00:00But the NBA Draft Lottery is coming up, and the Wizards have the number one pick.
00:05And there seems to be more and more Wizards news.
00:08A little buzz, I feel like, with the Wizards.
00:13And part of the reason is they made a couple trades.
00:17Anthony Davis and Trey Young last year.
00:19Trey Young just appeared in 15 total games last season, five with the Washington Wizards.
00:25But you've got to see a little bit of what he could do on the court.
00:30I thought it was super exciting when he was on the court.
00:31And the crowd was responding every time.
00:34The crowd is definitely into him.
00:35The crowd is definitely jacked for him.
00:38I've just been so thrilled with him, just with how he's embraced the city from day one, from the moment
00:44he's been here.
00:44And if they would have seen Anthony Davis with Trey Young, they would have been even more excited.
00:48But I've even seen Anthony Davis, who everyone assumes is just here for a minute.
00:52And that's probably true.
00:54I've even heard him say, talking about our team and we're young.
00:59And, you know, I see him say things embracing the team, too.
01:04It's not all, I can't wait to get out of here.
01:06In fact, I think he doesn't really say that publicly.
01:08No, I think he's keeping that behind the scenes.
01:10That's smart that he does.
01:11But Trey Young went on The Pivot, which is Ryan Clark's podcast.
01:16And here's what he said about doubters.
01:19I've learned over the years, there's a lot of recency bias that goes on.
01:23And especially in media.
01:25And, I mean, I got a podcast, too.
01:27So I'm not just throwing y'all into all the media.
01:29I know what you do.
01:31But, like, I know there's a lot of recency bias that goes in the media.
01:35And I know if we start winning, imagine the Wizards as the number one team in the East next year.
01:40What people are going to be saying.
01:42So it's just like, I can't get caught up in what people are saying now.
01:47As mad as it makes me and what people say about me is not true.
01:52And, yes, I haven't played very much in a year and a half because of some injuries and the trade
01:57and things like that.
01:58But, trust me, I'm not even, I'm probably just entering my prime.
02:03Like, the way people talk about me is just funny.
02:07And I just can't wait to go out there and play.
02:09And I know that that's what changes the narrative.
02:12I don't, so I can't necessarily get caught up in what people think right now.
02:15I got to go out there and do it again.
02:17I like that he has a chip.
02:19He's got like an axe to drive.
02:20I love that.
02:20Love to hear that.
02:21Totally.
02:23I love it.
02:24Gets me excited as a Wizards fan.
02:25I didn't care about Trae Young at all until he got here.
02:29Of course.
02:29And now I care.
02:30I'm a huge fan.
02:31Big ice Trae guy?
02:33Sure.
02:34I'm a big Trae Young fan.
02:36I really, really like the way he's embraced it all.
02:39And, you know, I know he's trying to encourage AD.
02:42And I think he will be a good influence on the young players.
02:46Talking about possibly number one in the Eastern Conference?
02:49I mean, that's.
02:51I can't imagine that.
02:51It's a little bit of a stretch.
02:53I can't imagine that in one year.
02:54He's excited.
02:54He's being very positive.
02:55Just imagine this starting five if this is the way it goes.
02:59Trae and Keyshawn at your backcourt.
03:03Let's just say they draft DeBansa.
03:04It could be Peterson, but let's just go with DeBansa for this argument.
03:07You're not going Trae squared in the backcourt?
03:09I'm going to go Keyshawn, I think.
03:11Okay.
03:12I mean, maybe.
03:13Who knows?
03:13See if he beats him out.
03:15So DeBansa and Davis at forwards and Saar at your center.
03:20I like it.
03:21A lot of good.
03:22I like the makings of that.
03:24A lot of good defensive stops there.
03:26It's funny.
03:26No one's really talking about Alex Saar.
03:29Everyone's talking about whoever they draft number one.
03:32They're talking about Trae and Davis.
03:34No one's really talking about Saar.
03:36What if Saar just leaps ahead of a lot of these guys and just becomes really, really good next year?
03:43Like, I'm expecting him to be a 20-10 guy next year.
03:46Maybe even more.
03:47Like, that's what he should develop into.
03:49What if he averages 23 a game next year?
03:51Well, it's hard to imagine because he wasn't really drafted for that.
03:54I know.
03:54But maybe he's getting better.
03:56But he did have a pretty big leap, I thought, from year one to year two.
03:59He just missed so many games.
04:01I know.
04:02That's the problem.
04:03A lot of that was by design.
04:04I understand.
04:05I'm not going to hold that against him.
04:07To answer his question of why aren't people talking about him, it's hard to get super excited about a guy
04:13who's playing on the worst team in the NBA with the worst record, that earned the number one pick, that
04:19played in a little more than half the games.
04:22Yep.
04:22And he only played in 50 games.
04:23But I don't know.
04:24I just feel like no one's talking.
04:25He was the number two pick.
04:26Yeah.
04:27I understand Jason's point.
04:28He's the number two overall pick.
04:30They were building around him.
04:31And now, all of a sudden, it's all about building it around whoever they draft.
04:35But I don't think he'll ever do it.
04:36He'll never be the number one offensive dog.
04:39That's okay.
04:39If they draft DeBonta, he's the number one guy.
04:42If they draft Peterson, he's the number one guy.
04:44Saar's going to be a good, solid number two.
04:46I don't think DeBonta's going to be the number one guy day one.
04:48I think he's going to be number two or number three.
04:51I'm good with him being a 20 and 10 and two and a half blocks per game guy.
04:54I think if they draft DeBonta, he will average more shots than Alex Saar as a rookie.
05:01I don't know about that.
05:02Not rookie versus rookie.
05:02I think DeBonta will take more shots than Alex Saar.
05:05I don't know about that.
05:06I think it might be close.
05:07How many shots per game was Saar at?
05:08I'm going to guess about 14.
05:10How many did he average?
05:11Yeah.
05:13Let me go back and see.
05:13When he played.
05:15DeBonta's not always that way.
05:16He took, yeah, 14.
05:17When he was with the national team, he had a lesser role.
05:20He was the MVP of the national team.
05:22But he, you know, he averaged like 14.
05:25He played more of a team-oriented role.
05:29He didn't play the alpha number one role.
05:31I get it.
05:32But he was the number one scorer in college basketball.
05:34Yeah.
05:35Yeah.
05:35I don't know.
05:36There was just stretches.
05:37I think he'll be expected.
05:38Maybe not with Trey Young and Anthony Davis playing if they both play.
05:42But I think that ultimately he'll be expected to be the number one scorer on the team.
05:46There were just stretches where Saar last year where he was putting up some numbers.
05:51Yeah.
05:51I know.
05:51I was impressed by his offensive growth.
05:54Now, maybe you could say, look, they weren't playing defense.
05:57They were tanking, tank-a-thon.
05:59That's all true.
05:59But offensively, he had a few games where he'd say, whoa.
06:04We didn't see this as rookie year.
06:06He has the potential.
06:08Well, I saw flashes.
06:08I saw flashes as rookie year.
06:10He has the potential.
06:10And if they run, you know, pick and roll with Trey Young, Saar's really good in that action.
06:17In November of this past season, he averaged 19 and a half points, eight and a half boards, three assists
06:24per game, two get-out-of-hiers.
06:27Yeah.
06:28Like, that's what you want to see, like, every month in year three.
06:32It's good.
06:32I just always am a little skeptical about guys putting up numbers on bad teams.
06:36Okay.
06:37Because somebody's got to put up the numbers.
06:39True.
06:39Like, Michael Porter Jr. got traded from the Nuggets and was with the Nets this year.
06:43And I want to say he was averaging right around 25 points per game.
06:46Well, somebody did.
06:47I listened to a pod yesterday.
06:48I just listened to so many different pods.
06:51Because I wish I could tell you who the analyst was.
06:53Have you listened to Trey Young's pod?
06:54That was news to me that he's got a podcast.
06:56You'll have to check it out.
06:56But I wish I could remember which analyst it was.
06:59But a guy that did point out, and he is pro-DeBansa.
07:03So it was one of those pods where they had one guy wanted DeBansa, and one guy wanted Peterson.
07:08They were actually national guys.
07:09I think they were from CBS.
07:11And he said the one thing he worries about with DeBansa is that, is his floor a good player on
07:20a bad team?
07:21Because he did win with the national team, but he's never really won anywhere, and it's kind of been his
07:26thing, is to be the best player on a bad team.
07:30And then with the Wizards, who've been a bad team for so long, they haven't proven yet that they know
07:35how to win.
07:38Just hope that that's not, then that's the floor.
07:40That's not the ceiling.
07:41But the floor would be, he's just a good player on a bad team.
07:44On a side note, why was Matt Valdez weight-shaming A.J. DeBansa for pressing 15-pound dumbbells in his
07:52workout video?
07:53I wasn't weight-shaming.
07:54I just, I asked a question if those were 15-pounders or not.
07:57I thought you were just weight-shaming.
07:58I didn't see the video.
07:59Is that the video that they put out, the 16-minute video?
08:02It was like a compilation.
08:04Oh, when he was just working out?
08:05I think it was like overtime.
08:07I did it.
08:08Where he was working out, they're talking about how many calories, his new caloric intake for the day.
08:13It was like 5,000, tried to bulk up.
08:16He was inclined pressing 15-pound dumbbells.
08:20He's got long arms, it's not his thing.
08:21Oh, okay.
08:22He's got long arms.
08:23I mean, do you think Kevin Durant lifts much more than that?
08:26He's a damn good player.
08:27I'm sure he can.
08:27Yeah, okay.
08:28I'm sure he can.
08:29But they don't have to.
08:30But he's raised an eyebrow.
08:32Okay.
08:32Okay.
08:33First off, he's such a lunk and makes everyone feel terrible about themselves.
08:37I'm watching the video.
08:38First off, it says 15 kilograms.
08:42Okay.
08:42Not 15 pounds.
08:44Okay.
08:44So it's close to 35.
08:45That's close to 35 pounds or something like that.
08:47All right.
08:48That's a little more respectable.
08:49And I think it was a warm-up because he's doing lunges with those same weights and everything.
08:53Yeah.
08:54Look, he's not trying to enter the Mr. Olympia.
08:57He's trying to get stronger.
08:58Or should he be?
08:59If Aldi loves to weight shame, I made an observation.
09:03Yeah.
09:03I made an observation.
09:04I did read an article a few days ago that said that they believe the Wizards are doing
09:11a deep dive on Darren Peterson.
09:14They should be.
09:14I know that.
09:15They should be doing a deep dive on anybody they're considering drafting.
09:18They're 100%.
09:19By the way, I also heard a guy say he talked to an NBA executive.
09:23I heard a guy say this yesterday who said he'd be terrified to have to make this decision.
09:28Right.
09:28And that's exactly how I feel.
09:30Because I, believe it or not, I'm actually on the golf course and I'm talking to my buddies.
09:33Who would you take?
09:34And I rarely do that.
09:36Are they all over the place?
09:36I rarely do that.
09:37You're picking up brains?
09:38It's in my brain.
09:39I can't get over it in my brain.
09:41Who would I take?
09:42Who would I take?
09:42I think I would take Peterson.
09:44But I think DeBonson's going to be a beast, too.
09:46In my brain, I can't get it out of my head.
09:48I am obsessed with this pick.
09:49I wouldn't be surprised by either pick.
09:52I am.
09:53I'm just sticking with DeBonson because that's...
09:55What about Boozer?
09:56What about the wild card of Boozer being the pick?
09:58I just don't think they're going to take Boozer.
10:00I think Boozer's going to be very good.
10:01I just don't think they're going to take Boozer.
10:03I think Boozer's just not necessarily creative enough on his own.
10:07I think he's going to be really, really good.
10:09I just don't think that they have him number one on their board.
10:12Tim Bontemps, who we have on the show from ESPN, pretty plugged in guy.
10:15Yeah, what did he say?
10:17Highest upside play would be to take Peterson.
10:20Okay.
10:21When Peterson is right, he's just a special three-level scorer.
10:24I think there's a higher ceiling with him.
10:26And what does he say about DeBonson?
10:28Does he like DeBonson?
10:31Or is that just his pick?
10:32I think everybody likes all of them, really.
10:34Nobody has anything really negative to say about DeBonson.
10:36There's nothing negative.
10:37It kind of comes down to, do you want to roll the dice on a guy who, it seems like
10:43a lot
10:43of people say, has a higher ceiling, but because of the creatine and the missing games,
10:49there's maybe a little baggage, or do you want to go with the safer plays?
10:54I was talking to someone recently.
10:56I don't think there's nothing negative to say about AJ.
11:00That is a little concerned about AJ's being a me-me guy.
11:06All right?
11:07He said to me.
11:08With a rap song?
11:09Well, he said, first off, have you ever seen anyone do so many pre-draft interviews?
11:14Then he said, his dad gives me a concern because his dad is going to be going to the Wizards
11:21marketing team saying, put my son out there, put him on the posters, market him.
11:26AJ saying, I put butts in the seats.
11:29That's a red flag to me.
11:30I don't care about that.
11:32Who cares?
11:32To me, I don't.
11:33Why are you even saying that?
11:35Him telling Trae Young to give up his jersey number.
11:40All those things to me say that AJ loves AJ, and he may not love being a team player.
11:46Well, I don't know if I agree with that in terms of the way he plays, because I think
11:49he was a willing passer.
11:50He got everybody involved.
11:52Also, to counter it, I heard reports that he would go to the volleyball games, he would
11:59go to the football games.
12:01He embraced being a student at BYU.
12:05He wasn't just a guy that was just balling and then went to his condo or whatever and
12:09just hid from everybody.
12:10He embraced being a college student, supported his other fellow athletes.
12:14I thought that was...
12:15Well, he likes being a star.
12:17Maybe.
12:17He likes being out of public.
12:19Maybe.
12:20He likes the ADs.
12:20Listen, I think the reason why he's doing all these interviews and everything, I do think
12:23it's important he wants to be the number one pick of the draft.
12:25I think that's clear.
12:27Oh, yeah.
12:28To what extent does that help him?
12:30I don't know, but I do think he's on an A.J.
12:32DeBonsa publicity tour.
12:34No doubt about that.
12:35I agree with that.
12:36I don't know if it's a red flag.
12:37Maybe it is.
12:38Maybe it is.
12:38He didn't seem like a bad kid to me.
12:40I listened to his dad in an interview for half an hour.
12:43His dad seemed very normal.
12:46His dad is an ex-cop.
12:48I don't think the dad's a bad guy.
12:49Although, I don't think his dad needs to go to the Wizards marketing department if they
12:52want to pick him to convince them to put him all over all the marketing materials.
12:59His face is going to be on the Washington Monument.
13:01All right.
13:01Well, we'll see.
13:02I would assume.
13:03You would think that about RG3's dad, but he was a problem.
13:07Sometimes, dads are a problem.
13:09Okay.
13:09I'm not saying he is.
13:10I'm saying I've heard that.
13:12Okay.
13:12Maybe.
13:13Maybe.
13:14The biggest criticism I've heard of DeBonsa, if you want to talk about him as a player,
13:18is just that the defensive effort in college was atrocious.
13:22And that the stats...
13:24Fit right in with the Wizards.
13:25They kind of back it up.
13:26Like, defensively, didn't make it a point of emphasis at all.
13:29They know he could be a plus defender if he just gave it any effort.
13:33Now, part of that they said it was just maybe BYU and the coaching just wasn't an emphasis
13:37for them.
13:39In high school, he made more of a defensive effort.
13:43So, that's the one criticism I've seen as far as being a baller.
13:45I mean, he certainly has the athleticism and the length to be a good defensive player.
13:49Yeah, yeah.
13:49He has all the tools to be a great defender if he wants to be.
13:51And then, of course, the shooting isn't elite yet.
13:55You know, from outside.
13:56From deep.
13:57I think one thing that we've learned, and you've said this for a couple weeks, there's
14:02really not a consensus on who the best player coming out of the draft is.
14:07Yeah.
14:07Because you will hear people still mention Boozer.
14:09I saw something about Boozer, and Jason, maybe you know more about this.
14:12What?
14:13They were, like, showing clips from his high school days.
14:15Did he put on a lot of weight at Duke?
14:18I think he did.
14:20And the clips that I saw, he almost looked like more of a guard ball handler in high
14:25school than what I saw from him in college.
14:27I mean, I'm sure he did.
14:28I mean, he's a big dude.
14:30I don't know what he weighed in high school, but I'm sure he probably did put some weight
14:33on.
14:33But he, I think he's, I just would be surprised if Boozer is the number one pick.
14:39I won't be surprised if it's Bonson or Peterson.
14:42Maybe they do.
14:43I would be surprised if it's Boozer.
14:45Yeah.
14:45I would be surprised.
14:46Only because I don't feel like he's as creative.
14:49Right?
14:49If you, like, you know, maybe needs more help to get buckets, that sort of thing.
14:53I don't know.
14:54He's pretty, he was pretty efficient.
14:56He's efficient.
14:57He did a lot.
14:58He did a lot.
14:58He's efficient, but, you know, like, these other guys could.
15:00I mean, he could step out and hit the three, too.
15:02Understood.
15:03But, like, create off the dribble, like these other guys, he's not like that.
15:07Yeah, he's not the athlete that those other two guys are.
15:09Yeah.
15:10But he's a really good shooter, which he's a really good shooter.
15:12He's a great shooter.
15:13They want that.
15:14And he's a very, he's heady.
15:15He's very heady.
15:16I tell you, I have an overinflated view of them until they really screw up.
15:20I, I trust these guys.
15:23But I would be terrified to make this pick.
15:25I wouldn't want to make this pick.
15:27And I wonder, deep down, if he tells his wife, I don't know what to do.
15:32I don't know.
15:32No, there's no chance he goes home and tells his wife he doesn't know what to do with the pick.
15:36You don't think, well, listen, he knows he's going to get a, pretty sure he's going to get a great
15:40player at either one.
15:41But one might be, you know, one's probably going to be somewhat thought of as higher than the other.
15:45You don't want to butcher it.
15:47There's a lot of pressure.
15:48It's not like he's going to totally butcher it.
15:51The Wizards need to nail this pick.
15:53In the most talented, top-heavy draft, they need to get it right.
15:56There's no way of knowing today, who five years from now, is going to be basically considered the best player
16:01in this draft.
16:02And you pretty much want to make sure you get that.
16:05Right?
16:06Regardless of position.
16:07Demonts is a confident, confident guy.
16:09He was at the NBA Finals talking about Spurs.
16:11And he said, in terms of the Wizards.
16:14I mean, he's not saying the Wizards particularly, because it won't take that long, especially with my adaptability and my
16:19work ethic.
16:20I think that will be, I'm not going to say easy, but pretty similar to what these guys do in
16:25terms of the forecast.
16:26He thinks he's going to join a team, and they're going to have a Spurs-like trajectory.
16:31With young guys, all of a sudden, becoming a championship contender.
16:36Well, I do feel like the foundation is set here, where whoever they get is going to help elevate this
16:41team.
16:41Right.
16:41I think, I'm expecting a big leap.
16:44I don't know what that is, but what did we win this year?
16:4817 games?
16:49Is it 40 wins?
16:51That's a huge leap.
16:52That's a big one.
16:53I would say a minimum of a 20-game improvement.
16:55A minimum of a 20-game improvement.
16:57I would say high 30s to low 40s, if that's the starting five that we talked about.
17:03Peterson or him.
17:05Peterson or DeBonsa.
17:06I mean, if Davis is there for the most part of the year, if they trade him, and who knows
17:09what they get, all bets are off.
17:12800-636-1067 is the number we'll play.
17:15Junkie shootout for some great prizes at 745.
17:17John Keim joins us at 8 o'clock.
17:20But next, we have more audio from Brandon Ayuk.
17:24It is the summer of Brandon Ayuk.
