00:00Welcome back to Newswire. Hopefully you got off to a good start in fantasy football in week one.
00:05As for me, that would be a no. But for a lot of you, hopefully it was a yes. It's a long season.
00:09Let's bring in Joe Pizzoppia of Fantasy Pros and, of course, Fantasy Sports today
00:14to talk about the beginning of this very long fantasy football season.
00:18What's going on, Joe? Great to have you back here on Newswire.
00:21We do not have a lot of time here on the show, so let's dive into it.
00:25Let's go over the winners in fantasy football in week one.
00:28And I had one of these guys and still lost.
00:31Emeka Buka, I get four for 67 and two touchdowns and still lose?
00:35I guess you could probably guess who my quarterback and wide receiver were if that was the case.
00:39You just close your eyes and you can predict it by the end of this segment.
00:43Packers offense, three touchdowns. They look great.
00:47Travis Etienne out of nowhere with 143 yards and three touchdowns.
00:50So good that they traded another running back on the team this past week.
00:53I'm guessing that was partially the reason. So let's go over the winners first.
00:56Well, look, by Travis Etienne, I will take offense to the out of nowhere.
01:00He was RB3 two years ago in fantasy football. So last year he was hurt.
01:05He was never healthy the entire season. And I think the process that I had this offseason was
01:10if everyone is buying back in on Christian McCaffrey coming back and being an RB1 again,
01:16then why do we not say the same thing about Travis Etienne?
01:18We got a new head coach, a coach whose style matches up very well with his style of play.
01:22And here we are one game into the season. Now, granted, it was against Carolina Panthers defense
01:27against the run. They are terrible. Look for all the James Conner props this week.
01:30I can tell you that right now, all the overs. But at the same time, it was a very good performance
01:35and good enough where Tank Bigsby gets dealt to the Eagles just a day later.
01:38And now we're in a situation where Bachel Tootin will work, but it's Travis Etienne's backfield.
01:43He's in the last year of his contract. They're going to burn and churn him most likely.
01:45So a big win for him. Jordan Love looked very healthy. I wish all his receivers were,
01:51but he's making the most of it, and that's very good. The Packers defense looks very good as well.
01:55The more Micah Parsons are going to play next week, that's even better.
01:59And then, look, when you're just looking around, Ibuka is a star. He is going to be a league winner.
02:03And sometimes losing in week one is a good thing, Craig. It's a lot of weird stuff,
02:07a lot of anomalies that happen in week one. But I would say consistently, you know,
02:11if you at least get guys on your team that look like they're the people you invested in,
02:16if you had Joe Burrow or if you had Dak Prescott as your quarterback, things will turn around.
02:21I wouldn't cry too much. I'm pretty sure Joe Burrow and Megha Egbuka will both perform well this year.
02:26So you got the quarterback right, so now you just need to get the wide receiver right that I had,
02:31that I had too. It's easy.
02:32Did you have the Chase Burrow stash?
02:34There you go. Hello. Okay, so I lose. Yeah, so I lose.
02:37I think it'll work out for you the next couple of weeks.
02:39I'm not worried. I'm not worried.
02:40Yeah, I mean, it was an easy loss for me once I saw the outcome of that game.
02:45All right, so now here's where the concern comes in for the week one fantasy losers.
02:50Now, if you had Russell Wilson even in a flex or two quarterback, that's on you, right?
02:54Like, I mean, you were silly enough to believe that there would be a chance.
02:58Already talked that he's going to lose his gig, and he will within two or three weeks.
03:01The Dolphins offense, quite frankly, Joe, I don't know what to make of this.
03:06It was stunning that they could get absolutely nothing going against the Colts defense.
03:09That was passable, at least, to get through, and it definitely looks like Kenneth Walker
03:14is in a timeshare, to say the very least.
03:17So maybe a little bit of a bump for Charbonnet, but I don't even know that there really is.
03:20It feels like Seattle's offense is just going to mix the two, and you're going to be guessing
03:24all season long on those two guys.
03:26Yeah, look, I thought the Dolphins were dysfunctional, and they would be bad this year,
03:30but I didn't think they were going to get blown out by the Colts in week one bad.
03:33Like, I don't think anybody thought that.
03:35Neither did Vegas, too.
03:36When you look at the line, they thought this game was going to be pretty tight.
03:38It was not.
03:39Now, look, they have the Patriots at home this week.
03:42You would think they'd get back to running the football, get back to some basics here.
03:45Tua did not look great in this game at all.
03:48You can make the case at this point, too.
03:50Like, at one point, do you want to start looking at other guys?
03:52Do you want to get a look at Zach Wilson and his offense at some point?
03:54The Tyree kill situation continues to be one that is a negative.
03:57So, the Dolphins were just absolutely awful.
04:00Russell Wilson was also awful, but, again, we don't have time to throw the ball in the pocket.
04:05That is a problem for Russell Wilson.
04:06And until Thomas is healthy, they're probably not going to have that.
04:09But keep an eye on that Thomas injury on the offensive line, too, because until he is healthy,
04:14you really want to be careful about putting Jackson Dart into that scenario.
04:17You want Jackson Dart to get off to a good start of his career,
04:20so you want to make sure the offensive line is as tight as it could possibly be
04:23and as healthy as it can be.
04:24So, pay attention to that as well.
04:26And then the Ken Walker situation in Seattle.
04:28I think this was surprising to a lot of people.
04:30I wasn't a big Ken Walker guy coming into this year,
04:32but they did tell us that Zach Charbonnet was going to have a role,
04:35and my goodness, he sure did.
04:37So, we'll see if this carries over.
04:39It could also just be a week one anomaly, right,
04:42where it was a game plan situation here,
04:44where it just worked out for Charbonnet better.
04:46But if you invested early in Ken Walker,
04:48there's a lot of reason to be concerned right now.
04:50I wouldn't be jumping off the cliff or dropping him or anything like that.
04:54But I do think it's a situation where you've got to look for some insurance
04:56at the running back position if you do have Walker.
04:59Dolphins only had 200 total yards, by the way, in that game,
05:02and most of them were late in the game.
05:05Really disappointing performance for them going in.
05:07All right, so the waiver wire going into this week,
05:09you know, some people have waivers where they have to choose
05:12if they want to use it on a player that's available this week
05:14or even where they could buy the player, you know,
05:17players, so to speak, with the free agent acquisition.
05:19It just depends on the kind of league you're playing in.
05:21But here are some of the names.
05:22The easiest one on the board is Hollywood Brown
05:25because you would make the assumption that if Worthy is out,
05:29that Brown would be the guy to get.
05:31But we've been doing this with the Chiefs for five years, Joe,
05:33and this never works.
05:34But, yeah, go ahead, try Brown, I guess, this week.
05:36It just never works, whoever it is.
05:39Samson, he played very well for the Browns.
05:41Benson, who I love a lot later in the year,
05:43have him everywhere, hopeful that that works out at some point.
05:46Tillman, really good for the Browns, too.
05:49Big target for Joe Flacco.
05:50And Quentin Johnson looked fantastic in week one,
05:53even with Keenan Allen and with the other wide receivers
05:56that they have and McConkie, too.
05:58So I think that at least three of these are very well pickups going into
06:02and maybe even starting going into week two.
06:05Well, Samson and Tillman were two players that we were talking about
06:07on our show on Sunday mornings for the last two weeks.
06:10Pick them up.
06:10Pick them up for free.
06:11We talked about it the last draft weekend, too.
06:13Just draft them.
06:14They're their last-round picks, pretty much.
06:16You can probably get these guys.
06:17But Samson looks like, by far, the most dynamic runner in this backfield.
06:22Jerome Ford's just a guy.
06:23And Quinshawn Judkins, we still don't know when he's going to play, okay?
06:26Just because he signed his contract.
06:28Remember, he missed all of training camp.
06:30He was at OTAs, but he's still going to face
06:32league disciplinary action at some point.
06:34So he's going to miss some time, most likely, this year.
06:36So, I mean, week eight, maybe that's when Quinshawn Judkins
06:40can make an impact in fantasy, potentially.
06:41And I don't think that's overstating it.
06:43And even when he does, it doesn't mean Dylan Sampson goes away.
06:46And Cedric Tillman, I think, fits the style of Joe Flacco
06:48much better than Jerry Judy does.
06:50And we've seen that in the past, and we saw it again on display.
06:54Joe Flacco likes to throw the ball downfield and be aggressive.
06:56Cedric Tillman's more that guy.
06:57And you see, you know, in the past, it was Njoku over the middle.
07:00But this time, it was Howard Fannin, too.
07:02So if you're looking for tight ends because, you know,
07:05you have an injury to George Kittle.
07:07There's a couple other tight end injuries that are creeping up all over.
07:10Brock Bowers' health is a little questionable this week.
07:12I think Fannin is definitely a guy to look at.
07:14Brenton Strange, another tight end to look at as well.
07:17You mentioned Quentin Johnston.
07:18Look, we've been down this road before with Quentin Johnston,
07:21but he's also never been this motivated either.
07:23He's in a scenario where they did draft Trey Harris.
07:26They did bring in Keenan Allen.
07:28So it's amazing what a little competition for your job might do to a guy.
07:32And it wasn't like at TCU he wasn't a good player.
07:35Quentin Johnston was a really incredible player in college,
07:38but it's never translated to the pros.
07:41I'm not saying to empty the fab budget on him,
07:43but I think it's a player that if you're a light at wide receiver,
07:46you'd rather have.
07:46I think Tillman, personally, I'd rather have over Quentin Johnston,
07:50despite the two touchdown performance.
07:52And coming back to Hollywood Brown, another guy to talk about here.
07:54Hollywood Brown is a little trappy.
07:57And what I mean by that is, at some point,
07:59you're going to get Rushy Rice back.
08:00At some point, Xavier Worthy is going to be healthy again.
08:03So if you have one of those two players,
08:04I think Hollywood Brown makes a little bit more sense to invest in,
08:07maybe even pay a little bit of a premium,
08:09because you don't want to go the month of September light at wide receiver.
08:12And Hollywood Brown is going to get some run, but he is fragile.
08:16He is on a time clock as well,
08:18where eventually I think the Hollywood Brown usefulness runs out on that shot clock.
08:23So keep that in mind when you're bidding.
08:25It's only week one.
08:26Let's not go crazy.
08:27There's nobody here to empty the fab, you know, budget on completely.
08:31Right.
08:31There's nobody you're going is 50%, but you did mention Trey Benson.
08:34And the fact that he did work as much as he did,
08:36this is something where you want to keep an eye on this week.
08:39One, a lot of backfields will work in tandem because guys aren't up to a hundred percent.
08:42They don't have that game stamina yet.
08:45So that's not an odd thing to see.
08:47If we see it in week two, I think that's even more telling.
08:50So I would be ahead of the curve, picking up Benson if you can as well.
08:53Yeah.
08:53And if you need a tight end,
08:54you mentioned strange and maybe even the 49ers backup.
08:57If you have George Kittle real quick, before we go,
09:00this is my biggest regret in draft day.
09:02I thought I was going to get Tyler Warren.
09:04Somebody picked them.
09:05Even I would have picked them three rounds early.
09:06Somebody picked them like five rounds early outside of Bowers.
09:09Is there anybody else you would start a tight end over Warren Joe?
09:12Honestly.
09:13Yeah.
09:14Still McBride, but look, Tyler Warren,
09:16and you're a hundred percent right at the end of draft season,
09:18his ADP went flying up and with good reason because of,
09:21you know, shows like all.
09:22All right.
09:24We'll be back.
