00:00Coach, let's see if we can talk a little bit about the Bucs here.
00:02What's been the issues?
00:04Has it been the injuries with our Bucs here?
00:07Has it been the inconsistency a little bit and maybe the new play caller?
00:11Just give me your insight of what you think has been a problem here with the Bucs here so far.
00:16I think they're missing the critical plays.
00:18They're not very far off.
00:19They should be two and two.
00:21Just make a couple plays.
00:22It's not like they're getting killed.
00:25Even with Jalen in there last week, they had their opportunities.
00:28You know, with a rookie quarterback, the defense is going to have to play lights out, get a couple turnovers,
00:34get them short fields.
00:35And that's the way they're going to have to play right now.
00:37But I was surprised with his poise.
00:40You know, the interceptions are going to happen with the rookie playing in there.
00:44But, you know, I can't blame it on injuries and definitely not talent.
00:48They've got plenty of talent.
00:49It's just a matter of guys just not making the right play.
00:53I don't think the offensive line is playing up to their potential right now because that's a really good offensive
00:57line.
00:57I've seen them play a lot better.
01:03They've lost some good leadership, but I think there's plenty of leaders there, you know.
01:07And so I'm expecting them to be turned around.
01:11Coach, would you agree when you get a new play caller in there, Zach Robinson, you got him up from
01:16Atlanta.
01:17You tell me, Coach, how long does that usually take?
01:19Because I'm watching the same situation going on a little bit in Philadelphia.
01:23They're kind of chaotic right now.
01:25They're kind of off sync, too.
01:27How hard and how difficult is that to get everyone on the same page?
01:31And like you said, when you've got personnel changes going in and out, like you, hey, you and I will
01:35always say this.
01:36Injuries are not a factor in the NFL.
01:38Let's go play 60.
01:39Next dude up.
01:40But when you're losing critical players at critical situations like the quarterback, an offensive lineman, new play caller, is that
01:48kind of what we're saying right here and where we are with this team?
01:51Yeah, I think you're seeing that with the Chargers, the Eagles a little bit, and the Bucs all had that
01:58turnover.
02:00And, I mean, we know Justin Herbert's a hell of a player.
02:02We know Baker's a hell of a player.
02:04So it's getting that, finding out what my guys can do best and doing that.
02:09You know, Coach one told me, he said, Coach, this guy can't do that.
02:13I said, why the hell are we asking him to do that then?
02:15If we don't ask guys to do shit they can't do, all right, let's do what they can do.
02:20And I think finding that out for all these guys and all these teams right now, that's what September's all
02:26about.
02:26You hope to scratch a few out as you're learning, you know, because Coach Bryant always said, you learn just
02:33as about almost losing as you do losing.
02:36And so it's like, scratch them out.
02:40Coach, you told me, you know, a couple years ago that you had a lot to do with Baker Mayfield
02:46going to the Buccaneers.
02:47And this was something that you were very proud of on him going to the Buccaneers.
02:51Coach, the deal that they gave him, are you surprised?
02:55Are you, like, really proud of what he's done and where he was?
03:00Because, Coach, let's look at it.
03:01This guy was a scout team defensive end in Carolina.
03:05He was sent to the Rams, and then he comes to Tampa.
03:09And before you know it, here he is with a brand-new three-year contract and one of the highest
03:14-paid players.
03:15I mean, it's truly one of the greatest reclamation projects that we've seen in the league over the last three
03:20years.
03:21Yeah, he's earned it.
03:22I mean, in my opinion, he's earned it.
03:23I mean, it's not easy to follow Tom Brady.
03:26And I knew he had the personality that could do it.
03:29You know, I was with CBS.
03:30I did a couple of Browns games and went to practice on Friday and watched this guy compete.
03:36And players loved him, absolutely loved him.
03:38And, you know, people forget he was Rookie of the Year and the Cleveland Browns beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in
03:43the playoffs.
03:44I don't think that's happened in a long time.
03:47But Baker Mayfield is the real deal.
03:49And the guys love him.
03:51I just wish every now and then he'd throw the damn ball away.
03:54But it's not his nature.
03:56And you don't want to take that out of a guy.
03:57But I think we can play a little bit smarter and never play scared, but play a little smarter.
04:02Coach, how do you protect a guy in today's NFL from that?
04:06I mean, this was my criticism of Baker was that, hey, look, man, I love you running for the first
04:12down.
04:13But in week two, I need you coming back and playing the following week.
04:17It's a long game of attrition, as you know.
04:20And you've got to be smart out there.
04:22And I've always thought that that was one of the things.
04:24How do you coach that fine line?
04:26You know, Coach, I'd rather pull a dude off the ledge and push him to it.
04:30So I get that and what you got in a football player there.
04:33But how do you manage that when you've got a player like that with that mentality?
04:38It's really, really hard.
04:39I think these young guys, when you look at J.J. McCarthy and Jackson Dart and all these young guys
04:44that run around,
04:47you don't need to prove how tough you are.
04:49We know you're tough.
04:50You know, Baker, everybody knows he's the toughest son of a bitch on the team.
04:54But it's a matter of availability.
04:57They have to realize availability is more important than that one first down you might get in taking that shot
05:03and coming back next week.
05:07And it's really hard.
05:08I think a little bit of experience and a few injuries will do it.
05:12You know, I mean, it's a matter of hopefully you don't get too many leg injuries where you can't run
05:16anymore.
05:17That's kind of what happened to Russell Wilson.
05:18He got some leg injuries and all of a sudden what he did so great, all that scrambling was gone.
05:24You know, and if you're depending on scrambling, you're probably not getting better as a quarterback.
