AI may create new genres of games, but don't expect it to replace high-budget AAA gaming, says Xbox CEO Asha Sharma.

At Fortune Brainstorm Tech, Sharma argued that AI is more likely to transform game development and create new forms of content than replace the complex systems that power gaming today.

“I don't necessarily see world models being the replacement for 50 to 80 hours of gameplay in a really complex universe,” she said.

00:00AI has always been part of gaming, right? The GPU wasn't invented for researchers to train neural
00:06nets. It was invented for, you know, better spaceships and dragons and better frame rates.
00:11And so in many ways, I think that gaming will continue to lead the way on a lot of this
00:17technology. Look, coming from the AI world before this, I, a bit of a different point of view,
00:24I don't believe world models will replace AAA games. I believe that AI can certainly invent a
00:30new genre of games, but they're just going to be different. If you think about GitHub Copilot or
00:35Codex or Cloud Code, you can maybe single shot a vampire survivor game because the parameters are
00:40pretty defined and understood. When it comes to economies and matchmaking and social dynamics,
00:45this is a systems problem, not a content problem. In my first hundred days, I've really come to
00:50appreciate the depth and the complexity of art. And so I think AI will be really important in
00:56production pipelines and prototyping and things like that. I think it will be really important for
01:00new forms of content that come up, but I don't necessarily see world models being the replacement
01:06for 50 to 80 hours of gameplay in a really complex universe that gets created in AAA.
