00:23Hi everybody, I'm Brian Kenney, and welcome to ESPN Classic's Top 5 Reasons You Can't
00:28Blame. On January 3rd, 2003, top-ranked Miami and No. 2 Ohio State met in the Fiesta Bowl
00:35for the national championship. Favored by 11.5 points, the Hurricanes found themselves
00:41in a dogfight. Down by 10, they rallied to force overtime. Up 24-17 in OT, Miami appeared
00:48to have defended its national title when Ohio State's last gasp pass on fourth down was ruled
00:53incomplete. A brief celebration ensued. But hold everything. Enter field judge Terry Porter,
00:59who flagged my ass interference. Blessed with a fresh set of downs, Ohio State tied the game
01:06and went on to win 31-24 in double overtime. One call had clearly changed the national championship.
01:13But before we count down the top five reasons you can't blame the officials for Miami's loss,
01:17let's revisit that wild night in Tempe, Arizona.
01:24Miami and Ohio State for the BCS national championship.
01:29Us and Miami went in undefeated. You know, clearly number one and two in the nation.
01:37Miami was a huge favorite. People were talking about they could beat the Bengals.
01:41Dorsey to throw. Wings it. Touchdown!
01:46They had, you know, Dorsey who was leading the offense. McGahee.
01:50Here's McGahee picking his daylight and taking off, folks. Goodbye.
01:54We had Jonathan Doma and D.J. Williams, two first-round picks at linebackers.
01:59Let's not pick up D.J. Williams.
02:03Nobody really gave us a chance to go against the mighty Hurricanes.
02:06Week after week, they were winning by seven points or fewer.
02:15We kept hearing all week long, Ohio State doesn't have to be athletes.
02:18They can't hang with Miami. There's no way they're going to win.
02:21I felt like everybody was, you know, thinking, you know,
02:24it was going to be another easy national championship win for Miami.
02:35So it seemed from the game's early breath, Ken Dorsey's 25-yard touchdown toss to Roscoe Parish
02:41put Miami up 7-0.
02:43By the end of the first quarter, Ohio State had managed 23 yards of offense.
02:48Rick Grenzel back, hands to Maurice Claret, he's hit and dropped.
02:52But the second quarter told a different story.
02:55The Buckeyes forced three turnovers and seized a 14-7 halftime lead.
03:00Claret has a five-yard line, four, three, two, one, touchdown.
03:04It kind of developed from the halftime on into what everybody thinks of now as a classic.
03:09Grenzel looking, throwing, in zone, and it's intercepted by Sean Taylor.
03:14Taylor at the tail. Taylor still going.
03:16We were in for, you know, a fight all the way down to the wire.
03:19We knew that every yard, you know, every possession was going to count.
03:23He's at the 10. He's at the 5. Willis into the end zone. Touchdown, Miami.
03:28Except for Willis McGahee's 9-yard touchdown in the third quarter,
03:31which cut Ohio State's lead to 17-14,
03:34the second half was mostly a study in defense.
03:38Simon Frazier throws him down at the 30.
03:41Then with just more than two minutes remaining,
03:43Parrish exploded for a 50-yard punt return.
03:46Presco Parrish to the 40. Still going. 35 to the 30.
03:50And he is finally brought down.
03:52Gaining just three yards in three plays,
03:55Miami's survival rested on the right leg of kicker Todd Seavers.
04:01The snap is down. Kick is on the way.
04:04It's got the distance. And it's done.
04:06We're going to overtime.
04:08After winning the coin toss,
04:10Ohio State elected to give Miami the ball.
04:13We knew going into it, you know, we're going to have to make some plays.
04:16We're going to have to move the ball and score points.
04:23After Kellen Winslow's touchdown catch put Miami ahead 24-17,
04:27the Buckeyes faced a 4th and 14 on the Hurricanes' 29.
04:33Winslow steps up and goes to the sidelines,
04:35and that's good for the first down.
04:37You don't complete 4th and 14 against Miami.
04:41You don't complete 4th and 14 hardly ever against anybody.
04:44Three plays later, it was 4th down again,
04:47this time from the 5-yard line.
04:50Championship on the line right here.
04:524th down. Here's the snap.
04:54It was just a simple, you know, fade route
04:57where the quarterback just lobbed the ball up
04:59and let the receiver try to make the play.
05:01Here comes the play.
05:02It was a play for me.
05:04Fade stopped.
05:06He throws and is left away.
05:08As soon as I seen the ball touch his hands,
05:10I shot my hands through his hands.
05:12And it is incomplete.
05:14I had a chance to still catch the ball,
05:16but, you know, I did.
05:17So I was like, man,
05:20it's like, dang, the game over with.
05:21I kind of whipped my helmet off
05:23and threw it on the ground in disgust.
05:25We started running toward the boxes
05:27that had the back-to-back
05:28national championship t-shirts.
05:30Miami wins the national championship.
05:33And all of a sudden, there's a flag.
05:36Oh, there's a flag.
05:37Miami has stormed the field
05:39and they threw a flag.
05:41A flag, and I'm like, where did that come from?
05:43And I'm trying to figure out what's going on.
05:45Fly to the flag.
05:47You didn't know how to take it.
05:48You didn't know what it was going to be.
05:51Hold on, I've never seen anything like this.
05:53You've got to be kidding me.
05:56I was off the charts with anger
05:58about what happened.
05:59I feel whenever a game is cooked like that,
06:02in any setting,
06:03you should let the players win it out.
06:04Oh, that's a tough call there.
06:06Bad call.
06:07It was a bad call, I know.
06:09I'm out of college now.
06:10I can talk about it.
06:11Line judge Derek Bowers,
06:13a member of the Big 12 officiating crew
06:15who was closest to the play,
06:17ruled the pass incomplete.
06:18But he was overruled by field judge Terry Porter.
06:22The one referee is right at the pylon.
06:25He says, incomplete.
06:27And all of a sudden, Terry Porter decides,
06:30you know, I think I'm going to extend this game.
06:32It's not over yet.
06:33How could he see something that the ref,
06:35who was right there, by us didn't see?
06:37We got, you know, four more downs
06:39to punch in the end zone,
06:41send it back to a second overtime.
06:43Prenzel takes it into the end zone.
06:45Touchdown, Prenzel.
06:46In the second overtime,
06:48Ohio State scored a touchdown
06:50in just five plays.
06:52Lorette, inside the five,
06:53pushing into the end zone.
06:54Touchdown.
06:56Needing seven points to tie,
06:58Miami drove to the two.
07:00But after gaining just one yard in three plays,
07:02the championship came down to one final snap.
07:06Back is Dorsey to throw.
07:08Yeah!
07:08And he throws it in the end zone.
07:10Yeah!
07:10And it's incomplete.
07:11The Buckeyes win the national championship
07:14for the first time since 1968.
07:17The Buckeyes are the kings
07:19of a college football hill.
07:21All the things that happen in this game,
07:23all the great plays,
07:24there's one moment
07:25that will always stand on everybody's mind.
07:27I didn't see the penalty,
07:28but, you know, they called it.
07:31This flag was three weeks late.
07:35It was three weeks late.
07:36The game was over.
07:37It was the most absurd call
07:39in college football history.
07:40If you want to throw the flag,
07:41you should have thrown it
07:42when the ball was dropped.
07:43It's as if Terry Porter said,
07:46I'm not going to let this team
07:47win a championship.
07:53You just saw why the officials,
07:55Terry Porter in particular,
07:56are blamed for Miami
07:57losing the 2003 Fiesta Bowl.
07:59We'll roll out the top five reasons
08:01you can't blame them
08:02in just a moment.
08:03But first, here are some factors
08:04that just missed the cut.
08:05We call them the best of the rest.
08:09The Canes weren't able.
08:12Miami committed five turnovers.
08:15Then he drops back.
08:16He's hitting.
08:17Oh!
08:17The football, Ohio State has it.
08:19You turn the football over five times
08:21against any team,
08:22you're not going to win.
08:23Rusko Parrish!
08:24Oh!
08:28Five turnovers is an extraordinarily
08:29high number.
08:30That's going to come back
08:31to bite you.
08:32And it's not the referee's fault.
08:34Our other best of the rest,
08:36third and wrong.
08:38The game should have never
08:40won the overtime in the first place.
08:41Toward the end of the fourth quarter,
08:42we had a key third down
08:44that I threw a ball
08:45to Chris Gamble.
08:46I knew I caught the ball,
08:47you know,
08:47but they said I was out of bounds.
08:48That's close.
08:49He caught that right on the sideline.
08:51That's first down.
08:53Buckeyes,
08:54game's over.
08:55The very next play,
08:57we play at the Roscoe Pass,
08:58and he puts them in field goal position
08:59to tie the game up.
09:01But if Chris Gamble
09:03was called inbounds,
09:04this whole discussion
09:05about the official
09:07making the call
09:08is a move point.
09:10Fourth and 14.
09:11In the first overtime,
09:13Miami was one snap away
09:14from victory.
09:15I just remember
09:16fourth to 14.
09:18I'm thinking it's over.
09:18We're in a great position
09:20to win the ball game
09:20right there.
09:22Trailing 24-17,
09:24Ohio State needed
09:2514 yards to stay alive.
09:28And we're down
09:29to the last snap of the game.
09:31It was fourth down.
09:31There was really no other option
09:33if we wanted to win that game.
09:35Could you face any more pressure
09:37than fourth and 14
09:38in a national championship game?
09:40Although Craig Krenzel
09:41had completed just five passes,
09:43he was well aware
09:44that Miami's starting quarterback,
09:46Kelly Jennings,
09:47was sidelined
09:48with an ankle injury.
09:49We had to put a freshman
09:50in with Glenn Sharp,
09:51so we was going to play coverage.
09:53They went two backs.
09:54They went max protect,
09:55and they went to the guy
09:56that we was trying to protect.
09:57They went to Glenn.
09:58It is fourth down at 14.
10:00The national championship
10:01is on the line.
10:02He was up pressing.
10:04I know I had to get
10:04a certain depth
10:05to get the first down.
10:07Here's the snap
10:08for the title.
10:09If we don't complete that pass,
10:11then it's game over.
10:12Game over, lights out.
10:14Looking, looking,
10:15throwing,
10:16it is caught
10:16down at the 12-yard line.
10:18First down, Ohio State.
10:20I was supposed to be
10:21under the receiver,
10:22but on that particular play,
10:24I got head up with the receiver
10:25instead of staying under.
10:27Fourth and 14.
10:28Are you kidding me?
10:30Six plays
10:31and one memorable penalty later,
10:33Ohio State tied the game
10:34and forced a second overtime.
10:36Miami will always point
10:38to the referee's flag.
10:40They allowed Ohio State
10:41to convert.
10:42Team, you expect,
10:43you know,
10:43the mighty Hurricanes
10:44to stop us,
10:45but they couldn't do it.
10:46How can you blame a referee
10:47for giving up
10:48a fourth down long like that
10:49in that type of situation
10:51with that much on the lines?
10:52That's really inexcusable.
10:54With reason number five
10:56in the books,
10:56let's take a look
10:57at reason number four.
10:59Will Allen.
11:01The Buckeyes' safety
11:02dealt Miami a critical blow.
11:05All night long,
11:06as you're watching that game,
11:07you're waiting for Miami
11:08to get Willis McGahee on track.
11:10In the second half,
11:11he was ripping off yards.
11:13That running game was going.
11:14Willis has it.
11:15Right side 30.
11:16Still going 25 to the 20.
11:17Still on his feet.
11:18It's right down.
11:19He scored a touchdown.
11:21He had Miami
11:21right back into the game.
11:23Willis into the end zone.
11:25Touchdown, Miami.
11:26We were able to
11:27reestablish ourselves,
11:28reestablish what we do,
11:30staying balanced,
11:31pounding the run game.
11:32In the fourth quarter,
11:33with Miami trailing by three,
11:35the Hurricanes again
11:36called McGahee's number.
11:38Kenny looking to set up
11:39the screen to McGahee.
11:40We dumped it off to Willis,
11:41I think,
11:42and he made a great run
11:44out of it.
11:45That was a screen play.
11:46We have repped it
11:47all week in practice.
11:48I had a beeline on him,
11:49and I just took a great tackle,
11:51a great hit.
11:52At the 40-yard line,
11:54tries to break a tackle,
11:54and he's brought down.
11:55They threw me the ball,
11:56and the minute I turned around,
11:57he was right there in my face,
12:00and he just went low.
12:01Will Allen and C. Grant,
12:03and McGahee is down.
12:04He sort of came in
12:05low and fast,
12:06like a bullet.
12:07I didn't see
12:08where he hit,
12:09but I just heard this big,
12:10you know,
12:11boom.
12:11boom.
12:12Oh, my goodness.
12:13Oh, Lord.
12:15That is a serious knee injury
12:17for Willis McGahee.
12:19He got up,
12:19I saw how his leg
12:20was dangling around.
12:21I was like,
12:22oh, my goodness,
12:22his knee is really messed up.
12:24Miami found
12:25its number one weapon.
12:26Two torn knee ligaments,
12:28Miami's offense sputtered.
12:30They couldn't run the ball
12:31the way they had
12:32with Willis in there.
12:33They just did not have
12:34the same running thread.
12:35Good thing.
12:36Bouncing into the middle
12:38and stopped
12:38after maybe a yard.
12:41Miami felt McGahee's absence
12:43most deeply
12:44when it mattered the most
12:45with the game on the line.
12:47In the second overtime,
12:49they put the ball
12:49on the two-yard line.
12:51You had four downs
12:52to try and make two yards
12:53and send it into triple
12:54at the time.
12:55Quad Hill straight ahead.
12:57He did not get in.
12:58They kept trying to run it,
12:59so they couldn't get anything,
13:00so I kind of knew
13:01they was going to try to pass it.
13:03Looking to throw,
13:03no blitzes on.
13:05It's got to be.
13:05Throws in zone.
13:06Knocked away.
13:07It's all over.
13:08The game's on the line.
13:09It's time to go in.
13:10If Willis had been there,
13:11it could have been
13:11a different story.
13:12Having Willis in there,
13:13you know,
13:14I mean,
13:15it's no doubt about it,
13:16you know,
13:16we definitely would have
13:17punched it in and scored.
13:21Mighty Moe,
13:21freshman sensation
13:23Maurice Claret,
13:24who averaged 119 yards rushing,
13:26powered the Buckeyes offense.
13:28Claret,
13:29at that time,
13:31was at the peak of his life.
13:33Claret to the middle,
13:35sloshes free,
13:3630,
13:36the difference maker.
13:38The way that he was able
13:39to make big plays,
13:41the way he was able
13:42to make people miss.
13:44Here comes Ohio State,
13:45muscle,
13:46Claret for the touchdown,
13:47did he get there?
13:48Yes!
13:50It's almost like playing a video game.
13:51I would see a hole
13:52and I'd think to myself,
13:53you know,
13:53Maurice go there,
13:54cut there.
13:55Almost every time he did.
13:57Although he rushed
13:58for only a paltry 47 yards
14:00in the Fiesta Bowl,
14:02Claret scored two
14:03of the Buckeyes' four touchdowns,
14:04including the game winner.
14:07Claret,
14:08touchdown!
14:10But Claret's biggest contribution
14:12came in the third quarter,
14:13on the other side of the ball.
14:16Turns it,
14:17keeps it.
14:17Ohio State had just gotten
14:18a turnover
14:19and they were ready to score.
14:21Throws it to the end zone
14:22and it is picked off
14:24by Sean Taylor.
14:25Sean Taylor,
14:26who is about as majestic
14:27an athlete
14:28as Miami has had
14:29come through its doors,
14:31gets caught from behind.
14:33And then we just see
14:33just 13 running out of nowhere
14:35and take the ball.
14:36He was stripped
14:37of the football, Joe!
14:38Claret got it!
14:39They kept Ohio State
14:40on the field
14:41for another series,
14:43which kept the Miami offense
14:44and Willis McGaney
14:45on the sidelines.
14:46It was a big, big play.
14:48Maurice Claret
14:49with the play of the game,
14:50perhaps.
14:51Maurice comes from
14:52out of nowhere,
14:53strips the ball,
14:55gets us the ball back
14:55and we'll end up
14:56scoring a field goal.
14:58Puts the foot under it,
15:00plenty of leg on it,
15:01and it's good!
15:02That play was obviously
15:03a defining moment
15:05in the game.
15:05Finally their play came
15:07and for one of our guys
15:08to step up
15:08and make a play
15:09better than theirs
15:10that changed the whole game.
15:15Three strong reasons
15:16in the books.
15:18Numerology.
15:19What?
15:22Numerology is the science
15:24of numbers,
15:24the wisdom of numbers
15:26and how you would apply
15:27those to your life.
15:28The numbers don't lie.
15:30In four trips
15:31to the Fiesta Bowl,
15:32Miami is 0-4.
15:35You look at their history
15:37in the Fiesta Bowl,
15:38tell me one thing
15:39that's gone right for them,
15:40nothing.
15:40It began in 1987.
15:43The Canes fell
15:44in the national championship
15:45against Penn State
15:46with quarterback
15:47Vinny Testaverde
15:48throwing five interceptions.
15:50For whatever reason
15:51that he threw
15:53those five interceptions,
15:54you know,
15:55only Vinny knows.
15:57Late in the game,
15:58down near the goal line,
15:59we still had a chance
16:00to win that game.
16:02Back goes Testaverde,
16:03trying to win it.
16:04Throws into the end zone,
16:05it's intercepted again.
16:08Oh.
16:09Number one after that.
16:11Wide open.
16:12I need to throw
16:13me that ball.
16:15In 2003,
16:16the numbers struck again.
16:18This time,
16:19it was unlucky 13.
16:21Triska dekaphobia
16:22is the fear of 13,
16:24the actual clinical condition.
16:26They say that
16:27once you pronounce it,
16:28you're cured.
16:29Ohio State was ranked
16:3013th in the nation
16:31going into the season.
16:33Its star freshman
16:34running back
16:34was number 13,
16:36Maurice Claret.
16:37Insel,
16:38repeated to Claret,
16:39moving right side
16:40inside the five,
16:40pushing into the end zone,
16:42Maurice Claret.
16:42They had 13 seniors.
16:44They were 13-0
16:45going in.
16:47I wouldn't think 13
16:47would be a lucky number,
16:49but it definitely
16:50worked for us.
16:51And it worked
16:52against Miami.
16:54Add up Willis McGahee's
16:55number two
16:56with Ken Dorsey's
16:57number 11,
16:58and the total is 13.
17:00Dorsey committed
17:01three turnovers,
17:02while McGahee
17:03left the game
17:03on a stretcher.
17:05The number 13
17:06was unlucky
17:06in a number of counts
17:07for Miami.
17:08There's a lot of
17:09eerie things about that game,
17:10to be perfectly honest with you.
17:12It's kind of ironic
17:12all those numbers
17:13that end up together
17:14like that,
17:15but we're just glad
17:16we got that 14th win.
17:19Hang on,
17:20Sloopy.
17:20Since 1965,
17:22the number one hit
17:23by the McCoys,
17:24has been the rallying cry
17:25for Ohio State football.
17:27Everyone knows the song,
17:29even freshmen
17:30that just came
17:31to Ohio State.
17:32When Hang on,
17:32Sloopy comes on,
17:33it's an exciting time
17:34for our fans
17:34and our players.
17:35We swing into the song
17:37Hang on,
17:37Sloopy,
17:38the whole stadium
17:38comes alive.
17:43The lyrics,
17:44Sloopy Hang on,
17:45came to symbolize
17:46the Buckeyes'
17:47magical season,
17:48during which Ohio State
17:49won six games
17:50by seven points
17:52or fewer.
17:52It had been magical.
17:54We had won games
17:54and then we
17:55weren't supposed to.
17:57The Cincinnati game
17:58early in the year,
17:59the Bearcats
18:00had four chances
18:01to win the game
18:01inside the 20-yard line.
18:03Cadouli with time
18:04into the end zone.
18:05One down
18:06and intercepted.
18:07The Illinois game,
18:08Ohio State,
18:09had never played
18:10in an overtime game.
18:15The Buckeyes
18:17stay unbeaten.
18:18We managed to
18:19hang on all year
18:20and stay in game.
18:21In the Buckeyes'
18:2211th game,
18:23their perfect record
18:24was almost ruined
18:25at Purdue.
18:26It was fourth and one.
18:28There was a minute
18:29and 30-something seconds
18:30left on the clock
18:31and we were trailing.
18:34Prinsley's gonna throw
18:35for it.
18:36Gotta get him off.
18:37It was like one
18:37of those scenes
18:38in a movie
18:38where the ball
18:39just spinning.
18:40It's taking forever
18:40to come down.
18:41They go for the ball game.
18:43Touchdown!
18:45Touchdown!
18:46Jacobs!
18:47On that day,
18:48Purdue was better
18:49and Ohio State won.
18:51And that was sort of
18:52a microcosm
18:53of the season.
18:54Against Miami,
18:55Ohio State.
18:56About time we got
18:57to the national championship
18:58game against Miami,
18:59we knew exactly
19:01what we were getting
19:01into.
19:02It was a close game.
19:03We felt like
19:04we've been through
19:05so many
19:05that we could
19:06easily win it.
19:07In overtime,
19:08the Buckeyes again
19:09found a way
19:10to stay alive.
19:11Scoring on a
19:12Craig Krenzel sneak
19:13just three plays
19:14after the controversial
19:15call.
19:16It wasn't like
19:17that was the call
19:18that ended the game.
19:20Both teams still
19:21had to go into
19:21second overtime
19:22and score
19:23and play.
19:24It was kind of
19:25a tough call
19:26to swallow,
19:26but we still had
19:27to go out
19:28and play football.
19:29With Miami driving
19:31in the second overtime,
19:32the Ohio State
19:33marching band,
19:34as it had all season
19:35in crucial spots,
19:36struck up a familiar
19:37tune,
19:38Hang On Sloopy.
19:39Everything was
19:40on the line.
19:41That was just
19:41the right song
19:42and the right atmosphere.
19:44We're hanging on
19:45by the skin of our teeth
19:46as they're driving
19:46down on us.
19:47Dorsey turns,
19:48play fake,
19:49looking for Winston
19:50too far!
19:51I'm sure the band
19:52was thinking,
19:53please Lord,
19:54hang on to this game.
19:55A stop
19:56and the Buckeyes
19:57are national champions.
19:59We had a great opportunity
20:01to win that game
20:01and we just couldn't do it.
20:03Looking to throw,
20:04blitz is on,
20:05they've got it,
20:05he throws,
20:06end zone,
20:06knocked away,
20:07Ohio State wins
20:08the national championship.
20:10It was up
20:11to us to stop Miami
20:12so we just hung in there
20:13and we just beat them.
20:16You can't blame
20:17the officials
20:17because regardless
20:18of what happens,
20:20everyone knows
20:21that Ohio State
20:22will never get up.
20:23Ohio State
20:23will always hang on
20:24to win those games.
20:32Well,
20:32there you have it
20:33the top five reasons.
20:39Well,
20:39there you have it
20:40the top five reasons
20:41you can't blame
20:41the officials
20:42for Miami failing
20:43to win its second
20:44straight national title.
20:45Six months
20:46after the game,
20:47the Big 12 agreed
20:48that Terry Porter
20:49made the right call.
20:50But to many
20:51of the Miami faithful,
20:52Porter took nearly
20:53that long
20:53to throw
20:54the faithful flag.
20:55I'm Brian
20:56and I'm Brian
20:56and I'm Brian
