00:25The New York Knicks are actually playing in four of the finals
00:28and they're getting blown out, they're not going to win this championship, but let's
00:34hear a championship that New York did win years earlier.
01:16If you're a late guy, if you're a half-assed guy, if you're not a full-speed effort guy,
01:21if you're an excuse guy, that doesn't sound like somebody whose priority it is to be
01:29the very best he can be.
01:30We had a coach who came in and was, at that point, a complete tyrant.
01:34We lost the game because of a legal procedure!
01:38Get your ass down!
01:41Basically, treated you like you were a child.
01:44You must have misunderstood me.
01:45Pull those pants down below those knees.
01:47We're not wearing Bermudas out here, we're wearing football pants.
01:50What are they, unblockable?
01:51Is that the 85 Bears over there?
01:53Huh?
01:54You want to feel like you're playing for somebody.
01:57You know, you want to run through a wall for a coach.
02:00You want him to do that firing brimstone speech.
02:03And for us, we didn't have that.
02:05We had a guy who just barked orders and fined you at the top of a hat.
02:09I'm in a hurry!
02:10Let's go!
02:11I got things to do!
02:13In Tom Coughlin's world, on time meant you were late.
02:18Yeah, let's go.
02:18What the heck?
02:19What time does this 3.20 practice start?
02:213.15, right?
02:22His rule is, if it says meeting at 3, be there at 2.55.
02:27I don't get it.
02:28If the meeting's at 2.55, say 2.55.
02:31Your meeting's at 7, so you come in about 10 up.
02:34I show up at 8.27 for an 8.30 meeting.
02:38The next day, I had a letter on my stool saying that I was 5.500 bucks.
02:43What?
02:47There was a price to pay playing for Tom Coughlin.
02:53And for quarterback Eli Manning, his first 3 seasons in New York were a tax in time.
02:58He looks, he starts to run.
03:00Oh!
03:01He's hit!
03:01Manning was nearly separated from his senses.
03:05And welcome to the NFL, Eli Manning.
03:08Like Coughlin, Manning came to New York in 2004.
03:12And from the beginning, everyone wanted to compare him to his older brother.
03:16It's also been reported, and obviously I couldn't believe it when I read it,
03:19was that you feel you have more natural talent than Peyton,
03:21and that's why Peyton has to study so much film, stay up till 2 in the morning.
03:24He doesn't have the same ability that you have.
03:26I think when it comes to athletic ability, I know I can beat him in basketball and ping-pong and
03:30tennis and other sports.
03:31I am a better athlete.
03:33And basketball is...
03:35Being a better athlete than Peyton Manning isn't really that hard.
03:40I mean, in his lower torso, neither of those guys can run.
03:48basketball is not even a question.
03:49That's easy.
03:50He still hasn't forgiven me for dunking on him the last time we played.
03:56Eli may have ruled on the basketball court, but in the court of public opinion, he was a poor imitation
04:01of his older brother.
04:02I'm not putting up your brother's toe tail!
04:04I wish I was Peyton!
04:07I wish I was Peyton!
04:09I wish I was Peyton!
04:11I wish I was Peyton!
04:13Fake handoff.
04:14Nanny was...
04:15Eli was adopted.
04:17He looks just like Archie when Archie was that age.
04:20But I know what they mean.
04:23It's a throw intercepted!
04:24The only success Eli enjoyed in the playoffs came as a fan.
04:28Never doubt, right?
04:29Never doubt, never doubt.
04:30When he celebrated with Peyton after the Colts won the 2006 AFC Championship.
04:37The league's most disciplined coach had an undisciplined team.
04:43Coughlin knew changes had to be made, or changes were going to be made.
04:47We have so many things to clean up, the penalties, all the sloppiness, which is not good football.
04:53At the end of the 06 season, literally every beat writer, every major newspaper in New York,
04:58every TV station in New York said get rid of this guy, get rid of Coughlin, get rid of the
05:05players,
05:05get rid of the quarterback, you know.
05:07Get rid of Coughlin.
05:08This man got an expansion team to the AFC Championship game twice.
05:15That's bogus, and you know it's bogus.
05:18You serious?
05:21Get rid of them all.
05:22I said, look, if this is going to be my last year, I'm going to have fun.
05:26Beautiful day, huh?
05:27Great day.
05:28Great day.
05:29God, Phil, I know you mean it even.
05:30Beautiful.
05:31I'm going to enjoy the players.
05:32Great day.
05:33It had been said to me by people in my inner circle, you need to let the players see you
05:38as you are with your family, with your grandchildren, with that kind of thing.
05:41Let them see that part of you.
05:43Because I had always been interested in firm, fair, honest, demanding.
05:47Firm, fair, honest, and demanding.
05:50That's the code I've always operated under.
05:52But now, I needed to slip the caring part in.
05:55How long has she been safe?
05:57A little while.
06:01But now, I was going to care about them more than the developmental part of it.
06:05I was going to show it to them.
06:06What's that tattoo you got?
06:10The 2007 training camp featured a kinder Coughlin.
06:13What's it say?
06:14In both his words and deeds.
06:16Strength in Tibet.
06:17It was a surprise.
06:18No one knew.
06:18We kind of all showed up for that meeting.
06:20He got up, talked about practice a little bit.
06:23Like, it was the same schedule.
06:24Like, we're about to go into meetings.
06:25He said, alright, everybody outside to the buses.
06:28We're getting out of here.
06:35I bowled really well.
06:37That's another sport I'm better than Peyton at all.
06:39So, if we want to get into that.
06:41You know, the guys are looking at me.
06:42Who's this guy, you know?
06:46Coach Coughlin is not a very good bowler.
06:48Obviously, he's not spending a lot of his free time bowling.
06:51Which is a good thing, I believe.
06:54I saw guys in a different light.
06:56Kareem McKenzie.
06:57Real good bowler.
06:58I said, wait a minute.
06:59Where's this guy coming?
07:00David Tyree had his own bowling ball.
07:02We said it on 07 Bowling Champions.
07:04Michael Jenner, David Tyree.
07:06When I heard that Coach Coughlin canceled training camp practice to take a team bowling,
07:10I was thinking, well, over all the years I missed training camp,
07:13now the guy wants to get soft and nice when I'm not there.
07:18I think we all know the real reason why he wasn't at camp.
07:20He just didn't want to be at camp.
07:21I didn't go to training camp because two reasons.
07:24One, I wasn't sure if I wanted to play.
07:27And two, if I did want to play, I didn't want to go to training camp.
07:33Electing to miss camp cost Michael Strahan $200,000 in fines.
07:39It was the best $200,000 I've ever spent.
07:42If they would have told me 10 years ago I could have paid $200,000 in missed camp,
07:46I would have paid about $2 million in fines right now.
07:50Strahan returned just prior to the season opener.
07:53Running back Tiki Barber did not.
07:56But the recently retired tailback was still running.
07:59This time, his mouth.
08:06And in his new job, Barber sacked his former quarterback.
08:10His personality hasn't been so that he can step up, make a strong statement,
08:15and have people believe that he's coming from his heart.
08:17He didn't feel like his voice was going to be strong enough.
08:20And it showed.
08:21I mean, sometimes it's almost comical.
08:23I'm not going to lose any sleep about Tiki has to say.
08:26You know, I guess I could have questioned his leadership skills last year
08:29with calling out the coach and having articles about him retiring in the middle of the season.
08:33He's lost a heart.
08:34When Eli stood up for himself, you can tell I'm smiling right now because it was as if the little
08:41boy had started to get a little whiskers on his chin.
08:46He's becoming a man.
08:47I guess I'm just happy for Tiki.
08:48He's making a smooth transition into the media world.
08:51So to see that lets you know, okay, he has some fight.
08:54He has some fight.
08:56And I think a lot of guys pulled behind him because they realized, hey, this guy has a little more
09:02to him than we thought.
09:07Despite having a quarterback with a newfound toughness and a coach who had discovered his softer side, the 2007 New
09:14York Giants hardly seemed like a team ready to make a run at a champ.
09:20It just looked like a team in repair, a team that was rebuilding.
09:25And I've been there before.
09:26And so I looked at it and said, do I really want to be a part of that?
09:30You know, that's a fiasco in itself right there.
09:33And in New York, they'll eat you alive if you're not successful.
09:40It's very hard to make a decision to come back to that because you just didn't see the upside of
09:45it at all.
09:47I laugh and I say what I want to say and I do what I want to do because I
09:51want to do it.
09:52Now that I came off the street, I can't be a better state than y'all.
09:59Despite Michael Strahan's fresh legs, New York's defense gave up six touchdowns to the Cowboys.
10:06Steps up into the end zone, touchdown win.
10:11Even worse, quarterback Eli Manning injured his throwing shoulder in the game's final minutes.
10:19Next day, I go into the doctor and he tells me, you know, I think you're going to be out
10:23a month.
10:24And I'm thinking, well, that's not that's not what I want to hear.
10:28And I kind of said, you know, Doc, I, you know, I never questioned your, your, your job and what
10:34you think.
10:34But Wednesday, I didn't practice.
10:37I threw a few balls.
10:39I could throw, you know, about a 10 yard pass, but it looked like a girl throwing.
10:43I mean, Eli throws like a girl anyway.
10:47Some may question Manning's arm, but after week two, no one could question his heart.
10:53He's tougher than we gave him credit for.
10:55This guy's supposed to be out for six weeks, eight weeks the entire season.
10:58He's playing the next week.
10:59And that definitely gave guys a different level of respect for him.
11:05A bum shoulder and a bad defense could not stop the Packers.
11:09After just two games, the Giants had given up a league high 80 points.
11:14The media started out with a, here we go again.
11:17You know, fire Coughlin, fire the quarterback, fire the players.
11:20Let's get rid of everybody.
11:21And we were 0-2.
11:23The Giants needed inspiration.
11:26Coach Tom Coughlin found it.
11:30Cut Peyton Manning's brother and Archie Manning's son
11:36and a number one draft pick who's taken you to the playoffs before.
11:41Are you serious?
11:43This is full season.
11:47You serious?
11:51Early in the week, Mike Sullivan comes to me, my receiver coach.
11:54And he says, Coach, I've got a good friend that I played at Army with.
11:58His name is Lieutenant Colonel Greg Gadsden, who was wounded in Iraq and lost both of his legs.
12:06Sorry to interrupt.
12:07Scratch that.
12:07He's taken you to the playoffs twice by 2007.
12:13You know, after visiting with Greg, I said, Greg, would you mind coming over and speaking to our team?
12:19Colonel Gadsden came and talked to the team about how he got injured and how he's laying there on the
12:24side of the road.
12:25And he just talked about how he had no doubt he was going to get through, that his guys were
12:29going to come for him and help him make it through there.
12:32When I was laying down and those guys were freaking doing all the things that I never believed that I
12:37would not live.
12:40And that's what we believe.
12:46In a wheelchair.
12:49And you're thinking to yourself, how can I say that I'm hurt or injured or tired or anything like that?
12:54How could I not have any fight in me?
12:57And if there was ever a chance to stand up and fight and show what we were made of on
13:01the road against the Redskins was a pretty good place to do it.
13:04And what better time than a fourth quarter goal line stand?
13:09For three plays, the Giants held firm.
13:13We had one play in order to win our first game.
13:16The Giants are pretty nice on the Redskins.
13:19Those shiny Jurgis in our uniforms.
13:21Pretty nice.
13:23Game, and although it's early in the season, this game is as important as any playoff game you'll ever be
13:28in.
13:29Fourth and goal at the one.
13:31Calling signals.
13:33Takes the snap.
13:34Hand off left from Batson.
13:35He's tripped up and snaps short.
13:36They're going to win the ball game.
13:38That goal line stand, in my opinion, was our season.
13:40That was the epitome of our season.
13:42Against all odds, against all circumstances where it looks like you don't have a shot, you succeed.
13:48One win turned into six straight.
13:53Manning the throw.
13:54Has time.
13:55Slings one left.
13:56Requires, who makes the catch!
13:57Over two defenders for a touchdown!
14:01The Giants also began a record-setting streak of road wins.
14:05Including their longest trip of the season.
14:07From week eight to London, England.
14:10I think at one point you looked at it as a burden.
14:14Thinking, man, we have to upset our schedule.
14:17Six hour time difference.
14:19But once you put it in your head, okay, we do have to...
14:22Came a fun trip.
14:24Old season said he's going to London so he can see the Eiffel Tower.
14:27Wow!
14:28Really?
14:29I bet she knows about London.
14:30You know I ain't been eating very much food over here, so I hope this hamburger is pretty good.
14:33Hey, mate!
14:34Hello!
14:37Hello!
14:37I thought he was going to get good food out of England.
14:44I went there last summer.
14:47Dog crap, most of it.
14:51Garbage.
14:53Hello, what's up?
14:55Yeah, that's Luke.
14:56Our guys were so positive about this.
14:59And they've taught me a lot about that.
15:01I'm telling you.
15:02Our bus ride out to where we practiced was an eternity.
15:05I thought we were going to Scotland, for God's sakes.
15:08We were on the bus so long.
15:09But the players were great about it.
15:12They were less enthusiastic about the grass at Wembley Stadium.
15:17That was the messiest, nastiest football field, or pitch, as they call it in London, we've ever played on.
15:24How's this field?
15:26Slippery.
15:28Not the kind of day to post career-high rushing numbers.
15:31But Eli Manning did exactly that.
15:35Manning's going to roll to his left.
15:36Manning's going to run to the five.
15:37Manning to the goal line.
15:38Touchdown, Eli Manning!
15:40A rushing touchdown for Eli.
15:43I did outrun Jason Taylor.
15:45He had the angle on me with my speed.
15:47I just beat him to the corner.
15:48I don't think he'll agree with that.
15:51I remember Eli down by the goal line, and Eli takes off running.
15:55And I saw Jason Taylor chasing it.
15:57And I was like, oh, he's about to get tackled.
15:59So I went back and grabbed a big thing of water, and I drank it, put it down.
16:05I grabbed another cup of water.
16:07I drank it, put it down.
16:09Then I turned back and walked back to the sideline.
16:11Eli got about two yards.
16:12And I was like, holy smoke, this ain't play still going on, huh?
16:18I almost got delayed during the play.
16:21My longest rushing touchdown I know of my NFL career, possibly of even a flag football career in fifth grade.
16:28I think that was definitely my longest run.
16:30We came to win a game.
16:31We won a game.
16:32Okay?
16:32We're 6-2.
16:34It wasn't pretty, but we're 6-2.
16:37And that's the key thing.
16:41Sunday, early enough where I can sit on the couch and direct TV and watch every game, that's Sunday.
16:47You know, I got the thing mastered.
16:49I can flip channels.
16:51I always watch Peyton's game.
16:52Here comes Peyton Manning.
16:54I'm just like any other fan.
16:55You know, I'm a fan of football.
16:56I love watching it.
16:58Manning was more effective with his remote control in his hand than with a football for much of the second
17:04half of the season.
17:07Takes the snap back to throw.
17:09Over the middle.
17:09And it's intercepted.
17:11Threw it right to the safety.
17:12New York's six-game winning streak came to an end against Dallas.
17:16Two weeks later, Manning tied a career high with four interceptions.
17:20And Manning throws over the middle and gets picked off again.
17:23And Manning throws his third pick-six of the game.
17:28Poorly thrown pass.
17:29You know, I just, I don't even remember that game.
17:32It's funny you say that.
17:32I just, that's been blocked out of the memory.
17:35Manning had another forgettable performance against Washington.
17:39In swirling wins, he threw 34 incomplete passes.
17:42The most in the game in 40 years.
17:45I'm trying to break a lot of records here.
17:47You know, I'm very proud of all my records.
17:50I've broken.
17:54Manning could be horrible for three quarters.
17:56Manning gets picked again.
17:58And brilliant in the fourth.
18:00His play was erratic.
18:03His demeanor?
18:04Unflammable.
18:06Maybe his...
18:07If you gave Peyton Manning three quarters.
18:10And then put Eli, switched in with Eli.
18:16Or you gave Peyton Manning...
18:21regular season.
18:22And then Eli in the post season.
18:24I'll give you a dynasty.
18:29His personality is perfect for New York.
18:32They always think you need to have that fire and brimstone and be able to come back at people to
18:36play in New York.
18:37But for Eli, it was as if...
18:39Oh shucks.
18:42They set us up.
18:44Okay.
18:45He just never let it bother him.
18:47The thing that you have to understand about Eli is...
18:50so much of what he feels he keeps inside.
18:53He's not going to share...
18:5318 of 53 passing.
19:00You know?
19:01I mean, Archie told me he can't get anything out of Eli.
19:03Usually a quarterback, you can look and you know, get an idea.
19:06Oh, he's feeling good today.
19:07He's going to have a good one a day.
19:09He's feeling confident.
19:10Where Eli just gives you this look like...
19:18Every day.
19:19So you don't know if the guy's feeling...
19:21played the worst game of his life.
19:23We come out here to bang your ass!
19:25Manning was tough to read.
19:44Mo Strahan was an open book.
19:46What you gonna do?
19:47I ain't gonna lie to you.
19:48I ain't got many options in life.
19:49This is what I was built for.
19:51I know I'm fine as a mother...
19:52But I was built to play football.
19:54That's what my mentality is!
19:56I can't even say that.
19:57Strahan began every Sunday with his Stomp You Out pep talk.
20:01I would get so excited in the middle of that huddle that I would just jump up and come down
20:06and stomp.
20:12Guys got excited over it.
20:17Guys need it. They want it.
20:19That was our rallying cry.
20:21It wasn't everyone's rallying cry.
20:24I've never stomped, you know, stomped anything.
20:30I don't do the jumps. That's really not my pregame ritual that gets me fired up.
20:37Even keel Eli and Stomp You Out Strahan for a stark contrast in personality.
20:46To the winners.
20:49This is the reason for our success right here. Say something, Coach.
20:53There's a reason for our success.
20:55The guys just like this. The coaches and the players.
20:57Absolutely.
20:58That's the reason.
20:59One, two points.
21:01Kuffman grew closer to his players.
21:06How about that?
21:08And his players grew accustomed.
21:09Never say die! Never say die!
21:12Our personality was the personality of a team that would give you a heart attack because we could not win
21:18easy.
21:19High drama.
21:20This will be a 57-yarder to tie the game and send it to overtime.
21:25Stick on its way. Does it have the distance?
21:27It is.
21:28No good!
21:28They hit the right upright.
21:30The New York Giants come from behind and beat the Eagles 16-13.
21:36We were not a team that went out for four quarters.
21:38Pretty good.
21:39Beat you down into the dirt and made you submit.
21:44And my heart can only take so much.
21:47Great heart. Great heart.
21:49You played your asses off.
21:51You never thought anything but win.
21:53You kept on playing and you got it done.
21:55There's all kinds of obstacles out there and you overcame every one of them.
22:03In Buffalo, in week 16, they overcame four turnovers and a 14-0 deficit to clinch a playoff berth.
22:12Bradshaw up the middle.
22:1325-30.
22:14It's a foot race.
22:15Bradshaw to the 40.
22:16To midfield.
22:16No one's going to get the rookie out of Marshall.
22:18Touchdown Ahmad Bradshaw.
22:20And the rookie may have brought the Giants into the postseason.
22:24Congratulations, Joe.
22:25Ten wins and in.
22:26That's a great job, man.
22:28Two good jobs.
22:29To rest or not to rest, that is the quandary facing Tom Coughlin's Giants.
22:33With nothing to be gained in the playoff standings, do they sit their starters or do they go for the
22:38big win against the Patriots?
22:39And the momentum that that would provide going into the playoffs.
22:43They're very talented.
22:44I think definitely straight hand should take the weekend off.
22:47I'd rest them.
22:48I know that.
22:49Coughlin, if you're listening, definitely rest those guys.
22:51You know, I do nothing but talk to our guys about winning.
22:55My team and start couching, well, if this happens and that happens, but if this doesn't happen, that doesn't work
23:03for me.
23:04I got a tough time with that.
23:05Oh, the Giants are in the playoffs.
23:07They ain't got nothing to play for.
23:09Rest their guys so they don't get hurt.
23:11These guys are in the playoffs too.
23:13Why ain't they got some other fans?
23:16I'm going to tell you right now.
23:19Well, I mean, I understand what you're saying.
23:24They're not resting their stars because they're trying to go undefeated.
23:28So, it's a one-in-a-lifetime, once-in-a-lifetime context.
23:39It's the perfect team.
23:41Eli Manning was nearly perfect, tying a career high with four touchdown passes.
23:47And the Patriots' perfect season is very much in jeopardy.
23:52His counterpart faced more pressure than normal.
23:57In the end, the Giants won Tom Brady's respect, but not the game.
24:04If they play like they play tonight, the New York Giants can make some hay in the NFC playoff.
24:09We played the Patriots.
24:11They were playing for a lot.
24:12For us, we were playing for nothing.
24:13The Giants already had Tom Brady's respect.
24:15They already had a lot of Patriots' respect and a lot of people's respect.
24:23But they proved to a lot of people, like, if they can hang with an undefeated team, they can hang
24:29with anybody.
24:33And you're on the sideline thinking, this is the best the league has to offer.
24:36They've beaten everybody.
24:37You name it, they've beaten them.
24:38We're this close?
24:40Imagine if we played and there's everything at that stake, how well we could do.
24:44We have the gauge on where we need to be if we ever see them again.
24:51We know that.
24:53What Manning had against Rondé Barber and the Bucs was a mistake-free performance.
25:01Manning back to throw.
25:02Pucks, looks, fires, right for two more in the end zone.
25:04Touchdown, Giants!
25:06Manning, 20-27, a buck 85, two touchdowns.
25:10Never put the ball in harm's way.
25:14After winning the first playoff game of the Tom Coughlin era, the Giants headed to Dallas.
25:19Where once again...
25:22Rondé Barber should have taken some notes from his brother on how to actually beat the Giants, if he was
25:32going to say all that.
25:34An opponent provided motivation.
25:37The morning of the game, it's brought to my attention that Jerry Jones had put two tickets to the NFC
25:43Championship game on each player, each Cowboy player's stool.
25:47Now, did I make a big deal about it?
25:49No.
25:49But did I know that it happened and did I make sure the players knew that that happened?
25:53Sure.
25:53They've already won this game.
25:55Why do we need to show up?
25:57Manning takes the snap.
25:59Back to throw.
26:00Swings one left.
26:01Wide open to him with the Cowboy 40.
26:04Sheds...
26:06Down the left sideline.
26:0725-20, 15-10-5.
26:10Touchdown, Ivani Tumor!
26:12And the Giants have drawn first block.
26:18The Giants finished the first half the same way they began it, with Manning leading a drive that would end
26:24with an Armani Tumor touchdown.
26:25Back looks over the middle for Tumor, makes the catch.
26:28Touchdown, Armani Tumor!
26:30So the Giants go 71 yards here in the final minute of the half.
26:38The whole second half, I had my spot on the bench, and whenever Dallas had the ball, I couldn't watch
26:43the game, you know, going live.
26:45I had to look at that left scoreboard.
26:47I like to say I'm not superstitious, but I am a little stitious, and I know that's not a real
26:52word, but that's just kind of my little saying.
26:54You know, the whole second half, I'm sitting on the bench, I'm looking up.
26:56That's when our defense is playing well.
26:58You know, we'd get, you know, we'd get big stoppage, we'd get a sack.
27:00Yeah, a sack!
27:01After a big play, if I saw, you know, incomplete, or I saw, you know, a sack, I'd stand up,
27:06I'd cheer, I'd get fired up.
27:07But before that next play, I had to get back on that bench.
27:09So that's where I was on that final play.
27:13So it's down to one play.
27:16A season is down to one play.
27:18Fourth and 11 at the Giants 23.
27:21They've got to go to the end zone!
27:2316 seconds to go.
27:25Giants leading by four.
27:26When Romo drops back, and you see him release the ball, I held my breath, and I just turned, and
27:32I looked, and I'm thinking, Lord, please, please, please don't let them score.
27:49I mean, I'm up there jumping up with a bad groin, and, you know, hitting him in the air, we're
27:53bumping in the air.
27:55Like, ah, you know, that's the best film in the world.
27:57I don't want anybody talking about this in the media.
27:59Jerry just sent the tickets over, so we're all set.
28:02I hope playing in New York prepared you, because you've got to go from Tampa, Durham, Dallas, to Green Bay.
28:20Game, second coldest game ever at Lambeau Field, minus one degree with a wind shield of minus 23.
28:26I go out pre-game.
28:28Now, I'm well-dressed in other areas, but I'm in a baseball cap.
28:31I was out there about one minute, and I thought, anybody that's got ears like these ears that I have
28:36ought to be covered up.
28:37You know what I mean?
28:38I thought they were going to break off.
28:40Two hours before, me, Plaxico, and Monty do our regular routine.
28:43We go out, we do our throwing, and we're usually out there for about 25 minutes.
28:48We can only stay out there seven minutes that day, back into the locker room.
28:52Eli Manning eventually returned to the field, a place the little stitious quarterback expected his fiancée to be for four
29:00quarters.
29:01Whenever she sat in a suite, we were one and six.
29:05That was our record.
29:06Whenever she sat in a suite at a football game, so I said, you know, Abby, I'm sorry to say
29:09this,
29:10but you're going to have to sit outside for this game.
29:12You know, I said, I'll get you all the warm clothes.
29:15I'll get you the works, but it's just, you know, you're going to have to do it.
29:18All you hear about is the pass, the pass, the pack of this, the pack of that,
29:22Brett Favre this, Brett Favre that.
29:24The pass is the f***ing pass.
29:26That pre-game speech was my favorite because we make our own history now.
29:31The pass is...
29:31The Packers won the Super Bowl more recently than you did, so...
29:39And the pass is the pass.
29:41The Packers won the Super Bowl.
29:43You were in the league.
29:45I don't get that.
29:48Dead.
29:50Now, cold is very temporary.
29:52This is temporary!
29:54The championship is permanent!
29:57The Giants did their best to ignore the Packers' history and the weather.
30:02No two players were hotter than Manning and Plexico Burris,
30:06who hardly practiced at all the entire season due to injuries.
30:09This guy, bum ankle, bum knee, bum whatever, in the playoff was a beast.
30:19An absolute beast.
30:20I've never seen anybody beat down defensive backs the way he did.
30:25Burris set a team postseason record with 11 catches against Green Bay,
30:29many of them coming against Pro Bowl corner Al Harris.
30:33Al Harris is one of the most physical and best cornerbacks in the league,
30:36but to watch Plexico abuse Al Harris the way that he did,
30:40that was a thing of beauty.
30:42Al Harris, he must be cold,
30:44because he's been undressed by Plexico Burris.
30:48Harris was exposed.
30:50So was Tom Coughlin's face.
30:52The first time I noticed Coach Coughlin's face was at halftime,
30:55and he's talking, and I could not,
30:57I didn't hear one word he said.
30:59I was just so concerned that his face had frostbite all over it.
31:03This man looked like he was a cherry.
31:09Coughlin grew redder in the face
31:11as he watched kicker Lawrence Tynes miss two late field goals.
31:15He could have won the game.
31:17Oh, what drama!
31:18And Lambeau Field in Green Bay!
31:21But in overtime,
31:23Tynes was given one more opportunity.
31:26That's a 47-yard field goal.
31:29And I'm looking for a sign.
31:31Does this guy really think,
31:32he runs on the field.
31:34Lawrence runs out there.
31:35I go field goal, not a headset.
31:37No, Coach, no, don't do,
31:39you know, we can't do this again, no!
31:41Believe it, we don't win this damn game!
31:43I'm just thinking, hey, this one's,
31:45he's got to make it this time, you know?
31:46I think it's, again,
31:47that same philosophy that,
31:49for whatever reason,
31:49we like to make things tough on ourself.
31:51We don't like winning the game in regulation
31:53on the short field goal.
31:55We like winning it in overtime
31:56on the 48-yard field goal.
31:58All right, here goes Tynes again
32:00to kick the Giants to the Super Bowl.
32:03Snap is good.
32:04Kick on its way.
32:05And over it,
32:05does it have the distance?
32:06It is good!
32:09Lawrence Tynes has kicked the Giants
32:11to the Super Bowl!
32:18Hey, E!
32:19I got icicles in my nose!
32:21Hey, let it go.
32:21Thank you, brother.
32:22Get it, man.
32:23Thank you, man.
32:23Let's go get it.
32:24We ain't finished.
32:25Thank you, man.
32:26I love you.
32:26Let me get you one.
32:27Let me get you one.
32:29I'm not walking down the street
32:30telling every guy that I love him,
32:32but I love Eli Manning.
32:33You know, he hung in there.
32:34He'd gone through so much
32:35that he deserved that moment, too.
32:37Manning hoped to share that moment
32:39with his fiancée.
32:41After the game I'm looking for,
32:42I go, I know where she is.
32:44She's down low somewhere.
32:45Row seven, you know, seat one,
32:47you know, she should be right there.
32:49And sure enough, you know,
32:50she was in the box the whole time.
32:52And she wimped out and sat in the box.
32:55And so she's happy
32:56because she ruined that jinx,
32:57so she thinks,
32:58so she can sit in a suite now.
33:07I mean, we're setting records
33:09in the National Football League
33:11for winning on the road.
33:12And everybody wants to know
33:14about this secret formula.
33:15Well, it's not really a secret formula.
33:17It really goes back to
33:18believing in yourself
33:19and this belief that we can win.
33:21One mindset
33:24to win the football game.
33:25What's your factor about?
33:27One mindset
33:28and one dress code.
33:30All black.
33:31We're going to a funeral.
33:33Either going to a funeral
33:35for the Giants
33:36or we're going to a funeral
33:37for the Patriots.
33:38I'm kind of looking at my wardrobes
33:40and I don't really have a black shirt.
33:42I said, y'all do it.
33:44I think it's great.
33:45But just so you know,
33:46I'm not wearing the black shirt.
33:48I just...
33:49Eli's like,
33:49I don't wear black shirts
33:50with a black tie.
33:52It's okay, Eli.
33:53You wear a freaking white shirt then, man.
33:55I was surprised Eli spoke up.
33:57Okay, getting a little more confident here.
34:00Confidence
34:00is what led receiver
34:02Plexico Burris
34:03to predict
34:03a 23-17 victory
34:05for the Giants.
34:08We're only going to score 17 points?
34:11Okay.
34:13Plexico's not giving us any credit
34:14for scoring 17 points.
34:18That, I think,
34:19resonated with us.
34:21That made us go,
34:23oh, okay.
34:24You're that confident?
34:25We'll see.
34:27The Giants were enjoying
34:28their time in the sun.
34:33Oh,
34:33that you can hook on
34:34to your button-up-down shirt
34:36so it doesn't get...
34:36Oh,
34:37the next one.
34:41Is there anything on him?
34:43I'm eating a greasy burger.
34:44I'm getting all on his shirt.
34:46Let's show how much
34:47this team has changed
34:50without the greasing down
34:51or killing an In-N-Out burger.
34:54He's the biggest game
34:54of his life
34:55and he's relaxed enough
34:55to sit out
34:56and eat a greasy
34:57In-N-Out burger.
34:59Some damn good burgers, too.
35:03Coughlin followed it up
35:04with a damn good
35:05pregame speak.
35:07I'll just give you
35:08a couple thoughts
35:09about my experience, okay?
35:11And really,
35:12what I'm saying to you is
35:14this is what I want from you.
35:16And I said,
35:16in 1990,
35:17when I was an assistant coach
35:19with the New York Giants
35:20in Super Bowl XXV
35:22and the field goal
35:23was wide right.
35:25No goal!
35:26And we all jumped
35:27to our feet
35:28with exhilaration.
35:29It's the greatest
35:31professional feeling
35:32in the world.
35:33The greatest satisfaction
35:35you ever have
35:36for one moment in time.
35:39We're sitting here
35:41Saturday night
35:42with one 60-minute game
35:45to play
35:46for a chance
35:47to become
35:49the world champion.
35:49And I said,
35:50that's what I want
35:51for you.
35:53The New York
35:54football Giants
35:55and the New England
35:56Patriots
35:56in Super Bowl XLII.
36:01Patriots 18-0.
36:02We know all about
36:03their credentials.
36:04How did the Giants
36:05pull off one of the
36:06major upsets
36:07in Super Bowl history?
36:11Michael Strahan
36:12and the Giants' defense
36:13had only one goal
36:14in mind.
36:15Coughlin abused
36:16Tom Brady.
36:18That's why they got
36:19that's why they won
36:20that Super Bowl.
36:22If we don't get
36:24the Tom Brady today,
36:25we will not win
36:27this game.
36:41I'm very offended
36:43and they're leaving him
36:44out there by stuff.
36:45See it in his face,
36:46he don't know what to do.
36:51Takes the snap
36:51and back to throw.
36:52Sets in the pocket
36:53and he's sacked
36:54by Michael Strahan
36:55back at the 32-yard line.
36:56Aside from opening
36:58scores by both teams,
37:00Super Bowl XLII
37:01was a three-quarter
37:02stalemate.
37:05Not a whole lot
37:06else happened.
37:07You know,
37:07if you're Tebow
37:08in the game,
37:08you just skip the rest
37:09and go to the fourth quarter.
37:12The fourth quarter.
37:1415 minutes stood
37:15between the Giants
37:16and the Lombardi Trophy.
37:20I thought,
37:21you know,
37:21this time,
37:21let's put him out there.
37:23When he's in the game,
37:24they're usually thinking
37:24run.
37:25I kind of did a point
37:25at the safety,
37:26kind of eyeing him,
37:27you know,
37:27like he's going to block him.
37:29We had play action
37:30off the run
37:31and sure enough,
37:32just hit him
37:32in the back
37:33of the end zone.
37:35Touchdown!
37:35David Tyree
37:36on the post
37:37and the Giants
37:38have the lead
37:38for the 11th
37:39of the game.
37:42The play worked
37:43just as the Giants
37:44had practiced it
37:45two days earlier.
37:48But that day
37:49was the only catch
37:51Tyree actually made.
37:53David Tyree
37:53had the worst practice
37:55in the history
37:56of practices
37:57at any level.
37:58I've never seen
37:59anything like it.
38:01They were hitting
38:01off his chest,
38:02off his helmet,
38:03straight off his hands
38:04to the point of where
38:06Antonio Pierce
38:07and I started yelling,
38:08beat him up, ball!
38:09Beat him up!
38:10Because the ball
38:10was beating him
38:11to death that day.
38:14What, I give you
38:15a compliment coming out
38:16here?
38:16Now you can't catch
38:17a damn thing.
38:18David did not have
38:19a good day that Friday.
38:20Let's put it this way.
38:21I remember after practice,
38:22I went up to him,
38:23I said, hey,
38:24practice has never
38:25been your deal,
38:26but you've always
38:26shown up for me.
38:27He said, I know.
38:28I said, I'm not
38:29even worried about it.
38:31Bigger concern
38:32was Tom Brady
38:33and his knack
38:34for late game heroics.
38:37Brady gets set,
38:38takes the snap,
38:39back to throw,
38:40lobs one right
38:41for more touchdown!
38:42The Patriots,
38:43I believe,
38:44with 2.42 to go.
38:4617,
38:4717-14
38:48is the final,
38:49okay?
38:5017-14,
38:51fellas.
38:52One touchdown,
38:53we are world
38:53champion.
38:54Believe it,
38:55and it will happen.
38:5717-14,
38:58the final,
38:58let's go!
38:59Now,
39:00maybe I was trying
39:01to convince them
39:02of something
39:02that I probably
39:03didn't believe
39:04at that point.
39:05And they were
39:05the only ones
39:06that could make
39:08it happen.
39:08I couldn't do
39:09anything at that
39:09point.
39:10I'm not on the field.
39:11And Eli Manning
39:12do it.
39:13This is what
39:13every quarterback
39:14lives for.
39:15This is the position
39:16you want to be in.
39:17This is it.
39:18You got a chance
39:18to win the Super Bowl.
39:19The ball
39:20is in our hands
39:21in a two-minute drive
39:23at the end of the game.
39:24It's crazy as it sounds,
39:25but you'd rather be down
39:26four points
39:28than down three points.
39:29The reason for that
39:30is if you're down three,
39:31once you get
39:31that scoring position,
39:32you get conservative
39:33and you settle
39:34for the field goal.
39:35Down four,
39:36you got no option.
39:37It's touchdown
39:38or nothing.
39:39Touchdown
39:40or nothing.
39:42Super Bowl champs
39:43or Super Bowl losers.
39:45One play
39:46could make the difference.
39:50Manning takes the snap.
39:51Back to throw.
39:53Under pressure.
39:54Avoids the rush
39:54and he's going to
39:55fight out of it.
39:57Still fights out of it.
39:59Now throws it
40:00deep downfield.
40:01Wide open Tyree
40:02who makes the catch.
40:04Number 20.
40:05What a play.
40:06What a play by Manning.
40:07What a play.
40:08This team won't quit, Bob.
40:20It's third and five.
40:21They swarmed the quarterback.
40:23I mean,
40:23they're there
40:23very fast
40:25and it's very difficult
40:26to pick Eli out.
40:28I feel, you know,
40:29my jersey getting tugged.
40:30They're grabbing on
40:31and I'm thinking,
40:32oh no.
40:33He's getting sacked
40:34and I'm like,
40:35oh,
40:36this kid can't get sacked
40:37right now.
40:38The first person I see
40:39is Chris Snead
40:40standing in front of me
40:41and I,
40:41for one split
40:43of a half a second,
40:44I think,
40:44maybe I should throw
40:45the football to him.
40:46That got out of my mind
40:47immediately
40:48and I said,
40:49you know,
40:49I just got to keep
40:50my feet pumping
40:51and maybe something
40:52will happen.
40:53Eli falls in practice
40:54and trips
40:55when nobody's even around
40:56and by himself
40:58and that is a fact.
41:00Eli keeps his feet.
41:02I look downfield
41:03just for somebody.
41:06I can't say I saw
41:07David Tyree.
41:08I saw a white jersey
41:09in the middle of the field
41:11and I said,
41:11I got to try to make
41:12something happen.
41:13As you know,
41:14throw the ball
41:14over the middle of the field.
41:15If the ball's high,
41:17nothing good comes out of it.
41:19Why do you throw the ball
41:20in the middle of the field
41:22like a Hail Mary?
41:23Are you kidding me?
41:26Now I see David Tyree go up.
41:28I see kind of the way
41:30that he's got the ball
41:32and it's in one hand
41:34on the side of his helmet.
41:35This guy clamps it
41:37to his helmet
41:38with one hand
41:39and then bring the other hand
41:41back and pins it
41:42and lands on his back
41:43and keeps the ball
41:44off the ground.
41:45That right there
41:46let me know
41:47we're going to win this game
41:48because for something
41:49that magical to happen
41:50in a season
41:51that's been so magical,
41:53you could not lose.
41:56The play was so magical
41:58it made Plexico
42:00Burris' game-winner
42:01seem routine.
42:03Rarely do you get
42:03a touchdown.
42:05That was the touchdown.
42:08That easy.
42:09I'm seeing him run
42:10wide open in the end zone.
42:11I'm just saying,
42:12you know,
42:12hurry up and get down.
42:13Let's get this thing caught
42:15because it can only get worse
42:16the longer that ball's in the air
42:17and it's hung up there forever.
42:28Touchdown, Giants!
42:30And that is it.
42:31The New York Giants
42:32have knocked off
42:33the New England Patriots
42:34for the most improbable win
42:36in recent memory.
42:38I'm thinking,
42:40we're the world champions.
42:42This is it.
42:43Doesn't get any better than this.
42:45How about Michael Strahan?
42:46After all these years.
42:47Yes.
42:51They may be on those beaches
42:52in California for a while.
42:54To be at your best
42:55on the biggest stage
42:58of the biggest game
42:59of your life
43:00and possibly the last game
43:01of your life,
43:02it was as if
43:04somebody took a pen and pad
43:07and they wrote down a script
43:08and said,
43:09you know,
43:09this is the perfect ending.
43:11I still can't believe it.
43:13I can't believe
43:14that the New York Giants
43:16have won
43:17the freaking Super Bowl.
43:20It's unbelievable.
43:24Even more unbelievable
43:26was the coach
43:27he shared the stage with.
43:31In my wildest dreams,
43:34I never thought
43:35that I would last
43:36more than one season
43:37with Tom Cops
43:39and then to win
43:40a Super Bowl
43:40with him as coach.
43:43It's fitting.
43:44You know,
43:45he deserves it.
43:46The hell of a football coach
43:47and he's had to change
43:48his method to get there
43:50and I'm glad he changed it
43:51for me
43:52and for my teammates
43:53that we were able
43:54to get to the mountaintop
43:56with him.
43:57You know,
43:58the tears,
43:59they're ready to come out.
44:00I held back
44:01a little bit at times
44:02but if I let them go,
44:04they weren't going
44:04to be stopped.
44:11For the second year
44:12in a row,
44:14Manning
44:14was the MVP
44:15of the Super Bowl.
44:22He knew the feeling
44:23of accomplishment
44:24that he had
44:25the year before
44:26and I know
44:27he wanted me
44:28to have that same feeling.
44:29You want to be down four
44:30at the end.
44:32That's what I told you.
44:33You don't feel
44:34you can't be aggressive.
44:35If you get out three,
44:36you're going to try
44:36to take a field goal.
44:38You know,
44:38it's great to have him there
44:39and to share that
44:40moment and that game
44:42and that memory
44:42with him.
44:45One final memory
44:46came on the streets
44:48of New York City.
44:50The Canyon of Heroes,
44:52the parade,
44:53you cannot imagine,
44:56you cannot describe it.
44:57I can sit here
44:58and talk
44:58until I'm blue in the face.
45:00It doesn't do it justice.
45:01You just think
45:02about the other people
45:03who have been involved
45:05in that parade
45:05and whether it's
45:06sports figures
45:07or war veterans
45:09or just so many people
45:10you're linked to.
45:12I can still see
45:13the ticker tape parade
45:14for General MacArthur
45:16in my mind
45:17and that's what
45:17I related to.
45:26As far as you could see
45:27were people
45:28hanging out of windows,
45:29confetti.
45:30Forget about just lining
45:31the avenue,
45:33the street.
45:33The blocks deep
45:34down the side street.
45:37That was the bigger rush
45:38than just about anything
45:40I've ever experienced
45:41in my life.
45:43A coach
45:44who was nearly fired,
45:47a veteran
45:48who almost retired,
45:51and a quarterback
45:52who hadn't lived up
45:53to his family name.
45:56Now,
45:57all greeted
45:58as world champions.
45:59We would like
46:00to extend this
46:02to every other team
46:03in the NFL.
46:04You know what we did
46:05to you,
46:06we...
46:07We...
46:08We stomp you out!
46:09We stomp you out!
