Jamie Green goes up to fifth fastest.
00:34:11So it's Ekstrom and Wehrlein, Andrew.
00:34:15Yeah, that's a big surprise.
00:34:17Second fastest.
00:34:18Here's Gary Paffet we're on board with now.
00:34:20As Gary crosses the line, he goes, oh, 12th fastest.
00:34:25He needs to work.
00:34:26He's got to just two minutes left here.
00:34:29This is a phenomenal performance by Wehrlein, the young German driver.
00:34:36And there's just a bit of a twitch on there from Wickens, who goes to purple in the first.
00:34:41Good.
00:34:41Middle sector.
00:34:42What about Wickens?
00:34:44Maybe the track is still drying out.
00:34:46This track could dry out right to the end of this Q2.
00:34:50So we could have most of the quick times right at the very end.
00:34:53Timo Scheider not in at that moment.
00:34:55Paffet not in.
00:34:56Block not in.
00:34:58And the spread, well, 148.5 for, well, Fafus goes quicker, 145.3 for Fafus.
00:35:10Sorry, 148.3 for Fafus.
00:35:13Right.
00:35:13And, well, down to Timo Scheider's out at 149.2.
00:35:20Well, for a DTM, actually, I've seen it closer than that.
00:35:23Yeah.
00:35:23Now we've got Wehrlein on another good lap.
00:35:26Spengler on a quick lap as well.
00:35:30I'm pretty sure what's happening here is it's drying out now quite quickly.
00:35:35So we're on board with Pascal Wehrlein there.
00:35:38Less than a minute remaining in this session.
00:35:41So there is Pascal then.
00:35:43Purple in the middle.
00:35:46He's P4 at the moment.
00:35:48Where does he go now?
00:35:49P1, I'd say.
00:35:49He's got it, P1.
00:35:52And, Andrew, you've got your eyes on the screen there.
00:35:55What's happening with Paffet?
00:35:56Well, at the moment, Paffet's 13th.
00:35:59And just had a poor, a very poor middle sector.
00:36:05Two seconds off the pace and then got held up by somebody.
00:36:09But at the moment, it looks like Paffet is not going to go through.
00:36:13We've got, he could probably get one more lap in.
00:36:16I'm not quite sure where he is on the track.
00:36:18I think he's just gone through.
00:36:20Yeah, I think he might have just gone through.
00:36:22And, well, it's all down to this one.
00:36:24Gary's going to be mired in the second part of the grid here.
00:36:32And, uh, Rockenfella.
00:36:36Thirteenth.
00:36:38Yeah, Rockenfella.
00:36:39So we're on board with Paffet now.
00:36:41This is the crucial one.
00:36:42Gary needs to elevate himself.
00:36:44Well, he's on a reasonably good first sector.
00:36:47Got no traffic in front of him.
00:36:49Should, uh, should get him in if he can keep up this pace.
00:36:56So to the hairpin he goes then.
00:36:59Yep.
00:36:59Absolutely every corner has got to be bang on for Gary Paffet in the new Euronics liveried Mercedes.
00:37:06That's what Gary's so good at, though.
00:37:10Came so close to being a McLaren Formula One driver those years ago.
00:37:15Before Lewis just snappled it from under him.
00:37:19There's Timo Scheider.
00:37:22Looking for Paffet's middle sector time.
00:37:25Let's give us some reasonable indication whether he's going to be in or not.
00:37:29Spengler's on another quick lap out there.
00:37:31And Paffet on a good middle sector.
00:37:35Scheider goes seventh.
00:37:36Scheider goes through.
00:37:37I think Paffet's going to just get in.
00:37:39And he might not green out.
00:37:41That would be ironical.
00:37:43Yes.
00:37:44So we're on board with Gary Paffet then.
00:37:47And, uh, Yunkadela's on a quick lap as well.
00:37:50Watch out for Yunkadela.
00:37:53Albuquerque is done.
00:37:54He's out.
00:37:55He'll be starting 16th.
00:37:58Glock, I think, certainly he's not going to make it past this session.
00:38:03He's got some things to learn.
00:38:04There's a checkered flag.
00:38:06Paffet goes seventh fastest.
00:38:07Paffet goes seventh.
00:38:08It's a bit of a...
00:38:09And watch for Yunkadela jumping in there in a moment.
00:38:14Oh, and he can't...
00:38:15Did he get held up?
00:38:16Not really.
00:38:17Had to change the line.
00:38:18And Yunkadela just gets in.
00:38:20And Tomczyk goes out.
00:38:21And Green is out.
00:38:24And Tombe out.
00:38:27And Rocky.
00:38:29So Wehrlein at the top.
00:38:31What a surprise.
00:38:32That is motor racing for you.
00:38:34Yes.
00:38:34And now we know what's going to happen.
00:38:36And particularly in the DTM.
00:38:38And Wehrlein at the top of the pile through to the top ten.
00:38:43Remember, we're now going to knock out another six.
00:38:48We have a little break here just for a few minutes.
00:38:50We knock another six out.
00:38:51And then we get the last four.
00:38:52Then they have to do the one flying lap.
00:38:55One out lap.
00:38:56Flying lap.
00:38:57In lap.
00:38:58And that's how it'll be decided.
00:39:00They're allowed to put a new set of tyres on for that.
00:39:04This is shaping up to be a very, very interesting grid tomorrow, Andrew.
00:39:09Look at Tom Wiccan's right up there as well.
00:39:12We didn't see him qualifying that high lap.
00:39:15I don't think Wiccan's certainly didn't get in the top four last year
00:39:20or qualifying.
00:39:22There's Jamie Green going through, out.
00:39:24And you won't predict that.
00:39:25Tom Tito Green.
00:39:28Rocky, a Le Mans winner a few years ago.
00:39:31And third last year, in fact.
00:39:33Not involved in the prototype racing this year.
00:39:37Of course, the prototype racing spar this weekend.
00:39:41And certainly in the preliminaries,
00:39:45they were quicker than the Toyota rivals.
00:39:49Quattro cars have got an intriguing front-wheel drive system,
00:39:54including a flywheel developed by the Williams Formula One squad.
00:39:59Quite an incredible machine.
00:40:01It's been trying the long tail out for Le Mans.
00:40:03Of course, Le Mans, not that many weeks away now.
00:40:10So, what's going to happen in this next session?
00:40:12Can Wehrlein keep his head, as they say?
00:40:16Well, that would be remarkable.
00:40:19Absolutely remarkable.
00:40:20But he's been remarkable so far, hasn't he?
00:40:22Yeah, 1.47.890 was the time then that Wehrlein set us.
00:40:25We see Ralph Schumacher and Peter Mucca there having a discussion.
00:40:29Well, yeah.
00:40:30Of course, he drove for Mucca last year, Pascal Wehrlein.
00:40:35And he's still running, being run by Mucca.
00:40:41And Pascal Wehrlein at 18, the 2011 Formula Masters champion.
00:40:48He's got a lot of karting success.
00:40:50Isn't he interesting, Andrew?
00:40:52And you'll probably tell me off for saying it,
00:40:54but Ralph Schumacher could have more of an influence on the success
00:40:57from the position he's in now than driving, perhaps.
00:41:00And quite how heavily he's involved with those young drivers, I don't know.
00:41:05OK, here's the session two then.
00:41:07Wehrlein, Farfors, Wiccans, Vitoris, Ekstrom, Spengler, Paffet,
00:41:11and Scheider then the top eight from Q2.
00:41:15Three-quarters of a second in that.
00:41:16Yeah.
00:41:17Hand only just in at the end, look.
00:41:19But he is in, and that's good to see.
00:41:20He's in the top ten.
00:41:21So we lose Tomczyk, Green, Tombe, Rockenfella,
00:41:25Timo Glock, and Felipe Albuquerque.
00:41:27Some names in there we would have never expected to lose, Andrew.
00:41:30Yeah, we've got still an overcast sky, Dave,
00:41:34but I believe it has stopped red.
00:41:35We're in the back of the big grandstand here.
00:41:37He's got a huge overhang.
00:41:39It's difficult.
00:41:39There's no rain dripping off the edge of it anymore.
00:41:43And I'm pretty sure that track is drying.
00:41:45It's going to get quicker and quicker.
00:41:47He's got to be in the right place at the right time for this
00:41:49in this next session as well.
00:41:52So Felipe Albuquerque then out.
00:41:54We see his car.
00:41:55There's Clock out with the Deutsche Post machine.
00:41:57We had three Deutsche Post cars last year.
00:41:59He's just got the one.
00:42:00Glock, of course, been involved with them for a long time.
00:42:02I think he's one of the first people they sponsored,
00:42:05Timo Glock.
00:42:07There is the Brazilian-coloured Schaeffler car.
00:42:14There's no connection with Brazil at all.
00:42:16And that's the colours that Tomczyk used to win the championship a couple of years ago.
00:42:22Here is the Ironman.
00:42:24Ironman three.
00:42:29And Adrian Tambe, who had been the youngest man in the DTM until Pascal Wehrlein came along.
00:42:41Jamie Green in the red bull cart.
00:42:46So no fairy tale for him in his first drive with Audi.
00:42:50Well, no fairy tale in qualifying.
00:42:52A lot can happen yet.
00:42:54Tomczyk, the former champ from two years ago.
00:42:59Oh, no doubt Marina's down there looking for drivers.
00:43:09Here they are.
00:43:10There's Jamie Green.
00:43:13And he's working with the engineer that worked for Ekstrom for years.
00:43:20And he's swapped over.
00:43:22And it's very difficult.
00:43:24The engineer is such an important part of you here.
00:43:27But we can hear from Jamie Green now about missing the cut.
00:43:31Yeah, I'm here with Jamie now.
00:43:32I'm still getting used to you in the Audi suit.
00:43:34But are you also still getting used to your car?
00:43:36I mean, P12, probably not the thing that makes you too happy.
00:43:40Yeah, I mean, that was a typical qualifying session where the conditions are changing the whole time.
00:43:45And just getting it right with the tires and a little bit of luck, really, to judge the conditions properly
00:43:51at that time is what makes a difference.
00:43:53And we got that a bit wrong today.
00:43:55But all in all, do you have a good feeling with the car?
00:43:57Yeah, I think we're okay.
00:43:59But obviously, we still have some things to learn.
00:44:01We don't get much track time.
00:44:03So I'll be learning through the race as well tomorrow.
00:44:05But it's certainly not over.
00:44:07All right.
00:44:08Thank you very much, Jamie.
00:44:09Back to you guys.
00:44:10Yeah, Jamie Green, originally from Leicestershire.
00:44:12Leicestershire, now resides in Monte Carlo.
00:44:16He's got two sons.
00:44:18One must be just been born recently.
00:44:21Let's find out what went wrong with Mike Rockenfella with Verena.
00:44:25Yeah, let's find out.
00:44:27Mike, what exactly went wrong with you?
00:44:28I mean, P14, that is a big surprise, but not in a positive connotation.
00:44:34Yeah, I don't know.
00:44:35To be honest, the car was really good.
00:44:37We were good when it was really wet.
00:44:38But as soon as it started to dry up a little bit, I think we, I don't know, we have
00:44:44to check.
00:44:44But it has to do something with tire grip, tire pressure, because the car was really, really bad in the
00:44:51second qualifying.
00:44:52And it's very disappointing.
00:44:53You know, we focused so much on this.
00:44:55We were good in a free practice.
00:44:57We were good in Q1.
00:44:58I mean, like I said, until it started to be in the mixed condition, then we just showed no pace.
00:45:04Now, you said when it got drier, the car got worse.
00:45:06Tomorrow, I think, it's going to be dry, too.
00:45:08What does that mean for the race, do you think?
00:45:10I'm still optimistic that with slicks and dry conditions, the car is good.
00:45:15But like I said, the tire treatment, I think we have to look into what we did wrong or where
00:45:21is the problem,
00:45:22because it's difficult to explain, you know, you feel good.
00:45:25And all of a sudden, if you just have no grip, it's not that I can say one corner of
00:45:28the car was not good,
00:45:29or I made a mistake there or here.
00:45:31It was just slow.
00:45:32So let's see what tomorrow brings.
00:45:34Thank you, Mike.
00:45:35Back to you.
00:45:36Verena, connotation.
00:45:37We've been looking at the English dictionary there.
00:45:38Very good words, right?
00:45:39Was that correct?
00:45:40Yeah, absolutely, yeah.
00:45:41Oh, yay.
00:45:42Well done.
00:45:43Impressed with that.
00:45:44Yeah.
00:45:45Okay, right, the clock is ticking down once again, Andrew, and it is fast and furious, isn't it,
00:45:50this qualifying for DTM and the race tomorrow, and that's what makes it so entertaining and so exciting.
00:45:57Now, before it all starts, we can hear from Martin Tomczyk.
00:46:01Yeah, Martin is here now.
00:46:03Starting in P11, I mean, that is not the best start into the season, is it?
00:46:08What was the problem, or what do you think?
00:46:09What were you tackling with?
00:46:10Actually, it's a very shit start in the season, I would say, but never unless it is like it
00:46:15is now.
00:46:16The weather conditions definitely were not the best to prove our overall performance,
00:46:21I would say.
00:46:22But, yeah, at the end, I went out too early and I overheated the rain tires.
00:46:28I couldn't follow the others at the very last two laps, and then I went down, I went down
00:46:34to position 11, so at the end, for me, for sure, it's disappointing, but we see perhaps
00:46:41our new special rules for tomorrow's race will help me to come a bit more to the front.
00:46:46I guess it's going to be definitely a lot more challenging and more exciting for us viewers
00:46:50also, right?
00:46:51I hope so.
00:46:52I hope we can show them what, or we can prove the new option tires and the DRS system, that
00:47:01the spectators see some more overtaking action.
00:47:04I will try my best to show the spectators the overtaking, and I hope I can do it.
00:47:08All right.
00:47:08Thank you very much.
00:47:09And last but not least, we've got Timo Glock here.
00:47:12Hello, Timo.
00:47:13First of all, welcome in the DTM.
00:47:15Now, obviously, you all know him from the Formula One, but now here at the DTM, you're
00:47:21a rookie, and now P15.
00:47:23Did you kind of expect that, or are you disappointed?
00:47:26I mean, it's the first qualifying in the DTM.
00:47:28Yeah, I mean, you shouldn't expect a lot in the first quality, but I have to say in Q1 I
00:47:32was quite good on the pace from the beginning on, and I was in the top five a couple of
00:47:39times
00:47:39in Q1.
00:47:41But then suddenly my lap times dropped, the others got quicker, and we need to understand
00:47:46a bit about that, and especially in Q2 as well.
00:47:50We went on a new set, and I think it was the wrong way.
00:47:53I think the youth set would have been quicker because I just had too much sliding, and, you
00:47:58know, it's experience we need to understand and need to learn about and make it the next
00:48:03time better, but the feeling was quite okay.
00:48:05All right, then.
00:48:05Well, we'll keep an eye on that and see you tomorrow.
00:48:07And the qualifying is continuing.
00:48:09So back to you.
00:48:10Thanks, Marina, very much.
00:48:11And apologies for Martin's language.
00:48:14Yeah, good work.
00:48:14It was bleat, wasn't it?
00:48:15It was bleat.
00:48:16We've had worse words to bleat in the past.
00:48:19I noticed just while we were doing that interview that Pathic came in and did a tyre change.
00:48:23Yeah.
00:48:25So it is obviously changing dramatically, isn't it?
00:48:28You can just see that dry, just see the slightly different colour there.
00:48:35Now, everybody is going on to slicks.
00:48:37Jumping on to those slicks, Andrew.
00:48:39Now, what they're saying now, I wish we could use the options.
00:48:42Yeah, of course.
00:48:42Because we know that the options, which are super sticky, would be really good in these conditions,
00:48:47but in qualifying, you can't use the options.
00:48:51So you've got to be a bit careful now on these slicks.
00:48:55Yes, because it's, you know, there is a line, isn't there?
00:48:57But that's all there is.
00:48:58You see that line so clearly there.
00:49:00The minute you go off the line, you're going to be in trouble, aren't you?
00:49:03There you are.
00:49:05You see the lap times will start to really tumble now.
00:49:11So one board with Timo Scheider then.
00:49:13We've got six, just on six and a half minutes in this part of quali left before we get to
00:49:18the pole shootout,
00:49:19which is always so, so entertaining.
00:49:22And yeah, just...
00:49:23We're going to knock six out here.
00:49:26And Timo first to show then a 1.45.
00:49:298.
00:49:29Martha's coming in to take the slip.
00:49:31Everyone's going to do it now.
00:49:40On board with Gary Paffett then.
00:49:45Now, you can see just by being in the cockpit of that car,
00:49:48just how twitchy the rear end is, Andrew.
00:49:51The minute you go off that dry line.
00:49:55Yeah, the tyres have come out of the blanket.
00:49:57Hopefully they've got them up to temperature.
00:49:59They're getting the tyres up to pressure as well.
00:50:03And the Paffett, well, good first sector time.
00:50:09Timo Scheider looking good now.
00:50:12Yes.
00:50:121.45.
00:50:138.62.
00:50:14Joggedela are 1.48.
00:50:152.28.
00:50:17Yeah, well, this is going to be changing all the time.
00:50:20Of course it is.
00:50:21So, Paffett around the hairpin he goes then.
00:50:23First sector 24.221, Andrew.
00:50:26Yeah, just remember he had that scare.
00:50:27He almost didn't get through into Q3.
00:50:30But, John Gary's going to be happier on these tyres.
00:50:36Had a lot of success here at Hockenheim over the years.
00:50:40Been on the top step of the podium here several times.
00:50:47Timo Scheider.
00:50:49You see how most of you are probably used to these sector times.
00:50:54Fast in the first part of the sector.
00:50:56And obviously, maybe a little mistake.
00:50:58Not so good in the second one.
00:51:00That's why it's white.
00:51:01If it had put in a personal best, it would have been green.
00:51:04And Timo Scheider coming in.
00:51:18Paffett's still out.
00:51:19Currently running.
00:51:22Paffett yet to put in a flying lap.
00:51:25There he goes.
00:51:26It's to second place.
00:51:28It's very different to Scheider's, isn't it?
00:51:30Yeah.
00:51:32So, 1.47.466 from Gary.
00:51:35Whereas, it's a 1.45.862.
00:51:39And we've still got times to show from many of the drivers that are out there.
00:51:43Including the current champion, Bruno Spengler, Andrew.
00:51:45Yeah, and Wickens.
00:51:47Just out there.
00:51:48Now on his first.
00:51:49It's a flying lap.
00:51:56Twitch as it came out of the final corner.
00:52:00One corner there.
00:52:03Again, you can see clearly that dry line.
00:52:06It's a little clip of the kerb.
00:52:09A little bit of kerb there, Rob Wickens.
00:52:12Yeah, just looking at Pascal Berline here.
00:52:14Who, so impressed in the last part of Qualy Andrew.
00:52:18What's he going to...
00:52:19Well, he's going to have a good lap, isn't he?
00:52:23Barthas is the one that's...
00:52:24Pascal puts in the fastest lap.
00:52:271.44.775.
00:52:28Look at the difference.
00:52:32Pascal.
00:52:33They're lying.
00:52:35It's a big surprise in this qualifying session.
00:52:38He'll certainly write some headlines tomorrow in the German press.
00:52:42Even if he doesn't put it into the final four.
00:52:46This will all change around quickly in the next two and three quarter minutes that are remaining.
00:52:52And Ekstrom there.
00:52:54The strong first sector.
00:53:03Ekstrom looking for his second pole in succession in the spring DTM race.
00:53:09The Hockheim, the only circuit that has two races during the season.
00:53:14As it has had for very many years.
00:53:19New schedule change for this year.
00:53:21We'll be heading off to Moscow Raceway in the middle of the summer.
00:53:27Next race, of course, will be Brands Hatch a couple of weeks' time.
00:53:31So, Matty second fastest then with a 1.44.682.
00:53:37Paffet quickest now.
00:53:391.43.550.
00:53:41And then Fafus pushes him down.
00:53:46Ekstrom's on another quick one, I think.
00:53:50So, we've got one and three quarter minutes to find out who's going to be in that pole shootout.
00:53:57Just four drivers.
00:53:58We haven't had a lap from...
00:53:59We haven't had a flying lap from Hand.
00:54:02Hand is just going for a one-shot deal.
00:54:06Verlein goes back to the top.
00:54:08There's Toto Wolff looking on then.
00:54:111.42.1.6.1 from Pascal Verlein.
00:54:16And he's going to be very pleased with this young man.
00:54:2018-year-old.
00:54:21Half vindicating his decision, I would think, Andrew.
00:54:25In the youth and in the team.
00:54:28It was such a late decision.
00:54:29It went after.
00:54:30Ralph said he was continuing.
00:54:32And then they decided, he decided not to do so.
00:54:36I don't believe there was any pressure on him.
00:54:38I think he just changed his mind.
00:54:44Christian Victoris.
00:54:46He's right at the bottom of the pile at the moment, Andrew.
00:54:49His sector times, they're looking good.
00:54:50Not good enough.
00:54:51Right.
00:54:53Not good enough.
00:54:53Well, I know he's on another quick lap.
00:54:57Mercedes 1 and 2.
00:55:00BMW 3 and 4.
00:55:01A hand in the top four now.
00:55:03Yes.
00:55:03If he hangs in there, as I said, he's the last one to go out in this session.
00:55:08He's holding the tyres on.
00:55:10And he's done.
00:55:11And now Christian Victoris goes quickest.
00:55:13Wow.
00:55:14This part of this is in trying all the time.
00:55:17Yes, of course.
00:55:17In trying all the time.
00:55:18You've got to be timeless to be out there on this very last lap.
00:55:22Here is the current champ, Bruno Spengler, then.
00:55:24At the moment, he's out.
00:55:25He needs to belt in a brilliant lap now to be into that pole shootout.
00:55:31And this is going to be his only opportunity because the clock is gone now.
00:55:35Yep.
00:55:38Now, we've seen Bruno with this gamble before, which sometimes hasn't paid off.
00:55:42But he goes third fastest.
00:55:44Well done to Bruno Vintouris.
00:55:45He's currently fourth Paffet.
00:55:48Clops to sixth.
00:55:49And Paffet's on the pole at the moment.
00:55:53Wickens second.
00:55:54I mean, that's sensational as well.
00:55:55By far the best performance by Rob Wickens in a qualifying.
00:56:00Here's Paffet.
00:56:03Again, this has got to be a brilliant lap from Gary Paffet.
00:56:06Yeah.
00:56:08He's got the...
00:56:09This is drinking at the last chance saloon, isn't it?
00:56:13It is.
00:56:13And Gary Paffet.
00:56:15Not that you can't win from sixth place.
00:56:18No.
00:56:18Particularly, I mean, it's going to be a lottery tomorrow as well with all the new rules.
00:56:23New DRS has hardly been tested.
00:56:26The option tie, we really don't know how it's going to be.
00:56:29And there goes Paffet.
00:56:31His quickest.
00:56:321.44.96 for Gary Paffet.
00:56:36There's Gary Paffet showing why he's a previous champion.
00:56:40What about Timo Scheider?
00:56:41Where's he going to go with this lap?
00:56:43Oh!
00:56:44Scheider goes first.
00:56:46Paffet goes second.
00:56:47Fafis and Wickens.
00:56:48What about Spengleston out there?
00:56:52And Paffet's now fourth.
00:56:55But Taurus has gone fastest.
00:56:56Here's Fafis.
00:56:58What about Fafis?
00:57:01And Paffet is now out.
00:57:03Paffet's now fifth.
00:57:06Fafis out.
00:57:07You had to be there right at the very end.
00:57:09You had to cross the start-finish line just before that flag went up.
00:57:13Every lap, Andrew.
00:57:14That track improved, didn't it?
00:57:15Yep.
00:57:15Every single lap.
00:57:18We've seen that sort of thing.
00:57:19Well, that's certainly not a disaster for the likes of Ekstrom, Paffet and Spenglow.
00:57:24They might have been knocked out.
00:57:25And Wehrlein, who was right in those headlines, drops to eight and a hand to nine.
00:57:30Jukadella, good job to be starting in the first half of the grid.
00:57:35So, now, pole position will be between Vitoris, who's not been in this situation before.
00:57:43Timo Scheider, who has.
00:57:44Paffet, who was a couple of times last year.
00:57:48And Wickens has certainly never been in there.
00:57:50Hasn't been.
00:57:50No.
00:57:51So, we've got two that, one that's highly experienced at this.
00:57:57And this is a renaissance for Timo Scheider.
00:58:00I think he was pretty depressed last year.
00:58:03He had the one super qualifying at Zandvoort.
00:58:07Yes.
00:58:07And then he stalled on the line.
00:58:10Yes.
00:58:10And that was his best chance of a super result.
00:58:15So, Timo Scheider, double champion in the past.
00:58:19Awful season last year.
00:58:21Proving.
00:58:22Now he's back in a black car.
00:58:24Yeah.
00:58:25He can possibly still do the business.
00:58:28So, we've seen the BMW bank car, Bruno Spengler, being pushed into the garage, which is not what Bruno would
00:58:34have wanted, but with conditions changing, literally.
00:58:37Well, he can win from seven.
00:58:38Yes, of course.
00:58:39And Paffet going through there.
00:58:42One thing I was pondering over the winter, this is possibly the only race series in the world where every
00:58:48single driver is a full-time paid professional.
00:58:52There are no paid drivers in this series.
00:58:55NASCAR comes close, but I think there's a few guys that don't pay their own way in NASCAR.
00:59:01It's going to be even Formula One.
00:59:03You know, we've got five or six towards the back of the grid who will have to find a sponsorship.
00:59:11Showtime professional this is.
00:59:14My shop looking down.
00:59:16Well, that was so, so entertaining.
00:59:18And there, confirmation of where we're at then.
00:59:21And the pole shootout is going to be conducted by Christian Vitoris, Timo Scheider, Augusto Fafus, and Rob Wickens.
00:59:27And out go Ekstrom, Paffet, Spengler, Verlein, Joey Hand, and Danny Junker-Della.
00:59:33So, Junker-Della and Verlein, really, have got to take credit for getting through to where they did, Andrew.
00:59:38Yep, absolutely.
00:59:44And talking of Junker-Della, there we see him in slow-mo as we bring you some shots of those
00:59:49that are not going to be in the pole position shootout,
00:59:54which comes up in just a few moments' time.
00:59:56There, Joey Hand, who's, he's looked very, very good today, Andrew.
00:59:59He has, yep.
01:00:02Struggled at the start of his DTM career last year, but was learning towards the end.
01:00:11Swaps team now, and I think he'll be pretty happy.
01:00:12He'll have a good run tomorrow, I think.
01:00:15Pascal Verlein, though, he's the sensation.
01:00:18Yes, he is.
01:00:19I'm only eight, but he was right up there for a lot of the time.
01:00:22I just didn't quite time it right, I think.
01:00:26Spengler, reigning champion.
01:00:33And the fact that, you know, Vittorius fasts the moment at 39.3, Spengler was on 41,
01:00:39so it shows how it was changing, because normally you would expect to see them just split by, well, 0
01:00:45.2 of a second,
01:00:46you know, the first five or six.
01:00:49There's Paffet.
01:00:50Yep.
01:00:53X-Trom.
01:00:56The red dive planes.
01:00:59What color are Jamie Green's dive planes?
01:01:01Are they, are they, they're not green, that's for sure.
01:01:05Remember, in his old Mercedes days, Green had green mirrors.
01:01:09Yes.
01:01:09It's very easy to remember which car was which.
01:01:12There the fans up in the grandstand.
01:01:15As we get ready for the four-car shootout.
01:01:20It's unique to this series.
01:01:23There's the Saks house.
01:01:25Saks shock absorbers, of course, an important part of German motor racing.
01:01:28I think that's where the media center is based.
01:01:34Pack paddock, because we've got the Porsche Carrera Cup here.
01:01:38We've got the F3, FIF3 series.
01:01:43We've got Volkswagen, it's the Rocco Cup.
01:01:46And, in fact, the fans have still got plenty to watch this afternoon.
01:01:49Three races coming up this afternoon.
01:01:54Had one Formula 3 race, which was absolutely dominated, wasn't it, Dave?
01:02:01Yes, it was.
01:02:02It'll be a different race now with those changing conditions.
01:02:05But, of course, those changing conditions are going to change for those that are taking part in this poll shootout
01:02:10as well, Andrew, in just a couple of moments' time.
01:02:12Yeah, just to say that Marchiello was the winner, runaway winner, despite he had a win and spin.
01:02:21He spun on the way.
01:02:22And just trying a little bit of track that he hadn't tried before.
01:02:26Found it was a bit wet and did a 360.
01:02:35The team has shied up, it's been, other than Zandvoort last year, a while since he's been in this situation.
01:02:45Just trying to see that crash helmet, but he's still got those Nintendo characters.
01:02:50Oh, yes.
01:02:51I don't think he has, you know.
01:02:58Just...
01:03:00Absolutely sure these tyres are at the right temperature now.
01:03:05There's Farfus Brazilian from Curitiba.
01:03:13It's always a happy chap.
01:03:15Yes, he is.
01:03:16Farfus, yeah.
01:03:17Family here with him.
01:03:19Yeah, this is an outward-going guy.
01:03:26So, yeah.
01:03:32V8 engines.
01:03:34Rumours, stories coming through.
01:03:36In fact, statements from Hans van Alfrek, the boss of this championship.
01:03:42And in the future, maybe in three years' time, they're going to switch to two-litre turbocharged cars.
01:03:50And the V8s will be gone.
01:03:54It's falling in line with what they're trying to do in Japan and what motor manufacturers do.
01:03:59But Verena's down there with another interview for us.
01:04:02Yes, I'm here with the reigning champion, with Bruno Spengler.
01:04:05Bruno, starting in P7 tomorrow.
01:04:07I guess it was pretty tricky out there, especially since Q3 at the end kept getting faster and faster.
01:04:13How was it for you?
01:04:15Yeah, actually, the whole qualifying was really tricky because this morning we were struggling a little bit on the rain.
01:04:20We had some problems.
01:04:22But then the team was able to react really well for qualifying.
01:04:24My car felt better.
01:04:26Still not perfect, I would say, but felt much better.
01:04:29And then through the qualifying, it was just really difficult to adapt every time to new conditions.
01:04:33I think it was a lot up to when you were out on track.
01:04:36Also, it was very easy to make a mistake.
01:04:38So, actually, with P7, it doesn't look amazing.
01:04:40But I'm not so unhappy because it could have gone much worse on a day like this.
01:04:43It's more a lottery than anything else.
01:04:45So, you know, from P7, I'm looking forward to the race.
01:04:48I try to do a good start.
01:04:49And then with the new DTM format, I think we should be able to do something to come up front.
01:04:54It's going to be exciting, definitely.
01:04:55Thank you very much, Bruno, for the moment.
01:04:57And here's Eki.
01:04:59And Eki, you'll be starting in P5 tomorrow.
01:05:02I believe last year we were a pole here, if I remember correctly.
01:05:05Where are you going to go from there?
01:05:07I mean, I'd rather start P5 and win the race than start from pole and finish P3 like last year.
01:05:12So, you know, we'll see.
01:05:14Everything is new, but I'm really happy.
01:05:16I mean, for being P5, normally I wouldn't smile so much.
01:05:19But I have a new engineer.
01:05:21I have a new group of people.
01:05:23Everybody I knew and they work really well and they did all the right decisions.
01:05:26In the end, with the track condition a bit mixed up, I think I couldn't prove a fair performance of
01:05:32the car.
01:05:33I was not driving maybe to my best in these mixed conditions.
01:05:37I know it's so easy to look the hero, but it's easy to be the zero.
01:05:41So, I thought, do as good as I can with no risk.
01:05:43And that was P5.
01:05:44And I'm happy for myself with the result.
01:05:47But tomorrow I hope for more.
01:05:49All right.
01:05:49Well, thank you very much.
01:05:50And last but not least, Gary is also here.
01:05:53Gary Peffert, who will be starting in P6 tomorrow.
01:05:55And you're smiling.
01:05:56So, it's not so bad?
01:05:57Well, Matthias said if it was wet, he was going to be on pole.
01:05:59So, I'm just having a bit of a joke with him.
01:06:03But, yeah, it's not too bad.
01:06:04I mean, after conditions like this, starting wet and then drying up all the time, especially in the last qualifying,
01:06:10you can't complain about being in the top six.
01:06:12You know, it's a good result.
01:06:13I mean, everybody wants to be on pole.
01:06:15And we were quick enough.
01:06:16Every time I crossed the finish line, I was quickest.
01:06:18But then other people obviously had more time because they were behind me on lap time and behind me at
01:06:23the checkered flag.
01:06:24So, that's pretty much the only reason we're not in Q4.
01:06:26So, we've got to be happy with what we've done.
01:06:28And for Mercedes to have five cars in the top ten is really good.
01:06:31So, it looks pretty good for tomorrow.
01:06:33All right.
01:06:33Well, then, thank you very much.
01:06:34Best of luck for tomorrow.
01:06:35And back to you guys.
01:06:36Yeah.
01:06:37And as those interviews have been going on, Rob Wickens is out there first ever time in the top four.
01:06:43And here he goes.
01:06:44And he's heading towards the end of the lap.
01:06:46He's in the stadium section already in the chainsaw car, the steel car in its orange color scheme.
01:06:54And he is going to stop the clocks at one minute, 36.920.
01:07:01That's the baseline.
01:07:02There you see the graphics.
01:07:04We'll continue this graphic when the next car comes out.
01:07:08A nice clean lap as far as we could see, Dave.
01:07:10Yes, looked it.
01:07:11Yeah, from that.
01:07:12Oh, no, it was that little moment there.
01:07:15We didn't see all the lap because we were seeing the interviews.
01:07:21But I think that would have lost Wickens a little bit of time.
01:07:26So, I don't predict he's going to be on the pole.
01:07:30Next out, Farfa starts his qualifying lap.
01:07:34Good to get all those interviews with those top guys.
01:07:40Here's this BMW M3 look-alike silhouette car, if you will.
01:07:50Carbon fiber chassis with a big steel roll cage on the top of it.
01:07:57And then this carbon Kevlar bodywork for racing machine.
01:08:03Nearly four tenths quicker in the first sector, Andrew.
01:08:05Yep.
01:08:08No mean competitor, Farfus.
01:08:14Number one, the World Touring Car Championship.
01:08:17It was always the bridesmaid there, too, Andy Prio.
01:08:22Long-time BMW driver.
01:08:28And let's see how he is.
01:08:31Coming past the second split.
01:08:33Just goes across, see, was that the split line?
01:08:36Oh, here's the split line.
01:08:38See, he'll cross it and we'll see the time pretty.
01:08:40He's gone.
01:08:41So, the second sector, he was only a little bit up on Wickens.
01:08:44Yeah.
01:08:45I think that Wickens' error must have been in the first sector.
01:08:50And now the final stadium sector with the sax curve.
01:08:56And we've got a new camera position, I think.
01:08:58And then the final right-hander there with traction so important coming out of here.
01:09:04Just kicks up a little bit of dust and water.
01:09:08And Farfus goes fast, he's quicker in the third sector as well.
01:09:14So, nice.
01:09:16Good lap from Farfus.
01:09:27So, Farfus on the slowing down lap.
01:09:30Where's Bart Manthe, his team boss from Belgium.
01:09:35Who masterminded a success, of course, with the World Touring Car Championship.
01:09:41Here is Timo Scheidel in, back at the front.
01:09:44Goes on to his flying lap.
01:09:48Through this first corner.
01:09:52And then up to the Eccleston Turn, which is the second slowest corner on the racetrack.
01:09:58Kane, super shot.
01:10:00You can see where it's wet off the line.
01:10:13Timo Scheidel.
01:10:16A little bit down on Farfus.
01:10:210.06 of a second, Dave.
01:10:23Yes.
01:10:23It's a blink of an eye, really.
01:10:28So, brilliant shot then around the hairpin.
01:10:32Yep.
01:10:35Goes Timo Scheidel then.
01:10:37Slightly slower, marginally slower in the first sector.
01:10:41We'll see what he can do in the second.
01:10:43Whether he can rescue anything from there.
01:10:45Yeah, this is important.
01:10:46This is the longest sector, of course.
01:10:47So, he just kicked up a little bit of dam there, didn't he?
01:10:50It was just slightly off line.
01:10:51And that can make all the difference.
01:10:53Yeah, but he's up, though.
01:10:54Yes, he is.
01:10:55He's up by 0.53.
01:11:02And, well, we could have a big story here with Timo Scheidel.
01:11:09So, through the stadium section, he's come now, just this turn before the start-finish straight, looms ahead of him,
01:11:20and there is the line.
01:11:21What's he going to do?
01:11:22Timo Scheidel goes quickest, Andrew.
01:11:24Timo Scheidel.
01:11:25Timo Scheidel.
01:11:26He's a double champion.
01:11:28Appreciated by it all.
01:11:30Looking for his 11th career pole in the DTM.
01:11:34There's more races than anybody else in this series.
01:11:43Doing some stack checks earlier on, David.
01:11:45We've got a list from the ITR, the organizer of the DTM, and a list from Mercedes-Benz of how
01:11:55many races they'd started.
01:11:56They weren't the same, so we weren't quite sure it was right.
01:12:02So, Timo Scheidel, the only man now who can knock him off the pole is Taurus.
01:12:11Wickens will definitely start on row two of the grid.
01:12:19So, the Taurus out there then, Andrew.
01:12:22Let's see what he can do.
01:12:23And again, Dave, is it still drying up a bit, of course?
01:12:26Well, yes.
01:12:26Is it just getting that little bit faster?
01:12:28Now, interestingly, first sector again, slightly slower, but then so was Timo.
01:12:33So was Timo.
01:12:34So, we won't read too much into that at the moment.
01:12:39The rumble of that VA-powered DTM Mercedes then, of Christian Vitoris.
01:12:49Around the hairpin, down this...
01:12:54Yeah, the little tricky section.
01:12:56Looking comfortable.
01:12:57Yeah.
01:12:58Taurus looking good here.
01:13:01Again, a little...
01:13:02Yeah, it was just a little kick up of water.
01:13:04Well, I think everyone's doing that there.
01:13:05Let's just see where he is at the end of sector two.
01:13:09And he's still down.
01:13:10It's looking good for Timo Scheider now.
01:13:12Yes.
01:13:14Still possible.
01:13:15Great shot there.
01:13:17The stadium section around the sax curve.
01:13:23And then into that right-handed.
01:13:26And then into that right-hander.
01:13:26Doesn't actually have a name, that corner.
01:13:29And then the sub-curve.
01:13:37And Vitoris there is third.
01:13:40And Timo Scheider is on the pole.
01:13:44And Timo Scheider scores the 11th pole of his career.
01:13:49And he is back.
01:13:58Well, the cartoon characters may have gone off the side of his crash helmet.
01:14:04But...
01:14:05Arguably good job.
01:14:06Yeah.
01:14:10So Timo Scheider, Augusto Farfus, Audi and BMW.
01:14:16And then the two Mercedes, Vitoris and Wiccan, third and fourth.
01:14:26And then the X-Strom will start fifth, of course.
01:14:34And there were the celebrations.
01:14:36And Ekki congratulating his long-time team-mate.
01:14:41Oh, how many years have they been team-mates?
01:14:43Must be almost a decade, I think.
01:14:50Weighing in.
01:14:58Wish I hadn't had that pasta at lunch.
01:15:03And now we can hear from Hans-Jürgen Appt with Marina.
01:15:06He'll be a happy man.
01:15:08Yes, I'm pretty sure he's a very happy man.
01:15:10But let's ask him.
01:15:11Timo Scheider really fought hard.
01:15:13And the first qualifying in the season is on pole.
01:15:15How does it feel for you?
01:15:17Oh, it's great for the team.
01:15:18Because we worked very hard in the wintertime.
01:15:21And we didn't know exactly where we are.
01:15:22And to start with the pole position, it's very great.
01:15:26And do you think it's a little too much to say it?
01:15:29But is it maybe the rebirth of the champion?
01:15:32No, I don't think so.
01:15:33But it's the work.
01:15:35And Timo is in good shape.
01:15:36And I think he did a really good job and the team.
01:15:40And we will see what's going on tomorrow.
01:15:42All right.
01:15:42Well, thank you very much, Hans-Jürgen Appt.
01:15:44And back to you guys.
01:15:45Yeah, well, this is not the rebirth of Timo Scheider.
01:15:49Well, we'll find out that tomorrow, won't we?
01:15:51Yes, we will.
01:15:52Yes, we will.
01:15:53Well, as always, drama in the DTM qualifying is what makes it so, so very entertaining, Andrew, all the way
01:16:02through.
01:16:02At one stage, we had newcomers right up there at the top.
01:16:05But at the end of the day, it was the man who's competed in more DTM races than anybody else.
01:16:10That's how he celebrated, who is starting on the pole with a second-year DTM driver alongside him, Gusto Farfus.
01:16:20And then another man who's relatively new to the Sirius Vittorius and Wickens.
01:16:25And then another of the old-timers.
01:16:27Two of the old-timers will line up on row three.
01:16:31Well, they've been around for a long time in the DTM, Ekstrom and Pafit.
01:16:35And then the current champion, Spengler, alongside the youngest man in the Sirius, Pascal Wehrlein.
01:16:43They'll be on row four.
01:16:44And row five will have Joey Hand.
01:16:45And a rookie in the Yunkadada from Spain.
01:16:50And that'll be Tom Chicken Green, Tambay and Rockenfella.
01:16:53Timo Glock will start alongside Albuquerque.
01:16:56Prio just timed it incorrectly with Molina, Matara and Meri.
01:17:01And on the back will be Whitman and Werner.
01:17:06But that may be not indicative of their speed either.
01:17:11So tomorrow, of course, we're going to have all the complications of the option tyre.
01:17:17Which has yellow markings on it.
01:17:20I believe the timing and screen will tell us too.
01:17:22But now we can hear from Augusto Farfus from Brazil.
01:17:26Always likes to celebrate.
01:17:28Does he?
01:17:29We just heard you always like to celebrate.
01:17:31But I guess you kind of have a reason now.
01:17:33I mean, P2, how does that feel?
01:17:34You're smiling across your face.
01:17:36Yeah, I'm pretty happy, honestly.
01:17:38It's the first race of the season.
01:17:40After a long winter break.
01:17:42Difficult session.
01:17:43Wet, getting drier.
01:17:45So I think we definitely, the team, myself, we manage a good session.
01:17:49Putting the right tyres at the right time.
01:17:51So very happy, extremely proud.
01:17:53Okay, tomorrow is going to be a new race for us with DRS, the option tyres.
01:17:57So that is a long way.
01:17:58But I'm really enjoying the weekend.
01:17:59That's the most important for me.
01:18:01I bet.
01:18:01And from P2, I guess it's looking very good.
01:18:03Thank you very much, Augusto Farfus.
01:18:05Back to you guys.
01:18:06But of course, I'm going to try to grab the other two as well.
01:18:08Sure.
01:18:08Well, Bom Dia then to Augusto Farfus.
01:18:12And there's more shots of Timo Scheider.
01:18:19He made a good point, Andrew.
01:18:20So much to consider tomorrow in terms of strategy.
01:18:23You know, the new option tyres, the DRS, weather conditions.
01:18:27It's the unknowns of how the DRS is going to work.
01:18:30The unknowns of how the option tyre is going to work.
01:18:33How long it will last.
01:18:35The strategy, do you start on it?
01:18:38Certainly, we understand that the first four or five will definitely start on the option.
01:18:43We believe that there's an option with the option to put it back on at the end of the race
01:18:47as well.
01:18:48But here is that confirmed or denied yet, have we?
01:18:51Not yet, no.
01:18:52People are talking about it.
01:18:53Here's the starting grid with our graphics.
01:18:55Timo Scheider and Augusto Farfus on the front row.
01:19:00Row two, Vittorius and Rob Wickens, his best ever qualifying in the DTM in his second season.
01:19:08Gets it off to a great start.
01:19:10Mathias Ekstrom always there or thereabouts.
01:19:12And Gary Paffet, former champion and then last year's champion, Bruno Spengler, with a total new boy.
01:19:20Pascal Wehrlein, just 18 years old.
01:19:23And then Joey Hand, the Californian kid with Danny Junkadella in his first DTM race.
01:19:30Martin Tomczyk lines up and Jamie Green is with him.
01:19:35And Green, of course, with Audi for the first time.
01:19:38The Ironman 3 car of Adrian Tombe from France and Mike Rockenfella.
01:19:44Then it's Timo Klopp.
01:19:46The Formula One refugee joins the DTM and lines up alongside Albuquerque.
01:19:53Andy Prio, disappointed.
01:19:55Has more speed than that, I think.
01:19:56And Miguel Molina in the RS5 liberate car.
01:20:00Mortara, 19th with Roberto Meri, two former Formula 3 champions together.
01:20:07Marco Whitman, unlucky perhaps, was up there early on.
01:20:13And then that is the back of the grid.
01:20:17And Whitman, of course, with Werner on the back row of the grid.
01:20:23So, in a while, we will go.
