Troy Melton shows once again why he is the future ACE of the Tigers.
Transcript
00:00Well, good morning and welcome to the Karsh and Anderson show. I am Doug Karsh, that is Scott the Gator
00:05Anderson. How are you today, my friend?
00:06I'm doing just fine.
00:07Are you?
00:08Yeah.
00:08Good night last night?
00:10Yeah, I didn't overdo it at all. I think I called it a night at the right time.
00:13Got back into the room to watch the second half of the soccer game. It was actually entertaining.
00:18Yep.
00:19I found it entertaining not because they lost, but it was just, it seemed like the United States had all
00:25this pressure and it wasn't a dull, boring soccer game.
00:29Well, they scored more than the Tigers did.
00:32So did Turkey, yay.
00:34Yep. So there was that, but yeah, Tigers did not do much last night.
00:40Yesterday, we're at Shanty Creek again and you probably know, listening to the morning show up here for an event
00:46with a bunch of our station partners.
00:48And we had a chance to play golf yesterday.
00:50And for about, I figured out, I've talked a little bit about this was, you know, with empty nesting and
00:57all that.
00:57When it comes to my golf game, this was the summer of Doug, where I took that big step forward.
01:03And I discovered yesterday that the definition of the summer of Doug is Gator plays extraordinarily great golf, amazing golf.
01:15For about six holes yesterday.
01:17I had a good stretch.
01:18Yeah, you were.
01:19I think I was, what, two over through six or something like that?
01:21Something like that.
01:22My man was on fire and it was fun to watch.
01:25It was fun to play.
01:26Yeah.
01:27The wheels kind of came off.
01:28We played the Hawkeye course up here.
01:31Love it.
01:31I can't wait to get back here.
01:32I want to play it again.
01:33I could only play nine.
01:34Back started to stiffen up a little bit.
01:36And I'm like, you know, and we had to get back for dinner.
01:38I'll tell you what, it was a good thing that that's all we played.
01:40Because not only did your bag stiffen up, this fella was in trouble.
01:44You were?
01:45Yeah.
01:45You had some issues?
01:46Oh, yeah.
01:47And feet issues, too.
01:49But, hey, it's all good.
01:50It was a good time.
01:51Great time up here.
01:53Hospitality was great.
01:53Yep.
01:54Lori and Promotions did an amazing job setting everything up.
01:57The clients that we had on this trip, they were all extraordinarily friendly.
02:00Fun.
02:01Fun group.
02:01Yeah, really a fun group.
02:02And it was a really good time.
02:04And Shanty Creek, it's beautiful up here.
02:06When you get a day like today, we're sitting right in the main lodge of the hotel looking out onto
02:11Lake Bel Air.
02:12It is gorgeous up there.
02:14And I do appreciate everybody who is up here putting this trip on.
02:19Now, with that said, there's obviously people out there care a lot more about what's going on in sports.
02:23The Durham news today, the Jalen Brown reporting, as I stand corrected on something with Jalen Brown.
02:30You had that pitcher's duel last night at Comerica Park.
02:33And, boy, that was something.
02:36Troy Melton was touching 100 on the gun and gotten a hell of a pitcher's duel with Tatsoya Imei as,
02:48through five innings, Melton was perfect.
02:51His pitch count was running high.
02:54Which, who cares?
02:56I mean, it would have been great to see.
02:58But I knew right away this isn't going to be a perfect game attempt.
03:01Because I think he was at 62 through four and 75 pitches through five.
03:07So he wasn't going to make a run at a perfect game.
03:10But eventually he got broken up by Taylor Trammell with that home run with one out in the sixth.
03:15Which is unfortunate because Melton was unreal.
03:20Fantastic.
03:21He was great.
03:22And this is, I get so excited about this young man.
03:26Yep.
03:26Because he just burst on the scene and he has been all gas, no breaks the whole time.
03:33His ERA through, I think he's pitched like 83 innings in his career now.
03:37It's like 2.3 or something.
03:39Yeah.
03:39He's been phenomenal.
03:41And he's got that high velocity fastball.
03:44Fastball, hopefully it's, you need to talk to your people.
03:47Find out if that's a repeatable mechanics that he's got so he's not going to get hurt because you know
03:52people.
03:53Yeah, right, sure.
03:54Because this guy is one of those that gives me the belief anyway.
03:58When we talk about trading Scooble and all that, you know, the buyers are sellers at the deadline.
04:04Troy Melton is the main reason that I continue to say it's okay to trade Tarek Scooble and still try
04:10to make the playoffs.
04:11I don't think this is a World Series team.
04:14But, you know, they've got a really good rotation.
04:16The rotation you can handle, if you're going to trade Tarek Scooble and get some assets in return, maybe get
04:20somebody to play right away,
04:22you can still make the playoffs.
04:23But if you weren't going to win the World Series before, then whatever.
04:26Let's at least get something for Scooble because in the meantime, Melton has been great.
04:31You know, Valdez has signed, and he's been really good.
04:35Keita Montero has been really good.
04:36And Casey Mize has been really good.
04:38I mean, they've got a rotation of guys that are getting the job done night in and night out.
04:43I mean, it's been a ton of starts where the starters have given up four runs or less.
04:50And it just continues to go.
04:51And last night was just another notch in their belt.
04:54I mean, it was a great outing by Melton.
04:56Unfortunately, the bats go silent against a below 500 team.
05:03And that's disappointing.
05:05You know, for this month of June where they were setting records with how productive they had been with the
05:10home run ball anyway, right?
05:12And then just to see them kind of go silent.
05:14I mean, yeah, they hit one last night.
05:15Dingler hit another dinger.
05:1819 for him on the season before the All-Star break.
05:2119 at the halfway point.
05:2457 RBIs I think he's got now at the halfway point.
05:27Yet he's not going to be a starter in the All-Star game.
05:29Whatever.
05:31But there's some bright spots.
05:32But the offense, by and large, just it needs – it doesn't need an overhaul, but it needs additions for
05:38sure.
05:40There's just been too many nights like this, right?
05:43I mean, if you look at its inconsistent offense and inconsistent bullpen have been some of the problems that have
05:51plagued this team.
05:52And, you know, last night Melton only gave up the one run.
05:55They bring in Kenley Jansen to get through the eighth, through the top of the Houston order.
05:59And he gives up the insurance run, which eventually cost the Tigers.
06:02I mean, so, you know, it's a situation where there's addressable things.
06:08If they move on from Scooble, you know, you've talked about all the pitching.
06:13And I don't believe you mentioned Jackson Jobe and Reese Olsen.
06:16No, I haven't.
06:17No.
06:17And they're –
06:18These are guys, and Jackson Jobe likely to come back within a month maybe.
06:23Or maybe by August.
06:23Is that what it is?
06:24Well, he's been throwing.
06:26He's been pitching a lot.
06:28But he hasn't done it in a game yet.
06:30His rehab starts in the game.
06:32But his rehab is going great, they say.
06:34So maybe in August.
06:36I shouldn't say within a month because that would be the end of July.
06:38So maybe in August we get to see Jackson Jobe.
06:41Which, I mean, even if Reese Olsen or Jackson Jobe don't make it,
06:45there's another couple of pieces that maybe one of them can be a reliable arm as a starter for this
06:51team.
06:51Like, it's not – it's funny because I've moved into the camp with the Red Wings where I'm kind of
06:57resigned to the fact that I think the best move is a full-scale rebuild.
07:01As disgusting as that sounds, given where this organization has been, I feel like what they've tried has reached a
07:07dead end.
07:07And if you're going to trade Larkin, you may as well trade to Brinkett and Gibson as well and go
07:12with a full-scale rebuild.
07:13With the Tigers, they don't need that if they move Scooble.
07:16They just need – they're shifting pieces, usable MLB pieces.
07:21If and when they move Scooble, I feel like they can bounce right back and be competitive again next year
07:28if they get the right pieces back.
07:30Yeah, exactly.
07:31They're not going back to square one.
07:33No, they're not.
07:33This isn't like a Red Wings situation where if they trade Larkin, then do they have to trade to Brinkett
07:39and do a complete rebuild
07:40and who knows how many years out they are from being competitive again if they have to go all that
07:45route.
07:45No, it's not like that at all.
07:47This is adding to a team that's a playoff team.
07:50In some ways, it's similar to what the Pistons and Lions are going through,
07:54although the Pistons and Lions seem like they're in better shape.
07:57You know, the Lions have been to an NFC Championship game.
07:59The Pistons, they were the number one seed in the Eastern Conference.
08:03The Tigers are still, you know, plodding their way step by step.
08:07So – but at least three of the teams are in the right direction.
08:10The fourth, who knows?
08:13Well, hopefully we find out later today that they've made a move on the Larkin front, and then we'll go
08:20from there.
08:20But there's a lot going on in all four major food groups.
08:23It's funny because I was looking at the Larkin news, and today there's really nothing with Dylan Larkin,
08:28but there's a ton of Larkin-adjacent news that could impact the Detroit Red Wings.
08:34So we'll be monitoring that throughout the day, of course.
08:36It is Carson Anderson.
08:37We've got open lines, 248-539-9797.
08:40We're going to do an NBA blitz thingy today at 10.30 with the Pistons right in the middle of
08:46all kinds of speculation,
08:47and new opportunities appear to be opening up in the NBA.
08:51So we have that to look forward to at 10.30 here on Carson Anderson.
08:55Mixing your calls and your feedback here on 97.1.
08:59First, we'll see you next time.
08:59Bye-bye.
