00:25first heard this news that brad stuck to his guns which i i knew he would like brad is not
00:34he's not somebody that's gonna you know you're gonna get him emotional uh that you're gonna get
00:40him where he's playing defense like that it's just not him like he he's got a method to everything he
00:46does he thinks it through he's looking at plan a plan b plan c and in this case it was

00:53i'm not gonna overpay i'm not gonna overpay yes yannis is better than jalen brown we all know that
00:59but like i'm not gonna give up too much and and hurt this franchise and obviously he he likes
01:06gonzalez and you know we saw snippets of that last year and i i've seen baylor shireman for years
01:14since he's back at south dakota state in the ncaa tournament and i think he can be a really good
01:19rotation guy you know we forget too that like those guys you want to keep them in your organization
01:25because generally they're going to get better every year they're going to get used to missoula
01:29they're going to get used to playing with tatum next year which obviously gonzalez didn't and
01:33baylor shireman's played with him for a year so like those guys aren't going to be front line
01:38players ever but if they can be good enough to be your you know pritchard's your six if you got
01:44you know those guys are good enough to be seven eight and nine okay you gotta we gotta find
01:50something though here better than sam hauser and and name is kata but but jeff there's a lot of
01:55people a lot of celtics fans who were shocked when they found out that brad wouldn't put ugo
02:01gonzalez in there and baylor shireman and um and it just goes to show as you were saying how much
02:06brad stevens values those two guys but i we don't know like what what do you think ugo gonzalez like

03:12get free agents you weren't anyway in milwaukee but you're certainly not i don't think with jalen
03:17there you have a better shot with attracting one to play with with yannis than jalen so for milwaukee

04:04eastern conference finals or the nba finals you're you're trying to maximize what you have and if you
04:10have two of the top and and i think the other part is again brad is a savvy businessman in

04:19senses and you always want to deal you know at a position of power and jalen brown's draft stock will
04:29never be higher not draft stock is his trade value will never be higher than it is today so so

04:34you've covered brad stevens for a long time and and you kind of know how he works in a situation

04:40this let's say he gets a call from jalen brown or maybe brad is proactive and called him before all
04:47this went down what is that conversation like when your name is so publicly thrown around in trade rumors
04:53and then it doesn't go through yeah i mean that's a tough one brad brad's really good with people he's
05:01non-confrontational that's the one thing i'd say but he's fairly direct he's just not you know he's he's
05:07pretty emotionless in a lot of ways right so i i think it's there probably was a conversation uh you
05:15know a week or two ago because there was nothing in public that brad said that frankly was you know
05:22before over the years he would come out and and basically say we love jalen this that and the
05:27other we don't want to trade him this time there was none of that so i think there was certainly
05:30some conversations from what i've been told uh between the two you know but i think if you're
05:36jalen and i'm sure he's not thinking this way but if you're jalen in a way you should be flattered
05:42the fact that you're in conversations with you know a top five player in the nba and janice
05:46jeff with the anti-tanking stuff that's going to be enacted next year i look i just can't believe
05:53milwaukee did this what you just said made sense in the sense of they're not really close in terms
05:58of future assets but you're talking about you know pick swaps and unprotected the heat first of all
06:03have to be bad for that to even work and there's no guarantee of that and the bucks could have
06:09had a
06:09legitimate building block in jalen brown i just i can't i can't understand how they can sell that to
06:14their fans because it's jalen brown or a 10-year rebuild and they go for the 10-year rebuild that
06:19just seems crazy to me and the other thing and people don't know this but i've i've you know i
06:24still cover a lot of the au events i went out to one last week with like the top players
06:29in the
06:302027 class right so this class this freshman class this year in college isn't very good it's not
06:38very good there's one guy kid tyron stokes going to kansas and after that there's not a whole lot
06:42next year's maybe the worst class i've seen in 25 years 25 years wow so what i'm trying to tell

06:50is this year's draft tonight's draft is the one and then for the next two years nobody's going to
06:56want to tank because it's not unless the international group and a lot of the top international guys have
07:02come over and will play in college so that's the benefit i guess but from from a u.s standpoint
07:08from from a homegrown standpoint these next two classes are not worth tanking for jeff tonight
07:13like like where does the drop-off happen like what number does it go from being an excellent player to
07:20an okay player there's a there's a drop after the first three the first three i think you know are
07:26different right devonsa peterson and boozer and then caleb wilson is really good at four but i think
07:33it goes one to three then a drop off from like four to ten then another drop off from like
07:3811 to
07:4015 and then it's just okay at the back end the second half of the first round is is just
07:46okay it's
07:47not nearly as powerful and even the guards from five to nine there's going to be probably five guards
07:53go off the board um from five to nine they're really good but they all have their their weaknesses
07:59like people talked about like this draft like it's the greatest draft in the history of drafts
08:04it's very good it's very good but again where it's different than than it's been over the last
08:10couple years is you know you've got three guys that teams think have a chance to be frontline nba
08:17all-stars and then you got a bunch of other guards that um again have a chance most people think

08:25those guys you know mikhail brown jr keaton wadler darius acuff kingston flemings brayden burris
08:30all five of them have a chance to be an all-star so like the average amount of all-stars
08:36among the top
08:3810 picks in the last 25 years is like two and a half i could see there being four maybe
08:45even five and
08:45there haven't been five nba all-stars in any draft since 2000 among the top 10 picks i could see

08:52happening out of this draft wow jeff you tweeted about an hour ago that you know the celtics have
08:57been fans of trey murphy for years can you sell us on that get us excited about a possible trey

09:02trade i don't know what else that would involve but man trey murphy he's a guy that again came into
09:10the league a little bit unheralded he was a a mid first round pick uh out of virginia started his
09:17career at rice uh as kind of a three and d type guy but can do a lot more than
09:21that now and
09:22you know he's been with the pelican so nobody's really paid attention to what he did but he's a
09:29versatile you know six eight wing who can score i mean he averaged more than 20 a game last year
09:37uh he was efficient he could shoot the three he can pass it you know high iq dude like again

09:46saying he's a top 10 player but like i think if he's on the board and you can get him
09:50now again the
09:52part the the problem with the celtics is like what do they have if you're not trading jalen brown
09:59what do you really have what do you have that you're going to trade i mean peyton pritchard
10:03yeah probably the you know that's probably the thing because of his contract that probably has
10:09the most value but like and it'd probably be a three-team trade trade because you know the pelicans
10:14what else are you getting from them they're not trading derrick queen who they just drafted last

10:25wouldn't even want zion at this point well they got to figure out something because i mean you heard

10:38changes we can't beat the knicks yeah and i think brad knew that if you listen to brad in the

10:44press conference of the year it was clear as day he was saying to everybody which is really rare
10:50like i i watched that back and i was like man i've never heard brad so honest now he's always

10:58but he's gonna he's gonna be careful of what he says to the media and he was clear as day

11:04i know we're not good enough and we got to make some real changes here and that that's not you

11:10baylor shireman changes or or sam hauser changes that's going to be something bigger and you know
11:18i heard wind horse too and and everybody seems to think jalen's going to be out out the door today
11:23or soon i would say this i agree i i i think the odds are probably in favor of jalen

11:31in boston long term but i also know brad well enough to know he's not going to do a deal

11:38he's getting the better of that he's not going to just get rid of jalen tonight because the draft
