Transcript
00:00to mr mike florio from pro football talk mike what's up man thanks for making time for us
00:04guys how's it going today going well man it's going good dude um i know there's so much nfl
00:10stuff for us to talk about but i want to start with this brandon soarsby craziness and just
00:16i i was reading along everything you were writing throughout i never thought you could let that kid
00:21go play college football again and and now it appears whether whether people wanted it to
00:26happen or not he's not going to play college football again what do you make of this and
00:30what is kind of the precedent going forward here well the strongest hint that the supplemental
00:37draft was still an option for him came last week when texas tech released a 20 minute video and at
00:41one point one of the folks from texas tech said that soarsby's family had reached out in the middle
00:47of that intense blowback following the court ruling last monday asking are you guys okay and expressing
00:53this idea like we didn't expect this to be such a big deal and i think that that was the
00:59the
01:00foundation for the decision that was made yesterday because when the legal walls started to close in
01:05and it became clear that soarsby was not going to have clarity that he'd be available to play college
01:11football this year before the deadline came for applying for the supplemental draft the safest choice
01:18is to just pull the plug and go to the nfl because he could have let that june 22 date
01:23come and go
01:24hope that the order allowing him to play this season holds up but you had the big 12 trying to
01:32get a
01:32ruling that would have allowed them to sanction texas tech if he plays you have the ncaa appealing
01:37the ruling and asking for a decision by the start of college football season he could have ended up in
01:41a donut hole where he doesn't go to the nfl and he doesn't get to play for texas tech so
01:46he made i think
01:47the prudent choice and also i think driven by that just really strong reaction you imagine what it
01:53would have been like for him this year going into opposing stadiums and you know he becomes this
01:57focal point of the broader conversation about integrity and gambling etc so that doesn't surprise
02:03me at all the other part of your question as relates to precedent the precedents mixed
02:08the nfl when terrell prior entered the supplemental draft in 2011 when he was facing a five-game
02:14suspension from the ncaa the nfl suspended him five games to simulate what the ncaa did so there's
02:21concern among some of the teams that the nfl will do something to keep soresby off the field
02:25the count of that case on booty the patriots receiver he wrote a lengthy item in the players
02:31tribune earlier this year he had a gambling addiction he was betting on football when he was
02:35at lsu it didn't come to light until a year after he had entered the nfl the nfl never did
02:40anything
02:41to him about it so you could argue on one hand clean slate nothing that's happened matters on the
02:47other hand the nfl is aware of what's going on they're aware of the controversy and they've shown
02:52us time and again in situations like this they're going to do whatever they want to do but haven't
02:57there been guys that have been uh punished because of what they did prior to coming to the nfl
03:05the nfl takes the position that it can punish a guy for things that happen before they come to the
03:11nfl at one point it was just a factor in determining for example a personal conduct policy punishment
03:17like if tyree kiddo would ever have a personal conduct policy suspension an aggravating factor
03:23would be the incident when he was at oklahoma state that got him kicked out of school and he pleaded
03:27guilty to assaulting his girlfriend who was pregnant at the time that would become an aggravating
03:31factor but they've even gone beyond that in more recent years they reserve the right to impose any
03:37and all discipline that they want on a player for things that happened before they came to the nfl and
03:43i could see the commissioner there's enough there's enough looseness and laxity in the cba and the
03:49various policies to allow the commissioner if he wants to suspend soarsby for as much as the entire
03:55season i think there's enough there to let him do it now it'd be a big ugly fight but he
03:59can at least
03:59try to do it and right now nobody knows what the nfl is going to do and the nfl is
04:03very tight-lipped
04:03about it um mike i'd like to switch gears to another weird thing going on kind of around the nfl
04:11and
04:11it's the brandon iuke situation um i don't know how much you enjoy his dancing videos on instagram but
04:18you can't help but notice all the content being created by iuke as he seeks you know removal from
04:25san francisco where do you think that thing is where do you think that thing's going
04:29well you know all he had to do in hindsight we show up for the off-season program and they
04:36probably
04:36would have cut him then and there because number one you can't keep a player from participating in
04:42the off-season workouts and the practices number two if he had suffered some sort of an injury that
04:46would have wiped him out for the year they would have owed him 26 million dollars plus right now they
04:51don't owe him anything his guarantees were wiped out last year by things he didn't even challenge
04:56you know not being in contact with the team not showing up for treatment for his acl injury whatever
05:02it was they pulled the plug on his guarantee so right now they have no financial responsibility to
05:09him they were i believe squatting on his contract hoping that someone would try to do a deal for some
05:16you know low round pick rework his contract and you get something of value for him instead of just
05:22cutting him loose when he had those two critical videos last week of the 49ers and then deleted them
05:28and he posted the video on sunday where he's dancing and the caption was coming to an end zone near
05:32you
05:33it made me think that he's at least under the impression that they're getting ready to cut him loose and
05:38at this point what more do they gain he needs to show up for training camp and force their hand
05:42why do you want that distraction though if that's what you're going to do it makes sense to just go
05:46ahead and release him now and let him get on with his career and i'll be surprised if they don't
05:52release him and the key point will be first day of training camp he shows up i can't imagine that
05:58they would welcome him in welcome him in they can't lock him out they'd have to cut him at that
06:02point
06:02well the the little thing that's still hovering over his head which is kind of odd to jp and i
06:07the uh warrant for his arrest will that keep him from showing up then they have he didn't show again
06:17yeah and we're not talking about serious charges yeah right and it was stupid like
06:24if you take a video of your speedometer and you put it on social media you know they don't need
06:30a
06:30radar detector to prove that you were speeding so that that adds a weird little wrinkle to all of this
06:36he'll be subject to that but it's not a significant crime it's not the smartest thing in the world to
06:45be doing it's not exactly you know a safe prudent maneuvering of your vehicle but i don't know that
06:50that's a big issue in all of this i i think they're trying to lay the foundation from iuk's standpoint
06:56that the 49ers will just release him and he'll never be back in santa clara and he'll go sign with
07:02whoever is interested in signing him and everybody thinks the commanders are going to be at the front
07:05of the line do you think so well the jayden daniels connection is pretty strong and i could see
07:14daniels lobbying for it aggressively he needs as many good weapons as he can this year he needs to
07:19have a big third season to set himself up for a new contract after this year right now you got
07:24year
07:24one it was great last year injuries held him to seven games he needs to re-establish himself and so
07:29if you add a brand and iuk and he's got a comfort level with him and iuk's healthy and ready
07:33to go
07:33i could see daniels heavily advocating that adam peters is there he was with the 49ers when i
07:39was drafted they traded up to get him you know when he's healthy and when he's focused he can be
07:44very very good this whole thing became a problem because seven games into his new contract he tore
07:49the acl and then the relationship fell apart it was already disintegrating before that i'm surprised
07:53they signed him after everything that went on a couple of summers ago because it seemed like it
07:58wasn't going to work out right but if you had to give me one team and one team only i'd
08:03say the
08:03commanders would be that team yeah i do you think do you think he's mentally and physically ready to
08:13be a productive member on a of a football team i don't think anybody knows the answer that question
08:18i'm not comfortable making estimations about someone's mental health based on videos that are
08:24posted online and we've seen worse we've seen stuff that was over the top erratic i mean you know
08:30his videos were entertaining when he was going after the 49ers but i i i think that i think that
08:38it's always risky to try to come to conclusions about someone's mental state based upon videos they
08:44choose to put on social media physically yeah they'd have to give him a full physical and make sure that
08:48his knee's good to go they may put it through a workout it may not just be a situation where
08:52he shows up
08:52has a visit and signs a contract they may want to see what he does out on the field but
08:56uh yeah you
08:58want to kick those tires and make sure that everything's good to go before you would sign
09:01him because you know who knows what kind of money he's going to be looking for i mean a team
09:06may think
09:06we can get him to the minimum he may be thinking you know i still am capable of being a
09:10good player i
09:11want something more than that and that's going to be one of the challenges number one coming up with
09:14the right contract but number two coming to the the right comfort level that he is ready to go
09:19i i agree i i i think there's far too much like armchair psychiatrists of people with brandon iuke
09:26the behavior's been weird but we see weird behavior from players that want off nfl teams all the time
09:33like none of that's that rare this is kind of the playbook where you start just causing trouble on
09:37social media um i just the the two things i can't get past with him one the speeding is one
09:46thing
09:46it's dangerous it's reckless it shouldn't happen but posting a video of yourself speeding i find
09:52incredibly bizarre and crazy and two not fighting not using the union to fight for your cash like
09:58that stands out to me as far as do you want to be playing if you're willing to walk away
10:05from 25
10:05million dollars um i i just i don't have those answers mike and and what i'd like to do is
10:13ask you
10:13about actual football i imagine you're up for that right because all we do is talk about this
10:18hypothetical off-field stuff right um mike you are as plugged in as anybody around the league when you
10:25talk with folks about this commander's team what what are kind of the projections or the estimations
10:31for what they're going to have this fall you know every year you have three categories of teams you
10:36have the teams that we expect to be really good we have the teams that we expect to be really
10:39bad and
10:40then there's that cut of teams where we don't know what the hell to expect and i think with the
10:44commanders they fall right into that it all goes with the quarterback and will jayden daniels number
10:50one be healthy this year will he stay healthy will he play like he did in his rookie season that's
10:56going to be the key factor and you know we saw in the first couple of years with dan quinn
11:01adam peters
11:02under the josh harris ownership a bunch of older veteran players and they came in and they all played
11:08really well at some point you've got to shift into a draft and develop mindset so that that's going
11:15to be the key how much can their draft picks this year contribute will their younger guys step up
11:19for every bobby wagner that leaves is there a guy that you know previously was playing special teams
11:25that didn't get a whole lot of attention who can come in and play at a high level so i
11:30think they're
11:31they're firmly in that category of nobody knows what to expect and it could break either way
11:36i think that's fair how difficult do you think it's going to be for jayden to get used to a
11:41new
11:41offense well it's not going to be easy it's never easy when you have to when you have to learn
11:48new
11:48terminology new ways of thinking new ways of doing things and that's why i'm always a firm believer
11:54especially if you're in a position get a franchise quarterback in the draft you want to have an
11:58offensive coach because if you have a defensive coach and things go well you you end up seeing that
12:05guy goes somewhere else as a head coach and if things don't go well that guy gets fired but you
12:11want to have the quarterback and the coach slash offensive guru joined at the hip and together for
12:17as long as possible like sean payton and drew breeze were in new orleans like ben johnson and
12:21will be in chicago like kevin o'connell and whoever the vikings quarterback becomes will be sean mcveigh and
12:28matthew stafford you want that partnership and you don't want to have to pay a big price for success
12:34by having to go find another offensive coordinator i mean look at the eagles the past four years
12:38one year the offense is so good guy gets a head coaching job next year guy gets fired next year
12:44head coach next year fired you want to have continuity in that relationship with the quarterback
12:49the same play call it the same guy talking into the helmet that is an underrated dynamic in all of
12:54this when you have the same voice talking to you before the play and you can stack years on that
12:59that changes everything but the thing i wonder in this situation though this is not an offense that
13:04just has terminology this is offense he and the offensive coordinator put together so it may be
13:10exactly what he's used to hearing and listen the best offense and and tony dungy tells this story
13:18when he was the coach at tampa bay and they had fired the offensive coordinator he was interviewing
13:23candidates to take over and that was the days when they had mike all start work done
13:27and he said what's your plan for all start and done and the guy said well they're going to run
13:31our offense like no that's not the plan you got to have a plan for who we have what are
13:37you going
13:37to do to get the most out of what we have so i think the challenge in washington is going
13:42to be
13:43and it's simple when you think about it you tailor the attack you do everything to do the things that
13:49your guys do well do the things your quarterback does well stay away from the things he doesn't do well
13:54and make the offense make the playbook make the game plan match his skills and stay away from his
13:59limitations mike what do you think of the uh obviously massive contract extension patrick
14:06mahomes got it didn't surprise me because when they did that ultra long-term extension that ran
14:12what 10 years 450 million at least twice before they have moved the cash around to ensure that
14:19he's always near the top of the league and cash flow over the course of the next three or four
14:24seasons this was the moment where they finally decided we need to rip this up and basically do
14:29a new contract and that's what they've done and the cash flow is much much greater than it was
14:33it raises the bar for all the other quarterbacks who are in his same category and the biggest
14:38message is it shows the chiefs are pretty damn confident that he's going to be fine it would have
14:44been very easy to kick the can until patrick's back on the field playing like the patrick mahomes
14:50that we've come to know i think the chiefs are are supremely confident that guy is going to be back
14:56or they would have waited yeah i agree with that i yeah i totally agree and i think if if
15:02you're the
15:02chiefs and and think about the money patrick mahomes has made for clark hunt over the last 10 years or
15:08whatever that's a guy you you bet on um talking with our friend mike florio pro football talk you
15:15can give him a follow at pro football talk on social media check out the website pro football
15:19talk.com i'm on it probably three times a day um you mentioned the bears earlier i i find this
15:26weird
15:26parallel between the commanders and the bears in that washington had this really good 24 season where
15:32they got all the breaks last year the bears seemed to get all the breaks and had a really good
15:36season
15:36how do you think the bears respond in 26 well i mean this is going to be the challenge to
15:44have
15:44ben johnson in year two building on what they did last year that that that that luck and you know
15:53is it really luck is it the product of preparation and design there are so many little things that
15:58decide the outcome of the game weird fluky things whether the bounce of the ball bad calls for one side
16:04become good calls for the other side and you win games that maybe you should have lost to develop
16:09confidence look i i think that the only truly great teams are the ones that leave no doubt and
16:17that they aren't trying to pull a rabbit out of the hat in the fourth quarter and it's great to
16:21develop
16:21the ability to do that it's better to be up two scores in the fourth quarter and yeah this could
16:26be
16:26one of those years where if those close games start breaking the wrong way for the bears all of a
16:30sudden last year's magical season becomes a disappointment and uh the bar is higher much
16:37higher for the bears than it is for the commanders and i'd say the bears have one of the higher
16:41bars
16:42they've created real excitement and if they struggle out of the gates then it's going to be a real test
16:47for ben johnson to get things back on track but you know second year like we were talking about
16:51earlier the continuity with johnson and williams talking to him in the in the headset working with
16:57him through the the things he's seeing as your young quarterback the more different things you
17:02see the better equipped you are to make good decisions when you see patterns begin to repeat
17:07themselves caleb williams has a very high ceiling and this is his year that maybe he crashes the
17:13consensus top four top five quarterbacks in the entire league it's gonna be interesting man everybody
17:19i mean all the arm talent's incredible it's just yeah the the dumb stuff is incredible too um
17:24mike thank you for the time man always appreciate getting the chat with you thanks guys take care
17:29all right that's the great mike florio you can give him a follow at pro football talk check out the
