01:33They always beamed the Bucs game to Orlando, and it was a nightmare.
01:37It was an absolute nightmare to watch that ugly team playing those big high school stadium.
01:43Wake up!
01:43You're looking at me like I'm not even talking. You're not hearing me.
01:47Tampa Bay Buccaneers wasn't known for anything except losing.
01:51They were Bush League, an organizational black hole where careers went to die.
01:57As fate would have it, that's exactly where Warren Sapp ended up in the 1995 draft.
02:03I gotta relive that nightmare. Thanks.
02:06Not a good time right now.
02:08Due to allegations of a positive drug test, the standout defensive tackle from the University of Miami dropped all the
02:15way to the Bucs at number 12.
02:18The yucks. I mean, the worst day of my life. Now I was a part of this.
02:25They get to stay in the state of Florida. This is a Florida guy. So it's a good constellation.
02:28Is this the situation where one of these days you're going to look back and say, hey, I told you
02:32so?
02:32I mean, I'm just happy that the Bucs made this decision.
02:36It wasn't too far from home, I'll tell you that.
02:39Ready to move on and play some ball right now.
02:41With their second first-round pick, Tampa gambled again, drafting undersized linebacker Derek Brooks.
02:49The Bucs had hit the jackpot and Warren Sapp knew it.
02:52He and Brooks had crossed paths before.
02:56I'm 18 years old, leaving high school in a Florida-Georgia All-Star game.
03:01The player of the year, defensive player of the year is Derek Brooks.
03:04So I'm a tight end. We get to go up against each other.
03:07So he lines up and I put the move on him.
03:10Left him at the line of playing tight end.
03:12Caught the ball and this guy came screaming across my face.
03:16I dropped the ball. I said, holy.
03:19I mean, the fastest football player I've ever been around in my life.
03:23And he was just 17 and I was 18 at the time, just leaving high school.
03:26I had no idea that four years later we'd be on the same team trying to build the worst NFL
03:31team into a champion.
03:36In Tampa, Sapp and Brooks joined safety John Lynch, number 47.
03:42And together they became the cornerstones of the franchise.
03:46Lynch had been there since 1993 and had already earned a reputation.
03:52And he walks up to me and he says, I'm John Lynch.
03:54And I looked at him and I said, yeah, you're that hidden white boy that plays safety.
04:00That's the first encounter that Lynch had.
04:04He is a monster.
04:06That's what he was, a hard-hitting white boy that plays safety and he was something special.
04:11Despite his reputation, Lynch still had to prove himself to Sapp, who scoffed at his affluent background.
04:19We kind of had our run-ins for a while.
04:21You know, I was raised out in San Diego.
04:23My dad had made a success of himself financially.
04:27Oh, I mean, Lynch.
04:28I just want to know, is your dad a senator?
04:30See, a son of a senator?
04:32You ain't been in no adverse situation.
04:35He kind of used to joke around.
04:36I was raised with a silver spoon in my mouth.
04:38If you make it past 24 with a silver spoon in your mouth, because most of y'all kill y
04:42'allself.
04:43You know that.
04:43I got too much.
04:44I only got two BMWs, a red one and a black one.
04:48I want a blue one.
04:49You couldn't have thin-skinned Warren Sapp because he was going to bust you on everything and anything.
04:54No, that's backwards, you dumbass.
04:56Which are you facing?
04:58You're about as dumb as a box of rocks.
05:00He was always going.
05:01Da-da-da!
05:03Da-da-da!
05:06Da-da-da!
05:08Ha-ha!
05:09With a strong foundation in place, Tony Dungy was hired in 1996 to take the Buccaneers to the next level.
05:16A year later, Pewter Power was born.
05:20The Bucs was nothing before Tony got out.
05:23Amazing.
05:24They should have never changed him from Pewter Power to that weird analog clock jersey.
05:33I'm glad they went back to wearing those.
05:37He built the pyramid right in front of us and said, this is how we're going to do it.
05:41We got to practice doing things right all the time.
05:44Little things, huh?
05:44Details.
05:46We realize that if everybody has their gaps and everybody's responsible for what they need to be responsible for, we
05:52can win.
05:53We can win.
05:56In Dungy's six years in Tampa Bay, the Bucs sent multiple defenders to the Pro Bowl and made the playoffs
06:02four times.
06:04But they never reached the Super Bowl.
06:07And they could never beat Philadelphia.
06:10The Eagles knocked the Bucs out of the playoffs in 2000 and 2001.
06:15Both times, the offense failed to score a touchdown.
06:19For a lot of guys on our team, those first two years of traveling to Philly, really scared the ****
06:24out of them.
06:24I mean, let's just be honest.
06:25I mean, scared the **** out of them.
06:26I mean, we used to get in that game and it'd be cold and Philly would be flying around hitting
06:31people on defense.
06:32They used to just handle us.
06:34I mean, that was a very frustrating thing for a guy like me because I knew they weren't a better
06:38football team.
06:39It was just at times, we were just afraid.
06:43Ultimately, the head coach was held responsible.
06:46Tony Dungy was fired after the 2001 season.
06:49I think I can say this because he's in the position that he's in.
06:54He just let the offense wax too much.
06:56He really did.
06:58It always felt like the offense wasn't held to the same standards that we were held to.
07:02And there started to be some tension.
07:05He just had a too-lax attitude for that ball.
07:12You average under 10 points a game for the playoffs for five seasons.
07:18Fifty-nine points in six playoff games.
07:21When you average under 10 points a game as a team, your offense needs a lot of work.
07:31I mean, what else do you say?
07:33On Oakland head coach, John Gruden, who had led the Raiders to two straight division titles.
07:40How about something here?
07:42Get something going!
07:44Get after their ass!
07:46Gruden's intensity earned him the nickname Chucky because of his likeness to the killer doll from the horror movie Child's
07:53Play.
07:54He certainly fit the bill as a high-profile coach.
07:57In 2001, Gruden was named one of People Magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People.
08:05It was looking pretty good those days, you know.
08:08I had this California hairstyle, I guess, you know.
08:11I got a reputation to try and live up to also.
08:14I mean, I am one hot mother f***er now.
08:17Every time we tried to give him a hard time, he was so proud about it.
08:20You know, he really felt like he was America's sexiest man, you know.
08:24He thought he should have been number one.
08:25I don't know how he got in, but I wasn't in the top 50.
08:28I was definitely in the top 15.
08:31Since Gruden was still under contract with the Raiders, the price for his services was high.
08:36The Bucs gave Oakland two first and two second round draft picks.
08:40A king's ransom for a head coach.
08:43I told Gruden, is there supposed to be like some elephants or, you know, like a Tyrannosaurus Rex or something
08:50that comes with you?
08:51It's just this little bitty fella right here, I get?
08:53That's it?
08:54Then he looks at you and he gives you that look and he says, I'm 50, one of the 50
08:57most beautiful people.
08:58I'm like, hey, now that makes it all better.
09:01Thanks.
09:01How you doing?
09:03It was apparent early on that Gruden was nothing like his predecessor.
09:07Everything going all right?
09:09Anything we can do to make camp a little bit better experience for you?
09:14Whereas Dungy was a pat on the shoulder pads, Gruden was a kick in the pants.
09:19Come on, Marquise, get your ass in here!
09:22This guy had a full-fledged bite.
09:25A venomous bite.
09:27I need a Z!
09:28God dang it, Daryl!
09:30I mean, you just couldn't sit still.
09:31And he used to always say, bring juice to the practice field.
09:34And if you ain't got any juice, you fake it.
09:38When we come out here practicing in the morning, I really don't care what kind of moods we're in.
09:43We're going to have a lot of f***ing juice and it's genuine.
09:46Gruden had a lot of juice for a man who hardly slept.
09:49He normally arrived at the office at 3.30 a.m.
09:54I'm a morning guy.
09:55I feel like I can get a lot more done early.
09:58And I got a routine that I've had for about 20 years since I've been in coaching.
10:02You go in his office and it's jet black dark.
10:06Mind you, I get there at 7 o'clock in the morning.
10:08He's been there for hours.
10:10Jet black dark.
10:11And there's nothing on but that computer screen and he's packing.
10:15And I just watched the man work and I really got an appreciation for somebody that really loves the game.
10:21Every day, you build.
10:23You put blocks down.
10:24You guys ever see a big, beautiful mansion?
10:26You got to build the foundation, man.
10:28That's what we're doing here.
10:30Understand that.
10:30You got to build the blocks.
10:32You got to put blocks on every day.
10:35Gruden knew the key to winning over the team was winning over its most outspoken player, Warren Satton.
10:42I just wanted to make sure Warren was happy.
10:44He's like that ogre underneath the bridge.
10:47You know, he's going to let you know, don't come across my bridge.
10:49I'm going to take your head off.
10:51Now I might just go crazy.
10:53Lose my mind.
10:55In the first practice, the offensive-minded coach earned Satton's respect by going on the attack.
11:02I said, well, we got defense.
11:04Let's see what this guy can do.
11:07First play 9-0-7, like yesterday.
11:10In what is normally a power running drill, Gruden caught the defense off guard by calling a quarterback bootleg.
11:22I looked him right in the eye, and I said, if you're scared, say you're scared.
11:28And he looked back at me and he said, well, it looked like they've been running boot on you for
11:31the last three years, so now what?
11:34And that's where the challenge started.
11:369-0-5, crazy bastards.
11:39You're used to maybe a running back on the team saying, I'm going to run right through you today.
11:43And he said, all right, bring it on, you know.
11:44But here's the head coach, Lynch, I'm throwing five slants right by your ear.
11:48You ain't going to know what hit you.
11:49And I go, you aren't even playing.
11:51What are you talking about?
11:52That's why you loved him, man.
11:54When I saw him in the hallway, it wasn't...
11:56With Tony, it was, hey, how you doing, Warren?
11:58With Gruden, it was, you son of a...
12:00I'm going to get you today.
12:02This was Gruden's challenge, and he laid it on the defense in no uncertain terms.
12:08Being great was not good enough.
12:11If you're such a great defense, why don't you score on defense?
12:15And I'm talking nine touchdowns.
12:17Score nine touchdowns.
12:19If you're so good, I keep hearing about all these stats, catch the ball, intercept it, and run it back
12:25for a touchdown.
12:26If you want to dominate and win a Super Bowl, you've got to score nine touchdowns.
12:30We've got to score.
12:31He challenged us.
12:32He challenged us.
12:32We've got to score.
12:33Get a little bounce, fellas.
12:35Win on three.
12:35One, two, three.
12:38At the start of the 2002 season, the defense took charge.
12:43After an opening day loss, the Bucs shut out the Ravens to kick off a five-game winning streak.
12:49When we got to Baltimore, that was kind of our way to jumpstart our season at the defense,
12:54because I picked Chester Taylor up that day and bammed him into the ground like a skate.
13:03We all kind of laughed about it.
13:05We just told each other, I said, we just got to flat foot and knock people out, fellas,
13:09and we won't get this.
13:10As a consolation prize for myself and anybody else who roots for the Ravens, that's the
13:17last time the Bucs beat the Ravens.
13:23So, you know, I'm glad you enjoyed beating the crap out of them in Baltimore, but it never
13:29happened again.
13:37We were after everything that year, and we had the players to do it.
13:43Linebacker Derrick Brooks was everywhere.
13:45In a five-week span, he scorched us.
14:09The defense made five and one, but the offense had yet to improve under Gruden, and threatened
14:17to be the team's Achilles' heel.
14:20Are you sure?
14:22He scored 25, uh, this.
14:25He scored 35 against the Bengals.
14:29On Gruden's offense was nearly outscored by his defense.
14:34Hey, we don't know what the f*** we're doing.
14:37Part of the problem was a steep learning curve with Gruden's West Coast system.
14:42Hey, I'm not going to be a real patient guy now.
14:45Dance the red right, the X always goes away from the call, man.
14:49Round 50.
14:50You're right.
14:51You are the you, man.
14:53Come on, Jameel.
14:54You know what?
14:55You're like my wife when you get in space.
14:58You just get lost.
15:00Hey, listen, on the dummy audibles, don't be a dumbass yourself.
15:04When we have a dummy...
15:05The offense and its verbiage were especially hard on the quarterback.
15:08Even a veteran like Brad Johnson.
15:11Hey, Brad, you got trips left.
15:13Trips left, 73 Reno, half-back slow screen right.
15:18You get a blitz, go to 59, turn or delta.
15:21It was going to be a challenge.
15:22We spent a long time together those first three or four months.
15:26And maybe the verbiage was a little difficult at times.
15:29If I call past 94 punch X deep cross, it's a very simple play.
15:34There's a concept.
15:35It's a deep cross, and then it's a flat.
15:38Don't just start f***ing panning all over.
15:40You know what I mean?
15:42Are you up here or not?
15:43Oh, he should have gotten yelled at before he even stepped in the camp for being nothing more than an
15:52average quarterback with Chris Carter as his receiver in Minnesota.
16:00I'm with you the whole way.
16:02The early frustration with the offense was obvious.
16:05Receiver Keyshawn Johnson lashed out at the head coach on national TV.
16:11I hate to break this to everybody out there, but you're only allowed to have five eligible receivers.
16:16And if you want two tight ends and two backs, you only have one receiver in a game.
16:20We call it U-Personnel.
16:22I want U-Big Ten!
16:24And I remember on Monday Night Football, we called U-Personnel McArdle instead of U-Personnel Keyshawn.
16:31I mean, U-McArdle!
16:32U-U-U-U!
16:33U-Keen and McArdle!
16:34Get Keyshawn out of the game!
16:36And he didn't like it, and I don't blame him for not liking it.
16:38He didn't want to come out of the game.
16:39But that stuff happens all the time.
16:42Bottom line was, we tried every which way we could to get Keyshawn to be a big part of the
16:46game plan, and he was.
16:48Oh!
16:48Caught!
16:49It's going!
16:4940 by 40!
16:51It's a touchdown, Tabamay!
16:53And Keyshawn scores his first touchdown!
16:56The Bucs traded for Johnson after the 1999 season in an attempt to improve a perennially weak receiving core.
17:04That offseason, he did not endear himself to some of the veterans.
17:09One in particular never forgave him.
17:12In 1999, we go to the championship game, we lose.
17:16So now, I got my whole coaching staff at the Pro Bowl with me.
17:19I mean, the thing's painted with Bucs.
17:21Keyshawn's a New York Jet.
17:23Keyshawn comes to me and says,
17:25Listen, dawg, me and you unite.
17:28We can put this thing together.
17:29You just need a little offense.
17:31And you know, mind you, I just lost a game 11-6.
17:34Oh, I get you that seven points, Cub.
17:37We can do this.
17:38So I go to Dungey and I lobby for Keyshawn.
17:41I lobby.
17:42They sign him to a great deal.
17:44We go do offseason.
17:46We always do offseason together.
17:47All of us do.
17:48We work out, we go eat together, and then we break from there.
17:51That's Buck Ball.
17:52That's our family.
17:54There's no other vacation place.
17:55We're in Florida.
17:56We're in Sunshine State.
17:57Where else you want to go?
17:58I got mangroves for you to fish in.
18:00I got the Miami three hours away you want to party.
18:04I got Orlando you want to take the kids to Disney World.
18:06Where you want to go?
18:07I got everything.
18:08It's a great state of Florida.
18:09It's my home.
18:10I've lobbied for you to be on my team.
18:12I need five points to get to a Super Bowl.
18:14Hello?
18:15Don't you want to go too?
18:18He's a no-show.
18:20He never was one of us.
18:22He just wanted the contract and the notoriety, but he didn't want the work.
18:26It's a difference between mandatory and voluntary mandatory.
18:30You know, I'll take my chances on the voluntary mandatory stuff.
18:34I'm not saying that he couldn't play the game because he was a good player.
18:37But was he one of those rare air special guys?
18:40No.
18:43For all his faults, Johnson caught 76 passes in 2002 and brought a swagger to the offense.
18:51Take three.
18:53Take three.
18:54Shut your ass up.
18:56All that screaming.
18:58Play football.
18:59Man, you a fake-ass John Randall.
19:01Shut your ass up.
19:03Sorry, Brad.
19:03I'm going to get you killed, but sorry about that.
19:05He was a big and reliable target for Brad Johnson.
19:10And together with free agents Joe Jerovicious and Kenan McArdle,
19:14the Bucs finally had enough weapons to beat the Eagles.
19:18Or so they thought.
19:20That was our nemesis.
19:22We thought maybe with Groot's, all right, things are going to change, and there we go.
19:25And it's the same old story.
19:27That team just wore us out.
19:30Brad Johnson was sacked five times and suffered a broken rib.
19:33Once again, Tampa Bay was humiliated in Philadelphia.
19:37He's going to run.
19:39He's in.
19:40Touchdown!
19:42Get that score, though.
19:43We'll be back.
19:44We'll be back.
19:48We're on the bus.
19:50Right underneath the bed.
19:51I'm looking out this window, and I mean, I just got a burn in my gut right now.
19:55Because I really hate the Philadelphia Eagles at this point, because this is the third time
19:59in a row they've gotten.
20:00And I just want to just, like, kill somebody right now.
20:02I'm on the bus, and I'm riding.
20:03There's nothing I can do.
20:05And I remember Groot looking over in the seat at me, and he said, hey, you know what?
20:08They'll never get us again.
20:10I said, you know what?
20:11They better not.
20:12And he said, no, no.
20:13He said, I got them.
20:14He said, I got their blisters.
20:16I know what they're doing.
20:17I have it down.
20:18And we're going to stick a stake right in this place.
20:21He said, we see them again.
20:23We'll dissect them.
20:26That was hot.
20:27Brad looked good.
20:28Brad looked great.
20:29And he threw all kinds of passes.
20:33And that was the best I'd see all year.
20:36The players were beginning to understand the system and appreciate the man who had implemented it.
20:42Goes on the edge.
20:43Oh, touchdown!
20:46Great call.
20:47Great call, huh?
20:49Great call!
20:50Oh, great call!
20:51Touch this.
20:52Throw five touchdown passes.
20:54You are the best today.
20:55After years of disappointment, the Bucs finally had an effective quarterback.
21:00But they always had Mike Allstott.
21:03And in 2002, the A-train was rolling.
21:07He's an anvil, you know.
21:10The Cleveland Brown game was a hot day.
21:12It's 115 heat index.
21:14So late in the game, we bring Allstott in, and we run 96 pounds.
21:24And honest to God, the run lasted five minutes.
21:34He went from right to left to right to left.
21:37And it was one anvil smash after another.
21:56It was the damnedest run I ever saw.
21:58Get that train going.
22:00Get that A-train going.
22:01It's A-train time.
22:03When he was running the football, no one was sitting on the bench on that sideline.
22:07Everybody wanted to get up and see what he was going to do to the next guy.
22:11Hand off Allstott running right.
22:16When I used to do my radio show, my favorite call of Gene was, Allstott up the gut.
22:22Allstott up the gut.
22:24Allstott up the gut.
22:26Allstott up the gut.
22:28He just used to have fun with it.
22:30Let's go, Mike.
22:34Allstott up the gut soon gave way to another saying.
22:39Gene Deikerov is really a great radio guy, and he kind of sounds like a buccaneer.
22:47If you can just imagine him holding someone up for their booty, their gold.
22:57The Rock is the brainstorm of line coach Rod Marinelli, and it took the form of an 80-pound
23:04piece of granite that ended up in the Bucs' locker room.
23:08The Rock is the opponent, basically.
23:11And you've got to visualize yourself holding on to a hammer and taking the best swings you
23:16can at that Rock, trying to crack your opponent.
23:19If you keep pounding that Rock, you keep pounding that Rock, eventually it's going to bust.
23:24And at first it's not going to feel like it's going to bust, but particularly if you come
23:27together and do it as a unit, eventually that thing will bust.
23:30And that became a rally cry that year.
23:33Hell no, Rock!
23:34Hell no, Rock!
23:36Hell no, Rock!
23:37Hell no, Rock!
23:39At 9-3, the Bucs hosted the Falcons and their cornerstone, Mike Vick, in a battle for
23:45first place in the NFC South.
23:48We come in on Wednesday.
23:49We pop the tape on.
23:51It's just the third down tape.
23:53Simeon Rice is beside me.
23:54And we're just watching the tape.
23:56And I mean, this guy is just, best footballer I had ever seen before in my life.
24:04And Simeon yell, hey man, is this a highlight tape?
24:09And somebody yells in the front of the room, hell no, is the third down real fool?
24:13And we're like, are you kidding me?
24:15You know, what great players like that, great athletes sometimes make you do is play passively.
24:20Um, because you see him making everyone else look foolish, but what you've got to do is
24:25just go after him.
24:26What is it?
24:28Michael Vick never had a chance.
24:30Not in the face of the Buccaneers defensive speed.
24:34How fast is that defensive speed?
24:37I can't even set up.
24:40I can't even set up.
24:43Part of the Bucs strategy was to assign Derrick Brooks as number seven's personal shadow.
24:49Brooks was our defining factor for anybody that we were going to face.
24:53Tell me now, we got Brooks.
24:55Vick, we got Brooks.
24:56Vick!
24:56To see Brooks, stop, start, shuffle, form, fit, tackle a guy like that, that was one hell
25:03of a play.
25:04These guys were fired up.
25:06It was a fun day.
25:08Vick ended up with only 15 yards rushing.
25:12Tampa's offense put up 34 points, and the Bucs took control of the NFC South.
25:19Touchdown, T-O-L-O!
25:24I thought our defense all week, he kept it cool.
25:27They talked about the great Michael Vick.
25:29He's a great talent.
25:30How you going to stop Michael Vick?
25:31How you going to stop him?
25:33Not one word was said about how somebody's going to stop this defense.
25:37Remember that.
25:38The greatness of...
25:39This is how good the Bucs defense was.
25:42They ruined Michael Vick, the rest of Michael Vick's regular season.
25:47He was on a tear going into that game.
25:51And the rest of the season, he had six touchdowns, five receptions, completed less than half his
25:57passes, didn't score a rushing touchdown.
26:01Less than four yards a carry.
26:03Like, they ruined the rest of his regular season because of how well they did.
26:11So this defense is ahead, or we're going to finish strong?
26:16Of course, that season, John's brother Jay was working double duty as a Bucs assistant
26:23and an arena lead quarterback.
26:26I know a lot about him because he coached the Redskins, and obviously, I'm from this
26:34area.
26:35So he coached the Redskins.
26:38They'd J-3 five touchdowns last night.
26:40They won 49.
26:42You know, my brother, he's talking about a guy that loves football.
26:45He was coaching for us and then playing for the Predators, and I love going to those
26:49games.
26:50Good luck, man.
26:51Thank you, man.
26:52Love you, bro.
26:53Ready or wrong?
26:54Hey, don't take them lightly.
26:56Get after their ass.
26:57All right.
26:57And my heart is racing faster during those games than it is during our games.
27:06Hey, hey!
27:08Hey, ref!
27:10Hey, you know what a late hit is?
27:12You guys just watch the game like a fan?
27:15Are you a fan tonight?
27:17It was a rough-in-the-passer penalty.
27:19Several of those they didn't call.
27:22Come on, ref!
27:23I just have had a history.
27:26Come on, John.
27:29Your defense hits people harder than that.
27:33Your defense kills people.
27:37Come on.
27:38He's just being a protective brother.
27:48I guess of telling referees what I think.
27:52Hey, Boris, what the f*** was that call on set?
27:55Are you kidding me?
27:57That's a face mask, man!
27:59That's my brother out there, man.
28:01You know, and that's a little bit different when your brother's a quarterback.
28:11Hey!
28:14Hey, Jay!
28:16Hey, Jay!
28:16Shot in the ass.
28:18Gruden's outdoor team needed a win in the season finale in order to earn a first-round playoff bye.
28:25The game-time temperature did not bode well for the warm-weather Bucks.
28:30Man, we hadn't won a game in the history of the franchise when temperatures were below 40 degrees.
28:37And it's cold out there.
28:38We got all the long sleeves on, and we got breath coming out of our helmets for the first time.
28:43And guys are like, you know, hey, look at this.
28:46You know, I'm saying this is not going to go well.
28:48These guys are not handling this very-
28:50All the players I can name from that group, from Simeon Rice to like, Sat Brooks, Lynch, Rob Johnson, Brad
29:01Johnson, all of them are from like the South or like California.
29:07Not very good circumstances if you're playing in the cold.
29:14The Buccaneers shut out the Bears.
29:17Wait a minute.
29:18Simeon Rice is from Chicago.
29:20He's right at home.
29:21Derrick Brooks, the league's defensive MVP, recorded his fifth interception.
29:26And Tampa finished the season with a franchise-best 12 win.
29:33Two weeks later, the Buccaneers celebrated with a playoff route of the San Francisco 49ers.
29:39Go to work.
29:41Got him, coach.
29:49Drop it back.
29:50Johnson off third.
29:50Now throws the ball toward the end zone.
29:52It is all caught.
29:53Touchdown, Tampa Bay.
29:55Touchdown, Georgia.
30:00Tampa Bay had come this far before.
30:03They hired John Gruden to push them farther.
30:06Once again, the road to the Super Bowl would go through Philadelphia.
30:13You know, it's an opportunity to maybe score an offensive touchdown in Veterans Stadium before they blow it up.
30:22And the friendly city has been unkind to our Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
30:26The night before the game, Gruden showed the team footage from September of 1995.
30:32The Bucs won at the venue, defeating Gruden's former team.
30:39He went back and we were in the orange uniforms and I had a pick in that game.
30:43He showed me making a pick and we beat him pretty good.
30:46I remember I was the offensive coordinator.
30:49I was Boy Wonder at that time.
30:51And after that game, I was Boy Blunder.
30:53People were throwing hoagies at me and everything.
30:55So we showed them a little NFL history to let them know that, my God, the Buccaneers have won here
31:00before.
31:00It's time we won there again.
31:02What an opportunity to silence these fools.
31:04Let's go.
31:05We've been waiting this for this.
31:06We've been preparing for this for all this year.
31:08We're ready.
31:10We're going to go out there and we're going to take our cuts at that rock, okay?
31:15That's all I know.
31:16And we got a hell of a game plan, man.
31:18Trust me.
31:19Just trust me.
31:20If it doesn't go good early, don't worry about it.
31:24Pound the rock and let's get the hell out of here.
31:2952 seconds into the game, the Eagles took the lead.
31:35It doesn't start well.
31:37Our offense is struggling.
31:38We're kind of slugging back and forth.
31:40And you couldn't help but start to say, here we go again.
31:43Then the Bucs got a lift from receiver Joe Jerevicius, a third-down specialist who nearly missed the game.
31:51That week, he was in a hospital room with his wife, you know, and it was his child.
31:56He'd just been born and things weren't going well.
31:59And we didn't think he was going to play.
32:01I did not think he was going to play.
32:03When we show up that Saturday, I see Joe.
32:05I walk up to him, I say, everything good?
32:08He said, I don't think so, but I'm good.
32:12Sleep-deprived nights of film study paid off for Gruden on the game's longest drive.
32:17And Joe Jerevicius was the key.
32:21Here comes Joe.
32:24I got him.
32:24That's what Gruden said.
32:26I got him.
32:273-59 at the spot.
32:29Don't see proceed.
32:30We had three receivers stacked tight.
32:34Bill here was isolated on the back side.
32:36And we tried to get Jerevicius a one-on-one option route against their inside linebacker.
32:41I believe it was Gardner.
32:43And in certain coverages, you got a chance to hit the lottery.
32:49It's caught Jerevicius.
32:5035 to the 40, to the 45, to the 50.
32:53Oh, this time I do.
32:5435-30.
32:55Jerevicius to the 20.
32:5615-10.
32:57He's on the bounce of the five-yard line.
32:59You go, Joe.
33:00You go, Joe.
33:01I've never seen Jerevicius run like that.
33:04He was flying.
33:06I have not seen Joe Jerevicius run that fast ever.
33:13I think he had a little bit of his son's spirit with him.
33:16And right then, the atmosphere changed on that side.
33:20Jerevicius' catch set up a one-yard touchdown run by Mike Allstott.
33:25It's pounded in the wrong time.
33:27Allstott running left.
33:28Throws the shoulder.
33:29Touchdown Tampa Bay.
33:31Mike Allstott takes it to the house.
33:34Leading 20 to 10 in the fourth quarter,
33:37Tampa had to ward off one last Philly drive.
33:42We have McNabb's sack.
33:44That damn McNabb is unbelievable.
33:46He reverses his field maybe once or twice and throws the ball.
33:50Big play.
33:51But he makes the four-point of the 11-yard line.
33:54The game is never over with this guy.
33:57Cornerback Rondé Barber, number 20, erased any doubt.
34:023.27 to go.
34:03McNabb dropping.
34:04That's intercepted.
34:05And the 10 to the 20.
34:07Goal.
34:07Coast to coast.
34:08Rodney Barber.
34:10Top 50.
34:11Top 40.
34:12Barber to the 30.
34:13Nobody's going to touch him.
34:14Rodney Barber.
34:1510-5.
34:17Touchdown Tampa Bay.
34:26The greatest moment I have in my life is seeing number 20
34:30hustling down their sidelines to send us to the Super Bowl.
34:33That was, uh, I don't know what the word is, uh, joy.
34:38The Buccaneers are the champions of the NFC.
34:41How about that?
34:43We're going to the Super Bowl.
34:44You shut the dead down bed.
34:46You shut the Players Live today?
34:46Shut the vent down.
34:47No more beds.
34:48Don't be感.
34:50We're going to theitan sleep on the world.
34:54There's no greater feeling
34:55than going into a place and taking.
34:59They had the whole cavalry there.
35:01They had horses and police cars.
35:03They had everything there to help with their celebration.
35:07And none of them got to celebrate.
35:10It was eerie.
35:12It was awesome.
35:14You know how when you win a championship, they tape off the field and roll the stage out in the
35:21middle of the thing and have a good time, right?
35:23I forgot we're in Philly.
35:26So there's no celebration that's going to happen in the middle of the field, right?
35:30I'm bouncing around.
35:31I got my hat on.
35:33Next thing I know, I realize I am the only Tampa Bay Buccaneer that's anywhere outside.
35:41Not on the field.
35:42Outside.
35:45I take off running.
35:46I get in the locker room.
35:47It's a full-fledged party going on.
35:51Super Bowl!
35:52Super Bowl!
35:53Super Bowl!
35:54Super Bowl!
35:55Super Bowl!
35:56Super Bowl!
35:57They handed me the George Hallis trophy.
35:59Here you go, big fella.
36:00I know you won't touch this.
36:03I gave it back to him.
36:04I said, nah, this is not the one.
36:05But we'll take this one back to Tampa and drop him off on our way to go get the other
36:09one because we ain't done.
36:14Theories aside, time was short.
36:16Super Bowl XXXVII was only six days away.
36:20And the game was across the country in San Diego.
36:24I was going home to San Diego, my hometown, which made it even more special.
36:28But it was just such a quick turnaround.
36:30We go out there and the coaching staff all stayed in Tampa because they wanted a game plan.
36:34So we were out there with no coaches.
36:36We stayed behind and we worked basically all day and all night on Oakland.
36:40And I remember putting Simeon Rice in charge of the team.
36:44Okay, Simeon's going to do bed check.
36:45He's going to take care of everything.
36:47I knew we were in good hands with Simeon Rice as a chaperone.
36:50I think he kind of said that in jest and we all knew that.
36:54I don't know if we would have showed up for the game had that been the case.
36:57Oh, I'll have fun.
36:58I'll break curfew.
37:00I'm going to set the tone right.
37:02No one missed curfew.
37:04There was too much at stake and too many bad feelings for Gruden's former team, the Oakland Raiders.
37:11He just wanted to shine his shoes with Callahan and Aldean.
37:13I mean, that's just what it was.
37:15He was going to show them that they made the biggest mistake of their life was letting them out the
37:19door.
37:20That week, Gruden left no stone and no rock unturned.
37:24Having coached Rich Gannon in Oakland, Gruden figured that he himself could best mimic the Raiders offense in practice.
37:33At some point during that week, I was going to be Rich Gannon and simulate the Raiders offense
37:38against the greatest defense in football.
37:42And that was a film I will never, ever lose.
37:46I was great that day.
37:49And when I threw that slant to Carl the Truth Williams right in front of Brian Kelly,
37:54I mean, the place went crazy.
37:56I did make some nice throws.
37:59You know what?
38:00It's kind of like a fish story.
38:01The longer you get away from it or the more it's told, the greater the story.
38:07Welcome to San Diego, California.
38:09Super Bowl 37.
38:10It is Tampa Bay versus the Oakland Raiders.
38:15Here we go, nine-nine.
38:18This has been working for a long time, Tom.
38:21Somebody has scheduled.
38:23Somebody has scheduled.
38:24Let's go.
38:25Let's go.
38:27You got to love this, huh?
38:29That was unbelievable, you know.
38:31I was on a headset, I remember, with my brother.
38:33And when Larry Zonka, standing right next to me, grabs my arm,
38:37says, hey, group, good luck.
38:40I told my brother, I said, hey, Larry Zonka knows my name.
38:43How about that?
38:44Was that pretty cool?
38:46I said, this is a big game today, Johnny.
38:48This is going to be one day I'll never know.
38:49She knows your name.
38:50All of the living 72 Dolphins have to keep watching football.
38:58They have to see the last undefeated team get beaten.
39:04So they have to keep watching football.
39:11Never forget.
39:13To neutralize the NFL's number one offense, Gruden knew they had to limit the Raiders' most effective play.
39:20The big play the Raiders had consistently gotten all year was a sluggo seam,
39:26where he's going to pump the sluggo.
39:28He's going to pump that slant and go, and try to get the free safety to go that way.
39:32And in so doing, he's going to throw that seam back side.
39:37So we must have run 100 sluggo seams, and it paid great dividends.
39:43Dexter, don't let him pull you with this pump.
39:45Get to our landmarks.
39:47In the Super Bowl, it played out perfectly.
39:50Every subtlety, every seam route, the Bucs were there.
39:54The pocket collapsed on Rich Gannon.
39:58Ooh!
40:00Alabama!
40:01We did a great job defending that in the game.
40:04I think Lynch called him out a couple times.
40:06Hey!
40:07Slug OC!
40:08Slug OC!
40:10Ready, it's it!
40:11Let's let the first down champion from the 45.
40:15And it pump fake, looking to it, right, throwing to it.
40:17Raul!
40:17Intercepted!
40:18Dexter chucks it to the 40, to the 35, to the 50.
40:21He's to the 45!
40:22Dexter!
40:23Dexter, I told you, buddy!
40:25I told you, it wasn't Slug OC!
40:27Dexter!
40:27He got the most random guy, no disrespect, he got the most random guy ever to be Super
40:36Bowl MVP.
40:37Dexter Jackson, because he was the free safety and he didn't bite.
40:46I called it, Marty, I called it!
40:49I told him right before the snap, it's Slug OC.
40:51We ain't even started yet!
40:53Let him keep throwing!
40:54Let him keep throwing!
40:57Overall, Tampa intercepted Gannon five times and returned three for touchdowns.
41:05In a one-sided affair, the Bucs were at their bratchest, boastful best.
41:11When it's third and sixth and Tim Brown runs it out round and he drops it, and Dwight Smith
41:17looks at him and says, damn, Tim, you waited 15 years to do that?
41:21And the fact that Jerry Rice didn't have a catch until the third quarter, and when he
41:25gets that catch, he gets up and says, hey, Jerry, welcome to the Super Bowl.
41:32Like that, that'd make the Super Bowl fun.
41:34I told you, Swann, you're from your boss!
41:37Keep your mind on the prize, let's go!
41:39Keep your mind on the prize!
41:41In the fourth quarter, Derrick Brooks put the exclamation point on Tampa's first ever Super
41:47Bowl.
41:48Looking again, throws up the bat, and it's in, it's in, it's in, it's in, it's in, it's in,
41:50Derrick Brooks, 30, he's got Derrick Brooks all the way, there it is, the dagger's in,
41:56we're going to win the Super Bowl!
41:58Super Bowl, baby!
42:01Boom, boom, boom!
42:03Right there, we're well-changed, baby!
42:05We're well-changed!
42:06Give me that!
42:07He's giving me that!
42:09Woo!
42:10Brooks gets it, and I meet him in the end zone, and I grab him by the head, and I'm
42:14holding
42:14him, and he's crying, and I look at him, I say, you stop it, it's something.
42:18We had the biggest prize of our life, and you just scored, you stopped that.
42:21You're going to make me cry, too.
42:24You know, you become such a tight family, really, and you've been through a lot, and
42:28your dream is to someday hoist that trophy, and right then, the realization that we were
42:33going to, it all just hit us.
42:36Hey, Derrick!
42:37Hey, Derrick!
42:38Hey, Derrick!
42:39What's happened to you, man?
42:40What's happening to you, man?
42:41I'm so proud of you, man.
42:43You're the champion, man!
42:44You're the star in the world, man!
42:47Hey, Derrick!
42:48Hey, Derrick!
42:49You did it!
42:49Yeah!
42:52You did it!
42:53The league had warned us about security. No family members were going to be allowed to come on the field,
42:58but we won with such time. The guys just started, Keyshawn I believe was the first who went up and
43:03got his kids, and we all just started being, and eventually the security couldn't do anything.
43:18The Bucks defeated the Raiders 48 to 21, and the defense finished with nine touchdowns on the season. The exact
43:28number Gruden said it would take to win a championship back in August.
43:38At age 39, Gruden became the youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl. It was only fitting that, after
43:47the game, they were playing his song.
43:50Bon Jovi is my hero.
43:57Bon Jovi.
43:58Honestly, I listen to Bon Jovi, and I drive my car wherever I can find him to listen to him
44:05play, and he has a song called My Life.
44:08This just sounds corny, man, but after the game, I look out there on the field, and there's Bon Jovi
44:13singing My Life.
44:14So I'm thinking, this is one hell of a day now.
44:18It's my life. It's now or never. I ain't gonna live forever.
44:27I am a huge Marjovi fan. So is my wife. I'm looking out for my wife. She's easily hanging around
44:32now.
44:33It's my life.
44:38It took 27 years, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had completed their journey from winless wonders to world champions.
44:49How about that, Mr. Glaser? Huh? We did it, man. Best in the world, man.
44:56The way we had done it, going from the yucks, as Sap says, turning a third-world country into the
45:02Taj Mahal.
45:02I mean, it just teaches you how difficult it is to attain one of those.
45:08Remember what anybody says. You know, I was there for this.
45:12Sometimes I kind of wear it around my house, but no one's there, and I just kind of look at
45:15it, you know.
45:17It's an awesome game, man. Awesome, awesome game.
45:22I'm just happy to say I was part of you.
45:25They always say football, you make friends for life.
45:29Family, blood, and I'll kill with them guards any day of the week, and twice on Sunday.
45:37Yes, sir.
