Jeremy White and Joe DiBiase kick things off on Friday morning by discussing the Sabres once again erasing a 2-goal deficit in the 3rd period to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 in OT. They analyze whether the Sabres can keep winning like this, falling behind and trying to come back to win. They agree it’s unlikely to be a sustainable situation, and this leads to discussions about what the team can do from here.

00:00I have an idea to start the show. Ready? Okay. We're going to have a draft, which means I get
00:05the first pick.
00:07It's more of a, it's not really a... You know, I don't even mind him going first. How often does
00:11he even win these things?
00:12He's picking first all the time. This isn't one we're going to win. This is just going to illustrate a
00:16point.
00:17Brian Mazurowski tweeted something to this effect. The draft will be Sabres players you'd like to have with their puck
00:25on the stick in the slot.
00:26Ready? I'll go first. Matias Samuelson. Which is incredible. Incredible. Who's the second pick?
00:34We had a pool of when he would score because he never scored. Right. Not that long ago. Yeah.
00:40All right. So I got Samuelson. Who's second? I think there's only a four-person point I want to make
00:44here.
00:45Tage. Tage. Third? Quinn. Four? Power? Power. Power. Power. I know it's happened twice here, but come on.
00:54It's Owen Power. He's hot. He's hot right now. But Samuelson won. I'll take him one.
00:58Is Darlene available to me? If he is. You would take power over Darlene? All the forwards?
01:04I mean, maybe all the forwards. They did have three straight goals by defensemen last night.
01:08Here's what I'll say. If the player getting the puck in the slot can shoot, I think I might want
01:14power.
01:14If there's room to make a move, I'll take Darlene. That's how he finishes. He's going to finish with the
01:19move.
01:21Samuelson number one. I love it.
01:23What if I could go back two years in time and say to you, listen, the Sabres are going to
01:29win the division and Matias Samuelson is going to become a sniper.
01:33You'd say, what? Which of those sounds more ridiculous, right?
01:39It might be more incredible than the Tage development.
01:41Like, Tage's development as a player becoming when he became Samuelson.
01:46Because he didn't just become good. He became, right, a goal scorer.
01:50However, what would he get paid on the open market today?
01:53Oh, $11 million?
01:55$10?
01:56$10.
01:57$10 at least.
01:58Okay.
01:59Yeah, $10 million.
02:00I mean, that's about half of what the best defenseman in the world makes now, right?
02:03Right.
02:04Yeah, he would make double, more than double what he makes now.
02:07He'd probably get 12.
02:07I mean, he plays a lot, and he can score a little bit, apparently.
02:11Anyway.
02:12I mean, go back to, he scored five goals in college.
02:14Like, come on.
02:16His whole collegiate career.
02:17One year, he scored five.
02:19One year.
02:19Two of the other.
02:20Okay, so he scored seven in his collegiate career.
02:21Seven college goals.
02:23In two college seasons, he scored seven goals.
02:25Last year, he scored 16.
02:27If you include the playoffs.
02:28And now he's got two?
02:29Okay.
02:30In eight games?
02:30It's two, but it feels like more than two.
02:33That's true.
02:33It definitely feels like more than that.
02:35Well, I guess we have to also just embrace it.
02:38I'm not going to complain anymore that they never play with the lead because they just
02:42come back all the time.
02:43They have been.
02:44All right.
02:45They have trailed the fourth most in the NHL this season.
02:48And their goal differential in the third is now plus eight.
02:51Yeah.
02:52Okay.
02:53Now, like, when they're trailing, you can look at that.
02:55Like, the other teams, not everybody is just automatically good when they're playing from
03:00behind.
03:00Like, the three teams that are trailing more than the Sabres this year, Vancouver, Calgary,
03:05and Philadelphia, those teams, like, Philly's been outshot 115-60 when they're trailing.
03:11Yeah.
03:11Vancouver, 107-97.
03:14The Sabres out-shoot their opponent 92-60.
03:17Right.
03:17Like, they are dominating when they are trailing.
03:19They're carrying play.
03:20Which, you might say it's a little easier to do that because teams are backing off, but
03:24whatever.
03:24I mean, they have been down two goals in four games, and they have seven of a possible
03:29eight points.
03:31But no one believes that that can last forever.
03:34Right?
03:35Like, this is fun, and they're showing that they can score again.
03:39I don't think anybody's got the wires crossed.
03:41Like, no one thinks this is a sustainable model.
03:44To trail as much as they do?
03:46No.
03:46Lindy talks that way.
03:47Power talks that way.
03:48Like, I think we do.
03:49Like, they're not going to be able to come down from two down a lot more this year.
03:54That's probably right.
03:54A couple things are happening.
03:56They're coming from behind to win.
03:58Last night for UPL, good game, right?
04:02He made a bunch of great A's, I thought.
04:06Maybe he didn't like all of them.
04:07There's always four going in.
04:08Whenever there's four going in, you're going to be upset.
04:10Trying to think which one I was really upset about, though.
04:13There might have been one.
04:14But he also had to make, I don't know, three or four or five bell, like, bell cow, bellwether.
04:21You know what I'm trying to say.
04:21It's early.
04:22I thought he was fine.
04:24I thought he was good.
04:25I thought he gave him a chance.
04:25Also, when you're up two, you need your goal to give you a chance.
04:28And I thought there were multiple times the Leafs could have buried that game and put it away.
04:32So, eh.
04:33I was fine.
04:34I was fine with it.
04:35Both goalies gave up more goals over expected.
04:37But I thought he made the saves he needed to.
04:40Toronto had incredible chances.
04:42And the Sabres, in front of their own net, the Sabres defensively are a mess.
04:46Yeah.
04:47And without Darlene, they are a mess.
04:49So, that's why Zellweger shouldn't probably play 25 minutes a night.
04:53And hopefully, Darlene can play on Saturday.
04:55He's 50-50 to return against Montreal.
04:57Right.
04:58But they played a team that gives up a lot of chances.
05:01Right?
05:02Like, they don't have a good blue line either.
05:04They give up a lot of chances in front of the net, rush opportunities.
05:08And the Sabres...
05:10The fact that they outshot Toronto in that game is incredible.
05:13Because they were down at one point...
05:14They were down...
05:15Was it like 28-12?
05:1712.
05:1715-14, right?
05:18Yeah.
05:19And they end up out shooting them 34-30.
05:21That's incredible.
05:23And they were getting quality looks.
05:26I mean, you get the couple goals.
05:27Like, Gilbert's from a distance.
05:29Which is a nice play by Quinn.
05:31But that team over there, they have just as many defensive problems as you do.
05:36But they don't have the excuse of their best defenseman's out of the lineup.
05:38They just...
05:39That's just them.
05:40That's just who they are.
05:41And I don't think that this is who the Sabres are.
05:43I think they're missing their best defenseman.
05:45And Zellweger is going to give you some fun stuff.
05:48But he's also going to maybe make you that.
05:51If he's playing 24 minutes a night.
05:53You're going to be leaky in your own end.
05:55And when Darlene comes back, he probably slides back to like an 18-19 minute guy.
05:59Yeah.
06:004-3-1 through 8 game.
06:01Sabres win in overtime last night.
06:03And would it be agreeable that they're not playing their best?
06:08And if they play like this the whole season, that's a problem.
06:12But at the same time, they're scrambling, right?
06:17They're getting points.
06:18They have nine points now in eight games.
06:20Because these last three games, they got five out of six against divisional opponents.
06:24They still have only two regulation wins in eight games.
06:27That's not very good.
06:29But whatever.
06:30They're scrambling.
06:31They're getting points.
06:32It feels like they're keeping my panic at bay.
06:36How's that?
06:37With these comebacks.
06:37The two-goal comeback in Toronto and the two-goal comeback in Montreal.
06:41If instead of nine points, they have six because they don't come back, I mean, I'm over here worried, right?
06:46Six points would be down with Detroit behind almost everybody else except for Columbus, who you lost to, and the
06:52Flyers as well, who are very, very bad.
06:55Yeah.
06:55So, they're scrambling.
06:56They're the golfer that's scrambling and finding a way and staying alive.
06:59So, good.
07:01And I think, I guess, the positive view of that would be believe that they're going to find their drive
07:07at some point.
07:08Sure.
07:08That they'll start hitting fairways instead of playing from the rough.
07:10Yeah.
07:10They're putting it in the woods right now, and they're punching out, and they're making a 20-footer for par
07:15at the end of it.
07:16That, by the fifth hole, they're going to be hitting drives down the middle, and they'll be back to who
07:21they are.
07:22And I think you see enough signs in their game that that's still in there.
07:30They just haven't done it consistently, and they haven't done it to start games.
07:34So, I would be, I'm still remaining hopeful.
07:39And stealing, you know, even if it's only one point.
07:41I know you're giving Toronto a point here, you're giving Montreal a point there.
07:44But winning the divisional games are important, too, because this is a tough division right now.
07:52If you look at the Atlantic, everybody has at least, well, I guess, except Detroit, has at least a point
07:59per game so far this year.
08:01Like, everybody's within shouting distance of each other early on.
08:03No one's falling out of it.
08:04So, these games are going to be meaningful, I think, down the stretch.
08:07Toronto's probably fighting for playoff spots down the stretch of the season.
08:11And if you're in that, too, then, you know, I think these games do matter a lot.
08:16Saturday matters a lot, too.
08:17Yeah.
08:18Saturday, Montreal.
08:20803-0550 is our number.
08:22We do have the three-way trade Hellebuck rumor, which is, like, connecting a couple of different rumors together that
08:29UPL would be traded to the Rangers,
08:31and the Sabres would get Hellebuck, and what other pieces would happen to make it happen in Winnipeg.
08:35Like, the reporting out of Winnipeg continues to be, like, whatever, the Sabres and this Winnipeg thing and this Hellebuck
08:41thing.
08:42It's been months, Joe.
08:43It's been since the start of June.
08:44So, I feel like sometimes when we mention it, it gets tedious to even bring up.
08:48I'm trying to think.
08:49Has there ever been something else that's gone this long?
08:51Wasn't the Bills courting Odell Beckham, like, longer?
08:54Maybe.
08:55That was, like, a six-month thing.
08:56Trading away Eichel took this long.
08:59Yeah, that's right.
09:00I mean, it took into November.
09:00Was it November?
09:01November.
09:02Yeah.
09:02All right.
09:03So, that took this long.
09:04We all thought that was going to happen.
09:05And that started earlier because they hadn't made the playoffs.
09:07Right, right.
09:08So, April to November?
09:09A long, long time.
09:10Yeah, that's right.
09:11Anyway, the reporting out of Winnipeg is a whole bunch of, like, hey, he's going to show up and the
09:17team doesn't want him back.
09:19By the way, it's a football Friday.
09:20We get to lots of football.
09:21I just want to tie this loose end up.
09:22And I thought this was a carefully crafted tweet that I saw about Elliott Friedman on his 32 thoughts,
09:29that there's a belief that players don't want him back in there.
09:31Which, that is, as we've talked about all the steps along the way, one last step along the way for
09:38Winnipeg to trade him away is for Winnipeg to tell people,
09:41I don't think the players want him back.
09:43Oh, okay.
09:44Well, I don't want anybody getting in the way of my players who are off to a good start this
09:48year.
09:49They've done everything they can in terms of Winnipeg.
09:51Wait long.
09:53Diminish his value.
09:54Say that his value is diminished.
09:56Say the offers are ridiculous.
09:57Now they're saying the players don't want him back either.
10:00I think that's the final step to finally doing whatever you're going to do is say his teammates don't like
10:06him either.
10:07Which, right, I think back to the Eichel time and it was distraction this and remove the C and oh,
10:13you would never welcome him back in that room.
10:15So, that's a big part of this and I feel like the entire machine has started firing up to move
10:22it forward and Dreger says, feels like it's, not Dreger, Friedman.
10:26Elliott Friedman says it feels like it's coming to head in the next week.
10:30So, I actually now expect it.
10:33I don't know if I expect it here yet, but it does.
10:35I still don't know where to expect it though.
10:37The Kings are getting floated out here, but I feel like that's more just, people keep asking me who he's
10:44going to get traded to.
10:45I've got to come up with something.
10:46Right.
10:47I also think that's a little bit of the GM last minute throwing a mystery team to get the last
10:53little bit of the offer.
10:54Sure.
10:54Because the message out of Carolina continues to be like they just don't have the pieces to get it done.
10:59Winnipeg doesn't want Nikitian, that deal's not there.
11:01And the Rangers don't want him because they'd have to deal with $20 million in goalie when Shosturkin comes back
11:07in a year.
11:07Like, they don't want to move that big.
11:09And Montreal doesn't work because he doesn't want to be in Canada.
11:12Right.
11:13Like, there's problems with everybody.
11:16Here, it's just, I don't even know if there's a problem.
11:19It's just the problem was sending Lucan in somewhere.
11:21And that there's been like radio silence between the two teams since like the summer.
11:26That's the problem.
11:28I think the pieces are still here.
11:30The best, if you told me, he became available today and there was no past history in negotiating at all.
11:38And you just looked around the league and said, what team is most capable of giving Winnipeg something that could
11:45get them to trade Hellebuck right now?
11:46I think you would still pick this team because of how many centers they have.
11:50Have we changed who the players can be?
11:52We're eight games in.
11:54Can Quinn be in the deal?
11:58I wouldn't.
11:59Man.
12:00He was tough.
12:01It's tougher.
12:01He was arguably.
12:02You're asking me after his best game as a Buffalo Sabre.
12:05He was arguably.
12:06Ever.
12:06The most valuable asset that people would routinely say yes to.
12:10Right?
12:10Yes, definitely.
12:12McLeod, probably.
12:14Okay.
12:14McLeod.
12:15Or Norris.
12:16Like, one of those two.
12:17But Quinn was right up there.
12:18But now Quinn is above those guys, right?
12:20Definitely.
12:21He contributes to the team way more than they do.
12:23Definitely.
12:24I mean, did he have more points last night than either of those two have all season?
12:27Ooh, that's close.
12:28He had four.
12:30Yeah, that may be.
12:31That's close.
12:32Norris, two.
12:33McLeod, two.
12:33Quinn had as many points last night as both of them combined have had so far this season.
12:39So, man, I think a lot of people would be hesitant to give Quinn away right now.
12:42Oh, yeah.
12:44But you got to think.
12:45Like, you got to pay him.
12:46You got to pay him.
12:46You got to pay him, and if you want to – I guess maybe here's why you wouldn't want to
12:51do it now.
12:52Last year at the trade deadline, didn't it feel different?
12:54What was Jack Quinn last year at the trade deadline when everybody was trying to move him for something and
12:59a bigger deal?
12:59He was a secondary scorer.
13:02He was on a third line.
13:04Good third line.
13:05But he was on a third line.
13:06He was not playing big minutes.
13:08And he would score some goals, 20 goals, but he would disappear for a week,
13:13and it just didn't matter because he wasn't being counted on as much.
13:17And Tuck being around, I think, was important to that.
13:20This year, with Doan not scoring and Norris not scoring and Tuck not being here,
13:26like, you asked the other day, who do you trust to score on this team?
13:29And he might be the second answer after Tage Thompson.
13:32And do you feel like this team can afford right now to give away their second-best goal scorer?
13:39I don't.
13:39But I also don't know if they can afford to sign him because, what, they just signed Benson and Doan
13:46to the $7 million range.
13:47What did they offer?
13:48Quinn.
13:49Did they offer him something?
13:50Maybe like six and a half, seven, and he thinks I'll go get ten?
13:54He is going to be, for me, the prime example of a guy that I have to worry about.
13:58Wait a minute.
13:59Am I seeing the absolute best every single night because he knows he's playing for $80 million?
14:05Right?
14:06Just put on a year, and you get an $80 million check.
14:09And then you can drift back to being a secondary scorer.
14:12I'm not trying to make that about character or anything like that.
14:14I don't know him well enough.
14:15But I feel like a GM would have to be wary of that.
14:18That I'm getting his best.
14:20Have I felt like he's the kind of player that does that every night?
14:23That's one thing about Benson and Doan and signing them.
14:26Don't you feel like you're pretty confident or pretty set, and they give you the same thing nearly every night?
14:31Yes.
14:31I'm starting to wonder that about Doan a little bit.
14:33But for the most part, yes.
14:34Okay.
14:35Yes.
14:35And for Quinn, whatever.
14:37He's always kind of been this – I don't want to say he's been much of a mystery.
14:40He's a high pick.
14:41And he's scored some goals.
14:42But there have been hiccups along the way in the development arc or the production arc.
14:47And now if he all of a sudden has a rocket ship season, people will be skeptical about that for
14:52a long term.
14:53And I feel like Yarmulke might be wary.
14:56He's going to have the – what's the right guy for this?
14:59He's going to have the Drew Stafford season?
15:02Sure.
15:02Is he the guy that like, oh, you just had the big year because it was a contract year for
15:06you?
15:06What, he had 30 goals that year?
15:07Yeah.
15:07Yeah.
15:07Maybe.
15:08He had like five hat-tricks in one season.
15:10Yeah, that sounds right.
15:11That's him.
15:12Basically.
15:13Anyway, 803-0550.
15:14He also – like, by the way, like the numbers going up – I want to look at like –
15:18is it any different for him like per 60?
15:20Because his numbers going up – the other thing to keep in mind is – and I guess this would
15:25be an argument he could make too on like why I should get paid more – he's being used a
15:28lot more.
15:29He's playing four more minutes per night than he did last year.
15:32Like, again, to the point of him being a secondary scorer.
15:35Last year, Quinn's playing 15 minutes and 30 seconds a night.
15:38This year, he's playing 19 minutes and 20 seconds a night.
15:41Like, it has gone way up for how much Lindy is using him.
15:45And he is – he's pretty much answering the bell.
15:48A couple games in there where he didn't do a lot.
15:50But, whatever.
15:51He's a point-per-game player through eight games.
15:54Like, same as Taige.
15:57That's a guy that, if he keeps doing that, is getting $10 million.
16:00Yeah.
16:01And he fought.
16:02And he fought.
16:04It was a weird one, though.
16:05I don't really know why the guy tried to fight him.
16:07They were shorthanded.
16:08He kind of elbowed Quinn as they went by.
16:10There must have been something – some sort of dust up on the ice throughout the game
16:15or somewhere, annoying each other.
16:16And their defensemen continued to just be, like – last year, too.
16:20Like, how do they score?
16:21Their defensemen score.
16:24Yeah.
16:25Zellweger, Power, Samuelson.
16:28And Gilbert.
16:29And Gilbert.
16:30I don't know how much you want to count on that one, but –
16:31I do.
16:32You got a good one there.
16:33It counts.
16:34Yeah.
16:34803-0550.
16:35To a football Friday and a lot of Bill's conversations throughout the morning in a moment.

16:52We, of course, had a watch party last night, so we were out watching the game with a bunch
16:55of people.
16:56Watching Sabres games is officially – it was, of course, in the playoffs and end of season
17:01last year, but that's a sign the Sabres are very much so back, and that you can go to
17:06a bar or establishment.
17:07We were at the 1812 Tavern for a watch party, and it was packed.
17:11Sounds up.
17:12All the TVs are on.
17:13Everybody's watching it.
17:14There's an NFL game on and another TV that, like, you can – there's an NLCS game on.
17:19You can keep an eye on all those stuff, all those things, but everyone's locked in
17:22on the Sabres game.
17:23Wearing jerseys to bars is a good time.
17:25We had a great time.
17:26But the third period made it awesome, too.
17:28Yeah.
17:29A lot of high-fiving around.
17:32Yes.
17:32High-fiving strangers.
17:33That's when you know the Sabres are back.
17:35I went hoping to see Gavin McKenna, and barely did.
17:38He played six minutes.
17:39And then the coach –
17:41The coach said he had to get him out on the ice more, which he did.
17:43The coach made it sound like he was doing him a favor because he hadn't played in 30
17:49minutes, and I didn't want to do that to him.
17:51Yeah.
17:53Weird.
17:54That's just odd.
17:55He used the excuse also that they were shorthanded so much is why.
18:00And they weren't shorthanded for the last, like, 28 minutes of the game.
18:05So, that was a very strange explanation.
18:08They think he just got benched, and they didn't want to say that he just got benched.
18:11Yeah.
18:13Hmm.
18:14Good for the Sabres.
18:15Montreal, Saturday.
18:17Also, by the way, at Matthews, he scored the goal early.
18:19I don't hear Brian Koziel at the stat on postgame.
18:22Matthews scores that first goal.
18:24Did not have a shot attempt the rest of the game.
18:26Wow.
18:27Now, maybe that's because he just got passed on to Marchenko, who had a hat trick.
18:30But not another shot attempt after his goal in the first period.
18:34So, not a lot of Matthews last night.
18:37Good win.
18:38Good win.
18:39Not a regular –
18:39You made Toronto freak out also.
18:41Yeah.
18:42You made them –
18:42Yeah.
18:43Oh, yeah.
18:43Because they blew a third period lead.
18:44The Leafs podcast, and I saw some clips on Twitter.
18:47Yeah, you gave them their little freak out.
18:48They're just worried they can't defend anything and aren't going to be able to all season.
18:53Back to that quick thing about, like, is Quinn in the trade for Hellebuck?
18:56Now, if there's a three-way, is it Consta?
18:59Are you going to give up on him because of a couple of games where you got him on the
19:02wing
19:02and you should have him at center?
19:04Is it Kulik, who got scratched?
19:07All of a sudden, I got – he's been scratched twice?
19:11Yeah.
19:11Last night, though, was because they sent him back to Buffalo.
19:14He hadn't felt well.
19:14Okay.
19:15They wanted to do tests to make sure that there was no, you know, health issues.
19:20The guy, I would say, even more than Quinn, though, that has officially ruled himself out
19:25from ever being in a Hellebuck offer, again, is Oslin.
19:28He's the guy for that.
19:29He gets used.
19:30He had two assists last night.
19:32He's a top-six center.
19:33They paid him.
19:34Like, he's under contract.
19:36That's the guy that maybe you thought, like, okay, he could be in that deal in the summer,
19:40and there's just 0% chance he would ever be in that deal.
19:43803-0550, our phone number, if you want to chime in.
19:46A football Friday.
19:47We'll talk with Vic Carucci.
19:49We'll remember some Raiders.
19:51It's been a while since we've done – we've probably never done the Raiders.
19:56Right?
19:56When was the last time they played the Raiders?
19:59They must have come here somewhat recent, right?
20:03It's an AFC – no, because there's never any crossover.
20:05No.
20:06Because it's always the Chiefs.
20:08They probably haven't played the Raiders since the game in COVID in Vegas.
20:13They must have played them here once.
20:162023.
20:17It's the only matchup since – so in the last six years, they've only played one game.
20:21The Raiders came here in 2023.
20:23Name their starting quarterback that day.
20:27Holy cow.
20:28They're the Vegas Raiders, right?
20:29He's a Super Bowl starting quarterback.
20:33Not for the Raiders, obviously.
20:35No, no.
20:36Started a Super Bowl.
20:37He was their quarterback that day.
20:38He threw two picks.
20:40I believe – I see a Matt Milano pick six on here.
20:44Wow.
20:45I can't – usually when we do this, I can picture the uniforms or the – it's a nice day
20:49out
20:50or it's night.
20:51Of course, it's not a night game, this one.
20:52Yeah.
20:53The Raiders came here three years ago?
20:5538-10 was the final.
20:57That sounds right.
20:58A September 17th affair.
21:00Okay, so it's week two.
21:02Yep.
21:02You had a Latavius Murray touchdown in this game for the Bills.
21:09Damian Harris scored a touchdown in this game.
21:11How about that?
21:11A game where Damian Harris and Latavius Murray scored rushing touchdowns for the Bills.
21:16Sounds like a fun afternoon.
21:17Yeah.
21:19I got nothing on this game.
21:21Nothing.
21:23Garoppolo.
21:24I wasn't going to get it.
21:26I would not have gotten there.
21:27You don't remember Garoppolo with the Raiders?
21:29I would not have gotten there.
21:30Nah.
21:318-0-3-0-5-50.
21:33That's their last meeting.
21:34On the Sabres if you want.
21:35And, of course, we'll get to some football with a football Friday.
21:37I want to talk about the two things going on with the Bills right now, which is, well,
21:42there's more than two things, but Joe Brady talking about James Cook and Jim Leonard talking
21:46about the defense.
21:47I find both these things incredibly interesting, the way they're doing it.
21:50And with Cook, many controversy out there in the world.
21:53People got mad at Brady for the way he talked about James Cook, and I just don't understand
21:57it personally.
21:58So, we'll get to that.
21:59Cook's fumbling the defense and whether or not they can get something going here.
22:02Could they have a get-right game against the Raiders, or is Kirk Cousins actually the worst
22:07case scenario for what this defense could face?
22:09Because quarterbacks that can pick apart a zone might pick apart a zone.
22:138-0-3-0-5-50 to join us on this Football Friday here on WGR.
