00:00It's interesting that Dusty May chose Cooper Flagg and a returning Kyrie Irving over the number one recruiting class and
00:07a chance to defend a title.
00:09But this is also what happens in the NIL world.
00:11I know he's not a player, he's a coach, but when there's no loyalty at all at any level, whether
00:17that be players, whether that be coaches, and it's about the almighty dollar period stop, this is what happens.
00:23Now, obviously, we grew up in an era where once you had success in a major program, most guys stayed
00:29there for a decent amount of time.
00:31I'm talking like old school Big East stuff, but the Big Ten's the same, where a coach became synonymous with
00:37a program.
00:38I think Danny Hurley might stay at UConn and kind of have that lengthy run there if you're turning down
00:44the Laker job, and I'm sure his phone rings all the time with openings, but there's not a lot of
00:50that.
00:50So, again, I'm trying to process this all morning and then obviously during the break right there.
00:56There's a part of me that wants to say, you know, Dusty May's a bad guy.
01:00Dusty May turned his back on recruits.
01:01Dusty May, you know, lied to get people to go to Michigan.
01:04But at the end of the day, Dusty May is merely playing the game.
01:09He's in the system that the NCAA has set up, which allows for guys to break contracts, and it's written
01:15in there.
01:16Like there was one clause in his contract, the previous contract, that if he left before a certain date last
01:22year, he would have forfeited to return a $1.5 million signing bonus.
01:27So there's a contract that allows for this.
01:29He's not breaking any raw laws.
01:31He's not breaking any rules.
01:33He's just now a product of a system that is not set up for longevity in one program or any
01:40type of loyalty.
01:41So when kids get recruited by coaches and the coach says, I'm going to be here for four years of
01:48your college career, first off, the kid ain't staying for four years.
01:52And there's just as good a shot.
01:53The coach ain't staying for four years either.
01:56Right.
01:56That's the tough part about it.
01:58I guess I'm starting to interrupt.
01:59I guess as I'm processing it, I'm not mad at Dusty May at all.
02:03I'm not a Michigan guy.
02:04If I'm a Michigan fan, I'm upset.
02:06I'm disappointed that a guy that brought us to championship and beat Hurley in the championship game with a far
02:12better team, in my opinion, but obviously took care of business and won the championship.
02:17He's merely playing the cards that are dealt to him.
02:20Now, you could be upset in the moment.
02:22I totally get that and respect that because of the date and the timing of the announcement.
02:28Right.
02:28And because you had such a great recruiting class coming off the championship, but I don't think you could be
02:33mad at Dusty May.
02:35Wait till you see the offer, because it's not been announced that I've seen yet, and the amount of money
02:39he's getting from the Dallas Mavericks to leave Michigan.
02:43He was making about five million bucks at Michigan right now.
02:47OK, I'm going to assume he's signing a five year, 50 million dollar contract or something along those lines to
02:55coach Cooper Flagg and try to get the Dallas Mavericks back to the playoffs.
02:59Right.
02:59So he made a financial decision.
03:01And by the way, coaching in the NBA, while it's a very arduous lifestyle and you don't understand all the
03:09work that goes in behind the scenes and there's not a lot of sleep is still a easier job than
03:15coaching kids.
03:18If a guy messes up in the NBA, whether it's domestic violence or drugs or gambling, that's on the guy.
03:25If it happens in college, while the player, yes, has to deal with some repercussions of it, it's on you.
03:33And these days, if you're talking about one and done kids who are making millions of dollars, why would you
03:39ever want that responsibility when you go to the NBA and none of it's your responsibility?
