00:00Trista Crick with us, new hero of the Dan Levitard show, Heat Check.
00:04We go back as far as Heat Check.
00:07Yeah, TK Pucks.
00:08We go way back, and you're on my Twitter feed every morning.
00:12Are you hosting that show now?
00:14Are you replacing Levitard?
00:15What's going on, Trista?
00:17That's a great question.
00:18No, not replacing him.
00:20I think just making him feel a little more uncomfortable with all of my Trista-isms,
00:26which is, I think, a bit of a good thing and probably a bit of a bad thing.
00:31Who is on whose tree, if you'll pardon the probably wrong grammar?
00:36I don't think we deserve to have any claim to you.
00:38Your fame did not really need Buffalo visits.
00:40We did not springboard you anywhere.
00:44Can we be on your tree, though, maybe?
00:47I don't know if you can do that by asking.
00:49I'm not sure of the rules here.
00:50It's awkward now.
00:51I think I'm in your tree, yeah.
00:53I think I'm in the WGR Buffalo-Rochester tree.
00:57Also, congratulations with a massive Titan-esque level merger with Rochester.
01:04Yes.
01:05Yes.
01:06So we're on their tree, and they're on our tree.
01:08Everybody.
01:08I don't know if you can be on each other's trees.
01:11I think our ecosystem is all one tree, one world, one Earth.
01:16Let's go.
01:17I love the spirit of this.
01:18We've got to start with the finals.
01:20Lucky timing.
01:20I wanted to talk to you, and I'm sure Bulldog likewise, just to see what TV shows you're
01:24watching, although you might not have time for that anymore.
01:27But we're right in the middle of the finals.
01:29San Antonio in it, was in it, wins a close game.
01:34What do you expect from here?
01:37Oh, more excitement.
01:39I think now that we've got Wemby playing in the paint more, and we've got, you know,
01:48Steph Castle not thinking as much.
01:50We've got him going directly to the basket with force.
01:54We've got Dylan Harper doing the same.
01:56I think, you know, what you can say if you're, you know, Mitch Johnson is like, listen, we
02:00had a big lead in game one, and we blew it.
02:03And we had an opportunity to win game two, and there were some crucial mistakes where we
02:08blew that game, and now we've won game three.
02:10And so, you know, if they beat us twice at our crib, there's no situation that makes it
02:17impossible for us to take two in Madison Square Garden.
02:20Yes, there's a legacy.
02:22Yes, it's so-and-so, the most difficult place to play, one of the best home court advantages.
02:26But guess what?
02:27We just got one.
02:28Let's get a second one.
02:29Let's go back home, back with home court advantage.
02:32And so, what I expect is just more of the same adjustments, and I am very curious about
02:39how New York's offensive flow is going to go, how they make sure that Carl Anthony Towns
02:44is in the mix, and he's facilitating, how you stop Jalen Brunson from dribbling the ball
02:49a bajillion times and making it super easy for Wemby to, you know, go back to where he
02:54wants to roam instead of being forced into the corner and defending somebody else.
02:57So, yeah, I think it's going to be fascinating.
03:00That game was so critical, because otherwise I think maybe we get to a sweep, and maybe
03:05the soul gets stolen out of San Antonio, and now I feel like they know they have life.
03:11They know that they were, they take these huge leads to start the game every single time.
03:15They did it against OKC, they've done it against now New York in three straight games.
03:19It's like, just hold on to the lead.
03:22And yes, it's a game of runs, and yes, you miss shots, but if I'm the Spurs, I'm like,
03:27we have them.
03:29Plus 160 to do it.
03:30You sound like you're there.
03:32Last night, not a student of the series myself, but interesting that San Antonio is only plus
03:37two.
03:38My friend got them at one and a half even, was willing, so that seemed like a good sign
03:41for them.
03:41The game was so close, I don't know how much you can really say like that, like you knew
03:45anything, but, you know, it ended up being the right side.
03:49Yeah, you're right.
03:50And I think, like, it could have gone either way, for sure.
03:52Like, when you have that short of a number, you have to say to yourself, like, probably
03:57don't bet it.
03:58Like, it's probably time to just bet finals MVP or bet player props or, you know, bet some
04:06other sport.
04:07Because it's just, Vegas is really sharp right now.
04:11And you've gotten, you know, for example, the New York Knicks were a seven and a half
04:16point favorite over Cleveland in game one.
04:19They were down 22 with seven points to go.
04:22I mean, seven minutes to go, excuse me.
04:23And they did cover that number, which is absolutely absurd.
04:28And so, for me, at this point, this juncture, the finals are not a great place to be putting
04:35my money, except for, you know, the 35-1 Carl Anthony Towns finals MVP ticket that I recommend
04:42folks take prior to starting the finals.
04:44Interesting.
04:45Yeah, it reminds me a little bit of that story from Ken Burns Baseball Bulldog where the Mays
04:51catch, and the pitcher's name is Don Little, and Wurtz hits the ball like 500 feet, but
04:56it's an out.
04:57And the manager comes to take him out, and the pitcher says to the guy coming in, I got
05:01my man.
05:03I mean, I was right.
05:05I had the Knicks minus seven and a half in game one.
05:07I was right.
05:08Yeah, I got it.
05:09Good enough for me.
05:09Tris, I don't want to get too into the weeds on the officiating, because, you know, you've
05:13got fan bases all freaking out about this should have been a flagrant, and this shouldn't
05:16have been, and whatever.
05:17What was the deal with the substitution, that play?
05:20Like, how did you see that?
05:21Because I was watching, and it seemed like the announcers didn't know really what the
05:26heck was happening, and like, how did that all get explained if it did?
05:31It didn't.
05:32Okay.
05:32I don't think it ever did.
05:33I don't think anybody really knew what was going on.
05:36I know that they were trying to get an opportunity to have a longer period to review it, and so
05:42that substitution came in for that.
05:44But it didn't make a whole lot of sense then, and I never got any real guidance or explanation
05:50of it since.
05:51You know, as it turned out, it didn't end up being that impact, because San Antonio still
05:56won the game.
05:57But I wondered if you had this thought watching it, because there was a sequence that could
06:03have been very important.
06:04San Antonio had a seven-point lead at the time, and Wembenyama nails like a three from, I don't
06:11know, five or six feet past the line, right?
06:13And there's contact there, and San Antonio is, they're going to go to the line, but they
06:22call time out there, right?
06:24I think there was a TV, there was a break, and I wonder if they had just kept going, if
06:30New York would have thought to challenge, because they challenged for an offensive foul
06:33there.
06:34The three came down, and I thought maybe San Antonio shouldn't have tried.
06:39If I had the timing right, I swear, I think there was a TV timeout in there, if it just
06:44came because it was coming, and they didn't call for it, so be it.
06:48But I thought that could have been a pretty big sequence.
06:51Yeah, I agree with that.
06:52I think also, we've seen loose ball fouls away from the ball get called when an offensive player
07:02is shooting the ball.
07:03So it was like, you know, the timing in terms of when Wemby released the ball from his hand
07:10and when Kelton Johnson made the shove was really fascinating.
07:14But yeah, I agree, all these little decisions, I couldn't figure out whether it was a TV timeout
07:19or whether it was a Knicks timeout.
07:22But I was also, you know, doing a bunch of other things at the same time.
07:27So it wasn't like locked in on who's timeout was what.
07:30But you're 100% right.
07:31Like, these small decisions make a huge difference, and that ended up being, you know, a four-point
07:38swing at the least.
07:40Right.
07:41Did you have any idea, by the way, when Trista started to congratulate us for something,
07:45what it was going to be?
07:45I thought it might have been about the Sabres, or it might have been some random tweet that
07:50she pulled about, you know, you're watching this new show on Apple.
07:54I did not have any idea where that was going, but, you know, the sentiment was very sweet.
08:00Well, I went on Rochester today.
08:02You did?
08:03I just so happened to go on to Rochester today with Gene.
08:08And so when I was listening to the program behind when I was waiting on hold, it was like,
08:15you're listening to WGR Rochester, and Sal Capaccio's show comes on at this time, and
08:22we've got Gene's show at this time, and then we got Shope and the Bulldog at this time.
08:26And I was like, oh, damn.
08:27We got a full-scale merger on our hands, and we got some of my favorite people on one station
08:34now.
08:35So kind.
08:36First Rochester, next, who knows?
08:38The world, I guess, is the phrase.
08:42Can I ask about Mom?
08:43I'm going to Cannes next week, speaking of the world.
08:46You're going to Cannes?
08:46You're going to France?
08:47I'm going to Cannes, France, Cannes Lions.
08:50Our crew at the Daily W, or some of us, are going to go and hobnob and put our linens
08:57on.
08:58And I've shopped way too much for French-related items, and I'm looking at a bike rental so
09:05that I can get from Antibes to Cannes every day.
09:07I don't know how I'll get back, because I'm certainly not going to do it at midnight.
09:11Maybe I'll just leave the bike there.
09:13Down in Cannes.
09:14I haven't thought it all through, guys.
09:15And I don't know how I'm going to do it in some rattan slides either, but here we are.
09:22So yeah, it should be a very fun time.
09:23I've never been to Cannes.
09:24I've never been to the south of France.
09:26Fun fact, the last time I had scheduled to go to the south of France, I found out that
09:30my mom's basement that I grew up in the south had mold damage, and I needed to spend the
09:35whole summer in Portland, which was the first domino to me living here.
09:39So it all comes full circle.
09:41French-related items.
09:43French-related items.
09:44Put it on the list of possible fantasy football team names.
09:48French-related.
09:49Yeah, French laundry.
09:50French laundry.
09:52Get to that place someday if you can.
09:55How's mom?
09:57Mom is good.
09:58Mom is on the mend.
10:00We've gotten a bunch of house stuff already done.
10:03We've got garden fights happening daily.
10:06Hopefully one of her yard umbrellas has broken with the wind, so I need to go to Lowe's today
10:14and pick up her Mother's Day present, which, you know, we're weeks in arrears of that.
10:18But we need to pick up the umbrella.
10:20We need to pick up some other items for Mother's Day for her and hopefully sort that out.
10:26Apparently we have like 75 green pepper plants because she grew them from seed.
10:31So we're giving them away.
10:33If anyone listening is living or residing in Portland, we've got pepper plants galore.
10:39We probably have too many tomato plants.
10:41We have probably too many green bean plants because I was buying two, but they come in
10:45packs of four.
10:46These are all the things that we struggle with daily in terms of art.
10:51Don't rule out that someone will reach out to you about this from this conversation.
10:54I feel like your mom...
10:55Yeah, we'd love to give them away.
10:57Your mom is on our tree.
10:59Not often is the person on the tree someone who's never been on your show, but I think
11:04we have more of a hand in her fame than in Trista's.
11:07It's true.
11:08You know, and she's like such a momager, too.
11:10She's like, you know, the joke would have really landed much better if you would have
11:13started it with this.
11:15I'm like, oh my God.
11:17Love that.
11:18Well, you're probably not dabbling in football yet, I'm guessing, with all that you're doing.
11:23Not yet.
11:24I am excited.
11:26I've become a bit of a, I would say, like a low-key Carolina Panthers fan.
11:31Oh.
11:32How did this happen?
11:33So, a friend of mine started working, and actually just a friend of show, Eric Eager,
11:37started working for the Panthers, and so I've been keeping my eye on all of the strategic
11:41moves that they make.
11:43And you know what?
11:44You end up having a fun story like they had.
11:46They won the division, which I actually placed the bet on early on in the season, gave that
11:51out.
11:52Yeah, they're on the upswing.
11:53They're a fun little cute team.
11:54We'll see what happens with Bryce Young's extension.
11:57But yeah, we've got little Cowboys that I'm obviously always keeping my eye out on.
12:01The A.J.
12:02Brown trade has piqued my interest, even though we've known that that was going to happen
12:07for probably four to six months now.
12:10Yeah.
12:11But it did happen.
12:12And obviously everything on the periphery of the NFL, which is all of the scandals and
12:20extramarital relations, I've had my eye on that as well.
12:22Did you say Eric Eager?
12:23Did you mean Eric Eager?
12:24Yeah, she said Eric Eager.
12:26You did?
12:26Okay, good.
12:27She said friend of the show, I think she mentioned.
12:29Yeah, friend of the show.
12:30I miss talking to him.
12:31It's different now.
12:33I know.
12:34He wants, though.
12:35You can tell he so very wants to still be in the content game, but he can't be.
12:39I try to get my Eric Eager, you know, intel from Matt Collar.
12:43Maybe I'll try you for this next time.
12:45Oh, yeah.
12:45Yeah.
12:46Funnel it right through.
12:47I'll let him know this is from Shope.
12:49Thank you so much.
12:50Great to talk to you again.
12:51Enjoy France.
12:53You too.
12:53Talk soon.
12:54All right.
12:55I'm not going to France.
12:57Not now.
12:58I would.
12:58But, you know, some other time.
13:01Sal coming up at five.
13:02Bills at practice today.
13:04And there was much said.
13:06We will have Sal on here coming up soon.
13:08Like.
