00:00We're all about the people, especially people coming in from out of town that are experiencing
00:04our city for the first time. Got a lot of new people. What did you say the number was? Four
00:08and a half million people going to be coming through the airports here, right? Yeah, through
00:11Bush and Hobby from mid-June to about mid-July is what they're expecting. 4.5 million people.
00:18That's a lot of people. That is way, no, it's honestly, it was kind of mind-blowing and you
00:22know it's an enormous event and everything, but you think about, okay, when there's a football
00:26game or the Super Bowl or what have you, there's a limited number of people that are going
00:30to come in for that one event. That did blow my mind. I was not expecting to have my mind
00:37blown by that number. No, and that was the big selling point. It's like having, I don't
00:44know if this is literally right, but it's like having seven Super Bowls. But even more than
00:48that, it's people are going to stay for weeks and be eating in restaurants the whole time
00:53and renting cars and getting like the tourism taxes and all that. It's crazy. It's great.
00:58It's great. So thank you for bringing your Euros to us. We appreciate that very, very much.
01:02So for those of you listening to the show or that maybe want to pass these recommendations
01:07on to people that you know are coming in from out of town, or you're going to the Fan Fest
01:11and you get talking to people that are in from out of town, you want to make some recommendations.
01:16Raheel Ramzanali in studio with us here wants to help you and we'll help as well put together
01:21the perfect Houston day for Houston visitors. Yeah. And we have to start with food. All right.
01:26We are known as one of the best food cities in the nation. I know New York is up there.
01:32Chicago's up there. We're up there, man. We're up there. Houston is making a serious play at this.
01:36We are fantastic. Nobody debates. That's how you know when, when Houston gets bragged about as a
01:41food city, like on social media, I see very little pushback on that. It's a good point. Yeah.
01:45It's a great way to measure it. So let's start with a Houston restaurant that you have to try
01:51when you're in the city and also text in 713-572-4610. Also on YouTube and Twitch, we're
01:59looking at the comments, but let's start with this one guys. What would you recommend as the,
02:03as the Houston restaurant you have to try? Okay. So I go, I'm going to go, this is just my
02:08routine.
02:08I'm going to go breakfast, lunch, dinner. Oh, you're going three. Okay. Yeah. I work for my
02:14daughter and I are probably going there after the show. I eat there probably four times a week.
02:17Avalon Diner for breakfast on West. There's three of them, but the timer is the iconic one. That's
02:23the original. That's the OG. That's where I go after the show with my iPad, start getting started
02:28on the next show. It's there are servers that have been working there since the seventies. It's yeah,
02:33that's breakfast for me. So Avalon Diner on Westheimer. Then got a shout out a sponsor,
02:39Beck's prime. But specifically, if you're somebody who is looking to maybe get a little exercise or
02:44see an iconic place in Houston, Memorial, if you're looking at a place to walk, Memorial Park
02:48has a Beck's prime right there. So you get in a nice, like three or four mile walk and then
02:53go
02:53eat a delicious juicy cheeseburger. That's true. That is, you're going to get an awesome American
02:58cheeseburger. Yes. And, uh, and it's the best cheeseburger in town, according to the Chronicle.
03:03It was one of the original premium burger places. Yes. That was like, when I got first
03:07got to Houston and I ate at Beck's, that was like the first time I'd ever had an experience
03:11like that. I'd never been to a place that like just specialized in premium burgers.
03:15Mesquite. It's awesome. And then dinner, I just stay in the neighborhood. The original
03:19OG Carrabba's on Kirby. Okay. It's awesome. Johnny Carraba might be there if you go there
03:23at times. So that's my breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Seth, what's yours?
03:27Okay. So, uh, barbecue, I had a hard time with it because I like you could, you could pick
03:32from several dozen awesome barbecue places. I felt like for, if you want to go to a place
03:38that a lot of people are going to ask, Oh, you went to Houston. Did you go to this barbecue
03:43place? I guess I'm thinking killings and Pinkertons are probably the two that are those that like
03:49that's if you're, if you're concerned about like when somebody says like, Oh, well, did
03:52you go to Pinkertons or some of those are the two that I think are probably the most commonly
03:57known? Yeah. And there's a new Pinkertons right over here at 59 Shepard. Yeah. I didn't
04:02know that. And then, um, for Tex-Mex, uh, the two places that I first went to when I came
04:08to Houston in 2002, which is the first places that I actually had like, like kind of premium
04:14Tex-Mex in my life was, uh, uh, well, okay, sorry. I'll say El Tampo for Tex-Mex and then
04:21just for Latin American cuisine, Churrasco's because like Churrasco's has, you know, they've
04:26got dishes from all over the Americas. We're going to Churrasco's for Father's Day on Sunday.
04:30You better get a Tres Leches when you're there. Absolutely. Oh my God. That Tres Leches
04:34is unbelievable. Those are still, when I take people from out of town to those places, they
04:39are there, but their eyes open up and they're like, Oh, this is nothing like that crap Tex-Mex
04:43place. You feel like you're somewhere else. So I'll push back on, uh, on your Tex-Mex recommendation.
04:49Yeah. I'm going to Ninfa's. Yeah. On navigation. That's a great spot. That's where fajitas were
04:56invented. Yeah. Mama Ninfa. So I'm going to go with Ninfa's. Were they actually invented
05:00there? Yeah. They were actually invented there. I did a story. So I used to do a podcast called
05:04CityCast Houston. It was more food, culture, life, politics, all that stuff. Right. And
05:08we did a whole deep dive into it. It was actually invented there. That's like inventing the sandwich.
05:13I know. That's pretty cool. And we have that right here. My, my recommendation though,
05:17is the best Indian Pakistani restaurant in the nation is right here in the city of Houston.
05:24No kidding. Off of 59 and Murphy. I heard it was in Green Bay. No, it's not. It's not in
05:29the Islamabad of the Midwest. Of Wisconsin. Of Wisconsin. But you got to go to Aga's. That's
05:35A-G-A apostrophe S. Aga's is the best South Asian food you'll ever get. Okay. Like my mom
05:43is the best cook. And I tell her to her face, Aga's is better than your food. Yeah. That's
05:48good. Yeah. Does she agree with you? Yeah. She's like, yes, let's go. Yeah. See, there's
05:52the validation right there. She's like, you stupid kids think I enjoy cooking. Yeah. I
05:57am happy to cede the title to somebody. I'm horrified to find out that I might get a little
06:02bit of a break. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. All right. So good. So we got them covered
06:05for food. What else are we covering them for? Let's do favorite places. And this could be
06:09personal, like places that you just enjoy. We are going to do favorite H-Town place,
06:14something that just screams uniquely Houston. Okay. We'll do that next. But I just want
06:18your favorite places that you would take somebody or you would recommend to somebody and they're
06:23just going to be like, yeah, that was awesome. Oh, okay. You know what? I'll change my answer
06:27that I was going to give. Because yeah, I would say for me, Memorial Park and the bayou along
06:37Allen Parkway are the places where I most enjoy just walking. And, uh, and that there's an
06:42especially beginning to like the trail system and Memorial Park and everything. So if you're,
06:46if you're in Houston, you're kind of overwhelmed by how much concrete there is and just how kind
06:51of frantic feeling everything is. There are refuges and you go to Memorial Park, check out
06:57the, uh, the nature center there and everything. Um, and then just along the, for anybody that
07:01runs that Allen Parkway trail system and everything. Yeah. We drove by that on the way to the
07:06game yesterday. You used to run that all the time when I lived over there. Yeah. I love
07:09it over there. Yep. Um, I would say I, I, Amy and I have really grown to like the museum
07:14district a lot. Yeah. I liked, I think we got a good museum scene here in town, like
07:18really good museums, um, in the museum area, a little side museum recommendation. That's
07:23not in the museum district, but it's a museum, the funeral museum, very underrated. What?
07:28There's a funeral museum here in Houston. I've never been underrated. What are they, uh,
07:32what kind of funerals today? They show like, they show like the, the, like, uh, famous
07:38funerals of government luminaries, like the evolution of how death is celebrated or commemorated
07:45in different countries. Interesting. The different type of hearsts and things like
07:49they've all showroom with the different cars that carry the car. Where's the best place
07:53to have your funeral? Like, where were you most impressed? I wonder if they were from what
07:59we saw at the funeral museum. Yeah. Yeah. Like if you could have your, what's your fantasy
08:03funeral? Like if I could be commemorated this way. Oh, right in the, at the 50 yard line
08:07at Notre Dame stadium. Oh, okay. I was thinking about like different countries, like whatever
08:12their customs are. America at Notre Dame stadium. Well, in some of those, uh, oh, in some of
08:17I can't, and they do have that. They have like how funerals are celebrated globally. Yeah.
08:22It's really interesting. There's one Asian country where it is a big deal. Like if you're
08:25a person of sin, it's like, it's a, it's an affair and it's not even if you're a person
08:30of significance, but it's a big deal for like helping your ascent into the afterlife. If
08:34you have a, yeah. And it's like they hire people to come out and mourn for you and everything.
08:39Oh, wow. Yeah. You've got like, I'd be good at that. You've got staged that you've got
08:43planted mourners. Yeah. Was there any reference of the undertaker there? The rest now, Amy
08:49haven't been in a while, but there should be, he should have his own wing at the funeral. He's
08:55the, they made funerals mainstream. They did an action as manager and an undertaker as
09:04a wrestler. Good call real. Um, so those, yeah, those are yours. I'm going to go old
09:08school. You got to go to NASA. We saw our guy, Freddie from Germany make a trip to NASA.
09:13You've got to go do the tour. It's so cool to see everything. Do the behind the scenes
09:18tour. It's worth it. It's fantastic. The cool thing about the tour, the thing that I liked
09:22the most about it or was the way that, um, they ride bikes around the campus there and
09:27everything. It feels like I liked that. It, I liked seeing all of these rocket scientists
09:32and everything riding around the campus on their bicycles and just thinking about like,
09:36man, these are kids that like grew up. Those people that work at NASA are kids that like when
09:41they were 10 years old, they dreamed of working at NASA, you know, like, and it's just, it's a
09:46cool, that part of it. It's not what you expect. It's like, it's, there's so many things
09:50when you go to NASA that it's, you see the control room for the Apollo missions. You're
09:53like, Holy crap. Yeah. It's there. The actual control is there still, but it's so it's like,
09:59it's the thing that blew me away was how underwhelming it was. It was like, Holy crap.
10:04They sent people into space from this, this little, like these tiny little monitors and
10:07everything. Like really it was a, it was the fact that they felt confident to send people
10:13into space with that equipment is incredible. It's interesting is you've talked before about
10:18the top gun effect and how kids saw top gun in the eighties and they all wanted to go
10:22into the Navy. Apollo 13 was in the mid nineties. I think I wonder what effect that had. Cause
10:28that could have an effect where like, I do not want to be an astronaut, but I would love
10:32to be one of the guys at mission control. And the Artemis effect is we just saw Artemis.
10:37Yeah. My 11 year old wants to be an astronaut. There you go. She's like, I want to do that
10:42is a big part of me. And I've been trying to make her go into space for the longest time.
10:46I was like, you're going to be the first woman on Mars. Yeah. And she's like, no, I don't
10:50want to do that. And now she's like, I want to go to Mars.
10:53But now, and now you, okay. So you don't have to be a, a, an astronaut helicopter parent,
10:57you don't want to run a picture, man. She's smoking weed in the capsule. She's like, we've
11:06lost context. Nah, she's just stoned. She's rebelling against her dad who forced her to be
11:13an astronaut. Okay. Quickly. Last one. Yep. Most H town place you have to experience. Okay. I,
11:20there's a place Amy and I go a lot called the music box theater and they listen to this
11:23show. It's a, it's a cast of, it's a, it's a musical place. It's theater. It's in city
11:28center and they do shows every Friday and Saturday. They, they sing covers of songs. They have
11:32theme shows like every six weeks, like they're in the middle of their sixties and seventies
11:36show right now. They do an 80s show. They do a Christmas show, all that. It's it's, I've
11:40never had a bad time there. Now all the songs they sing are in English. And I don't know
11:44if people are coming in globally here, if these are popular songs with them, but it is a
11:49fun thing and they weave a lot of comedy into it and stuff like that. That is, that's
11:52something we go to. We're going this weekend for father's day. We're going to
11:55Churrasco's on Sunday and we're going to music box on Saturday. That's awesome. Yeah.
11:58Yeah. So music box theater, thumbs up on the text line. People are saying the Houston
12:02rodeo, but that's not in session right now. No, it's not. Come back for that. We're trying
12:06to dupe them into stand for another 10 minutes. But if you want to watch people ride
12:09horses. Oh yes. Yeah. Yes. Uniquely Houston. I completely forgot. We talked about this. You
12:14go down like fifth ward airport road down south of the south of the city. If you want to see
12:20one of the most unique things, it's these little inside the city limits of Houston horse ranches
12:27and people riding horses and everything. It's really, really cool. I remember the first time
12:32I stumbled into it cause I'd never, you hear that. Oh yeah. People ride horses in Houston.
12:35They're like, yeah, whatever. And I, I, I pulled off onto some road cause I was lost and I'm like,
12:40Oh, Oh, these are the little horse ranches on city streets in Houston. This is bad
12:45ass. Yeah. It's awesome to see that. And P and it goes to the stereotype, right? Like,
12:49Oh yeah. They're just cowboys, but they're not cowboys riding it. Yeah.
12:52They say tomorrow. And it's not just white dudes either. Yeah. It's like blows stereotypes
12:58out the window. It's really cool. And it's very uniquely Houston. Yeah. Like of the four
13:02of the four largest cities in America, I'm pretty sure we're the only one that has that dynamic.
13:08New York's not doing it. Yeah. We've got a whole section within our city limits in the city
13:12that were, uh, where people had no mini horse ranches. No, there's not horse ranches. I lived
13:16in Chicago. Ain't happening in Chicago. There's no horse ranches on the South side. No, no, no,
13:21no, no, no. Unless we're doing how Sean calls heroin. He calls it horse horse. Yeah. He did a lot
13:26of horse in, uh, in Chicago. That's right. Yeah. I would be go down to Montrose. Okay. Go check out
13:31the entire neighborhood. It's such a fun Houston neighborhood, but then to end the day,
13:35go to cactus music. Okay. It's my favorite place in the city of Houston. You go, you
13:39get, you can get vinyls and hang out, listen to music. It's just, you walk in and you feel
13:44the Houston history, especially the music side. All right. So I'm taking some stuff away from
13:48this segment, just listening to you guys. So that was good.
13:50Good, good.
13:51Good.
