Airbnb’s new house rules policy, which takes effect on Nov. 20, has been met with pushback from hosts with some threatening to leave the platform or raise fees.

Hosts cannot make guests “complete tasks that require significant effort or time, or would typically be performed by a cleaner.” The change targets one of guests’ most persistent complaints about the platform: paying a cleaning fee and being handed a chore list anyway.

00:00Airbnb is changing its rules on checkout chores, and some hosts are threatening to boycott the
00:05app over it. Under the company's new rules, visitors are no longer required to do time-consuming
00:10chores or tasks handled by a cleaner. CEO Brian Chesky has previously acknowledged growing
00:16frustration over checkout tasks on top of cleaning fees, and has now written up a policy with
00:22enforcement. Hosts now choose from seven standard house rules. Simple requests like leaving the
00:28dishes in the sink or gathering used towels are still allowed, but hosts must disclose all rules
00:33and requests beforehand, and they cannot impose their own fines on guests. The new rules received
00:39quick backlash, and a petition urging the company to reverse the restriction has reached over 20,000
00:45signatures. Some hosts are threatening to leave the platform, remove kitchen access, or raise prices.
00:51The change comes as Airbnb reports strong business growth, with second quarter revenue up 17% to
00:573.6 billion dollars, and the company now counts more than 5 million hosts and 2.5 billion guest
01:04arrivals all time.
