00:43Every decision I've taken has been about putting the country I love first.
00:49That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party.
00:54Britain is headed for another change in leadership.
00:57After months of political pressure and a devastating round of local election losses, Prime Minister Keir Starmer says he's stepping
01:05down as leader of the governing Labour Party.
01:07Good morning, I'm Craig DeGrelli.
01:09We begin with breaking news out of the United Kingdom this morning.
01:12Keir Starmer's resignation sets off a scramble to replace him and puts Britain on track for its seventh prime minister
01:19in just ten years.
01:20Starmer made the announcement outside 10 Downing Street, saying he will remain prime minister until Labour chooses a new leader.
01:27I will ask the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party to set out a timetable with nominations opening on
01:34the 9th of July and completed by the summer recess.
01:39In the case of a contest, this will ensure a new leader is in place before Parliament returns in September.
01:46The decision follows a brutal spring for Labour.
01:50The party lost more than 1,000 local council seats in May and lost control of the Welsh Parliament.
01:56No candidate has formally entered the race, but much of the attention is already focused on Andy Burnham.
02:02The former mayor of Greater Manchester is set to be sworn into Parliament today after winning a special election last
02:08week.
02:09A victory that immediately fueled talk that he could be Labour's next leader and Britain's next prime minister.
02:16Top U.S. and Iranian officials have wrapped up their latest round of peace talks in Switzerland this morning,
02:22after a weekend that nearly sent the negotiations off the rails.
02:26Those negotiations hit an early snag Sunday after President Trump warned he could order new strikes on Iran if Hezbollah
02:34did not stop causing trouble.
02:35Iran responded by temporarily pausing the talks.
02:39Its chief negotiator, speaking as Vice President J.D. Vance led the U.S. allegation,
02:44warned American officials to, quote, be careful with their statements,
02:48and said Iran was prepared to respond to any attack.
02:51But by Monday, both sides were back at the table.
02:54Mediators said the discussions produced encouraging progress, though no specific breakthroughs were announced.
02:59Iran's foreign minister said U.S. sanctions on Iranian oil have been waived,
03:04some frozen assets have been released, and, quote,
03:08a major reconstruction and development plan is now underway.
03:12Pakistan and Qatar, which have helped broker the talks,
03:15said the two countries also agreed to create a high-level committee
03:18to oversee future negotiations on Iran's nuclear program,
03:23sanctions relief, and other parts of the peace agreement.
03:25A Trump-backed political outsider appears to be headed to the presidency in Colombia,
03:31but his narrow victory is already triggering protests and expected legal challenges.
03:36Violent demonstrations broke out across Colombia after preliminary results showed
03:41conservative lawyer Abelardo de la Espriera with a slim lead in the presidential runoff.
03:47The result is expected to face challenges from allies of the current government in the days ahead.
03:52De la Espriera has never held elected office.
03:56The dual U.S.-Colombian citizen ran on a tough-on-crime platform
04:00and has promised to build 10 mega-prisons modeled after El Salvador's notorious CICOT facility.
04:06President Trump, who endorsed him earlier this month, celebrated the result on social media.
04:12Secretary of State Marco Rubio also praised the outcome,
04:15saying the Trump administration looks forward to working with de la Espriera's government
04:19if the result stands.
04:21Nearly a week after a massive warehouse fire erupted in East Los Angeles,
04:26firefighters say they're finally gaining ground.
04:29But this fight is far from over.
04:31Crews spent the weekend battling hot spots inside a half-a-million-square-foot cold storage facility
04:37in Boyle Heights, using helicopters, water cannons, and excavators to tear into the building
04:42and reach flames buried deep inside.
04:44Fire officials say they've now confined the blaze to one side of the structure,
04:49but expect smoke to continue pouring from the site for at least the next few days.
04:54The building store, get this, about 85 million pounds of frozen food.
05:00And a new concern is now emerging.
05:02With refrigeration shutdown, much of that food is thawing, raising fears of a potential biohazard
05:09as crews figure out how to remove it safely.
05:12Over the weekend, Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass declared states of emergency,
05:18freeing up additional resources as air quality alerts remain in effect across parts of Los Angeles County.
05:24The good news this morning?
05:26No firefighters or civilians have been injured.
05:29The bad news?
05:30Officials warn this fire could take days or even weeks to fully extinguish.
05:34In Washington, the troubles at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool are not going away,
05:40and now federal prosecutors are getting involved.
05:43In a Truth Social post Sunday, the president said repairs will begin immediately
05:48on what he called a seriously vandalized reflecting pool.
05:52That's the same pool that reopened just weeks ago after a nearly $15 million renovation,
05:57only to develop a major algae bloom and a new problem.
06:01Sections of its blue lining peeling off and floating in the water.
06:06Workers spent much of last week cleaning the pool,
06:09treating the algae, and trying to keep the new surface intact.
06:12Trump now says contractors may have to drain part of the pool to make repairs.
06:17He has also claimed, without providing evidence,
06:20that vandals damage the project with chemicals and other acts of sabotage.
06:25In an interview on Fox News Sunday, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said
06:30anyone who might have done so will face criminal charges.
06:34Anyone who is in a position of vandalizing or attempting to vandalize the reflecting pool
06:41will face the criminal justice system in D.C.
06:44Look, the president has made it a priority to make D.C. not only safe but beautiful.
06:49And there are several citations that have been handed out to individuals,
06:53and these are cases that will be prosecuted to the full extent.
06:57One of those people charged is David Hearn, a 67-year-old cyclist and three-time Olympian.
07:03He was arrested Friday after stopping to look at a partially detached section of the liner.
07:09Hearn denies damaging the pool and told the Washington Post he only touched a piece that was already peeling.
07:15Finally this morning, a historic night for Egypt at the World Cup.
07:20And once again, Mohamed Salah was right in the middle of it.
07:23Salah scored the go-ahead goal Sunday night as Egypt defeated New Zealand 3-1 in Vancouver,
07:29securing the country's first-ever World Cup victory.
07:32The sellout crowd erupted as the Liverpool star notched his 68th international goal
07:38and was swarmed by teammates after the final whistle.
07:40The win moves Egypt to the top of Group G
07:43and puts the pharaohs in position to reach the knockout round.
07:47A win, or even a draw against Iran on Friday, would send Egypt through.
07:51The United States has already clinched a spot in the knockout stage
07:55after its 2-0 win over Australia in Seattle on Friday.
07:59Coming up today, a mix of courtrooms and more World Cup action.
08:02At 11 Eastern, attorney Ben Crump joins the family of a one-year-old Mississippi boy
08:07who was shot by police during a response to a shoplifting call.
08:10That same hour in Los Angeles,
08:12a man accused of fatally stabbing actor James Handy returns to court
08:16as a judge weighs questions about his mental competency.
08:20At 1, World Cup group play continues across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
08:24And later today in Utah, a judge is set to decide
08:27whether prosecutors should be held in contempt
08:30over prosecutor comments about the bullet that killed Charlie Kirk.
