00:04There was over a hundred paparazzis following Britney, trying to find her.
00:10I pulled up to her gas station, and lo and behold, there's Britney.
00:15She had her wig off, and she was bald, so I went up to her door.
00:20You doing okay? I'm concerned about you, though.
00:22Britney was very upset and pissed off.
00:25And then at the very end, Allie, her cousin, says, guys, please don't. This is not good.
00:32No, guys, please, please, guys, don't do this.
00:42It's Britney, bitch.
00:49This picture is really hard to look at.
00:51What has she lost?
00:52She's lost her sanity.
00:55We bring it out!
00:57Her family put her into a form of jail.
01:00The level of abuse, we had been really deep.
01:02I told the whole world, I'm okay, and I'm happy.
01:05It's a lie, because I've been in denial.
01:07I've been in shock.
01:08I am traumatized.
01:22She was so naive, so innocent.
01:31I think she looks nervous, scared, like she's doing something that she doesn't want to be doing.
01:40They just looked me in the eye, and they said, are you a pedophile?
01:44I can't look down like there's no one around.
01:47I've had my own personal concert with Britney, so I just won't forget that.
01:52The cameras will flash, and I'll wear your dirty dance, so they keep watching her.
01:58We're looking down as she's lying in bed.
02:01So, immediately, that puts the viewer into the position of the lover.
02:11She's our Britney doll, like a Barbie, to play with.
02:15And we get frustrated with her when she demonstrates free will.
02:20I bet you did see this one coming.
02:24The incredible logo.
02:27The legendary Miss Britney Spears.
02:49Oh, the last time I was here was in January 1999.
02:56I was working for People magazine when I photographed Britney for first home take that was ever done.
03:03Nobody knew Britney Spears then, because her album was coming out that next week.
03:10Lisa Means was the first photographer to be given access to the Spears family home.
03:15Just before the release of Britney's first album, Baby One More Time.
03:21Kenwood is very rural.
03:23Very typical small town, Louisiana.
03:27There's a saying that there's a church on every corner in the south, and here's a Baptist church she went
03:34to.
03:35We kind of bonded over the fact that I grew up in the Baptist church as well.
03:46Britney graduated from the church choir to become a child star on TV in Disney's Mickey Mouse Club,
03:53alongside Justin Timberlake,
03:55I would love to you, baby,
03:58Ryan Gosling,
03:59Your mom is so strict.
04:01That's nothing.
04:02Excuse me.
04:03What's Hanky Panky?
04:04And Christina Aguilera.
04:07Before signing with Jive Records in 1997, when she was just 15.
04:16Back then, though, the little town of Kentwood was still home.
04:22We're going toward Britney's house that she grew up in, which wasn't anything fancy.
04:29Not like what she probably lives in now.
04:35A lot of photographers push the limits, and maybe they get an outstanding shot,
04:41but I want to treat people with respect and that courtesy,
04:45and I think that's why they were so welcoming and warming.
05:00This is the image that actually started the story for Britney and People magazine.
05:08Britney's standing on top of her brother,
05:10and he just laid there, and she said,
05:12Yeah, I'm really strong.
05:13So she flexed her muscles.
05:15It was really quite a special moment.
05:19She would tell me how she would sing all over the house when she was younger,
05:24and she was pursuing a dream that a lot of little girls have.
05:33So this is quite a sweet photograph,
05:36and it's giving you a sense of her background.
05:39So we've got this sense of her being from, you know, a fairly normal family.
05:44And all of these brown tones suggest that the family's drawing from this
05:47rather than 1970s aesthetic.
05:50And she appears to be completely unstyled in it.
05:53So she's wearing trousers, which don't fit her particularly well,
05:57so they're looking all kind of rumpled.
05:58It's really wholesome.
06:01She's got this slight boyishness to her.
06:04There's this idea that she's got this closeness to her family.
06:07She very much seems like an everyday, small-town girl.
06:13Jenny Elisku is a music journalist who interviewed Britney from the beginning of her career
06:18and grew close to the young star.
06:23I think that Britney having a girl-next-door image is a huge part of what kicked things off early
06:30on,
06:31and truly her authentic self is shining through.
06:34And she has always been, in all of my encounters with her,
06:37just the sweetest, most down-to-earth person.
06:41Britney's mum, Lynn, and her little sister, Jamie Lynn, were also photographed by Lisa.
06:48Here's another image.
06:49It was never published in People, but I really enjoy it.
06:54Britney and younger sister, Jamie Lynn, I think she was about seven when this was taken.
07:00They said, can we jump on the trampoline?
07:02And I was like, yes, that would be perfect.
07:07The family was very warm, very generous,
07:10very excited about the opportunity to share part of their lives and be a part of it.
07:16The photo shoot was a turning point for the family,
07:20who had heavily invested in Britney's singing and dancing lessons,
07:24even when money was tight.
07:26During this early era of Britney's career,
07:29her mom was the one who took her to all the stuff
07:32and was almost a manager, like what we call a stage mom.
07:35She was there to help Britney live her dream of becoming a performer.
07:42This also didn't get published.
07:44It's not one that's ever been seen by anyone.
07:47They wanted to go get some ice cream, so we went to the local drive-in place.
07:51I was smooshed in the back of the truck to get the images,
07:55so it was kind of challenging, too.
07:57But Jason is driving, a childhood friend, and Courtney,
08:01I think this is her cousin here.
08:02And we just had so much fun.
08:05They were singing to Madonna, and Britney was like,
08:08I hope I get to meet her one day.
08:10And we were all like, oh, that would be really cool.
08:16She was so naive, so innocent.
08:19And I don't mean naive in a bad way.
08:21I mean it in a really good way.
08:24Didn't understand what was about ready to come,
08:27and I don't think I did either.
08:29Nobody knew if this album was going to hit like it did.
08:38You get up in the morning and think,
08:39I'm living the dream of every young schoolgirl,
08:41and I've got a number one album and single.
08:42Yeah, I'm completely overwhelmed.
08:44I get to travel and see the world.
08:46I knew I loved the song, but I didn't know everyone else would.
08:49A week after Lisa's shoot,
08:51Britney's first album, Baby One More Time, was released.
08:54It catapulted the 17-year-old to global stardom,
08:58selling over 10 million copies in its first year.
09:02But it was the music video,
09:04made by British pop promo director Nigel Dick,
09:08that turned Britney into a star overnight.
09:14I'm now locked in with,
09:17oh, you're the guy that did that Britney video.
09:21Here she is, the biggest news thing in American music.
09:24Britney Spears.
09:26The first idea that I came up with was rejected.
09:29That something wasn't right.
09:32But the people at the label had spoken with Britney,
09:35and she had an idea,
09:37could I get on a phone call with her?
09:40Oh, baby, baby.
09:41She said, I want to be dancing in a school
09:45with some cute boys.
09:47And that was the brief.
09:49Oh, baby, baby,
09:51How was I supposed to know
09:56That something wasn't right.
10:05The teenage Britney dictated not only the location for the shoot,
10:09but also the most controversial image of the video.
10:14From my instruction,
10:16the wardrobe lady brought in a bunch of tracksuit bottoms
10:20and T-shirts and sweatshirts and whatnot.
10:23And so we put this on Britney,
10:24and she said,
10:25well, wouldn't I be wearing a school uniform?
10:27And I'm like,
10:28I just don't think this is a good idea,
10:32because certain people are going to get a certain perception about this.
10:35Show me how you want it to be
10:39And my producer was a woman,
10:42and the label representative was also a woman,
10:46and they both said,
10:47oh, I think that's a great idea.
10:48And I was overruled.
10:52Britney embodied the American dream
10:54and knew how to appeal to teens everywhere.
10:58How was I supposed to know
11:01Kevin Wu is a lifelong Britney superfan
11:04who was instantly hooked on the video.
11:07They played this every morning on MTV
11:10at like 6 in the morning.
11:12So I could watch this and go to my boring high school,
11:16fantasizing that this was what high school was actually like,
11:19which was exactly what she intended.
11:23I really admire the fact that as a teenager,
11:26she took creative control.
11:28And this was what sold me on Britney Spears.
11:33Wearing school uniform in this video,
11:35she's not being like the little girl.
11:37She's being the very empowered girl
11:39that is very much the legacy
11:41of what's been going on earlier in the 1990s.
11:46There was this incredibly important transformation
11:48in the image of girlhood.
11:51And it was really driven by Riot Girl,
11:54which was feminist punk rock music,
11:58and also picked up by the Spice Girls
12:00calling for girl power.
12:01Tell you what I want, what I really, really want.
12:04Don't tell me what you want, what you really, really want.
12:06Standing up to this kind of idea
12:08of women as sex objects
12:10and very vocal about the power of the girl.
12:14And I think the styling of this video
12:17is, I'm sure, in her mind,
12:19absolutely speaking to her generation.
12:22What was really striking in the moment
12:24when this came out
12:25was that immediately it was very, very sexualized.
12:27She was leched over.
12:33There was a review which said,
12:35Britney is an artist conceived
12:37by oily old men in raincoats.
12:41And I was at dinner with somebody that I know.
12:44They just looked me in the eye and they said,
12:46are you a pedophile?
12:48Hit me, baby, one more time.
12:52Everyone figured out,
12:54oh, part of what is gaining traction here
12:58is this uncomfortable desire that is around her.
13:04And so much of what's happened to her
13:06has been because of this thing
13:08that we projected onto her from the very beginning
13:12that we won't let go of.
13:19Britney's schoolgirl image opened the floodgates
13:22for the media to speculate
13:23about the 17-year-old's sex life.
13:26Am I a virgin?
13:29A businessman made her an indecent proposal.
13:32$12 million if he could become her first lover.
13:36A bookmaker in Wales is offering 25 to 1 odds
13:39that Britney Spears gets pregnant next year.
13:44Just eight weeks after the album launch
13:46and the first photo shoot with Lisa Means,
13:49the celebrity photographer David LaChapelle
13:52arrived in Kentwood
13:53for a Rolling Stone magazine feature titled
13:56Inside the Heart and Bedroom of a Teen Dream.
14:03When we shot together,
14:05I said, we're shooting for Rolling Stone,
14:06which has an older readership.
14:07I said, let's do something for them.
14:10Let's do something a little bit more provocative.
14:11And she was up for that.
14:12I mean, it's coming from her.
14:13But we knew what we were doing
14:14when we did this photograph.
14:15We knew they were going to cause
14:16a little bit of a ruckus.
14:17We didn't quite know it was going to be
14:18that big of a ruckus.
14:2317-year-old Britney played the role
14:25LaChapelle suggested.
14:27She was Lolita,
14:29the girl who attracts adult desire.
14:33Ken Johnson in The New York Times
14:34seizes on your manipulative cynicism.
14:37When you tell Britney to frolic with a Teletubbies.
14:40Yeah.
14:41Yeah.
14:46Yep, there it is.
14:48Britney's first Rolling Stone cover.
14:55LaChapelle did his LaChapelle thing.
15:00Afterward, her mom Lynn describes a cover photo
15:03as though it was taken in Britney's bedroom.
15:07With some outrage and regret
15:09that she let the photographer and Britney
15:11go into her room with the door closed
15:13to do some photos that were inappropriate.
15:21However, this photograph was taken in the living room.
15:25And I know this because I interviewed Britney
15:27about this specific photo
15:29as well as interviewing David LaChapelle about it.
15:32And they both described the same thing,
15:33which is that this was in the living room
15:35and that he had fashioned a ladder
15:37so that he could get up above
15:38and laid down this blanket on the floor
15:42and had the Teletubby at the ready.
15:44And you can tell looking at it,
15:45she's laying on the floor.
15:47You know, that seems clear once you see it.
15:49Was Lynn there in the living room for this photo?
15:52We don't know.
15:53But as the person who was always the stage mom,
15:57if anyone could have stopped it,
15:58it could have been her.
16:03For starters, in no universe is this a teenage girl's bed.
16:06She's there on a set of pink satin sheets,
16:10which do not look like they've been slept in.
16:13She's got a lot of makeup on.
16:15She's got this incredibly impeccable airbrushed skin.
16:19She's got this hair that looks quite disturbing.
16:21And in fact, it looks like plastic hair.
16:24It's very interesting that although she's being styled
16:28in this very grown-up way,
16:30she's also very much there with a kind of childish doll.
16:33So she is being shown to be childlike,
16:37to have that cute aspect to her,
16:38at the same time that she's also being shown
16:41as sexually available.
16:43For me, this is an image that's located
16:45in the world of soft porn.
16:48We're looking down at Brittany as she's lying in bed.
16:52So immediately that puts the viewer
16:54into the position of the lover.
16:57She's looking directly into your eyes
16:59and you're in a moment of intimate relation with her
17:01because her body's very close to you
17:03and it's very exposed and it's very vulnerable.
17:06And it very much puts it into the tradition
17:08of women who are presented as nudes
17:12for enjoyment by an assumed male audience.
17:19But then there's also this sense
17:21that she's been so manipulated
17:24that she looks like she's a doll.
17:26And indeed, she's a doll lying still box-fresh
17:30inside the satin of its presentation box.
17:33The doll is available to be played with,
17:35to be manipulated.
17:37She becomes this emblem for other people
17:41to project their fantasies onto.
17:45David LaChapelle is famous
17:46for his sensuous, intimate photographs of celebrities.
17:54Images that speak to the trust
17:56that his subjects have in him.
18:01LaChapelle's photography,
18:02I associate with being hyper everything.
18:06So everything's very, very brightly coloured,
18:09very shiny, very sexed up.
18:11And a world of high artifice and high camp as well.
18:14So there is an extent to which
18:15he's basically co-opting Brittany for his world,
18:18so she's slid into his aesthetic here.
18:21This photograph isn't really about her as a person.
18:24She's conforming to his vision here.
18:34She's kind of not the girl next door anymore, you know.
18:38To me, it looks like she's doing what they want
18:40in that respect.
18:42But she looks a lot older
18:43if this was just a few months after the one I took.
18:47But I was glad I got to see the innocence.
18:57LaChapelle created the defining image of her
18:59as a provocative child woman,
19:01and Brittany's music videos continued to tease and titillate.
19:08She's pop's most perky performer,
19:10more popular for her skimpy outfits
19:11than her poptastic tunes.
19:15Seriously, I'm from the South.
19:16We would go outside and wash cars in our sports bras.
19:18It's like hot there, you know.
19:20It's not something that it's like, ooh.
19:23But as Brittany's image veered from innocent to sexualised,
19:27it became increasingly hard for her
19:29to retain control over how she was represented.
19:38These are from the Brittany shoot,
19:40which I did in 2000
19:42for her record company
19:45when she was just about breaking big.
19:49Nigel Parry has made a career
19:51of photographing global celebrities,
19:53from David Beckham to Lady Gaga.
19:56The images that he took of Brittany
19:58were snapped up,
19:59selling around the world.
20:03She was just a lovely young girl
20:06shooting to stardom and fame.
20:08She was very down to earth.
20:10She had that innocence about her,
20:12which some may say
20:14was taken advantage of in the end.
20:26I do like the composition on this one.
20:29It'll have been my idea
20:31for her to wear the black and white
20:34because I love huge contrasts.
20:36And I will often tell people
20:39to open a button,
20:40fix something in their pocket
20:42to make them not feel like a statue.
20:45But I had no idea
20:46what was going to be done
20:47to the white jacket later on.
20:52Right, well, this is GQ magazine.
20:55Around here, as you can see,
20:57they've undone the buttons.
20:59They were closed up to here
21:00and then enhanced certain things
21:02about her body.
21:04In other words,
21:05they've given her a big cleavage
21:06and a big set of boobs.
21:07And it's really quite different
21:09from the actual image.
21:16Dylan Jones was the editor
21:18of GQ magazine
21:19when Nigel's image
21:20was used for a cover story
21:22and, Nigel says,
21:24was photoshopped
21:25without his consent.
21:28So this is the June 2000 issue
21:31of GQ with Britney on the cover.
21:34But I think she was
21:35a very one-dimensional pop star.
21:38The headline is
21:39Thank Heaven for Little Girls.
21:41I think probably
21:42she was given more cleavage.
21:45Even then,
21:46it was slightly distasteful,
21:47but that's what Britney was selling.
21:49That was the point of Britney.
21:50That was the package.
21:53Oh, my God,
21:54that's just creepy.
21:57That's so gross.
22:00It makes her look like
22:02she's got absolutely huge breasts.
22:05That she's undoing her shirt
22:07in order to show to the camera.
22:12It's so revolting
22:13and such an appalling manipulation.
22:18It really speaks
22:19to the culture of the moment.
22:20I would say
22:21this is like a dark era for women.
22:25I'm fairly certain
22:27we would have cleared that
22:28with Britney's management.
22:30Certainly my recollection
22:31is that everything was done
22:33with everyone's approval.
22:37I was sad to see
22:39that they'd done it
22:40and then even more sad
22:41to hear the phone calls
22:43from her agent
22:44and from the record company
22:47who were livid
22:48and assumed that I'd done that.
22:52And I hadn't.
22:56I think at the time
22:57everybody needed a bigger cleavage.
22:59That was the time.
23:01You're going to get me cancelled.
23:02All you people look at me
23:05like I'm a little girl
23:06What did you ever think
23:08it'd be okay
23:09for me to step into this world
23:10No matter who was really
23:12in control of her image
23:13Britney seemed unstoppable.
23:16She was by now
23:17setting records
23:18as the fastest selling
23:19female artist
23:20in America
23:24and she hit peak Britney
23:26on the 28th of August 2003
23:28as her childhood dreams
23:30came true.
23:31Everybody comes to Hollywood
23:34And she shared a stage
23:36with her idol
23:37Madonna
23:37at the MTV Video Music Awards.
23:49The VMAs have always been known
23:52to pull a stunt.
23:55It's where Beyonce announced
23:57her pregnancy
23:57that's where Lady Gaga
23:59wore the meat dress
24:00Like I remember
24:01the first time
24:02I went to the VMAs
24:03I was excited to be there
24:05because I knew
24:05something crazy
24:06was going to happen.
24:10Britney has said
24:11she went into it
24:13wanting to one-up herself
24:15and the attention
24:16she had gotten
24:16for previous performances.
24:21Famously, of course
24:22Britney had this history
24:23of the yellow snake
24:242001.
24:29So now we have Madonna
24:30and we have Britney Spears
24:34We have Christina Aguilera
24:35her two protégés almost
24:37a little bit of that
24:38you know what I mean?
24:39And you have this big moment
24:41in the conclusion
24:46you have this kiss
24:48that nobody was expecting.
25:00Who could forget this?
25:03The famous VMAs kiss
25:06between Britney and Madonna
25:10the mommy pop star
25:11passing the energy
25:12to the baby pop star
25:14is how Madonna
25:15described it
25:16to her daughter.
25:19Britney was obsessed
25:21with Madonna
25:21she idolized Madonna
25:23so she felt
25:24100% in on it
25:25no regrets.
25:30I love it.
25:32You know
25:32as a queer person
25:33I found this
25:35to be very revolutionary.
25:36It kind of normalized it
25:38it kind of
25:39it was almost
25:41political.
25:42Her same-sex kisses
25:44has tongues wagging
25:45coast to coast.
25:46What do you make of that?
25:47It's disrespectful
25:48and personally
25:49I don't too much
25:50care for this type of stuff.
25:52The iconography
25:53of Britney
25:54is this push and pull
25:56between innocence
25:58and naughtiness
25:59and this belief
26:01that she is sweet
26:03and down to earth
26:03with this need
26:05to have her
26:06be in trouble
26:07with us
26:07for something.
26:08Britney
26:08wave this way!
26:10She's never not
26:12been getting
26:13in trouble with us
26:14for something
26:15or another.
26:16When the then
26:17governor of Maryland's
26:19wife said
26:19she wanted to kill
26:20Britney
26:20because of her
26:21sexualized image
26:23Britney saw
26:24the funny side.
26:25She's
26:25oh
26:26I think I've heard this
26:27what did she say?
26:28That she wanted
26:29to kill you
26:30but at
26:31I feel sorry for her
26:33you know seriously
26:33she probably needs
26:34to get laid.
26:35She's old.
26:40I mean in a way
26:41one of the oddest
26:42things about this
26:43photograph is that
26:44Madonna is kissing
26:45someone who's dressed
26:46as her younger self.
26:48Like a virgin
26:49Hey
26:51Just for the very first time
26:54And there is almost
26:56a sense in which
26:57she's drawing
26:58the power of youth
26:59onto her side
27:00so there is that
27:01slightly kind of
27:02vampiric extraction
27:04of fame
27:06and currency
27:07and attention
27:09that's happening
27:09and also of narcissism
27:11as well.
27:19In hindsight
27:21it's
27:21Madonna
27:23smartly
27:24dipping in and out
27:24of the zeitgeist
27:25and kind of
27:26Britney's gone
27:26because that's
27:28all Britney had
27:29she was just
27:30relentlessly
27:31pushing this
27:32button of
27:33I'm young
27:34but I'm sexy
27:35You could look
27:36at this picture
27:37in 20 years time
27:38and people will be
27:39going
27:39who's that person
27:40with Madonna?
27:43That's what I think
27:44of that picture.
27:52By the early 2000s
27:55the media landscape
27:56had evolved
28:00Cheap digital cameras
28:02now meant
28:02celebrities could be
28:04followed round the clock
28:05by paparazzi
28:06Britney
28:07Look who Britney
28:07I don't know
28:09a big mile
28:09Britney
28:10whose fame
28:11was at its height
28:12was hunted down
28:13as celebrity magazines
28:14and websites
28:15began to offer millions
28:17for exclusive pictures
28:22She became
28:24their most lucrative target
28:25in LA
28:35During that time
28:36there was a huge growth
28:38in celebrity lifestyle
28:40type of magazines
28:42A lot of the British
28:43photographers
28:43could see that
28:44and got themselves
28:45a US visa
28:46and moved out here
28:48Photographer Nick Stern
28:49joined them in LA
28:50and was hired
28:52to follow Britney
28:58When I first came out here
28:59a lot of the
29:00paparazzi photographers
29:01were previously
29:03taxi drivers
29:04or construction workers
29:09They saw
29:10a way to make money
29:11and sometimes
29:12a lot of money
29:13very quickly
29:18This is Ventura Boulevard
29:20generally returned
29:21towards the valley
29:22and a lot of Britneys
29:24running around
29:24was done
29:25in this part of town
29:26Hey Snoop
29:27open the door
29:28You would have had
29:29as many as
29:3030 or 40 cars
29:32absolutely causing
29:33mayhem here
29:34at this junction
29:37The driving
29:38was downright illegal
29:40I saw cars driving
29:41on the wrong side
29:42of the street
29:42jumping red lights
29:45Accidents were regular
29:48One car might be there
29:50with a sole purpose
29:51of trying to block
29:52other photographers
29:56so that their agency
29:57guys could get
29:58the exclusive pictures
30:06There was cars attack
30:07with baseball bats
30:09There was tires slashed
30:10There was windows broken
30:12It was pretty dog-eat-dog bed
30:18When you have this type
30:20of celebrity
30:21to where you can't
30:22just even do
30:23the most mundane things
30:24like you can't go
30:24to a grocery store
30:25like it is incredibly lonely
30:28Here, here, Brittany
30:29This way, Brittany
30:30Look out, guys
30:30That's what I said
30:31That's what I said
30:32That's what I said
30:32That's what I said
30:32That's what I said
30:32That's what I said
30:33That's what I said
30:33Because the moment you slip
30:35they will tear you down
30:37When do you want to get married?
30:39To hire a photographer?
30:42Paparazzi attention became feverish
30:44when she began dating
30:45one of her backing dancers
30:46Kevin Federline
30:48They're out of the way
30:49They're out of the way
30:49Excuse me
30:50They're out of the way
30:51Within months
30:52they'd married
30:52And by 2005
30:54Brittany's image
30:55had been transformed
30:56from sexually available
30:57pop princess
30:58to wife
30:59and mother
31:00Did you happen to see
31:02that photo of Brittany Spears
31:04taking her baby son's life
31:05in her hands
31:06When she fled from paparazzi
31:08with her baby on her lap
31:10she was officially cast
31:12in her new role
31:13of bad mum
31:17Brittany was being followed
31:19by photographers
31:19in New York in 2006
31:22when she stumbled
31:23for a second in the street
31:29The image was used
31:31as more proof
31:32by the media
31:32that she was an unfit mother
31:37Brittany retreated
31:38to a cafe
31:38to try and hide
31:39with her son
31:58This picture is really hard
31:59to look at
32:02It instantly
32:03I just
32:04I barely saw it
32:05and I knew what it was
32:05It's
32:07It's a photo of Brittany
32:08and her firstborn baby
32:10I believe that's Preston
32:13Leanne Simmons
32:13was nine years old
32:15when she first saw Brittany
32:16in concert
32:18This was
32:18I think
32:19when it really started
32:20to get
32:22really dark
32:22the way that
32:23the public
32:24was treating Brittany
32:25and she's not only
32:27being photographed
32:27by photographers outside
32:29in the street
32:30but people inside
32:31of this restaurant
32:32To see a young mom
32:34with a baby
32:36seeking solace
32:37in a diner
32:38and just
32:39she's so emotional
32:40in it
32:40that that's what brings me
32:41to tears
32:42because
32:43I can only imagine
32:44what she felt like
32:45in that moment
32:45and how alone she felt
32:48this is a really
32:51horrible photo
32:52on many many levels
32:54we can see her face
32:55is looking
32:56really upset
32:57and she's looking
32:59disheveled
33:00so this
33:01100%
33:02you can tell
33:03just by looking at it
33:04is a photograph
33:04that was taken
33:05without her consent
33:08so the great
33:09image that we have
33:10of the mother and child
33:11that's come down to us
33:12throughout history
33:13is the Madonna and child
33:14and of course
33:15it presents a completely
33:16impossible ideal
33:19young
33:20virginal
33:21devoted
33:21self-sacrificing
33:22and in reality
33:24motherhood
33:25doesn't look like that
33:26it doesn't feel like that
33:27and what we
33:29seldom see
33:31certainly in art history
33:32is the mother
33:34that's not flourishing
33:35the mother that's
33:36having a bad time
33:37so it's only really
33:38as you start to come
33:39into the 1960s
33:41and 70s
33:42is that you
33:42get images
33:44of what
33:44the real experience
33:46of motherhood
33:46is like
33:47where you're
33:48really
33:49you know
33:49juggling between
33:50your love for the child
33:52but also you're feeling
33:53that you're unable
33:53to cope
33:59Brittany was labelled
34:01not just as an unfit mother
34:02but increasingly
34:03as white trash
34:05look it
34:06Brittany
34:07that whole picture
34:08of her
34:08is giving you
34:09a new definition
34:10of what not to wear
34:11Brittany makes trailer
34:12parks look trashy
34:15I want to give
34:15this woman a hug
34:16it's a tough one
34:17to look at
34:18unfortunately
34:19in our society
34:20and our culture
34:22it's easy to
34:24to vilify a mother
34:27especially
34:27with Brittany
34:28being the worldwide
34:29phenomenon that she was
34:30I think she was
34:31unfairly held
34:32to a much higher standard
34:33than the average person
34:34would have been
34:35but you really do see
34:36the love
34:38that she has
34:39for her son
34:45Brittany's image
34:46was being relentlessly
34:47exploited by paparazzi
34:49but their information
34:51often came
34:52from those
34:52who were closest
34:53to her
34:56you know
34:57we would get
34:58information
34:58and they would tell us
35:00hey
35:01Brittany's gonna be here
35:02at this time
35:03at this place
35:04so we were always
35:05getting tips
35:06please stop it
35:08leave me alive
35:10and Jamie
35:11Brittany's dad
35:12would give out
35:13some information
35:14to us
35:15and tell us
35:16where Brittany's
35:17gonna be at
35:19Daniel Ramos
35:21was a videographer
35:22working for the
35:23X-17 agency
35:24and filming Brittany
35:25in 2007
35:27the year that her
35:28relationship with
35:29Kevin Federline
35:30was collapsing
35:31and a custody battle
35:33was beginning
35:33for their two children
35:37and increasingly
35:39Brittany's own
35:39relationship
35:40with these photographers
35:41had become complicated
35:46there were times
35:48where she would
35:49invite us
35:50to her home
35:54but she would
35:55only allow one car
35:56and all the paparazzis
35:57would have to
35:58jump in one car
35:59and leave
36:00all the camera gear
36:01and their phones
36:03in the trunk
36:03she eventually
36:05started dating
36:06a paparazzo guy
36:07so to us
36:08I didn't know
36:09whether she was
36:10coming or going
36:11you know
36:12it was just very confusing
36:14are you guys dating
36:15or what
36:15as Brittany began
36:16dating paparazzo
36:18Adnan Ghalib
36:19there were rumours
36:20that she might have
36:21fallen pregnant again
36:22who's your newborn
36:24that was all the buzz
36:25is she pregnant
36:26isn't she pregnant
36:27people trying to get
36:28a picture of any
36:29kind of bump
36:29that she may or may not have
36:31and I saw these magazines
36:32and they said I was pregnant
36:34and like it's so true
36:36like America
36:37believe everything you read
36:39because like
36:40you're smart
36:41and I'm stupid
36:41and then Brittany
36:43was out and about
36:43one day
36:44and a photographer
36:45had gotten his camera
36:46with a short lens
36:47and did what they called
36:49an upskirt shot
36:50he'd gotten his camera
36:51pointed up a skirt
36:52like that
36:52and there was blood
36:54from her period
36:55on her underwear
36:56the agency sold that
36:58picture with the
36:59caption
36:59Brittany is not pregnant
37:01period
37:03and I just thought
37:04that was
37:04absolutely disgraceful
37:05disgraceful
37:11but also
37:12I could see
37:13that Brittany
37:14was experiencing
37:15some form of
37:16mental breakdown
37:18she looked like
37:19a very frightened
37:20very injured
37:21animal
37:22get off the street
37:24you're breaking the law
37:24get off the street
37:25you get up
37:26I emailed the agent
37:27saying
37:27please do not put me
37:29on team Brittany again
37:31and I quit
37:35within a few months
37:37speculation about her
37:38mental health
37:39had reached fever pitch
37:40when Brittany popped into
37:42an LA hair salon
37:43and reached for the Clippers
37:49so whether shaving her head
37:50is a form of liberation
37:51or really just a meltdown
37:53it's clear that Brittany
37:54Spears is displaying
37:55some pretty strange behavior
37:57how concerned should we be
37:58for her poor kids
37:59I mean she has two babies
38:00this is a very serious
38:01situation
38:02you have someone
38:03desperately ill
38:03and who could even be
38:05in a dangerous situation
38:09in 2007
38:10that infamous night
38:11of the umbrella attack
38:12she had came out
38:14of rehab
38:15and a lot of things
38:16were happening
38:17in Brittany's life
38:18there was over
38:19a hundred paparazzis
38:20trying to find her
38:22but a lot of people
38:23didn't know about
38:24Brittany Spears' cousin
38:26Allie
38:27that was driving
38:28a white Mercedes
38:30so when Roberto
38:31of X17
38:32spotted that white Mercedes
38:34he called me
38:36right away
38:37and said
38:38Dano
38:38you need to come
38:39help me out
38:40I need your video
38:41because he does photos
38:44that's big money
38:45especially at that time
38:46when she shaved her hair
38:47and she was wearing
38:49a pink wig
38:54when I followed her
38:56Roberto said
38:57we're going to a gas station
38:58and I pulled up
38:59right at the same time
39:00that Allie went inside
39:02to the store
39:03and lo and behold
39:04there's Brittany
39:05and she took off
39:06she had her wig off
39:07the pink wig
39:08and she was bald
39:09How are you doing?
39:11You doing okay?
39:12I'm concerned about you though
39:13okay
39:15Roberto's taking pictures
39:16because that was
39:17the money shot
39:18was to get her
39:19without the wig
39:21Brittany's cousin
39:22gets back in the car
39:23and they go to
39:24Kevin Featherline's house
39:26where her two kids
39:27are at
39:27and Brittany
39:28has been wanting
39:29to see her kids
39:30for a while
39:31and Kevin
39:32was not having it
39:33and was not going
39:34to let her in
39:38we kept on following
39:39and then at the very end
39:41that's where she stops
39:42at the Jiffy Lube
39:43this oil change place
39:45Brittany was very upset
39:47and pissed off
39:48so I went up
39:49to her door
39:50please guys
39:51Allie her cousin
39:52says guys please don't
39:54this is not good
39:55please guys don't do this
39:56no no no
39:58that's where Brittany
39:59grabbed the umbrella
40:00from the back of her car
40:01and she was hitting
40:02my truck
40:15this is actually
40:16the photo
40:17that Roberto took
40:18and she was really
40:19trying to break
40:20the windshield
40:21and this is actually
40:23the umbrella
40:24that Brittany
40:25left behind
40:28once she saw
40:29the flashes
40:29going off
40:30of Roberto's camera
40:31she just
40:33swung the
40:34the umbrella
40:34and hit him
40:38when she knew
40:39she hit him
40:40she dropped
40:41the umbrella
40:41and ran back
40:42to the car
40:43waiting for her
40:45oh
40:47that's where
40:48she got you
40:48an umbrella
40:49when I look
40:50at this photo
40:51right now
40:52and I've
40:52been looking at it
40:54throughout the years
40:55now
40:55I mean I feel bad
40:57I really do feel
40:58bad since here
40:58and I
40:59she gave me an apology
41:00for hitting my truck
41:02with the umbrella
41:02and hitting Roberto
41:03but I'm sorry
41:05to her too as well
41:06for not leaving
41:08there alone
41:11Brittany was now
41:12mocked
41:12and humiliated
41:13on national television
41:15even on the popular
41:16game show
41:17Family Feud
41:18name something
41:19Brittany Spears
41:20has lost
41:21in the past year
41:22the hair
41:24there it is
41:25she's lost
41:26her sanity
41:27her underwear
41:28her hair
41:34her mind
41:34her marriage
41:35there you have it
41:36all right
41:38this is really
41:39a moment
41:39where she's
41:40said in a very
41:41public way
41:42I'm not going
41:42to conform
41:43to the image
41:44of me
41:44that you've
41:44created
41:45anymore
41:47and we associate
41:48the shaved head
41:49in women
41:50particularly
41:50with punk
41:51and with this idea
41:52that you're not
41:53going to conform
41:53to you know
41:56stereotypical femininity
41:57and sexual availability
41:59and at the moment
42:00with Brittany
42:00where she's really
42:01trying to no longer
42:02perform as a kind
42:03of sexy doll
42:04anymore
42:04to remove that
42:06projection
42:06that then opens
42:07her up to
42:08oh well then
42:09she must be
42:09a crazy woman
42:11this really is her
42:12saying no I don't
42:13want to play
42:16anymore
42:17I would say
42:18this is one
42:19of the most
42:19misunderstood
42:20photos
42:22of Brittany
42:23Meg Radford
42:25has been a fan
42:25of Brittany's
42:26since childhood
42:28I think
42:29this
42:30was one
42:31of the first
42:32moments
42:33of Brittany
42:33rebelling
42:35from the machine
42:36because she
42:38was saying
42:39you can't
42:39prop me up
42:40if I'm not
42:41pretty
42:41I don't
42:43understand
42:44how so
42:46many people
42:46didn't see
42:47that this
42:48was a woman
42:49who was having
42:50a hard time
42:51who needed
42:52support
42:52and who
42:53we collectively
42:55made it much
42:56worse for
42:57because of the way
42:58that we treated her
42:58Brittany Spears
43:00has done it again
43:00early Thursday night
43:02police were called
43:02to Spears
43:03Los Angeles home
43:04because Brittany
43:05would not turn over
43:05her two sons
43:06to ex-husband
43:07Kay Fed
43:08it ended with
43:09a hysterical
43:10Spears
43:10taken to LA's
43:11Cedars-Sinai
43:12Medical Center
43:13for a mental
43:14evaluation
43:14because she could
43:16be a danger
43:16to herself
43:17and others
43:19in the years
43:21leading up
43:21to this time
43:22a lot of
43:23people saw
43:24Brittany
43:24publicly
43:25behaving in
43:26ways that
43:26were cause
43:27for concern
43:29the reason
43:30they took her
43:30here instead
43:31of Cedars-Sinai
43:32where she was
43:32last taken
43:33is reportedly
43:34because her
43:35psychiatrist
43:35is treating
43:36her for
43:36bipolar disorder
43:38by the time
43:39the second
43:39hospitalization
43:40happened
43:41the wheels
43:42had already
43:43been set
43:43in motion
43:44by her
43:44family
43:45to get
43:46this kind
43:47of legal
43:47guardianship
43:48over her
43:49Brittany's
43:50family has
43:50been working
43:51to get her
43:51under psychiatric
43:52care
43:53this was
43:53carefully
43:54orchestrated
43:54I think
43:55by that point
43:56the toothpaste
43:57was out of
43:57the tube
43:58in terms of
43:59everyone seeing
44:00her as
44:01a mess
44:01and out
44:03of control
44:03and that
44:05has been
44:06the narrative
44:06that has
44:07haunted her
44:07ever since
44:13Brittany's
44:14family pushed
44:14through a
44:15legal arrangement
44:16known as
44:16a conservatorship
44:17which gave
44:19her father
44:20Jamie
44:20unprecedented
44:21control
44:22of her
44:23finances
44:23personal life
44:25and career
44:26her parents
44:32had a kind
44:33of a turbulent
44:33relationship
44:34during her
44:34childhood
44:35Jamie
44:36her dad
44:36is an
44:37alcoholic
44:37and so
44:38there was
44:40a lot
44:40of chaos
44:42and a lot
44:44of bullying
44:47Brittany was
44:48blocked
44:48from hiring
44:49her own
44:49lawyers
44:50because she
44:51was deemed
44:51to be
44:51mentally
44:52incapable
44:52of making
44:53that choice
44:56Jenny
44:57Alisku
44:57met her
44:58in secret
44:58in a hotel
44:59bathroom
45:00to try
45:00and help
45:01in January
45:022009
45:05I knew
45:06that she
45:06was scared
45:07of her
45:07father
45:08that she
45:09didn't want
45:09him to be
45:09the one
45:10in charge
45:10of her
45:11I agreed
45:13to meet
45:14up with her
45:15so that she
45:15could sign
45:16legal paperwork
45:18saying
45:18I want
45:19to choose
45:20my lawyer
45:20and I've
45:21chosen this
45:22person
45:22it was
45:23very sort
45:24of high
45:25intrigue
45:26espionage
45:27type feeling
45:27situation
45:28paperwork
45:29was submitted
45:30and her
45:31team
45:32claimed
45:32it was
45:33a forgery
45:34it was
45:35you know
45:36pretty
45:36devastating
45:41for a decade
45:42from 2008
45:43to 2018
45:44Brittany
45:45seemed to
45:46conform
45:53she was
45:54glossy
45:55and polished
45:55again
45:56every performance
45:57perfectly
45:58choreographed
45:58as she
45:59earned
45:59millions
46:01but as she
46:03performed her
46:03piece of me
46:04residency
46:05in Vegas
46:05some felt
46:06her lyrics
46:07sent a message
46:11and you seem
46:12in a really
46:12good place
46:13right now
46:13would that
46:13be a
46:14safe thing
46:15to say
46:15yes sir
46:15okay so
46:16you're pretty
46:16happy
46:17that's good
46:17to know
46:18you know
46:19you have
46:19millions of
46:20fans around
46:20the world
46:21I know
46:21you know
46:21that
46:21but I hope
46:22you know
46:22that they
46:23feel
46:25love to you
46:26they feel
46:26protective of you
46:27I feel
46:27for them
46:31but in
46:322018
46:32she finally
46:34rebelled
46:34in public
46:35when she
46:36was on
46:36stage
46:36in Las
46:37Vegas
46:39oh
46:39the infamous
46:41Britney Spears
46:43Vegas residency
46:43announcement
46:44yep
46:45I was there
46:46I was hosting
46:48this
46:54probably
46:54one of the
46:55most
46:56confusing
46:57unorganized
46:58nights
46:59of my career
47:00she had just
47:02finished
47:02piece of me
47:03residency
47:04which was
47:04absolutely
47:05ultra successful
47:06and if Britney
47:07said that there
47:07was going to be
47:08an announcement
47:09in Vegas
47:09with a whole new
47:10residency
47:11so then that's
47:11when I was
47:12asked to cover it
47:13hello world
47:15we are live
47:16in Las Vegas
47:17for an announcement
47:18that you are not
47:19ready for
47:20everybody
47:20yes
47:23this event
47:24this event
47:25I was so excited
47:26for
47:26I remember
47:26exactly where I was
47:27when I watched it
47:28because it was like
47:29live streaming on
47:29YouTube
47:30I did think it was
47:31weird
47:31I was like she just
47:33did a four year
47:34residency
47:35like why is she doing
47:36another one
47:37again
47:38but I was like
47:39well I guess
47:39she wants to
47:43the Britney fans
47:44have been there
47:45all day
47:47everybody's kind of
47:48just in the moment
47:49expecting something
47:50gag worthy
47:50y'all excited
47:53oh yeah baby
47:54now listen
47:55she's coming
47:56it's about to happen
47:57down in Las Vegas
48:06and she comes out
48:08she waves
48:10ladies and gentlemen
48:11Britney Spears
48:12she says hello
48:14to everybody
48:16pyrotechnics
48:17Britney domination
48:19everybody loves it
48:23here she comes
48:23she's coming down
48:24the stairs
48:26after this
48:26I think it was
48:27supposed to be
48:27like an interview
48:28like I was supposed
48:29to ask her a couple
48:29questions
48:30we were supposed to
48:30chat about
48:31the residency
48:32and if she was excited
48:39so this
48:40was the moment
48:42that I knew
48:43something was wrong
48:44because her body
48:46language was very
48:47off
48:48I think she looks
48:49nervous
48:50scared
48:51like she's doing
48:52something that she
48:53doesn't want to be
48:54doing
48:54she's being paraded
48:56around
48:56like
48:57she's
48:58not a real human
49:03she was just
49:04being directed
49:05on how to do
49:06everything
49:08I was like
49:09I don't think
49:10she wants to do
49:11this
49:11it doesn't feel
49:13like this is
49:14her choice
49:15you know what I mean
49:17next thing I know
49:18she says bye
49:24that's not what was
49:25supposed to happen
49:27there's no speech
49:30and you can tell
49:31that the handler's
49:32talking to her
49:33and there's
49:34clearly a moment
49:34where she's like
49:35I don't know more
49:40nobody knew what was
49:41happening
49:41and I remember
49:42a lot of the fans
49:43being like
49:44is she coming back
49:44asking me
49:45and I'm like
49:46honey I don't know
49:49look I'm looking
49:50trying to say
49:51is she coming back
49:52look do I talk now
49:53what's happening
49:55and then she literally
49:57just walked
49:58down a runway
49:59and got into a car
50:00and left
50:01and it was like
50:02very confusing
50:03and
50:05concerning
50:05and I was worried
50:07bye
50:09hey
50:10oof
50:12yeah
50:12that was a rough one
50:14that was a rough one
50:18this is rooted on
50:19reclaiming autonomy
50:21I'm done
50:23I have done this
50:24for many years
50:26I want my life back
50:29she felt like
50:30she never got to live
50:31or break
50:32you know
50:33we've seen that
50:34for many people
50:35it's happened to Mariah
50:36it's happened to Whitney
50:37and this goes back
50:38way
50:38like
50:39if we want to go
50:40way back in time
50:40talk about a Judy Garland
50:44in January 2019
50:46Britney's management
50:47officially announced
50:48the cancellation
50:49of the New Vegas residency
50:51and an indefinite
50:52work hiatus
50:55Britney had denied
50:56the conservatorship
50:57the use of her image
50:58or her voice
50:59and alleged in court
51:01that she was then
51:01forced to take lithium
51:03after she refused
51:04to continue working
51:07she said no
51:08to this
51:09and they put her
51:10into a facility
51:11to drug her
51:12against her will
51:12and so
51:13I don't know
51:14I just
51:14I think it's all
51:15really sick
51:16and this photo
51:16just makes me feel
51:17really sad
51:18for the little girl
51:20inside Britney
51:20who isn't getting
51:22to make her own decisions
51:23about her own life
51:25to find out later
51:26that they were using
51:28her kids
51:29to control her
51:30and that if she
51:32didn't do
51:33what they wanted
51:33that they would
51:34take away
51:35her access to them
51:36it's sick
51:46as word of Britney's
51:48refusal to continue
51:49performing spread
51:50the free Britney movement
51:52was galvanized
51:53a citizens army
51:55determined to challenge
51:56the conservatorship
51:57protests began in earnest
51:59in 2019
52:03your family
52:04puts you in this
52:05legally binding
52:07form of jail
52:08in a lot of ways
52:09it was just such a sham
52:10and a way to control her
52:11and her money
52:12and a way
52:13to make her
52:14as profitable
52:15as possible
52:16for them
52:18they controlled
52:19all of her finances
52:20so she got a weekly allowance
52:22I mean I just think
52:23it ran really deep
52:25the level of control
52:27and manipulation
52:28and abuse
52:28who's running
52:30this ship
52:30her brother Brian
52:32gave a rare
52:33and revealing interview
52:34on a podcast
52:35offering his view
52:37on the family dynamics
52:38behind the conservatorship
52:40the women in this family
52:41are very very
52:42strong minded
52:43and have their own opinion
52:45and they want to do
52:46what they want to do
52:46and as much as I admire that
52:49as a guy
52:49and being like
52:50one of two guys
52:51in this entire family
52:52it kind of sucks
52:54man
52:54I'm not gonna lie
52:57in 2021
52:58Brittany herself
52:59spoke to the Los Angeles court
53:01to try to end
53:02the conservatorship
53:04I told the whole world
53:05I'm okay
53:06and I'm happy
53:06it's a lie
53:08because I've been in denial
53:09I've been in shock
53:10I am traumatized
53:12my dad
53:12and anyone involved
53:13in this conservatorship
53:14and my management
53:15they should be in jail
53:18she spoke so clearly
53:20and eloquently
53:21it was like
53:22I was bawling
53:23listening to it
53:24I was just like
53:24what the heck
53:26and then
53:27November 12th 2021
53:29finally Brittany
53:30was freed
53:30from her conservatorship
53:32what's next
53:34for Brittany
53:34and this is the first time
53:36this could be said
53:37for about a decade
53:38is up to one person
53:40Brittany
53:55Meg, Kevin and Leanne
53:56were the organizers
53:58of the LA protests
53:59there were so many people
54:01I know
54:01just flooding the street
54:02we had this entire
54:03street shut down
54:12what a day
54:13oh my gosh
54:14I'm getting goosebumps
54:15because this was the time
54:17it finally happened
54:17people just cheering
54:19and hugging
54:19strangers hugging
54:20people crying
54:22so much crying
54:22there wasn't a stranger there
54:24because we were all there
54:25for the same reason
54:26it was a really magical day
54:27magical is the right word
54:28you can see all the confetti
54:30all the happy smiles
54:31that's so beautiful
54:36this image with the
54:37the figure of Brittany
54:38held aloft
54:39with this ecstatic crowd
54:41behind her
54:42immediately makes me think
54:43of images of
54:44Samana Santa
54:46the week of the saints
54:47religious devotees
54:50carrying aloft
54:51statues of saints
54:53in religious processions
54:55around Easter time
54:56this has very much
54:57got that quality
54:58of a kind of
54:59religious icon to it
55:04the success
55:05of the Free Brittany movement
55:06in galvanizing
55:08that public outcry
55:09so that
55:10the very same judge
55:12who'd been rubber stamping
55:12this for years
55:13finally stopped doing that
55:15I think all credit
55:16for that goes to
55:17Free Brittany
55:18I'm proud of them
55:19and
55:20I'm proud of Brittany
55:21for surviving
55:22I mean that's the biggest
55:23thing to be proud of
55:29the conservatorship
55:30ended in 2021
55:31and Brittany is
55:33free
55:34but she has retreated
55:36from the world
55:36and stopped performing live
55:41occasionally still making
55:42headlines for the wrong reasons
55:46but in the vacuum
55:47that's been left
55:48it's now the fans
55:50and not photographers
55:51who are creating
55:52their own images
55:53to honor their idol
55:57I think this was
55:58generated by AI
55:59I would imagine
56:01but you haven't seen it?
56:02No
56:02Oh, I'm on Twitter too much
56:10This is Rio
56:11where the place
56:12of Christ the Redeemer
56:14is the ginormous statue
56:15of Brittany Spears
56:17from the 2001 VMAs
56:19which is my favorite
56:20look of hers
56:21Me too
56:21Your tattoo
56:22Oh yeah
56:23I have a tattoo
56:24of that look
56:25I can moisturize it
56:26She's holding
56:27Banana the snake
56:29Love Banana
56:30He's still alive, right?
56:32Yeah
56:32Last I heard
56:33Yeah
56:36Your Banana the snake update
56:38He was still alive
56:44I mean it's kind of
56:45magnificent in a way
56:46because instead of
56:46having this very stern icon
56:49of Christ overlooking
56:50the city
56:51you've got Brittany
56:52in all her glory
56:54and I'm sure it's intended
56:55as a great celebration
56:57but it's also quite terrifying
56:59the idea of being
57:00this kind of
57:00you know
57:01the giant emblem
57:02on the hill
57:03that everybody looks up to
57:04how can anybody live up
57:05to that perfection
57:06and that level of scrutiny
57:09Celebrity becomes
57:10the kind of
57:11modern religion
57:11and we create
57:13these celebrity icons
57:15and then we project
57:17all of our needs
57:18and our desires
57:20and our hopes
57:21onto them
57:22The danger really
57:23is that
57:24as a celebrity
57:25who has all of that
57:27projected onto you
57:27you don't get to be yourself
57:29you can only be
57:30that kind of
57:33available vessel
57:34for other people's fantasies
57:38And I'm going to be
57:39so honest with you
57:40I think
57:42I think maybe
57:43what fans
57:44are struggling with
57:45is that
57:47yes they have
57:48freed Brittany
57:50but I think
57:50what they thought
57:51was going to happen
57:52is that she was still
57:53going to be the Brittany
57:54that they remembered
57:59And I don't think
58:00that is possible
58:01I think
58:02this Brittany
58:03is figuring out
58:05who she is
58:06without being
58:07a pop star
58:08and what that looks like
58:10And I think
58:10the reason why
58:11these AI images
58:12are created
58:13and why the fans
58:14do this
58:14is because
58:15they still want her
58:15to be what she used to be
58:17And that's just not how
58:19evolution
58:20or liberation works
58:48They don't think
58:51You
