01:30That really challenged the character of a team that has so many new pieces that we
01:36didn't really know how we would react as a team.
01:40This is the kind of game where I think you can say, there's something wrong with this
01:43team.
01:44Of course, all the headlines tomorrow will be, what is wrong with Tom Brady?
01:47I think that what you saw last night, it was really a demystification of the Belichick
01:53Brady era.
01:55In other words, there's no reason to be scared of them just because it's Brady and Belichick.
02:03If this continues on for another five or six weeks, believe the rumblings will start that
02:09this could be Tom Brady's last year in New England.
02:11It's just part of the nature of being on the New England Patriots, you know, just one bad
02:15game can make a lot of noise out there.
02:19The plight of a two and two team rarely dominates a news cycle.
02:24But these are the Patriots, the team of the 2000s.
02:29Back to back, three out of four.
02:33The team that won three Super Bowls in four years.
02:37Led by a head coach as respected as he is reviled.
02:42And a quarterback whose underdog origins have been eclipsed by his superstar status.
02:47That pass was prettier than a quarterback and his wife together are as a couple.
02:52While the decade had passed since a championship banner was unveiled in Foxborough, New England's
02:58dominance never seemed to cease.
03:02Touchdown, Patriots!
03:04Tom Brady and Randy Morris, and they each have set NFL records on the go-ahead touchdown.
03:11Touchdown.
03:12The Patriots made it back to the Super Bowl following the 2007 and 2011 seasons.
03:18But on both occasions, they failed to make the final stop.
03:22Twice undone by miraculous catches.
03:25Tyree and Harrison all over him.
03:27The ball was on his helmet.
03:29That's a heck of a throw and a heck of a catch by Mario Manningham.
03:35As the 2014 season approached, it seemed the roster was being constructed
03:40to prevent Lightning from striking a third time.
03:44That's the way to get us off the field.
03:47Darrell Revis is signing with the Patriots.
03:49That was such a good move.
03:52And to get to Darrell Revis.
03:55How many people remember he played on this team?
03:58Shock waves up and down the East Coast.
04:01To down it off on local sports talk radio.
04:03Well, the snow does suck, but it does feel like Christmas getting reaving.
04:08New England's aggressive offseason somehow managed to heighten expectations
04:12for a team that had been to three consecutive conference championships.
04:17You know, as a veteran player, you looked around and you saw,
04:21we got some players, we're looking all right.
04:24Let's just kind of, let's keep you here and let's see where this takes us.
04:28Definitely felt like we had a strong team
04:29and that we could definitely go far into the playoffs with the squad that we had.
04:35Yet four games into the season,
04:37the optimism that had surrounded the team had vanished.
04:42The Patriots were no longer considered title contenders.
04:46Much of the blame was placed on the team's 37-year-old quarterback.
04:51The quarterback was just going to be evaluated between the two and three.
05:00I couldn't believe it.
05:02There were so many whispers.
05:06It's probably because the guy just looks good.
05:10So many whispers of putting Jimmy Garoppolo in.
05:13Jimmy Garoppolo.
05:14Let him start.
05:16Let him play.
05:17Let him play.
05:21People that actually felt it was time to bench Tom Brady.
05:24You have one of the best quarterbacks,
05:26probably the best quarterback of all time.
05:29It's just kind of ridiculous that, you know, people jump off that bandwagon.
05:34And I hope they keep on doing it because it just fires them up.
05:37You know, he's that kind of guy.
05:39So, you know, all the people out there that do that, you know, keep it coming.
05:44You know, he likes that stuff.
05:47While fans and the media were busy pointing fingers, the team was looking forward to its
05:52next challenge.
05:53You mentioned Tom's age at the draft.
05:56We're on to Cincinnati.
05:58What do you think having a 37-year-old?
06:00We're on to Cincinnati.
06:01The second pick in the 2010 NFL drafts.
06:04The New England Patriots select Rob Gronkowski.
06:09Tight end, Arizona.
06:12I was actually kind of disappointed I wasn't drafted in the first round.
06:16But I can tell you this.
06:17When you get that phone call, it was just an unbelievable feeling.
06:21Rob.
06:23Congratulations.
06:26The Patriots selection with Rob Gronkowski was a gamble.
06:31A back injury forced the tight end to sit out his final season at the University of Arizona.
06:36But on draft night, a healthy Gronkowski gave Patriot fans a glimpse of the energy that he
06:41would bring on and off the field.
06:45I was just so excited.
06:47I was out there with my brothers, a couple of my friends out there on the stage.
06:50So just put the helmet on and went a little crazy.
06:52It's just a part of my atmosphere in my house.
06:57Gronkowski became an instant star, scoring 27 touchdowns in his first two seasons.
07:03Touchdown.
07:04Rob Gronkowski.
07:07During his five years in the NFL, the only places Gronkowski has been spotted more than
07:13the end zone are Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
07:17The Gronks' larger-than-life image and off-field antics have overshadowed what his teammates
07:23have known for years.
07:25For Rob Gronkowski, football is a way of life.
07:29He gets a bad rap on some of that stuff.
07:31But I can tell you right now, it's unbelievable to see how disciplined he is when it comes to
07:35how he eats.
07:37He'll peel off some of the carbs of some things.
07:40And you can tell that he's counting his calories in his head.
07:43We watch on TV, and he'll just say, let's do 30 push-ups.
07:48And, you know, we'll do 30 push-ups for no reason at all.
07:52He just wants to get jacked.
07:54It's just one of those things where he truly just loves football.
07:59Me too, and I always put first, is the game of football.
08:03However, a laundry list of injuries shortened Gronkowski's 2012 and 2013 seasons.
08:12One arm injury leading to another arm injury, coming back, having back surgery, coming back
08:17again the following season, having a knee surgery.
08:20Just the way that my seasons were ending, just the way you don't want it to go.
08:26The first month of the 2014 season had not gone the way Gronkowski or the Patriots wanted.
08:32But as others fixated on what went wrong, Bill Belichick's team was focused on making
08:37things right.
08:40Do you feel like the talent you have here is good?
08:42We're getting ready for Cincinnati.
08:44I thought it was a great, great press conference.
08:46On to Cincinnati, it was.
08:47I mean, who wanted to talk about that Kansas City game?
08:50We just got blown out on Monday Night Football.
08:53Ain't no one wanted to talk about that game no more.
08:55So on to Cincinnati, couldn't have been any better answer.
08:59They take the field versus Cincinnati with so much outside noise amplified about this
09:04team, where it's headed, here it's...
09:07Looks like another primetime game.
09:09You better do your job.
09:112014 and beyond.
09:13I know it's early.
09:14Hard to call many of these games four or five weeks into it.
09:17Must wins.
09:18When I look at this game with the Patriots, tonight is a must win.
09:21In week five, Rob Gronkowski and the Patriots silenced their critics with a breakout performance.
09:28I had four games under my belt now.
09:31My knee used to the hitting, the tackling, and I just felt like going to the Cincinnati
09:35game, my body was prepared.
09:42Shotgun, step to top, throws down the middle, for it, rock at the left, out of a tackle, into
09:47the end zone.
09:47On his feet, with a touchdown for the Patriots.
09:5187 is back.
09:54It just showed, you know, all right, this guy's back.
09:57He's the Gronk.
09:59The Gronk is here.
10:00New England comes back after the loss to Kansas City.
10:03Thrashes Cincinnati by a 43-17 final.
10:07It's amazing how things change in five days in the National Football League.
10:12You see that high step, baby?
10:14I never high stepped, ever.
10:16Way to go, beast mode!
10:20It was not a coincidence that Rob Gronkowski's return to Pro Bowl form coincided with Tom Brady's
10:26and the Patriots' resurgence.
10:31Just another game where our team was rolling.
10:34Tom was on fire.
10:35He was throwing touchdown passes everywhere, left and right.
10:39Anyone at any time in our offense can come out and have a big day, but that just happened
10:43to be my day.
11:08Tom put a nice pass right where I can get it when we're at safety.
11:12Try to reach for it, but miss.
11:14And then I just had to make one play.
11:19To the side a little bit, went around him and just brought it to the house.
11:35New England scored a season-high 51 points versus the Bears and won their fourth straight game.
11:43The Patriots were 6-2, and Week 9's marquee matchup would go a long way towards determining
11:48where they ranked in the AFC.
11:50Julian Edelman!
11:53It's something I've dealt with my whole life.
11:56You know, I've never been big enough, fast enough, or strong enough to play.
12:00You know, my dad would always say, let's just, you know, worry about what we can worry about.
12:05Let's go out and practice.
12:07Pignani looks to pass as a receiver there.
12:10Edelman!
12:11Who else?
12:12I started playing quarterback, and I'd have my older brother out there spotting it up,
12:17and he'd have my little sister, you know, trying to distract me while I was throwing,
12:21and he'd have a broom, you know, adapt to this system here in New England, you know, pretty quickly.
12:30Julian Edelman may have taken to the Patriot way instantly,
12:33but taking the field would be a different story.
12:37The former Kent State quarterback was transitioning to receiver,
12:40and he was trying to earn a spot on a roster that featured Randy Moss and Wes Welker.
12:46It was one of those things where I learned from them just watching.
12:51You know, those guys were technicians out there, and, you know,
12:56you could take something from each of them.
13:00It was Tom Brady's top target, surpassing 1,000 receiving yards for the first time.
13:07But with the new role came new pressures.
13:12Now it changes from, all right, you're trying to make the team to now you better do stuff
13:17because you've showed that you can do it, and you want to do it consistently.
13:23You don't want to just put up one year and go away.
13:27You know, you see a guy like Wes Welker who's done it,
13:29and then you see guys like Troy Brown that did it, Dion Branch that did it.
13:33You know, you see all these players that have played in this organization.
13:37He kind of fires you up to try to want to do that as well.
13:41Let's go, baby. Let's go. Rock and roll.
13:44Week 9, Mentor and Protégé were on the same field with their battling for 80.
13:49It's kind of what's where I...
13:52Let's go.
13:53Hey, what?
13:54Hey, what?
13:55We're in the line of saline toward Adam and Mattar's homeless six.
13:58What a single time of defense.
14:00And the right side of the agency.
14:01Oh, the two in trade.
14:02What can do they do it?
14:04Let it do it, let it take it.
14:07Let it do it.
14:08Let it do it.
14:10Let it do it.
15:23Freak show.
15:24My God, I've seen it all now by this guy.
15:27If we're on the bench and we jump off the bench and run all the way up into the white,
15:33that means it's something that we've probably never seen.
15:35And I could think of two times since I've been here.
15:38That catch that Gronk made and the Randy Moss catch my rookie year in the back of the end
15:43zone versus the Jets.
15:44Because you just don't see that every day.
15:46You know, there's guys in the middle trying to kill him, take his head off, and he reaches
15:50back with one hand and catches him.
15:51Dude, that's unbelievable.
15:53How the did you catch that?
15:54He definitely visibly as a football player.
16:09One hand snagged it.
16:11When I saw that guy, I was super impressed with it.
16:19Hey, same year does it against the Giants, and everybody wanted to do the Odell.
16:272014 and one-handed catches like this.
16:34Visually myself doing it, and it did happen a few weeks later, which is unbelievable.
16:38We put ourselves in a decent position here.
16:40We've got a long way to go.
16:41I'm just telling you now, seven games isn't going to win anything in this league, okay?
16:44It's just not anywhere near enough.
16:47We've got a long way to go.
16:48Our best.
16:49I honor myself, Chum.
16:52We felt like that stretch was the reason why we were here.
16:57And if we couldn't play well during that stretch, then, you know, there was really no point
17:03to have all these guys in a secondary and, you know, think that you were any good if you
17:08couldn't play against the best in the NFL.
17:11The secondary's lone returning starter from 2013, Devin McCourty was thrust into a leadership
17:20position.
17:21You know, Dev was kind of the guy back there that everyone kind of looked at.
17:26He knew all the calls.
17:29He's been here for a while.
17:30He knew what the coaches kind of wanted.
17:33Let's terminate today, fellas!
17:36This is all day!
17:37Oh!
17:38Let's go!
17:39Come on!
17:401, 2, 3!
17:43But McCourty himself was fielding a relatively new position.
17:49Hey, if my internet would work, that would be...
17:52The 2010...
17:56McCourty struggled the next two seasons and was moved to safety.
18:06When you're not playing well and they switch your position, there's not much you can say.
18:15You just take the position change and try to do as well as possible.
18:26It's possible because you know in this league, once you switch positions...
18:33If you don't do well there, it's probably out the door next, so...
18:41When I moved to safety, I was just trying to get better at it.
19:07The 2014 Patriots looked like a championship team in week 11.
19:13The 2014 Patriots looked like a championship team in week 11.
19:13Physically dominating the Colts.
19:16Ball batted away by Rebus and deflected to McCourty.
19:21Devin weaves his way across the 30-yard line.
19:26Go-i!
19:27Go-i!
19:27Go-i!
19:28Go-i!
19:29Go-i!
19:30Go-i!
19:30Go-i!
19:31Aided by the New England six-man offensive line, Jonas Gray ran for 201 yards and four scores.
19:43He then proceeded to never play in the NFL again, I believe.
19:50Way to under center, gives it to Gray, he runs it left, he runs it to the end zone for
19:55the fourth time!
19:56Touchdown Patriots!
19:57Money!
19:58Put your bike!
19:59And now we're gonna take your kicks!
20:04Bullies in the schoolyard!
20:06Can't stop it!
20:08Go-i!
20:09Go-i!
20:09I said get one more!
20:11Why not another?
20:12That's it!
20:13Rob Gronkowski was happy to attend Jonas Gray's coming out party.
20:16But he was quick to remove any Colts trying to ruin the celebration.
20:22He just finishes his block.
20:24Well, the touchdown signal was called.
20:26Drives him into the field and into the television truck.
20:30And I think Gronk, you see him flapping his fingers saying,
20:32that guy's been talking all game.
20:34You came off the field and we're doing this.
20:36He had been talking his whole game.
20:39Yes, he was japping to me the whole time.
20:42And that's why I took him and threw him out of the club.
20:44Out of the end zone.
20:45So, you know when that guy's japping?
20:46I was the bouncer.
20:47I picked him up, tossed him out of the club on that one touchdown.
20:50It was just so much trouble.
20:52Who is the type of guy to be a bouncer?
20:58Oh yeah, 42-20 in your own home stadium.
21:01Reminder, they complained about the Patriots cheating this,
21:05the Patriots cheating that.
21:07Cheating doesn't cause a blowout.
21:10Going on during that game and just so many emotions.
21:13So, I mean, I kind of had an opportunity on that one run play
21:16just to, you know, give it back.
21:19But, it's just part of the game of football.
21:23Gronkowski was penalized for the over-exuberant block.
21:27But he wasn't done manhandling the Colts.
21:30Out of the gun, his block motions, right left-hand backs up,
21:33throws for Gronkowski, makes the grab at the 20s,
21:35away from the defenders, tip arms another, carries a grab at the 15,
21:38to the 10, to the 5,
21:39Gronk leaps to the 0.
21:42Touchdown Patriots!
21:43Big smoke!
21:44Can't stop him!
21:46Cannot stop him!
21:53Time's a mess, and it's still like a little spin move.
21:56And then I was trying to get a guy off me,
21:58and then all of a sudden Julian came out of nowhere and popped.
22:00Watch the block at the tail end of this place.
22:03Adam's gonna get lit!
22:05That was Julian Edelman!
22:09I don't even know how I did it!
22:11I trooped like five people!
22:14How did you do it?
22:15I have no clue.
22:18Who man knows how I did it?
22:21I told AD he's gonna see something I've never done before in my life,
22:25this game, that I don't even know I did it.
22:28And AD goes, wow, you just did it!
22:30You know, he was fired up that game.
22:33It's fun to watch.
22:34It's fun to be around.
22:35You look at him and go,
22:38Gronk!
22:39And you just smile.
22:40Because he's just, he's a big kid out there having fun.
22:46New England went 4-1 during the most challenging portion of its schedule.
22:51Big time play by number 11.
22:53He's your ultimate patriot.
22:54Make it a play when your offense needs it.
23:00After the Kansas City loss,
23:02the Patriots went 10-2
23:03and averaged 32 points per game.
23:07The team that had been written off in September
23:10had earned the AFC's number one seed.
23:16It's hard to come in New England and play you.
23:21The Ravens scored the first 14 points of the game.
23:24The Patriots fought back.
23:27Only to see Baltimore.
23:29Yeah, there they go.
23:31There they go.
23:33They were the first team,
23:35really I believe,
23:41they were the first team to beat the Patriots
23:44in Massachusetts in a playoff game
23:46in 30 years.
23:49back in 09.
23:5130 plus years.
23:57And they had them beat there
23:59in 2012 again.
24:02And they had them beat here
24:04in 2014.
24:05They just didn't beat them.
24:11Take it second to touchdown lead.
24:14This amazing, stunned crowd at Gillette Stadium.
24:19Things could have gone awry
24:20had it not been for the reaffirmation
24:22of a familiar New England mantra.
24:25I thought one of the key moments in that game
24:27was when Coach Belichick told us.
24:29Look, fellas, it's just about doing our job.
24:32Just cover your man.
24:34Do what you're supposed to do.
24:37We're trying to make too many plays.
24:39We're not doing what we're supposed to do.
24:41You know, there was a calming sense
24:42at a time where it felt like it was slipping away.
24:45Once that happens, you just need some big plays.
24:48Hey, let's answer.
24:49Put him up there.
24:51New England got the spark from an innovative play call.
24:55Well, it was a trick play.
24:56Right there is Shane Vereen
24:58and he declared himself to be ineligible.
25:01Coverage-wise, it looked like the Ravens had to cover
25:04six guys on the field.
25:07We had six eligible receivers on the field,
25:09but only five were eligible.
25:10And the one who was ineligible reported that it was ineligible.
25:13Vereen, as he broke the huddle,
25:15talking to Vinovich and telling him
25:18that that guy right there is ineligible.
25:21But defensively, not very much time to react to that.
25:26Well, we put it in that week, you know.
25:28Some of those things were...
25:29I think we saw a college team do it.
25:31Guy's not even eligible right here, but he fakes a pass,
25:34and they free up the real tight end
25:37who was lined up as a tackle.
25:42You know, it worked.
25:43It made those guys a little boggled with what was going on.
25:48Have you ever seen that before?
25:49No.
25:51Nobody's ever seen that before.
25:52You guys are getting your money's worth with them formations.
25:56I don't need any lead time for the double pass, do I?
25:59I mean, I don't have to tell you it's coming, okay.
26:02Trailing by seven points in the fourth quarter,
26:05the Patriots continued their creative play calling.
26:08Edelman motions out with a quick throw for Julian setting up a screen.
26:11He's going to look to throw downfield.
26:13Amendola wide open.
26:16He's gone!
26:16Punchdown!
26:18Why?
26:22This is what we're doing.
26:24Danny Amendola?
26:26He's good, but like...
26:29Seriously?
26:31Patriots!
26:33Here.
26:44The funny thing is we...
26:49Ravens blew it and they have a...
26:51We practiced it in...
26:57The walk through the night before and...
27:05It's alright. It's alright. It's alright.
27:12I don't throw it as good as I used to.
27:14He throws it better than I did. He spun it as a...
27:24Get the momentum going for our...
27:28Squad.
27:29You know, luckily it all worked. So maybe...
27:33Maybe coach will let me throw it again.
27:36Probably.
27:38Alright, you got momentum. What are you gonna do with it?
27:40McCordy the single high safety...
27:42Four in New England.
27:43Clacko with a play fake.
27:46Second down in it. A lot of time.
27:47Rifles down the right side. McCordy picks it up!
27:50Why?
27:51Why?
27:53One of the plays on the first drive...
27:55I kind of knew it was coming.
27:57It was like two steps.
27:58Why?
28:00Too late to make a big play on it.
28:03And I knew as soon as that formation came up again...
28:07That, you know, if they would have threw the ball to anyone other than...
28:10Torrey Smith, it probably would have been a touchdown.
28:13Because there was no way I was gonna let them throw the same passing...
28:18Again.
28:19McCordy sees this so early.
28:21We read the...
28:22The eyes of Joe Flacco perfectly...
28:27Watching the film the next day in the defensive meeting room...
28:31We saw the camera shaking.
28:33You know, it got...
28:34So loud and crazy in the stadium...
28:37That we knew like...
28:39This is it now.
28:40We gotta really take advantage and go out here and...
28:42Win this game.
28:44Hey!
28:45I'm telling you, get ready...
28:48Your time could come right now...
28:50Out!
28:51The Ravens lead by three in this AFC Divisional Playoff.
29:06The Ravens lead by three in this AFC Divisional Playoff.
29:20Are you kidding me, man?
29:22The Patriots try to play their way to February.
29:25How long to go September seems now to win.
29:28England lost to Kansas City in week 4, 41-14.
29:32The Pats have since risen from the ashes and soared...
29:37To the top seed in the AFC.
29:39Two weeks from this evening, they hope...
29:41To be at University of Phoenix Stadium...
29:44Against...
29:45The Seattle Seahawks.
29:48One more!
29:48All we...
29:49We gotta do is give it all we got!
29:51Every single play we're in!
29:53I'll give you a shot...
29:57No.
29:57But...
29:57Since...
30:00Brady turns, gives it the block.
30:01Wraps!
30:05Thread ahead, LeGuard, Trinning Owl.
30:07Touchdown, Patriots!
30:10And...
30:16Daniels called a play that relies
30:21on a Patriots collegiate talents.
30:24Quick throw to a
30:33That's an offensive lineman.
30:40Unanswered points.
30:46They had the AFC championship in hand, but the ultimate prize was still at arm's length.
31:11And be in a whole different situation the next time that confetti falls.
31:18The job wasn't done yet.
31:25We had one more to do and we had a tough opponent.
31:33We were playing the defending world champs.
31:50I'm telling you right now, it's only good if you win it.
31:53AFC championships are fun, but AFC championship rings suck.
32:03Yep.
32:05You never want to be known as a conference.
32:09That's the backhanded compliment.
32:13But a brewing controversy tempered the excitement.
32:18The Super Bowl less than two weeks away in the New England Patriots were at the center of a controversy
32:24heading into that big game.
32:27Did the team bend the rules in Sunday's blowout victory over the Colts?
32:33Would you care to weigh in on that?
32:36I think I heard it all at this point.
32:38So, oh god.
32:40That's the last.
32:41That's my worry.
32:42That's, yeah.
32:43Yeah, I heard about it this morning.
32:45And, uh, um, obviously whatever you need to do to cooperate with them, we'll do.
32:50And even as we come closer to the Super Bowl, yes, they're still fielding plenty of questions
32:55regarding deflated footballs.
32:57You feel under fire to the team from all angles, right?
33:01Are you excited?
33:01No, you know, more worried about Seattle and what, uh, Seattle does on defense.
33:07I don't think anybody in this locker room really cares.
33:09If it's not about beating Seattle, uh, we don't hear it.
33:15It doesn't matter to us.
33:15It was easy, I felt, for Coach Belichick to come in there and get the team focused on
33:22only playing in the Super Bowl.
33:24So while everyone else was talking about, you know, everything else going on in the public,
33:29all the other nonsense, inside our building, it was straight Seattle.
33:35Yup.
33:36The Seahawks and the Patriots were star-studded teams.
33:40However, both knew that it would take 53 men to bring home the Lombardi Trophy.
33:53You know, in that pregame, I'm just speaking from the heart.
33:57And, uh, for some reason, as I'm talking, I just lock eyes with Malcolm and, you know,
34:04him not even being a big part of that game plan.
34:07But this is why we all came here this year!
34:11This is why you made us through!
34:12And I can see how excited he was in the game.
34:17And just slap him on the chest and tell him this is why you're here.
34:20The Patriots dominated time of possession in the first quarter, controlling the ball for 11 minutes.
34:28But the game...
34:34Where on earth was Tom Brady trying to throw?
34:37The game remained scoreless.
34:39It was kind of one of those things where it was a microcosm of the season.
34:43Our coaches came into this thing like, hey, it's going to be a battle to the end.
34:49You know, there's going to be times in the game where something wrong is going to happen.
34:55You just have to...
35:08Take the lead.
35:09I just had a feeling Brady was going to go to me that pass.
35:12It was man...
35:13it was indeed a monster...
35:19It was a touchdown, Patriots!
35:28A line back!
35:30The 100's run on a 6-pound transfer
35:33All Might Beal!
35:38Hey! Hey! That's a big score!
35:42The offense exited the minute situation to perfection.
35:46But former Patriots head coach Pete Carroll
35:49deployed a secret weapon to help the Seahawks tie the game before intermission.
35:55Chris Matthews! We're watching a star be born!
35:59How many catches do you have in a regular season?
36:01El Silcho.
36:03We're usually the team that goes down and...
36:05Next, it's that situation that way,
36:09and then you see another team that's coached well, that has great players,
36:13go out and do it on you, and you're like, man, that is awful.
36:18Only 15 minutes remained in the 2014 season,
36:23and the Patriots trailed by two scores.
36:26It kind of went right back to the Baltimore game and the divisional round,
36:30where, I don't know if he knew it, Coach Belichick comes over,
36:34and he says, just do your job.
36:37There's no mystery here, fellas.
36:39It's trusting each other and everybody doing their job.
36:43I think it just refocused us, and, you know, we just made plays after that.
36:48New England's coaches answered Pete Carroll's secret weapon with one of their own,
36:53inserting rookie Malcolm Butler into the defensive backfield.
37:05But the critical chess move came a few plays later.
37:10You know, it was like, all right, put Malcolm in on Matthews,
37:13and then, you know, myself, Revis, and Browner look at each other and we're like,
37:18why don't we put Browner on Matthews?
37:19He's 6'4", he's tall, too.
37:23Knocked away, incomplete, by Brandon Browner.
37:26That's the matchup, great adjustment.
37:28That's the way we got to play.
37:30One more, two more series like that.
37:32That's how we got to play.
37:35Tom Brady's touchdown pass to Danny Amendola cut the deficit to three points.
37:40Dig deep.
37:41Dig deep, boys.
37:43Hey, we need a big championship drive.
37:45That's what we need.
37:47Come on.
37:48Come on.
37:48Come on.
37:48Come on.
37:49Come on.
37:49Come on.
37:49Come on.
37:52Throws for Brock.
37:53Makes the grab on the far side of the 20.
37:54He's got a first down as he's forced out about.
38:00And a last-minute addition to the game plan with a chance to take the lead.
38:05Top looks left.
38:06Throws for Edelman.
38:08Touchdown, Patriots.
38:09They're back in the lead.
38:11It's Super Bowl 49.
38:13We put that play in the night before the game.
38:16You know, they were a zoned team,
38:17and just in case they were going to play some more man down there,
38:20we were able to fortunately hit it and take the lead.
38:24That was a big-time play, Jules.
38:27Championship play.
38:28They don't mean none unless we win it.
38:29Let's go.
38:30We are going to win it.
38:31Three, three.
38:38New England led by four points.
38:41One final defensive stop.
38:43And the 2014 Patriots would be the champions.
38:47Shot gets after the quarterback.
38:49Fires down the right side.
38:51He's got Kersh.
38:51And the ball is knocked incomplete.
38:53Good play again by Malcolm Butler.
38:55And the Kersh.
38:56You know.
38:58Had they lost.
39:00Had they lost, people would have blamed Malcolm Butler
39:03when he was making plays the entire game.
39:07But had they lost.
39:10On the carob.
39:12Unreal.
39:13A catch by Kersh on the carob.
39:15The ball knocked away by Butler.
39:23Not this again.
39:26You know.
39:27The Giants.
39:29The helmet catch.
39:31Then the sideline.
39:37Now this catch.
39:41Amazing.
39:42This is David Tyree all over again.
39:46From the eye formation.
39:48Lynch.
39:49The tailback.
39:50Wilson gives it to Lynch.
39:52Marshawn Lynch running left side.
39:53Skates down at the one.
39:54A goal to go.
39:55The clock's still moving.
39:56No one called a timeout.
39:57So now I felt like Seattle's players were sitting there.
40:01And we were sitting there like.
40:04What exactly are we about to do?
40:06And you know.
40:07I remember just seeing all the coaches on the sideline.
40:10Like this.
40:11For a goal line heavy.
40:12Three corners.
40:13Three corners.
40:14Three corners.
40:16Three.
40:17Malcolm go.
40:19And just the three corners.
40:21And big guys come running in the game.
40:24Second down and goal from the one.
40:26Clock's still moving.
40:27Down to 36.
40:30Defense.
40:31Maybe get a full.
40:32Maybe get.
40:33You know.
40:34I don't know if they're going to throw it.
40:36Are they going to throw it?
40:37No.
40:37They're not going to throw it.
40:38They'll get a fumble.
40:40Russell Wilson.
40:41Stets the hands.
40:42He has it.
40:43Wilson quick throw.
40:43And it's still.
40:44It's over.
40:45He is in the defensive line.
41:01They stacked the receivers.
41:03In that week of practice, I believe Coach did that on Malcolm a couple times.
41:07Josh Boyce scored on him.
41:10I think that was the one thing Malcolm kept from the whole practice week,
41:14was that I gave up a touchdown on a route that was talked about in meetings.
41:18You know, sometimes it's that one play that needs to stick with you.
41:21I think he was just like, I know this.
41:24As soon as they snap the ball, I'm going,
41:26and I'm just believing in what happened to me in practice.
41:29Just an unbelievable turn with a rookie free agent out of West Alabama
41:35intercepting the ball on the goal line.
41:42I don't know why it happened this way that he goes out and wins the Super Bowl.
41:46So I think it's great because I hope I go down to history
41:48as the guy that gave him the greatest pregame speech.
41:52Malcolm!
41:53Are you kidding me?
41:57You know, without him, we wouldn't be Super Bowl champs.
42:00What did I tell you, young boy?
42:01I'll slide him up right here, Mike.
42:03Hey, guys, back up.
42:04Hey, hey, hey, right here.
42:06He took it to heart and taking in the coaching
42:09and going out and applying it in the game.
42:12And, you know, with that play, we became champs.
42:18We did it, Dad.
42:19We did it.
42:21I love you.
42:23I wouldn't be here without you.
42:25It wasn't just a win for me and my team.
42:29It was a win for me and my family.
42:31It's one of those things you dream about, and it came true.
42:36And we shared that moment, and it was mine and my family moment.
42:42That's one moment, you know, in life.
42:45If I could just keep reliving, it would just be so rewarding.
42:48You realize that no matter what happens in the rest of your football career, you know, at one point in
42:54time, you can say, you know, I was a Super Bowl champion.
42:57I felt the confetti, and I felt the confetti fall on me.
43:02Thanks for bringing me in this world.
43:04Thanks for doing this for me.
43:06You gave me the best year of my life.
43:07You know what?
43:08You guys went out there and won it.
43:10It's a player's game.
43:11I'd do anything for you, coach.
43:12It's a player's game.
43:12I'd do anything for you.
43:14That was a better team win I ever won.
43:16That was awesome.
43:17Unbelievable.
43:19Knowing what we've been through all year, all the highs, all the lows, just being able to take the experience
43:24of just knowing what everyone on the team gave for you, what I was giving for my teammates, and just
43:30being able to celebrate them after the win.
43:31We are all Patriots, and tonight, once again, the Patriots are world champions.
43:39It was an unbelievable game.
43:42Like I could say.
43:54Look.
43:57Hey, uh.
43:59They can thank Pete Carroll for that one.
44:01I'm just saying.
44:32Yeah.
44:56Hey.
45:00Hey.
45:01Hey.
