00:00As honourable members know, I came into politics for one reason, and that was to enact change.
00:05But to be able to work out where you're going, we must realise where we have come from.
00:10The Labour Party I joined is one that was chiselled out of the mines of the North East.
00:15It was hammered out of the shipyards of Govan, Liverpool and Belfast, and it was forged in
00:20the factories of the Industrial Revolution.
00:23Calloused hands, sore backs, people who did a hard day graft and asked for one thing in
00:28return, a government that has their back.
00:32That's the tradition I serve in this House, and it's the tradition that shaped that decision
00:36I took last week, and I resigned for several reasons.
00:40Firstly, because I no longer believe the defence investment plan was preparing for the wars
00:44we are most likely to fight.
00:46The character of warfare is changing at an exceptional speed.
00:51In Ukraine, a navy without a ship has destroyed a navy.
00:54A drone costing thousands can destroy a tank costing millions.
00:59A drone can now strike 2,000 kilometres into Russia at a fraction of the cost of a fighter jet.
