00:00Trump says a peace deal could be days away, but U.S. warplanes hit Iran again after Tehran shoots down
00:07an American helicopter.
00:09Plus, the primary is over. The real fight starts now.
00:12Graham Plattner wins big in Maine and sets up a high-stakes Senate battle this fall.
00:17And the U.S. is finally catching up on sunscreen.
00:21The FDA approves the new ingredients that could offer better protection just as the summer heats up.
00:28The stories that matter, clear and credible, from across the country to around the world.
00:34These are your unbiased updates from Straight Arrow News.
00:40Good morning, I'm Craig DeGrelli.
00:42This morning, Iran is reassessing its path to peace talks with the United States after another night of military escalation
00:49across the region.
00:50Iranian officials say they need time to evaluate their relationship with Washington before moving forward with negotiations.
00:57A potential setback after President Trump said a peace deal could be reached within days.
01:02That comes after U.S. strikes ordered by Trump in response to the downing of an American military helicopter.
01:09Iranian officials say the strikes hit two water storage facilities in southern Iran.
01:14Meanwhile, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps says it launched attacks targeting American bases across the region.
01:22Bahrain's military says it confronted, intercepted, and destroyed multiple aerial threats.
01:28Officials in Jordan say they shot down five missiles, while Kuwait reported intercepting what it called hostile aerial targets.
01:36Iran has not claimed responsibility for shooting down the American helicopter.
01:40Tehran accused the United States of acting under, quote, a false pretext and warned that any further U.S. attacks
01:48would be met with what it called devastating and more wide-ranging strikes.
01:52Despite the latest exchange, President Trump has maintained that efforts to reach a peace agreement remain on track.
01:59To politics now, several states held primary elections Tuesday, but all eyes were on Maine, where one of the most
02:06closely watched Senate races in the country is now set for November.
02:10The results were expected.
02:12Incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins won her party's nomination, while Democrat Graham Plattner secured his.
02:19But the win still marked a major test for Plattner, who has spent weeks trying to move past allegations that
02:26he exchanged sexually explicit messages with multiple women while married.
02:30In his victory speech, Plattner acknowledged those controversies and told supporters he knows he still must rebuild their trust.
02:37And to any of those who feel let down or disappointed or disillusioned, it is my job to earn your
02:46trust, faith, and support.
02:48And I will spend every day of this campaign, and if I have the privilege, every day in the United
02:55States Senate, doing exactly that.
02:59Meanwhile, in South Carolina, Trump-backed Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evitt is headed to a June 23rd runoff against Attorney General
03:07Allen Wilson, after no candidate won a majority in the five-way Republican field.
03:12Another Trump-backed candidate, Senator Lindsey Graham, easily won his party's nomination.
03:17Democratic Congressman James Clyburn also cruised to victory in his primary.
03:22In Nevada, the Republican primary between retired Lieutenant Colonel David Filippo and former state Senator James Settlemyer remains too close
03:30to call.
03:31Same topic now, politics.
03:33California's race for governor is now officially set, and it's shaping up as a high-profile clash between a former
03:40Biden cabinet secretary and a Trump-backed former Fox News host.
03:44After a week of ballot counting, the Associated Press projects Republican Steve Hilton has locked up the second spot in
03:52California's top two primary.
03:54That sets up a November showdown with Democrat Xavier Becerra, the former U.S. health secretary, California attorney general, and
04:01longtime congressman who finished first in the primary.
04:04Hilton is a former advisor to British Prime Minister David Cameron.
04:09Hilton later was a Fox News host.
04:11He moved to California in 2012 and became a U.S. citizen in 2021.
04:15A win would make him California's first Republican governor in more than 15 years.
04:21Becerra is running on his experience in state and federal government, while promising to push back against President Trump's policies
04:28and tackle issues including insurance and utility costs.
04:32Hilton heads into the fall as the clear underdog.
04:35Democrats hold nearly a two-to-one voter registration advantage in California, and no Republican has won the governor's mansion
04:42since Arnold Schwarzenegger left office in 2011.
04:46This morning, President Trump is about to get a major win on one of his top priorities.
04:51The House has narrowly passed a bill that pours nearly $70 billion into immigration enforcement and border security, sending it
05:00to the president's desk for his signature.
05:02The measure passed 214 to 212 on a nearly party-line vote.
05:06It would lock in funding for ICE and Border Patrol through the remainder of Trump's term.
05:12The White House says the package includes $38 billion for ICE, $26 billion for Border Patrol, and billions more for
05:19operational costs.
05:21Republicans, including Speaker Mike Johnson, say the bill ensures the administration has the resources it needs to carry out its
05:28deportation agenda without having to return to Congress year after year.
05:32There is not a Democrat here who voted to support that, but what we've done now by funding it for
05:38three years is we've taken away their ability to cut that funding, to block that funding, or to take hostage
05:44the funding for the remainder of the Trump administration.
05:47Democrats fought the bill from start to finish, arguing it adds tens of billions of dollars to ICE and border
05:54enforcement without new oversight or reforms.
05:57Congresswoman Pramala Jayapal called it a $70 billion slush fund to the lawless and unaccountable agencies of ICE and CBP,
06:06with zero reforms.
06:08The bill now heads to the White House, where Trump will sign it later today.
06:12When it comes to sunscreen, the U.S. has been playing catch-up.
06:16That may be about to change.
06:18The FDA has approved the first new sunscreen ingredient for the American market in more than 25 years.
06:24It's called BAMOTRISONOL, and it's already been used for decades in Europe, Japan, and South Korea.
06:32Experts say the ingredient offers strong protection against both UVA and UVB rays, the types of sun exposure linked to
06:40sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer.
06:43Unlike many mineral-based sunscreens, it also does not leave the chalky white residue that some users complain about.
06:50The FDA says the ingredient showed little absorption into the body and is safe for adults and children six months
06:57and older.
06:58Supporters say Americans have been waiting years for access to the same sunscreen technology currently available in much of the
07:05world.
07:06Products containing the new ingredient are expected to hit store shelves in the U.S. later this year.
07:12Finally this morning, just two months after NASA's Artemis II crew completed a record-setting trip around the moon,
07:19the space agency is already looking ahead to its next major test flight.
07:24NASA has officially named the four astronauts who will fly on the Artemis III mission in 2027.
07:30Retired Marine Colonel Randy Bresnik will command the mission.
07:34Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano will serve as pilot.
07:37NASA astronaut Frank Rubio, a former Army helicopter pilot, joins the crew, along with Andre Douglas, who will be making
07:45his first trip to space.
07:46The mission won't head to the moon.
07:48Instead, the crew will remain in Earth's orbit, practicing the complex docking maneuvers that NASA says will be critical for
07:55future lunar landing missions.
07:58We are certainly humbled as a crew to be able to be your crew that executes this Artemis III mission
08:05in space.
08:06Being that unifying link between the phenomenal Artemis II mission we just had two months ago and the Artemis IV
08:13mission that will follow ours.
08:15Pretty neat moment at yesterday's event in Houston, Texas, as astronauts from Artemis II pass the baton to their successors.
08:22How cool is that?
08:23NASA says the flight is another key step in its plan to return astronauts to the moon later this decade
08:28and eventually establish a long-term human presence there.
08:33A lot to look forward to.
08:35All right, before we head out, here's what we're tracking today.
08:37First, Bill Gates is expected to sit for a closed-door interview with House investigators as part of Congress's Jeffrey
08:43Epstein probe.
08:44Then at the White House, President Trump will sign the Secure America Act,
08:48that $70 billion bill that locks in funding for ICE and Border Patrol through 2029.
08:54And later this afternoon, the president will meet with finalists for the Presidential 1776 Award,
09:00part of the administration's effort to promote civics and patriotism ahead of America's 250th birthday celebration.
