00:00It is the month of June and football heats up next month.
00:04That means, of course, college teams are back on the gridiron and so is the NFL in terms of training
00:08camp.
00:09But will Baker Mayfield be back on the gridiron?
00:13It still remains to be seen.
00:14He's looking for a contract extension.
00:16Could he potentially even hold out of camp and into the preseason?
00:20Let's hear from head coach Todd Bowles.
00:23As a bigger business, he's all about business.
00:25Contract stuff takes care of itself.
00:27That's the business side of it that you don't see, that everybody has to need what time.
00:31I'm sure he'll take care of it, but it doesn't make you so much.
00:34Yeah, I think there's really no rush here, Joe, because we are in the month of June.
00:38But Mayfield was like one of the MVP candidates in the NFL through the first eight or nine games of
00:43the season.
00:43Now, naturally, I don't know that he necessarily regressed.
00:46It's just the Bucs didn't play great football down the stretch.
00:48But in this day and age of poor play in the NFL, Baker Mayfield is not one of those.
00:53The Bucs are just going to have to step up and pay the guy.
00:55I mean, there's really no other alternative here.
00:59Well, that's the whole thing.
01:00Like, what's the what is your other choice then?
01:03So you have a quarterback, you have a franchise guy, you've got somebody that you know you can win.
01:08What's the choice here?
01:09You're not going to pay him in order to what?
01:11Go through a, you know, multiple different backup quarterbacks who aren't franchise worthy.
01:17You know, it's one of those spots where we like you, but we don't want to pay for you.
01:22Like, if you don't have a quarterback, what do you have in Tampa there?
01:26That's the big thing, right?
01:28Yeah.
01:28And not even, you know, 15 good quarterbacks in the NFL, I don't think anymore.
01:31Baker Mayfield's in that category.
01:33Like, you're just not going to find anyone else.
01:35The quarterbacks are getting paid.
01:36That's it.
01:37All right.
01:37Stephon Diggs could potentially get paid.
01:39Although, Joe, I don't think it will be a lot of money.
01:41At least he has his legal issues put behind him.
01:43The NFL closed its review of the receiver, citing insufficient evidence to support a personal conduct policy violation.
01:51So that paves the way for him to sign with someone.
01:53The Patriots have already moved on.
01:55Diggs at one point with Minnesota, certainly one of the best receivers in the NFL.
02:00He still has been productive, Joe, but he's not going to be the same receiver that he was in the
02:04past.
02:05We knew that.
02:05Kind of feels a little bit to me.
02:07I don't know if you agree with this.
02:08Like, the end of DeAndre Hopkins' career, like, I still think he's going to get a one-year contract with
02:13somebody, probably on a little bit of a prove-it deal.
02:16But New England, they've got A.J. Brown now, so they've moved on.
02:19I suppose he'll end up in camp with somebody, though, right?
02:23It's all about price, right?
02:26Every team would love to have him at the right price.
02:28So, I mean, he can still play.
02:31I'm wondering if there's a reunion in Buffalo in the near future on a one-year deal.
02:36So, but it all depends on him.
02:38If his asking price is through the roof, then he's going to have a lot of, he might play with
02:43a team that's only going to win six games here.
02:45But if he's willing to be realistic, I am sure he can play on a contender.
02:51Meanwhile, Broncos' Jonathan Cooper was arrested again on Thursday night on charges of domestic violence.
02:56And certainly his career at this point, definitely in some jeopardy.
03:01He's had a lot of legal issues as well.
03:04Also, the NFL will not discipline Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt after a misdemeanor domestic battery charge against him
03:13was dismissed last month.
03:14Merritt had been charged in April with allegedly causing bodily harm to his daughter and pleaded not guilty.
03:21The league's investigation found insufficient evidence of a personal conduct policy violation.
03:27And finally, some sad news from the National Football League.
03:30Once upon a time, a great edge rusher, defensive lineman Alden Smith in the NFL has passed away at the
03:37age of 36.
03:38No cause of death given.
03:40He played, of course, for the 49ers, was a very late pick in the seventh round and turned his entire
03:45life and career around by posting 19 and a half sacks in 2012.
03:50He earned a Pro Bowl and all pro honors.
03:53Went from the 49ers, was unhappy there.
03:56He ended up going to the Raiders, played in the Cowboys organization as well.
04:0149ers this weekend saying that they were devastated by his passing.
04:04And certainly we here at Sports Grid are as well.
04:07Joe, Alden Smith certainly had, you know, a share of stuff going on on the field.
04:12But when you hear a story like this, it's always hits you.
04:16Yeah, unfortunately, he had just as much going on off the field throughout.
04:21And it's there was a period of time, Craig, where I thought this guy was like Lawrence Taylor asked.
04:28He was unblockable.
04:30Like, I mean, no matter what teams did when he was with early on in those 49ers, my goodness, I
04:37thought he was going to be around a long time setting all sorts of records.
04:40It's just at 36 years old, such a sad story.
04:44Yeah, indeed it is.
04:46And certainly that beat goes on in the NFL with, I mean, don't want to assume anything here, but certainly
04:53mental health, a very hot topic in sports and should be as well.
04:56Got to take care of these guys who are putting their life in danger every day with those helmets.
05:00Welcome back to Prediction Markets Edge here on the early line.
05:04Let's take a look at some of the National Football League predictions that you can find over on Calci and
05:10taking a look with right now, Stefan Diggs being cleared by the National Football League to sign and play with
05:15another team.
05:16And it does not appear that he'll face any suspension for any off the field activities.
05:20Here are some, Joe, of the teams that are involved on Calci to potentially have him land.
05:27The Ravens at 38%, the Commanders at 19%, Buffalo at 12%, the Rams at 5%.
05:36You mentioned Buffalo earlier in the show at 12% is something that, Joe, potentially you could be interested in
05:42investing in.
05:43Ravens is an interesting one for me now that I see it.
05:46Obviously, Zay Flowers is their primary receiver, but they've really had a hard time finding secondary and sometimes third options.
05:54Same could be said for Washington as well.
05:58Yeah, and I think that's interesting.
06:01But I also think maybe the Rams, if he wants to go maybe ring shopping here, Craig, if he's more
06:09interested in winning more than anything else, you know, I mean, Puka Nakua, Devontae Adams, you throw in, you know,
06:18heck, maybe even Aaron Donald coming off the cap.
06:20Yeah, if you want to be a part of something very interesting, you know, for a little less money, what
06:26a chance to actually run it back to get to the Super Bowl.
06:30I don't know why the Rams can't be considered in that conversation either.
06:33And the Rams, of course, made the big acquisition to get Miles Garrett a few weeks ago, which puts them
06:40over on Kalshi as the favorite.
06:4224% of the tickets for them to win the Super Bowl are on them, followed by Seattle at 13%.
06:49And then you could basically make a case for anyone, Joe.
06:51I mean, we're still far away from trying to figure out who's going to get to the Super Bowl.
06:55Things change so quickly.
06:57But when you look at it, is there any team in particular that you'd like to take a flyer on
07:02in the prediction markets and just sort of ride the wave?
07:06It's, well, it's too chalky here at this point.
07:10And there's a lot of very much unknowns here.
07:13But, you know, the beautiful thing about the prediction markets, Craig, is it also not only do we have the
07:18yes option, but we have the no option here.
07:22And they all can't win it, right?
07:24They all can't run it back.
07:26But right now, there seems to be an all very chalky up at the top with the Seattles and the
07:32Rams.
07:33And they all can't win it.
07:35So there might be some value in saying, you know what?
07:38Don't think it's going to happen here.
07:40Maybe invest in a couple of no's across the board with some of those favorites.
07:46Now let's take a look at the AFC championship.
07:49And this is where it gets really interesting because certainly for the first time in a while last season,
07:54the Kansas City Chiefs did not make the playoffs.
07:56It would appear that Patrick Mahomes will be ready for, if not the first game of the season, Joe, maybe
08:01the second.
08:02I think that his return is, it feels imminent.
08:05But again, we'll find out what happens in training camp.
08:07But it's Buffalo, it's Baltimore, it's Kansas City.
08:10It feels like we've just been in the same cycle for the last few years.
08:14Do you think it's that same cycle this year again?
08:18Yeah.
08:19Well, I mean, we got to have Denver in the conversation here too as well, which is also another interesting
08:24spot for digs.
08:27Because outside of Jalen Waddell that the Broncos traded for, it's not like Bo Nix has got a ton of
08:33other weapons there.
08:34He can always use somebody else who can catch the ball, certainly going over the middle here.
08:41I think Denver is very much alive and well in the AFC East as well.
08:46But a healthy, that's going to be an interesting thing.
08:49Now you have a healthy Patrick Mahomes coming back.
08:53That, you know, it's going to be one or two of them, right?
08:57I'm not a big believer in what's going on with the Chargers.
08:59But I believe if anybody's going to get Kansas City, it's going to be Denver again this year.
09:06And how about the NFL's best record?
09:10Where, I guess what's happened in the prediction market space, Joe, from my understanding here, and correct me if I'm
09:17wrong,
09:17because I'm, you know, deep in the weeds with baseball this time of the year,
09:20is that when the schedule came out in the NFL, it was determined that the Lions had the easiest schedule.
09:27And so Cal, she has them at 12%.
09:30Is that accurate, that Detroit just has this softer schedule, I guess, based on last season?
09:36And is that something that you can invest in with teams and their records the year before?
09:44Well, no, I would.
09:45There's not a market that I would invest in this early, simply, Craig, for the fact that there's a lot
09:51of question marks around that team with Detroit.
09:54Namely, what are you going to do with that offensive line?
09:57You need to figure that out here, because that's the big issue there.
10:01We know defensively they'll likely be okay, but a lot of turnover last couple years with assistant coaches and whatnot.
10:09I would be cautious about just assuming that Detroit is going to—and look at the division they're in, right?
10:16Green Bay's not getting worse.
10:19You know, Chicago, everyone's darling, not going anywhere anytime soon.
10:23So, tough division to want to say, you know what?
10:26They're going to have the most wins when it comes down to it.
10:29I don't know about that.
10:30I have to see it to believe it.
10:32Yeah, I think that's a good analysis there, too.
10:35Because, again, teams going into the season, the record last year is sort of so irrelevant.
10:40And speaking of which, both the Cardinals and the Dolphins were fighting last year.
10:44They didn't come close to the playoffs, but they were fighting for playoff positioning.
10:48Like, those are two teams you thought that could make it, and they didn't.
10:51And now they're considered the worst teams in the league.
10:55Calci has them neck and neck for the worst record in the NFL with the Jets being close behind.
11:00But I think, Joe, this market is correct.
11:02I do think one of those two teams ends up with the worst record in the NFL.
11:07It's not going to be pretty here.
11:09They're both rebuilds, right?
11:11New coaching staffs, new everything coming in.
11:15And, yeah, quite honestly, they've got this next year to figure some things out here, both Arizona.
11:21Miami, at least, they pulled the plug and said, we got to restart.
11:25But it looks like they might have a quarterback that they can embrace over the next couple years, which is
11:31the most important position, right?
11:33So, new front office there.
11:35But I still go back to the Jets here.
11:38I sign Russell Wilson, get him out of the booth, un-retire him, get him to the backup, Gino, win
11:45two games, go get your quarterback this year in the draft at number one.
11:49And then we can look, hopefully, for the future for the New York Jets.
11:53But I think they're going to be terrible once again.
11:55You know, another team that didn't show up there for me is the Browns.
11:58Are the Browns supposed to be, like, this good team?
12:01It looks like, to me, that they're headed in the other direction.
12:04I know they made a trade, but it seemed like that trade with the Rams was more for the future
12:07than it is for the present.
12:09And sometimes, when a team sends you a signal like that, I think you've got to take it.
12:13So, we'll see.
