On Friday's edition of Felger and Mazz, the guys questioned what the Red Sox strategy will be at the MLB Trade Deadline. Felger makes the point that the Red Sox will have budget restrictions in place, due to the recent reporting about the team from ESPN.

00:00I'll go first, that Jeff Passan was on with Maz on the Baseball Hour this week.
00:04We've played that sound in various forms several times over the last couple days.
00:07I think those are whoppers.
00:09And as the deals are starting to get made now across Major League Baseball,
00:13there was one today, there was reports of the Red Sox turning down,
00:17a pretty big trade it sounds like, as well, with the San Diego Padres
00:20where they offered you a starting pitcher in Dylan Cease.
00:23He is a starting pitcher, yeah, ma'am?
00:24Yes, he is, yep.
00:25Dylan Cease, it's a couple prospects for Jaron Duran that was quickly rejected.
00:30So it's starting to pick up.
00:32Just remember, folks, according to Jeff Passan, who is tapped in as it gets,
00:38the backdrop to the Red Sox at the trade deadline will be the, one,
00:44budget constraints set by ownership, and, two, the Red Sox' willingness
00:50to go against what their computer models tell them.
00:54So, again, budget constraints of the owner, and what does a computer tell us to do?
00:58Those are the two backdrops to the Red Sox at this deadline,
01:02and we all sort of knew it, feared it.
01:05It's unsettling to hear it, though, from an insider who knows,
01:10and should know and probably has been told by the baseball people here on the Red Sox
01:13that that's the score.
01:14But don't forget, that's the score.
01:16617-779-0985.
01:18Who wants to go next?
01:19Go ahead, Murray.
01:20I'll go next.
01:20So I thought there was some very refreshing commentary from Mike Vrabel today at training
01:25camp regarding defensive tackle Kristen Wilkins, who just got cut by the Las Vegas Raiders.
01:30Hit it, Ryan Garvin.
01:31Well, I mean, I think we'll have a conversation.
01:33Again, this is pretty new, so I don't have all the information on where Christian is.
01:39I've known Christian.
01:40I've recruited him when he was up here in the area in Connecticut and going to high school.
01:44So, you know, I'm sure we'll have a conversation about it.
01:48Here's why I like this, because Mike Vrabel actually dared to acknowledge the existence
01:52of another player who's not on the roster.
01:55How many years, decades, really, did we have to hear old Boobs McGee snort and give a death
02:00stare because a reporter covering the team down at training camp dared to ask about a
02:04player who got cut that could potentially be signed by the team?
02:09So I welcome that.
02:11More of that, please.
02:11It ain't that hard to be human.
02:13It actually was a little shocking.
02:14I'm like, it wasn't just a two-word answer.
02:15He kept going.
02:16Like, there's some rapport there, knew him, coached him, like, wow, great.
02:19Now, as far as Christian Wilkins himself, no thanks.
02:22I don't care how well Mike Vrabel and any other coaches might know the guy.
02:26The Raiders, need I remind people, are now being held to be run by the best who ever
02:31did it, Tom Brady, who has an impossibly high standard.
02:34Also, Pete Carroll.
02:35Say what you will about him.
02:36But I think one of the better coaches in the league, he's back, Super Bowl winning
02:39coach.
02:39And so why'd they cut Christian Wilkins?
02:42Because he wasn't rehabbing properly, and he has a bum foot.
02:44So I'm good.
02:45No thanks.
02:45But as far as the commentary, I liked it.
02:48Maz.
02:49Okay.
02:49So the Dallas Cowboys have opened training camp.
02:54That's right.
02:54Open it up.
02:55Yeah.
02:55Among the participants for the Dallas Cowboys, as everyone knows, is Joe Milton, who I had
03:01this to say yesterday.
03:02According to John, I think it's Machoda, who covers the team for the Athletic.
03:08He was talking about Dak Prescott.
03:10At least he started by talking about Dak Prescott.
03:13And here's the comment.
03:14Dak is a great leader.
03:15All respect to him.
03:17He literally goes out of his way to help me.
03:19I've been in another building.
03:21I know how that goes.
03:24It's just very different over here.
03:27What do you think he means by that?
03:28So can I just say quickly up front that I wanted the Patriots to keep Joe Milton.
03:35I just want that on the record, especially given what they got for him.
03:39If they had traded him for a higher draft pick, a second rounder, third rounder, I certainly
03:44would have been okay with that.
03:45But I felt like they gave him away for nothing because clearly there was some sort of conflict
03:49or issue between him and Drake May.
03:53But the story coming out of Foxborough at the time was that Joe Milton is some kind of
03:59a-hole and that Drake May didn't necessarily want him around anymore.
04:04And after this comment, now I can see why.
04:09This guy feels like a special a-hole.
04:11He has played one game in the league.
04:14One game.
04:15I've been in another building.
04:17I know how that goes.
04:18It's just very different over here.
04:21Now look, the Patriots last year were a calamity.
04:24We all know that.
04:25So it was a bit of a clown show.
04:27And if that's what Joe Milton is talking about and basing his experience on, then I'm not
04:32going to argue with him.
04:33But if he's talking about the quarterback leadership, Drake May was a rookie a year ago.
04:38Maybe he's ripping on Jacoby Brissett as opposed to Dak Prescott.
04:42What do you think?
04:43But it feels to me like that is a shot at Drake May.
04:47And again, I would say the guy's job is not to teach you when he's a rookie trying to figure
04:54it out too.
04:55So no doubt that Joe Milton might be a special kind of a-hole.
04:59I mean, that's the word coming out of there.
05:01I mean, fine.
05:03I'll take their word for it.
05:06I don't know.
05:07I like to think that the new coach and the new coaching staff could deal with the a-hole
05:10if there's value there.
05:12Does it make you change your mind on the trade mask?
05:14No.
05:14No, it does not.
05:15Nope.
05:16Nope.
05:16I'm just telling you that I now see evidence of him being an a-hole.
05:20Okay.
05:20There it is.
05:22That's what I said.
05:23I wanted them to trade him for something of value.
05:26I still feel that way.
05:27But I now do believe the assessment that he is an a-hole.
05:31All right.
05:32We have official Felger and Maz confirmation.
05:36All right.
05:36Opening takes in the books.
05:37As promised, call's opening segment if you're ready.
05:39And you are ready.
05:40Josh and Nash will lead us off.
05:42Hey, Felge.
05:43I just want to say, yeah, about the Red Sox.
05:45You know, like, I'm not in favor of them buying at the deadline, not because of, like, any, you know, analytical-type crap,
05:53but, you know, just based on, like, eyeball test, man.
05:56Like, you know, the Dodgers and the Yankees are out there, and, like, there's a fair amount of other good, you know,
06:01ancillary good teams out there.
06:03And, you know, the Red Sox, they're going to get rocked tonight, man.
06:08Whatever food people bring, they're not even going to want to eat it, man.
06:11Okay.
06:12So I disagree with you.
06:13Like, you're saying don't make a move because they don't have a chance.
06:15I strongly disagree with that.
06:17Strongly.
06:18I mean, like, obviously, they're not at their full maturation point.
06:24I mean, it would be a little early.
06:26Obviously, they have problems.
06:28Obviously, they have flaws.
06:30They could go on a serious run with Garrett Crochet.
06:33That, I'm just, I'm sorry.
06:35Garrett Crochet, and if they added, like, a real deal second pitcher,
06:37you're not relying on Lucas Giolito and Brian Bay to be your real number two going forward.
06:41The other thing, too, is the American League really blows.
06:44Like, they should invest in this team.
06:45So before I even get to that, Murray, even with Garrett Crochet, that second round's a five-game series, right?
06:51I guess.
06:52Yeah, the division round's still a five-gamer.
06:54Yep.
06:54So he goes game one and game five.
06:56Yeah.
06:57You win one more of those games.
06:58Like, with Garrett Crochet, that's like a big, and then you're in a seven-game series,
07:04and if you're really selling out to win this series, he goes one, four, and seven, like, that kind of stuff.
07:08Like, you're, you could seriously go on a run.
07:11I know they're not going to be a favorite, but the only, I mean, I know, Mads, you feel the same way about this.
07:15So the only time you make moves is when you're the heavy favorite to win a World Series.
07:18That's freaking stupid.
07:19Or I hate that mentality.
07:21Yeah, again, it's, you know, get in and see what happens.
07:25If you add to the team, who knows?
07:27Anything is possible.
07:29Now, again, would I make them a favorite to win the whole thing over the Dodgers, the Mets, maybe even the Tigers?
07:36No, but my opinion has not changed from, you know, a couple of weeks ago when I said they could be in the LCS against Detroit
07:42as easily as anybody else in the league, including the Yankees and the Blue Jays.
07:46Those teams aren't great.
07:47I know Toronto's played well, but they're not a great team.
