00:00The train wreck of the Mets, give me your takeaway on it.
00:04Made that move this week, firing the manager.
00:07Listen, it's not all Mendoza's fault.
00:09It wasn't all his fault.
00:11The team was constructed badly.
00:13I mean, Dan, they lied to us, right?
00:15Stearns lied to us during the offseason.
00:17Oh, we're going to get rid of Alonzo.
00:18We got rid of Nemo because we want better defense.
00:21And then you put Polanco, a defensive line who hasn't played first base at first.
00:26You move Bichette, who was a bad shortstop, to third base.
00:28You put Semien, who, granted, catches everything that's hit at him,
00:32but has as much range as a daisy air rifle at second base.
00:36It just made no sense, right?
00:38So you lied to us.
00:39It didn't work out there.
00:41Mendoza's the fault guy.
00:42All right?
00:43Someone's got to take the blame, and it was Mendoza.
00:45I feel bad for him, but such is life here.
00:47I agree with you with your name.
00:48I think it's likely it will be Cora.
00:50Cora would already be the manager of the Philadelphia Phillies.
00:53Remember, they asked him after they moved on from Robbie Thompson.
00:55He said he wanted to spend time with the family.
00:57Hey, I don't blame him.
00:58Now he's in Puerto Rico.
00:59He's getting all that managerial pay.
01:01Take the summer off.
01:02He probably hasn't had one in forever, so why not?
01:04But I think his name is going to be mentioned also, Carlos Beltran.
01:09How about this, too, also?
01:10Do you think now that Don Mattingly, you mentioned the Philadelphia Phillies,
01:14you think Mattingly has convinced himself with what's going on in his managing and what they've done?
01:20Because when Rob Thompson was running the team, they were so far underwater.
01:25People were talking about this being a disastrous year for the Phillies.
01:29All of a sudden, Mattingly is putting that role now.
01:32His kid's in the front office.
01:33He works with Dave Dombrowski as well.
01:35I mean, George, do you think he's now managing himself into thinking, hey, maybe I want to see what this
01:40thing looks like?
01:41Or is it you think it's going to be how this thing ends?
01:43If they go far, maybe he comes back.
01:45If they don't go far, how do you see this playing out?
01:49I think you just said it.
01:51I think you just said it.
01:52If they go far, if they do damage in the playoffs, and let's face it, with Christopher Sanchez, Zach Wheeler,
01:59Jesus Lozardo,
02:00they could do some damage here, right?
02:02They don't have a 4-5 starter, so they're going to have to go find somebody.
02:05And the bullpen outside of Durant is questionable.
02:08But Philadelphia's main problem in the playoffs in the past have been Schwarber dries up, Harper dries up.
02:13They're power hitters.
02:14It's tougher to hit against top pitching in the playoffs.
02:17That's been their issue here.
02:18But if they want to do some damage in the playoffs, I definitely think Mattingly would be considered to be
02:22kept here.
02:23That being said, I still think they prefer somebody else, but it's hard to deny what Mattingly's done here.
02:29And as an all honesty, Don Mattingly, my favorite player in the 80s, okay?
02:33I've got a couple of other memorabilia here on my wall to the right of the hitman, Don Mattingly, number
02:3823, got his jersey and all.
02:40Love the man.
02:41But, you know, I'm also not going to tell you, I'm not afraid to tell you, remember, Thompson got fired,
02:47Mattingly got the job, Zach Wheeler came back.
02:51Nice timing there for Donnie baseball as well, right?
02:53When you get an ace back, that also helps there.
02:55And Schwarber's hitting 500-foot home runs, Harper's coming alive again.
02:58So they're the team to be reckoned with, but I still don't think they're any better than third or fourth
03:02in the National League, behind the Dodgers, behind Milwaukee.
03:05Like I said, they're right there with Atlanta at 3-4.
03:08Let me break your heart, Denny, and go like this.
03:10How about Donnie baseball with the Mets?
03:13Bring him back to New York and have him over there with the Mets.
03:17Like, George, that'd break a lot of Yankee hearts if he did that.
03:21You know, I think as a Yankee fan would probably – I look at things differently.
03:24I'm a fantasy player, so I have Mets, I have Red Sox on team.
03:27So I look at things differently, not especially the gambling part of it.
03:29But I wouldn't love it, but it would probably hurt more if he was a Red Sox manager than it
03:35would be for the Mets because of obvious reasons there.
03:38Listen, he was the Toronto Blue Jays bench coach last year, all right?
03:42And they eliminated the Yankees.
03:43That being said, I was rooting, oh, I hope Donnie wins the World Series.
03:46Get the guy a ring, right?
03:47I was hoping for the Jays to dodge in the World Series for that reason, for Donnie baseball here.
03:52He deserves a job.
03:54He's not a great manager, but he is better than average.
03:57I think he's proven that along the years.
03:59He has cachet because he is a borderline Hall of Fame player, and my mind probably should be one.
04:04So he brings that cachet with him.
04:06I'm not going to tell you he's some great tactician, all right?
04:08He's not, but he is good with players because he's been one himself.
04:11He knows how to handle egos, good with the media.
04:14It's just maybe the on-field stuff, he's not the greatest out here.
04:16But, yeah, I do believe he deserves a job.
