01:14On January 11, 1992, the Green Bay Packers introduced their new head coach.
01:21A few weeks later, Mike Holmgren was introduced to Green Bay.
01:26I had been there about a month.
01:29So I'm in the market, and I've got a little cart, and I'm getting some stuff.
01:33And I'm walking down the aisle, and I see about 40 feet away a little old lady just looking over
01:40the edge of her cart coming at me.
01:43It looks like it reminds me of my grandma.
01:46And I kind of move to the right, and she moves over there.
01:50I move over here.
01:51She moves over.
01:52So pretty soon, she's not going to let me by.
01:54She's not.
01:55So our carts go bang.
01:58And she just looks at me and goes, you're the new coach.
02:01I said, yes, I am, man.
02:03She goes, hey, California, let's kick some butt.
02:10Long before he was stalked in grocery aisles, Mike Holmgren was just another high school teacher in Northern California.
02:20He was an assistant coach for the football team, although he was head man in tennis.
02:26He also taught history and performed at school fundraisers with a doo-wop group called Big Bop and the Choppers.
02:48But in 1981, at the age of 32, Mike Holmgren stopped running in place.
03:00What followed was a meteoric rise that took him from high school to the pros in just five years.
03:08In 1986, the San Francisco 49ers hired him to be the Corvacs coach for Steve Young and Joe Montana.
03:17In 1992, with no head coaching experience at any level, Mike Holmgren was hired by the Green Bay Packers.
03:30Holmgren left a perennial Super Bowl contender for a team with one playoff win in the last 25 years.
03:41He was going from the penthouse to animal house.
03:49One month after Holmgren came on board, the Packers traded for Brett Favre, a quarterback who lacked experience.
03:57And Darryl Thompson is tackled in the end zone by Brett Favre.
04:02But made up for him with enthusiasm.
04:14He had seen it and coached it with Montana and Young.
04:18And so he comes to Green Bay and to say that I was this raw, gun-slinging young quarterback would
04:26be an understatement.
04:28He's got the youngster in now. Let's see what he can do, huh?
04:32If you didn't think it could get any more ugly, it is.
04:36Why doesn't we have... Why did he...
04:42Can he play? Does he know what to do?
04:44It was so fun for him to create something that was very different.
04:51Blue! 58, 30, 60!
04:52And there was a side of him that really wanted to try those things.
04:55Throw it away. Throw it away. Throw it away. Throw it away.
04:59And early on, he tried them a lot.
05:01He was the riverboat gambler. He was the gunslinger.
05:04But on more than one occasion, he'd come over to the sideline and I'd go,
05:08OK, you're not going to throw another pass in this game.
05:10I'm going to hand the ball every single time. I'm taking the ball out of your hands.
05:13No, no, I'll be OK. I said, OK.
05:14And there was this constant thing like that early on.
05:18But the former teacher knew it was best to let students learn from their mistakes.
05:25Get the speed up, Steve. They make the switch. Put in the other quarterback.
05:30Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Wait a minute.
05:34Wait a minute. But, no, wait a minute.
05:37But, you know what? He's got to know he's f***ing up here, OK?
05:41Eventually, they became partners.
05:44I said, look, you and I are joined at the hip.
05:46And we're either going to get to the top of the mountain together
05:49or we're going to wind up in a dumpster.
05:51But it'll be together.
05:53Adrenaline bump in the huddle?
05:54Really?
05:55All right. You all right?
05:56I'm calm.
05:57It's a tough place to get the ball.
05:59I know. I'm calm.
06:00I'm calm.
06:00I'm calm.
06:03I'm calm.
06:04In their first year together, Favre and Holmgren had a winning record
06:08but didn't make the playoffs.
06:11They were missing a defensive presence.
06:16Reggie White, man.
06:18All-pro Reggie White was both a preacher and a pass rusher.
06:24And during his free agent tour, White proclaimed that God would tell him where to sign.
06:30When we were trying to sign Reggie, I phoned him up and I left a message on his answering machine.
06:35Reggie, this is God.
06:38I want you to play in Green Bay.
06:40And then I hung up the phone.
06:43After all the press conferences and everything, he came to my office.
06:46He goes, in his voice, you go, hey, Mike, that was pretty funny.
06:50That was good.
06:51White joined the Packers for the 93 season.
06:54Just as Brett Favre converted from rebel to disciple of the West Coast offense.
07:03Back goes Brett Favre.
07:04Favre looking.
07:05Now comes to the end zone.
07:06In traffic.
07:07Oh, I don't know.
07:11Right between two defenders.
07:13Who can throw it better than Brett Favre.
07:17The Packers made the playoffs in 93 and 94.
07:22By 1995, Favre was the NFL's MVP.
07:27The Packers won the NFC Championship.
07:31Over the middle.
07:32Touchdown.
07:33Oh, what a catch.
07:34They were the NFL's next big thing.
07:37A champion in waiting.
07:42Didn't take long.
07:44Didn't take long at all.
07:46All they had to do was, you know, wait for the Cowboys to get out of the way.
07:51You know.
07:54Desmond Howard.
08:00We were looking for somebody that we thought could really potentially be a great player.
08:05And I think that we couldn't find anything wrong with Desmond Howard.
08:09He's one of the guys we couldn't find anything wrong with.
08:12They have one of the premier coaches in the NFL, and Joe Gibbs just came off the Super Bowl victory.
08:18So I thought that everything was just going to fall in place and be great.
08:24Obviously, it didn't go as scripted.
08:27The Desmond Howard movie would have been rated D for disappointment.
08:32He was the fourth overall pick and played three seasons in Washington, but was left unprotected in the 1995 expansion
08:39draft.
08:41He was taken by the Jacksonville Jaguars, then released after one year.
08:47In the spring of 1996, Howard signed a one-year deal with the Green Bay Packers.
09:03Desmond Howard's career had yet to take off.
09:06And it seemed the career of the reigning MVP might be ending.
09:13When you're taking as many painkillers as I was taking at one time, you know it's not right.
09:21He was addicted to the prescription painkiller, Viking.
09:25And when he bottomed out, Brett Favre was taking a dozen a day.
09:30And at first, I used it for pain.
09:32After a while, I used it for recreation.
09:35Had it been affecting my play, I would have said, hey, this is killing me.
09:40But, hell, I mean, I was playing great.
09:42Wasn't sleeping.
09:43I mean, it did the reverse for me.
09:45I was sleeping maybe ten hours a week.
09:47I was practicing fine.
09:48No one knew anything.
09:50But, like with any person with addiction, you know, you start off with one pill, it's just going to take
09:56more and more and more.
09:59And eventually, that'll land you in jail if it doesn't kill you.
10:04I did not have an inkling that he had that severe a problem, but he, you know, he was in
10:10trouble.
10:10Sometimes you need someone else to say, if you're not going to do it, we're going to do it for
10:14you.
10:15And I said, okay, we've got to do something about this.
10:17And for right now, let's forget about football.
10:19For right now, we must forget about football.
10:21And we just got to get you healthy because this, this is not a road that you want to go
10:25down.
10:28In May of 1996, Favre entered rehab.
10:33It's kind of a difficult time because
10:40Voluntarily, I'm going to go, I admit, into an entreatment facility.
10:46All he had to do was go to rehab 30 years and two weeks ago today.
10:52All he had to do was go to rehab and Super Bowl champions.
10:57And how it wasn't even guaranteed a roster spot.
11:02We knew his ability, but he was always, he was always hurt just a little bit.
11:06And so in the meetings, I remember, you know, the question was not his ability.
11:11The question was, is he durable enough to help us?
11:14Otherwise, we just have another player who can never play.
11:18By the third game of the 1996 preseason, Howard was still on the bubble.
11:24He wasn't even assigned a wide receiver number.
11:27But one punt return changed everything.
11:3677-yard punt return.
11:38Desmond Howard.
11:39This was an elusive run at first.
11:42Set up the punter.
11:43Breaks a fecal tackle.
11:46And then it was speed after that.
11:49And dances into the end zone.
11:51When I returned that punt, it was proof to everybody that they were right, that I could do what they
11:56thought I could do.
11:57Desmond Howard made the team.
11:59But the Packers had a roster full of stars.
12:04No one was expecting him to have an impact on the 1996 season.
12:28After barely making the team, Desmond Howard became the league's best kick returning man.
12:46The Packers won their first three games by an average of 30 points.
12:51Brett Favre threw 10 touchdown passes with only one interception.
12:56Half-bought.
13:11Two months after leaving a drug rehab clinic, Brett Favre was playing like the reigning MVP.
13:19Brett came out firing.
13:22He was off to the best start ever.
13:28Holy cow!
13:29It was zeroed in with two defenders around the receiver.
13:33I'll tell you, Jim, this Brett Favre is something else.
13:36Brett came out leaner and meaner and ready to go.
13:39He came out kicking butt and taking names.
13:41And Jim McMahon, who was the quarterback on the team that year,
13:44said, well, hell, all of us should go get cleaned out next summer.
13:48Then it makes Brett play like this.
13:49We all need a little sitting rehab.
13:52At this point, because we had gone through all the grinding stuff.
13:57At this point, I might make a joke.
13:59You know, my goodness, you know, that was quite a thrower or whatever I'd say.
14:02Now, are you all right?
14:03Yeah.
14:04No more rocket balls, please.
14:05I was teamed up.
14:06No, I know.
14:07We kind of believed in the same thing as far as our goals and how we had to get to
14:12them.
14:12But we also knew to keep it fun.
14:17What do you think Mike would do if he knew I had a dip right now?
14:20Do you have one in?
14:22I just think the ice capades.
14:24My head's getting bigger.
14:25These hats are getting smaller.
14:26Shut up.
14:28There's Mr. Miyagi up here on the board.
14:31Oh, yeah.
14:32Washed on my car.
14:33You think God never farted?
14:35Brett Favre could afford to relax.
14:38Because of his disciplined play, the Packers had raced to an 8-1 record.
14:44But off the field, Favre took some risks.
14:48For Halloween, we had this plan.
14:50We were going to go to Mike Holmgren's house and knock on his door and, hey, trick-or-treat.
14:55Big kids, but, you know, not unusual in Green Bay.
14:59And not only get candy or whatever from him, but just keep pestering him.
15:04You know, not get candy and leave.
15:06We're going to Coach Mike Holmgren's house.
15:09Get a little candy from the big bar.
15:12It's near the end of where kids should stop coming, you know, and all of a sudden, the doorbell rings.
15:20I love Frank.
15:21Trick-or-treat.
15:22Trick-or-treat.
15:24Trick-or-treat.
15:25And I can remember saying, trick-or-treat.
15:27And he said, well, I'm sorry, I'm all out of candy.
15:30You know, you're not even going to believe this, but we just gave out our last piece of candy.
15:35I am sorry, Gabe.
15:36I am so sorry.
15:38I like your outfits, though, and you're all so beautiful.
15:41Not you, necessarily.
15:43I hear one of the guys go, hey, Coach Holmgren, this is Coach Holmgren, everybody.
15:47Hey, can we come in?
15:49We'd like to come in and see your house.
15:51So one of them starts walking in the house.
15:53And BB's just, hey, we want some candy.
15:56And he keeps, like, holding the door.
15:57And, you know, Mike's kind of like, I don't have any candy.
16:00Wait, whoa.
16:01And I put my hand on his chest, and I think we're going to fight here, you know.
16:05Please.
16:06Wait, please.
16:07I'm sorry, we have none of that.
16:09Bye-bye, honey.
16:09Don't you want any?
16:11I guess we don't have none.
16:14Bye-bye.
16:15Please.
16:16Wait, please.
16:18We don't have any left.
16:19See ya.
16:20Kill them now.
16:21This kind of went on for a few minutes.
16:24They said, wait a minute.
16:25Wait a minute.
16:26And the gig was over.
16:29Oh, gee.
16:30That's enough.
16:32Get out of here.
16:32No candy?
16:33Look at this.
16:35Wait a minute.
16:38I was just saying, wait, what?
16:39We were all these little kids, weren't you?
16:41These are all my kids.
16:42Really?
16:43What if I get better?
16:44We just get...
16:45Hey, you know, you're sick.
16:49You are sick.
16:50Hey, I'm going to pay you guys.
16:51I am sorry.
16:52Give me money.
16:52You know what I'm going to do?
16:53Yeah, give me money.
16:55Here's what I'm going to do.
16:56They loved every minute of it.
16:57Hey, trick or treat.
16:58I was coming in this outfit.
17:00You might be like, what are you doing?
17:02We had a great feeling on that football team.
17:06Great personalities.
17:07Whoa, 58, 30 seconds.
17:09But when November began, the Super Bowl favorites were unmasked by a devastating strain of injuries.
17:17In the span of one month, the Packers had lost their three most important pass catchers.
17:24Hey, now listen.
17:25Okay, Freeman's out of the game.
17:26He broke his arm.
17:27So now we just go with our regular guys.
17:29I'll call regular stuff.
17:33Antonio Friedman missed four games with a fractured forearm.
17:39Their most explosive wide receiver, Robert Brooks, was already lost for the season.
17:46And in the week 11 loss to the Chiefs, tight end Mark Jamorek sprained his foot.
17:53We had no receivers, and it became apparent.
17:55We're scoring 35 points a game, and now all of a sudden we're playing, and we can't score 10.
18:01A lot of teams will just fold at their tent and call to the season.
18:05It can be justified.
18:06We lost our leading receiver.
18:08We lost our leading tight end.
18:10It was like, can we keep doing this and succeed?
18:16The Packers had been sprinting towards the Super Bowl.
18:19Now, they were a dead team walking.
18:28Their next game was in Texas Stadium.
18:32The place where the Packers' playoff run ended in each of the last three seasons.
18:42Green Bay didn't score a touchdown and lost their seventh straight game to the Cowboys.
18:53I'm sure there were some people that questioned whether or not, if we got to the playoffs and had to
18:59face Dallas, could we beat them?
19:00After dominating for the first two months of the season, the NFL's number one offense was in sheds.
19:08The Cowboys are the thirdly dominated and outclassed the Packers tonight.
19:13This was no contest.
19:17Their offense turned in its worst performance of the season.
19:22And bad just got worse.
19:25Mike Holmgren got fired up and fired himself.
19:30I was so mad.
19:31Hey, look, the Packers ended up winning the last eight games of the season by an average of 21 points.
19:39That includes playoffs.
19:41That I could not function as a play caller.
19:44I could not.
19:46I mean, I just, I could hardly...
19:52...ticked off at what was...
19:53So I told Sherman Lewis, I said, you call it.
19:56Call it.
19:56I can remember thinking, well, we let him down going in at halftime.
20:02The defense picked them up and ignited a turnover.
20:08Oh, there it is.
20:09Intercepted.
20:10Touchdown, Doug Evans.
20:11Evans on the interception and takes it in.
20:17The Packers never looked back.
20:24After their comeback win in St. Louis.
20:29Green Bay never lost another game.
20:36Their defense ended the year ranked number one in the NFL.
20:40He's going to go down the sidelines.
20:43So did their offense.
20:45They gave up 20 touchdowns the entire season.
20:49MVP!
20:50MVP!
20:51MVP!
20:53MVP!
20:53Brett Favre won his second straight MVP, throwing 39 touchdowns and only 13 interceptions.
21:05And he throws the ball to the corner.
21:07Caught man!
21:09It's a touchdown!
21:10What a throw and what a great catch!
21:13Who can throw it better than Brett Favre?
21:21Plays that were once considered youthful indiscretions were now categorized as veteran satin.
21:28All right, looking down, goes back to the left.
21:29He can run.
21:30No, he's still with the ball.
21:32And he is.
21:35Oh, the touchdown!
21:37Holy cow!
21:39And that's when you start seeing the underhand passes and the sidearm passes.
21:43Just the way they drew it up, huh, fellas?
21:46And when they result into touchdowns, then no one's going to say anything to hold number four.
21:55Favre's status as the NFL's best quarterback.
21:58It also transformed Desmond Howard, a journeyman, into genuine start.
22:04He's looking for a block.
22:05Got one.
22:05To the 20.
22:06To the 30.
22:07Cuts back against the range.
22:0835.
22:09Good goal.
22:0940.
22:10That one man.
22:11He made Royals.
22:12He made me good.
22:14Howard produced the greatest statistical season any punt return man had ever had.
22:21Guess what?
22:23Desmond Howard is at it again.
22:26We became so good at returning kicks.
22:30Had I been playing against us, I wouldn't have kicked the ball to Desmond Howard.
22:34I would not have done it.
22:39If you think the kicking game is not that important, then look at that season.
22:48Waltzing into the end zone for the touchdown.
22:55There's no doubt that without him, we would have not gotten to the Super Bowl.
23:03The Packers finished the regular season with a 13-3 record and won more games by 25 points
23:10or more than any team in NFL history.
23:16What a great football team this is.
23:18They have dominated the competition.
23:20Oh, my God.
23:21Dominate.
23:22That would all be a football.
23:26Unless the Packers won it all.
23:28All right, for the second year in a row, you're Central Division champions.
23:32Congratulations.
23:32I couldn't be more proud of this team.
23:34But we're not done yet, right?
23:37Let's go.
23:38Let's go.
23:39As the playoffs began, heavy rains at Lambeau Field turned the cathedral of football into a quagmock.
23:47Hi, everybody, and welcome to rain-drenched Lambeau Field.
23:50No frozen tundra today.
23:54Neither the weather nor the 49ers could stop Desmond Howard.
23:58In the first quarter alone, he compiled 117 return yards and scored a touchdown.
24:07You would think somebody would just not kick it to him.
24:14To the 40.
24:15On his feet.
24:16To the 45.
24:17Outside big field.
24:18To the 45.
24:19To the 40.
24:20He may go.
24:2025-20.
24:2215-10-5.
24:24Touchdown.
24:24And suddenly, the Packers win it.
24:2871 yards by Desmond Howard on his very first run.
24:50I really don't know how I got out of that mess.
24:53I just reacted and faked out a couple of guys, broke a couple of tackles.
24:57And the next thing I saw was just, you know, a mud pasture ahead of me leading to the end
25:03zone.
25:03So, that's as good a run as I've ever seen in a playoff game.
25:07What a run and what a way to serve the football.
25:22By halftime, Desmond Howard had already put in a full day's work.
25:28And with the 49ers staring at a 14-point deficit, Howard decided to punch out.
25:37We're receiving the second half kickoff with the best return man in the league.
25:43And I kind of turn around and I glance down to the one end and there are no return people.
25:49There's no one down there.
25:51Everyone else is lined up.
25:52We're all ready to go.
25:53And there's not a return guy down there.
25:55I'm used to being one of the last guys out of the locker room anyway.
25:58That's just how I am.
26:00Now, I'm walking down the tunnel.
26:02And I hear a whistle.
26:04Next thing I know,
26:08I see the ball in the air.
26:10I say,
26:11Oh, man, you gotta be kidding me.
26:14So now,
26:15I'm jogging down the tunnel.
26:17I see like a mass cram up in the ball and bodies flying everywhere.
26:22I'm like,
26:22No, they didn't start this without me.
26:25How about that?
26:28You have 10 guys on the field.
26:30No one who returned the kick.
26:31They kicked the ball and they recovered.
26:33Wow.
26:37We are trying to find out if there's anything wrong with Desmond Howard
26:40because he normally is the return man on the play.
26:42You know,
26:43Desmond Howard could have some explaining to do here.
26:47Then all of a sudden,
26:49here comes Desmond Howard,
26:50you know,
26:50like a stroll in the park,
26:52walks over to the sideline,
26:53walks over to me.
26:54I go,
26:56Where have you been?
26:57He was supposed to be back there.
26:59He goes,
27:00Coach,
27:01my jersey,
27:01I was all dirty.
27:02You know,
27:03I mean,
27:03my clothes.
27:04I said,
27:05Well,
27:05good.
27:06I'm really happy that you're feeling better about how you look.
27:09That's not exactly what I said.
27:13After Desmond's debacle,
27:15the Packer offense did the dirty work in the second half.
27:19And you're going to Desmond.
27:20And you're going to.
27:21Walking it into the right corner.
27:23And the Packers may have put it away right there.
27:26They scored 14 unanswered points and earned a spot in the NFC Championship game.
27:38Next week,
27:39wherever we play,
27:40we got to have 11 guys on the kickoff return team, man.
27:43We do, right?
27:4411.
27:45We've got to play with 11.
27:46That was one of the strangest things that I've ever experienced in all of my years of coaching,
27:52including that never happened to me when I was coaching in high school.
27:56Keep preparing yourself.
27:57I feel so good.
27:59I feel so good.
28:00I am giving you tomorrow off.
28:02I am giving you tomorrow off.
28:04Game.
28:04The tradition bound Green Bay Packers against...
28:08It's the upstart Carolina Panthers.
28:21It's more to me than the Super Bowl.
28:25It was football.
28:26It was cold.
28:28It was in Green Bay.
28:30It was all Packer fans.
28:33To us, that was the ice ball.
28:38This is what you play for.
28:39This is the big game before the biggest team.
28:56Farr, back to throw.
28:58Going to the end zone.
28:59There's Dorsey Levin.
29:02Touchdown, Dorsey.
29:04It's a touchdown.
29:05And a perfect throw by Brett Farr.
29:09I was just thinking,
29:12we're not going to lose this game.
29:14I mean, this is meant to be.
29:15I mean, this is what it's all about.
29:21Brett, straight back in the pocket.
29:22Quick drop.
29:23Goes to the outside.
29:24There's a fade.
29:25Touchdown, Antonio Freeman.
29:27A little fade down and out by Freeman.
29:29And a perfect throw by Brett Farr.
29:32The first championship game in Green Bay
29:34since the ice bowl was a blowout win for the Packers.
29:38It is all over.
29:39And the Packers are on their way
29:41to New Orleans for Super Bowl 31.
29:45The season that began with turmoil
29:47was ending in triumph.
29:51Now listen,
29:52you've got to enjoy the journey.
29:54You've got to enjoy the road to get there.
29:57You work too hard.
29:58All of us work too hard
29:59not to enjoy every moment.
30:01That question gets asked.
30:03If you don't win the Super Bowl,
30:06do you consider this season a failure?
30:09I don't believe that.
30:11And I don't want my players to believe it.
30:13We enjoyed the journey so far.
30:15Let's keep doing it.
30:16I'm proud of all of you.
30:19A cover or some sort of blanket
30:21over the table.
30:23So Mike got up there
30:24and he started speaking about
30:26the Super Bowl and the playoffs
30:28and what it all meant.
30:30There's a lot of reasons
30:31you want to play this game.
30:32And we all love this game.
30:34But let's get down to it here.
30:36You know,
30:37if you win the game,
30:38this is what you all get
30:39in your locker the next day.
30:40And I pull the thing out.
30:44Here's the playoff bonus money
30:46in a big stack.
30:48Guys were kind of looking around like,
30:49man,
30:50I don't know if they were really that aware
30:52that we were actually getting paid
30:53to go through the playoffs
30:55in the Super Bowl.
30:56It was kind of like,
30:57can we actually get paid this
30:59to play in this game?
31:00I thought it was a pretty fun way
31:02to kind of relieve the tension
31:04just a little bit
31:05and also a little bit
31:06of a motivational tool
31:07because everyone likes
31:08a little spending money.
31:12Black 59, Razor!
31:14Black 59, Razor!
31:1739, 7!
31:19I was thinking,
31:21man, that had to be awesome.
31:22Just checking that play.
31:23Guessing right.
31:24We had the same play.
31:26We just changed
31:27the number system up.
31:28Well, lo and behold,
31:29they're giving us the look
31:30that would be a good time
31:32to check the Razor.
31:33So I'd take a gamble
31:34and check to it.
31:35Second down and nine.
31:36Brett Favre appears to be
31:37changing plays
31:37at the line of scrimmage.
31:39And it works out perfect.
31:45He's got time.
31:46He's throwing it downfield.
31:47He's got it open.
31:53It is going to be a touchdown
31:54in the Wilder, he likes it.
31:56I can't believe it works
31:57in the ball places
31:57at the Super Bowl
31:58and I've been watching it
31:59all day on TV.
32:01Look at Brett Favre
32:02coming off the field.
32:03He is so happy.
32:05He's so happy.
32:06He's so happy.
32:09He's so happy.
32:10He's so happy.
32:23I took a chance
32:25and thankfully
32:26they played the coverage
32:28I'd hoped
32:28and we hit it.
32:30I think old Brett
32:31called the exact
32:32right audible
32:33for the situation there.
32:35Face, face, face, face!
32:37In the second quarter
32:38another audible
32:39led to the longest
32:40touchdown pass
32:42in Super Bowl history.
32:45Brett has had
32:46a receiver open
32:46twice on changes
32:48of plays.
32:48This time
32:49he's going to go
32:49along a field
32:50there's Antonio Freeman.
32:5150, 45, 40, 35, 30
32:54down the sideline
32:55and a long pass play.
32:57Brett Favre again
32:58checking out
32:59at the line of scrimmage
33:00and Antonio Freeman
33:02on a perfect throw
33:03by Brett Favre.
33:04Before the first half
33:05ended,
33:05Brett Favre threw
33:07two touchdowns,
33:08ran for another
33:09and built a 13-point lead.
33:12Yes, touchdown!
33:14Brett Favre does get
33:15the end zone.
33:15Now Brett saw
33:16that daylight jump,
33:18took a great shot
33:18at it and he got it.
33:20Put the Packers
33:21way ahead.
33:22Hey, we got some
33:22big plays coming.
33:26Only 15 points.
33:29The coronation
33:30suddenly turned
33:32into a contest.
33:38As the Packers
33:39offense waned,
33:40the Patriots
33:41waxed the NFL's
33:42number one defense.
33:46Curtis Martin
33:47takes it straight
33:48up the middle.
33:49New England
33:50is back in the
33:51ballgame.
33:52When they came back
33:53and scored,
33:54you know you're
33:55saying,
33:55oh, man,
33:57this is going to
33:57be one of those
33:58that goes right
33:59down to the wire.
34:00That's the feeling
34:01I had.
34:02I guess it'd be
34:04safe to say
34:05there's been a big
34:06momentum swing here.
34:07I would say
34:08this situation
34:09is critical.
34:12The Patriots
34:13had cut the lead
34:13to six
34:14and their
34:15special team
34:15strategy
34:16had neutralized
34:17Desmond Howard
34:18on kickoff returns.
34:21The best thing
34:22they did with
34:22the kick returns
34:23was to kick them
34:24high and not
34:26real short
34:26but just not
34:27real deep.
34:28So I think
34:29they were effective
34:29with that.
34:30But the only
34:31mistake they made
34:32is when they
34:32started to come
34:33back,
34:34I think they got
34:34a little cocky
34:35and got a little
34:36arrogant because
34:37that's the one
34:38they finally
34:39kicked deep.
34:43It was all
34:45Adam Vinatieri
34:45and he's the
34:46greatest kicker
34:47of all time
34:48but
34:48made a mistake
34:50rookie mistake.
34:54The Patriots
34:55had just scored
34:56a touchdown.
34:57The momentum
34:58was on their
34:59side.
35:00Super Bowl
35:0231
35:02was at a
35:03tipping point.
35:05I remember
35:05looking up at
35:06the ball
35:06saying,
35:07I'm backing
35:08up.
35:08Oh my God.
35:09Here is a
35:10high flow to
35:10put his
35:11nice
35:12Desmond Howard
35:12has to back
35:13up.
35:15Now we're
35:15going to have
35:16a chance
35:16to set up
35:17a decent
35:17return.
35:18That's what
35:19they gave
35:19us.
35:20They gave
35:20us a chance.
35:23From the goal
35:23line to the
35:245 to the
35:2410 to the
35:2515.
35:25Threw a hole
35:26to the
35:2620.
35:26To the
35:2630.
35:27Outside
35:27reach to
35:27the 40.
35:28He may
35:28hang on.
35:36Touchdown
35:36for
35:37Desmond
35:38Howard.
35:39They are
35:39saved 99
35:41yards.
35:58It was
35:59one of the
35:59biggest
36:00momentum
36:00changing
36:01plays in
36:01Super Bowl
36:02history.
36:03And the
36:03only kickoff
36:04returned for
36:05a touchdown
36:05in Desmond
36:06Howard's
36:0611-year
36:07NFL
36:08hoodie.
36:15Once you
36:15return a
36:16kickoff,
36:1699 yards
36:17in Super Bowl,
36:18you take
36:19all the
36:19wind out
36:20of their
36:20sails and
36:20pretty much
36:21any hope
36:22that they
36:22had of a
36:23comeback.
36:25At that
36:26point,
36:26you knew
36:27the game
36:27was over.
36:29Here's
36:29Drew,
36:29straight back
36:30in the
36:30pocket.
36:30Here they
36:30come
36:31again.
36:31Reggie
36:31got him
36:32again.
36:33Oh my
36:34goodness,
36:34what a
36:35way to
36:35end it.
36:36And now
36:37baby,
36:38it's over.
36:39The
36:40Vick's
36:40Lombardi
36:41trophy is
36:41coming home
36:42where it
36:43started.
36:47The
36:47former high
36:48school
36:48assistant
36:49had just
36:50won the
36:50Lombardi
36:51trophy as
36:51head coach
36:52of Lombardi's
36:53franchise.
36:55Mike
36:56Holmgren's
36:56journey wasn't
36:57complete.
36:58he still
36:59had one
36:59more
36:59ride.
37:01I was
37:02still
37:03just
37:04unbelievable.
37:05We won
37:05and I'm
37:06looking up
37:06we're going
37:07to win
37:07this thing
37:08and then
37:08pretty soon
37:08you're up
37:09in the
37:09air.
37:11I had
37:12never been
37:12before,
37:13never been
37:14after him
37:14carried off
37:15anywhere.
37:16Now I'm
37:17on,
37:17I'm up
37:18in the
37:18air
37:20going
37:20around
37:21and I'm
37:22looking for
37:22Bill Parcells
37:23and I'm
37:23trying to
37:24find him.
37:34I finally
37:34see him
37:35and he
37:35looks at
37:35me and
37:36does this
37:37just goes
37:38in other
37:38words he's
37:39going to
37:39enjoy it.
37:42Enjoy it.
37:47Parcells
37:48had his
37:49own
37:49championships
37:49he wasn't
37:50he wasn't
37:52he wasn't
37:52hurting about
37:52it.
37:54you know
37:55better team
37:55won.
37:56And I
37:57said put
37:57me down
37:58I wanted
37:59to shake
37:59his hand
38:00and that's
38:01I always
38:01do that
38:02win-loser
38:02draw
38:02and I
38:03wasn't
38:03going to
38:03not do
38:04it this
38:04time.
38:09And so
38:10looking back
38:10on it
38:12looking back
38:12on it
38:13I would
38:13have liked
38:13to ride
38:14around a
38:14little bit
38:14more.
38:15That would
38:15have been
38:15nice.
38:20Heisman
38:21Howard did
38:22to go to
38:23the Super
38:24Bowl is a
38:25wonderful
38:25feeling
38:26period.
38:27But
38:27to go as
38:33a major
38:34contributor
38:34is the
38:35ultimate.
38:38it's been
38:39five years
38:39now since
38:40you won
38:40the Heisman
38:41is there
38:41a Super
38:42Bowl MVP
38:42pose and
38:43you made
38:43one up?
38:45Well you
38:46think about
38:46it.
38:46To be on
38:47the podium
38:48at the end
38:48of a Super
38:49Bowl game
38:50with Reggie
38:51White and
38:52Brent
38:52is something
38:55that man
38:57it could
38:58almost bring
38:59a young man
38:59to tears.
39:09but there
39:10were no
39:10tears
39:10from
39:11Brett
39:12Favre
39:13because
39:14there were
39:14no more
39:15mountains
39:15left to
39:16climb.
39:17After
39:17great
39:17wins
39:18I've
39:19had tears
39:19come out
39:19after
39:20tough
39:20losses
39:20I've
39:21had tears
39:21come out
39:22and here
39:23I am
39:23in the
39:23greatest
39:24win
39:25of my
39:25career
39:26being up
39:26on the
39:27podium
39:27and just
39:28kind of
39:28soaking it
39:29all in
39:29thinking
39:30this is
39:31it.
39:35You know
39:36I shouldn't
39:36be feeling
39:36this.
39:40It was
39:41more
39:43I didn't
39:43want it
39:43to be
39:44over.
39:45As I
39:46think back
39:46and I've
39:47heard other
39:47guys say
39:48this
39:48what you
39:49remember
39:50most is
39:50not so
39:50much that
39:51game
39:53it's the
39:54journey.
40:00what you
40:01remember
40:01most
40:02are the
40:02games
40:02that
40:03got
40:03you
40:03there
40:03and
40:04the
40:04practices
40:05and the
40:05bus
40:05rides
40:07and all
40:08of a
40:08sudden
40:08that
40:08was
40:08over.
40:13in the
40:13locker room
40:14Mike's
40:14giving us
40:15talk
40:15and I
40:15slipped
40:15off to
40:16the
40:16shower
40:16and I
40:18just
40:19I just
40:20kind of
40:20felt
40:21numb
40:26I
40:27thought
40:27those
40:27were
40:27the
40:28painkillers
40:28you
40:28went
40:29to
40:29rehab
40:29for.
40:33I
40:34was
40:35thinking
40:35about
40:36that
40:36stuff
40:37and so
40:38it
40:38came
40:38out
40:38this
40:39way.
40:39Listen
40:39to
40:40me.
40:42This
40:42trophy
40:43this is
40:44it.
40:45It was
40:45named
40:45after
40:46Vince
40:47Lampardi
40:48you
40:49playing
40:49Green
40:49Bay
40:51as
40:52important
40:52as it
40:53is to
40:53any
40:53other
40:53team
40:54and any
40:55other
40:55player
40:56it
40:56means
40:57more
40:57than
40:58us.
41:00I
41:01love
41:01football
41:02and I'm
41:03a fan.
41:04It's
41:05my
41:05business.
