Bangers and Cash - Season 13 - Episode 09: Willys Jeep/Austin A35/Case Tractor/Hummer
Transcript
00:04on sale this week the 1968 A35 lovely condition runs really well I think the
00:14cars they don't make massive money after being a commercial there's very few of them around
00:19it's surely gonna run 12 grand and I'd like to think of it more that's it everyone loves
00:25commercials they've got a place in our hearts I think really you remember dad coming home
00:29in the van or uncle coming home in the van it's just a lovely little thing to own oh this
00:36is a
00:36fair machine the Hummer blimey what a motor there's something about being in a Hummer and driving a
00:41Hummer it's all American when you're in a Hummer you can do anything you want we can see over the
00:48hedges go anywhere you want up down Dale across anything this is a nice old tractor there very
00:57very special being one owner from new Wow well it's looking good isn't it oh this will be happy
01:04memories driving it yeah great fun like a little Aladdin's cave he's a visual expert at reversing
01:24the Matthewsons a dynasty of classic car auctioneers 55 the joys of an auction most people will go to a
01:33sale with something in mind but come away with something different the fun is the chase we'll
01:37have a look and we'll advise you from there you just don't know what's on the end of the phone
01:41what
01:41you're gonna find when you open them doors this is a family's love affair with motors that have lived
01:47a life testing testing most people will buy a car because they can relate to it maybe a car that
01:53dad
01:53you're selling dreams right here we go we're just trying to get everything out obviously after
02:10auction really for the usual routine just been busy we don't anything else do we just go on don't you
02:15go on get stuck in just shove this forward are you pushing no not yet these next two weeks will
02:24just
02:24be hard out flat out all the time oh that's easier it's just a big clear out and then within
02:31sort of
02:32two weeks another load coming back in
02:37two weeks another load coming back in just a few weeks after a couple of hours yesterday
02:38with all that going on i haven't actually seen derek well yeah i to be fair he did pop up
02:43for a couple of hours
02:44yesterday um and then went for years of birth i actually don't know where he is i don't know
02:53how's it in the office busy yeah keep it round i've seen a lot of people here today the person
02:59i have not seen is derek
03:03yeah tend not to see him after auction to be honest tends to stay down at thornton the dale or
03:09he's
03:09usually out collecting something so derek's not laying low he's been at thornton the dale prepping
03:17for a visit to an old friend in the east midlands just if we see something and we like it
03:24it's a
03:25reasonable price we'll have it there's a point that many collectors reach when they simply run out of
03:32space too many bikes too many cars and they're just not getting used enough so it's time to have a
03:38bit of a move around robin rests leicestershire nest is overflowing so he's identified some items for
03:45auction starting with a bsa bantam d14-4 it's too uncomfortable to go far on it and a rather smart
03:54honda cd 175 japanese bikes are far superior better break they're a lot better ride some of the old
04:02british bikes now when you get on them you have a job to stop the things robin plans to deliver
04:12the
04:12bikes to yorkshire at a later date but today he's saying his farewells before derek tips up to come
04:18a little austin a35 van lovely condition runs really well uh i think the cars they don't make
04:25massive money but being a commercial there's very few of them around they are really saleable things
04:31on the willis g it's a lovely old thing that is added in france uh we've done a couple of
04:38the d-day
04:38anniversaries taking some american veterans around it's just a really really nice thing
04:44it's french built it's a 1952 odd kiss and it was in the french army and finally there's a hefty
04:531954 stepside chevrolet pickup with 51 000 miles on the clock i bought it on the wind one day all
05:01i've ever used it for really is to go and fetch me firewood in it so you've got the original
05:06straight
05:06six engine in i believe the 3.8 not the fastest thing on the road it's quite noisy you get
05:11to about
05:1240 and you know you know you're doing 40 mile now let's have a rattle through prices the honda i
05:20would
05:20hope it's going to do somewhere around about 2 000 pounds the sa i'd like to think you do between
05:2515
05:26and 1600 the little austin van we're hoping that's going to be about 12 000 pounds then the jeep that
05:33has got to be 17 000 and then finally the big willy borough my feeling is somewhere around about 15
05:40000
05:50there's lots of cars there that i don't think i'll ever see so yeah it's a very nostalgic trip
05:56and you've come to see some lovely old cars motorbikes you know i've got his little wallet with
06:04him but uh yeah we'll have to see fantastic i love seeing them just you know can't get you take
06:11your
06:12blood can you
06:18iconic yeah it's huge there's something about being in a hummer and driving a hummer
06:24it's all american when you do see one over this side of the water it's like wow that's cool
06:31or it is in my book anyway um and it's the fact that sitting in the driver's seat you actually
06:35can't reach the other side that's that's quite funny but yeah yeah no they are cool
06:46the hummer's origins lie with the american military when the pentagon made a one billion dollar order
06:51for a high mobility multi-purpose wheeled vehicle humvee for short the beast of a vehicle had a
06:58suitably well muscled fan the one and only arnold schwarzenegger who was so impressed by the humvee that
07:04he persuaded the manufacturers to make a consumer version the hummer was born these gas guzzling beer
07:12moths ruled the roads for almost two decades until a combination of general motors financial problems
07:17and high fuel prices saw the hummer range axed but it wasn't the end because the hummer is back with
07:2580 000 pre-orders for its relaunch as a gargantuan electric vehicle the big beast still costs a small
07:32fortune though i think it's too nice to take off road i mean i assume they'd be good won't they
07:43i mean
07:43they're big and tall and wide and that but this one's done 28 or 29 000 mile i think so
07:51now i wouldn't
07:52take it off road no way it's too good they have to be a pavement princess for me i think
07:56yeah everything's
07:57just twice the size it is over here isn't it really ah it's just you know everybody says stuff's like
08:04a
08:04magic carpet that's a magic happen it really really is there you go yeah it's just huge isn't it it's
08:13taking up the space with about three cars in here anyhow isn't it no i don't think it is very
08:17practical
08:17i think it'll use more fuel to get anywhere than anything else would i mean you can get lots of
08:23people
08:23in it can't you and you can travel in comfort but yeah i suppose when you drive around if you
08:28want to
08:28get looked at all the time then you buy one of these don't you in the showroom no space is
08:41wasted
08:42awkward small lots are carefully placed in small spots
08:49but in the yard another gigantic vehicle has rocked up the veteran of the vietnam war weighs in at 10
08:57tons and is 25 feet long i genuinely think it's fab this m-series us army truck was built by
09:07kaiser jeep
09:07in 1959 and it impressed dave a fantastic bit of kit i think these are brilliant they just may make
09:16everything strong and durable and it lasts forever i love over-engineered stuff why just about make it so
09:23it'll just about do the job why not make it so it'll do the job easily and forever you know
09:28and that's
09:29what these guys do quirky little things i think are brilliant absolutely brilliant yeah i love it to bits
09:37i wish i could justify buying one but i don't really need one i just really like them though
09:42even down to the axles all interchange so if you've got a problem with that one it will fit that
09:47one and
09:47this particular truck has even got a multi-fuel engine which does exactly really what it says on
09:53the tin just brilliant idea isn't it really that engine will run on just about everything apart from
09:58jam sandwiches really apparently there was three companies that built the engine i think the only one
10:03that's really sought after is they do a turbocharged version which they called the whistler apparently
10:09because i mean they're a big ebby num thing anyway aren't they add the fact to the that they were
10:13whistling and apparently you could hear them coming miles away so um so the enemy were waiting for you
10:19before you got there they're the ones that people are sort of really are looking for the owner's perhaps
10:24been a little bit optimistic personally i think it's six seven eight thousand pounds i mean that's a
10:32fantastic bit of kit for that sort of money in it really the vendor is hoping for north of ten
10:37there's
10:38only one open it's bob opening it and so he ain't gonna do that it does give you the impression
10:44that
10:45it would just go on and on forever you know and it has done so far isn't it here it
10:48is now yeah what a
11:11brilliant bit of kit
11:12made it a lot quicker if it weren't the bloody traffic
11:15after more than four hours of frustration derek's landed in leicestershire oh that aches
11:24right let's go and see oh right then rob yeah not bad all right good to see you
11:31yeah that's your job keeping him well yeah not too bad good how about business busy oh it's
11:36right surrender it's amazing derek and rob rest they're old mates from the trade rob runs a local
11:42mot and service center and knows what makes matthewson senior tick derek your cakes on that
11:48pallet apparently oh oh good good good what do you reckon derek lovely gorgeous aren't they
11:55nice bit of take over a while so we're taking these three then yeah yeah the van the jeep right
12:01and
12:01this whole beast lovely so she'll go on last first up rob's dug out a bit of matthewson's treasure
12:08oh original catalog i'll tell you what we saved some money by not having them printed they used
12:16to cost us six thousand pound an auction that but that's uh we don't have to do it now because
12:19it's
12:20all on the computer in it but see that good old days i can remember a load of these cars
12:27you know
12:27no i can't remember people's names let alone much much else excuse me but i can remember the cars
12:34reminiscing over it's back to business the chevy pickup just not doing it anymore but it is an
12:42exceptional vehicle the motor's worth 15 grand because it's so good but it's going to struggle to
12:47make it i think the little austin really might surprise you it's surely going to run 12 grand and i'd
12:56like to think a bit more well that sounds sweet that old bus don't you what a genuine i'll know
13:02where
13:03that is gonna have jeep up top little van underneath truck on the back no trouble
13:13that one i'm not sure sure that i it's somewhere between 15 and 20 in it
13:18i think it ought to be auctioneer's discretion and then i'll go for 17.
13:25sure do they are bloody awkward things aren't they yeah they are especially when you're a bit fat
13:32here we are i'll watch you on with that austin
13:39steady on mate hang on that's it yeah hang on a minute yeah yeah we'll have her on then rob
13:49a bit more lovely that boy well done thank you right okay thanks ever so much okay look after
13:57yourself i'll see you soon see ya right i'm going to love and leave you
14:22you
14:22they look robust let's put it like that i mean yeah they're all right but they are it's um it's
14:27unusual
14:28it's different especially in pickering we don't see many of them flying about
14:36oh this is a fair machine the hummer blimey what a motor it speaks for itself
14:41there look look at it really expensive brand new i can imagine i dread to think what the cost new
14:45yeah she's the h2 she's a 2006 model a six liter obviously petrol automatic 4b4 uh yes this is you
14:54less compliant believe it or not 28 000 miles showing one owner since the import into the uk
14:59there we go look what a machine where are we then i see 16 16 000 then and away and
15:04one at 16
15:05thousand one hundred and two three four sixteen four hundred five here with me at 16 five tell
15:11me when you want to jump in five hundred and six sixteen six and seven then that looks a lot
15:16of car
15:16for that at sixteen thousand seven hundred and eight he says nine back at you slide down a little bit
15:21though at sixteen thousand nine hundred seventeen thousand he says at seventeen it's provisional but
15:26we'll make a phone call think it's worth more at seventeen thousand and we all done yes for the first
15:31provisional for the second third and last time right it's seventy thousand provisional all right
15:38nice to speak to you all right thanks a lot take care bye thank you he was pleased he he
15:44wanted to
15:45sell it so i think he's yeah he's happy oh we'll have fun with this one then but yeah all
15:50right thank you
15:51bye-bye he had a brand new hummer at 50 000 pounds some years ago he just loves them more
15:58portable than his bentley so there you go
16:05derek's leicestershire collection has attracted attention across the whole matthewson family
16:10you can't help but smile can you dave's casting an admiring glance at the little austin van
16:16everyone loves commercials they've got a place in our hearts i think really you remember dad coming
16:21home with the van or uncle coming home in the van you remember as kids because as a kid
16:24wheel just jumped in the back of the van didn't you didn't have any seat belts you can genuinely
16:30remember an adventure with the commercial they're absolutely great and the nice thing about this one
16:36it's got a rear seat conversion as well so you can take the kids out yeah they have a tendency
16:43obviously to rot that front wheel throws all the muck in there and you don't knock it out next thing
16:47you
16:47know all this area around here is as rotten as a pear so the quick way of repairing is you
16:54take the
16:54headlamp out you take the indicator off you take that plinth off and they fill that all over so there's
17:00no seam they fill it all over and then put the indicator on the front with this little van obviously
17:07it still retains its seal down there and the indicators on a nice plinth so to buy that van what
17:14is
17:14it going to cost someone you can buy them cheaper but i think that van will hit 10 000. i
17:20could make
17:20the decision as to whether to buy that van or not in less than a minute yeah if you need
17:25longer than a
17:25minute yeah maybe you need to get out a bit more it's just a lovely little thing to own
17:36charlie's a fan of the pickup it's not a show-winning one but it's so honest you could polish it
17:43so that
17:43it's nice oily rag it and just quick service up and away you go got a chip in it there
17:49but that
17:50to me is originality if you stood 10 foot away you probably won't see that it's just patina because if
17:56it was rusty there'd be all there wouldn't there and in 10 years time when that's got twice as big
18:01then i'd probably paint it but for now i think i'd leave it as it is
18:12i think they're absolutely brilliant obviously they were designed for a purpose and the purpose
18:19wasn't a particularly nice one was it you know who wants to go to war we're very lucky we do
18:23a few
18:23every year they're smart and up and running you need 15 000 if they're quite exceptional and they've got a
18:30load of bits on i mean some come with the guns and and all the other fittings and things then
18:34they
18:34can push on as much as 20. yeah not particularly quick on the road though 40 45 mile an hour
18:38but
18:38that's quick enough when you've got no door this particular jeep it's got about the bare minimum
18:43it's got the rope on the front everyone tends to have the rope on the front but we haven't got
18:46a
18:46pickaxe but you don't often see the case for the gun obviously the spare wheel's always on the cans
18:52always on and the shovel and the axe are just about always on and you can get everything for them
18:59that's dead straight in there i love all the little things like that i mean you know that's obviously
19:05got a light guide on anyway so you know you don't get shot out by a measure smith on your
19:08way home
19:09tonight yeah if you want to see what's happening what's gone wrong there you just turn your headlamp
19:13around i mean real cool we have a clear out and then we have a refill
19:27as promised rob and his wife sarah have brought in the bikes to add to the vehicles derrick collected
19:33i didn't use them very often we'll have a bit of a change yeah as long as you don't change
19:39your wife
19:39you never know you never know it's cruel i'll have a bit more space oh a lot more space i'll
19:48be
19:48able to get something else to put in the space there'll be something coming along
19:57the bike market it's peaks and troughs a little bit i think we've just had a bit of a trough
20:01seems to be a bit more interest hmm paul spotted rob and sarah's bikes right yeah little honda
20:09little 175 look lovely little little lightweight ideal for you guys sick of these heavy british iron
20:17and thinking of something a little more user-friendly good little runabout bike really
20:24so i right rate them good little bike or if you're on a british version you got bsa little bsa
20:31little
20:31bantams and such like brilliant little machines again nice user-friendly lightweight lightweight easy
20:38aren't they don't take up loads of room in the garage put them at the back of the garage still
20:41fit your car in make a lot of sense value wise how are they standing up these days thousand pound
20:481200 maybe maybe a little bit more honda i would expect the honda mid to late teens bit more usable
20:58different generation dare i say older generation younger generation a bit more in demand supply and demand
21:36isn't it
21:37uh we just shot a space so i'm gonna have to put it outside and hope somebody puts a bid
21:42in for it
21:44peekaboo yeah to see if your customers are all right there to get the money out of them
21:48do you think i'll get a yorkshire man to ride in this
21:50well and pay and pay oh no you presume that's the foot brake for you well this must be your
21:56handbrake
21:57that looks to be in a slightly dangerous position yeah you got your dingaling there as well
22:05oh dear i think the dingaling's gone rusty i suppose it would do up wouldn't it but in fact
22:11it could be a winter's project oh why need some new tires though because these are flat
22:27this yeah they're both right yeah i've seen them both running yeah okay no problem lads all right
22:31speak to you later thank you mate we seem to have got some pigeons move into the barn so
22:36uh yeah it was a bit sticky but anyway we like we like to be somewhat like tidy don't we
22:41so i thought
22:42we'll just give it all a quick slush off today we are going only down towards molten um to an
22:48undisclosed location really uh and we're collecting an old case tractor that hasn't moved for some time
22:57and i believe it was purchased by granddad their granddad not my runner their granddad when it was new
23:03so it's around about 1948 rings a bell don't hold me to that um so i'm going down there to
23:12meet
23:12mum and daughter uh they're only local to us so so i know exactly where i'm going
23:24my family on my mother's side have actually farmed around here for generations
23:31well the tractor belonged to my grandfather when he died it would then be passed on to mum
23:39a short hop from thornton le dale sophie hamilton and her mum marion are preparing for paul's arrival
23:47okay are you ready there i am yeah wow
23:57right there we go yes well it's looking good isn't it it does look good she was a bit dusty
24:04wasn't she just a little bit well it's hardly surprising i mean how long has it been sat here
24:10other than well 30 years 30 years this case tractor arrived on the family farm in 1946
24:19it's typical of the machines that helped transform british agriculture after the second world war
24:25it also comes in a very fetching shade of orange
24:29so you would see a case an orange tractor in the distance and you would know it was a case
24:33brilliant advertising but also it was health and safety because you could it was so bright that
24:42if there was people about in its way they would instantly get out of the way which is brilliant
24:48it's almost like you know high vis back in 1946
24:55my father had a thrashing business a contracting business just very locally around here you know
25:02the winter months were taken up most days going to different farms
25:08it would have been really exciting you know it'd be like getting the absolute high tech of today
25:14arriving thrashing and bailing all day long when it wasn't being used for thrashing it was being used
25:22for ploughing um so a total workhorse oh in fact the chimney's here it goes on that bit over there
25:32oh this would be happy memories sitting on here yeah and driving it yeah great fun well i i'm one
25:41of
25:41five so there's five girls in our family all my sisters live in the south of england now uh none
25:47of
25:47us are in farming none of the family uh you know uh sufficiently interested to uh you know to carry
25:55on with
25:56it um so you know i'm in my late 80s and you know there might be somebody out there who
26:04would
26:06just enjoy having it that's the important thing
26:17in pickering auction time sees activity ramped up robin's vehicles are up for grabs
26:24oh it is absolutely original isn't it it's got a rear seat in it
26:31the 1968 a35 do you want to do this one did you uh i can do uh only because i've
26:38sold it before a
26:39very good friend of mine bought this some years ago 14 000 pound i think it was then lovely lovely
26:44lovely
26:45van super thing start me on it 10 let's get away at 10 10 250 10 5 10 5 7
26:5150 11 11 000 pounds
26:53it's an absolute stunner i think it's worth more 11 1 11 11 100. might be able to put a
27:00deal
27:00together bring you both together provisional 11 1 provisional yeah you had a reserve on it of 12 000
27:07pounds we've got 11 100 yeah what's the minimum you'll take okay lovely i'll go back to him and see
27:15what he says okay thanks robin bye bye oh well what's 11 and a half 12 grand for it
27:22hello you just had a bid on the austin a35 um i've just been speaking to the vendor and he
27:27did have a
27:28reserve on it of 12 000 pounds but would be willing to sort of meet you halfway if necessary
27:33yeah 11 5 what are you gonna do with it oh perfect i'm sure i'll accept that bye bye
27:40so he owns a deli and a couple of pubs so the plan is to have it sign written and
27:45then have
27:46it a little run around for his uh business perfect
27:53oh the chevrolet gmc we collected it again same group of cars and i've never seen one more
27:58original is it really originally really original there we go look beautifully mellowed interior
28:03and so forth most definitely a keeping vehicle oh yeah there we go then where are we i've got 10
28:0810
28:09250 10 5 10 000 and 750 at 10 7 50 11 at 11 000 pound then in 250 11
28:17250 bid and five at 11 500 that looks
28:20cheap we'll make a phone call i think they want more 11 500 then for the first second third and
28:27last time
28:29five you've got to do quite a lot of negotiation a lot of talking yeah when you're making that call
28:35you just never know what the outcome is going to be by the time friday night comes i've had enough
28:39yeah it's like take me home put my pajamas on and don't talk to me the 11 and a half
28:45grand offer was
28:45rejected but the pickup sold for 12 and a half thousand at a later timed auction
28:52uh 61 hot kiss to willys g beautiful example well dressed up super thing whereabouts then start loads
29:00loads and loads of interest 10 11 12 13 13 13 13 5 14 000 14 5 14 500 only
29:0914 5 15 got you 15 15
29:12000 pound all done then 15 000 very provisional 15 we all know they're worth more but we try and
29:18put a
29:19deal together for you 15 provisionally only 15 so the reserve of 17 grand we've got an offer of 15
29:28grand
29:29they have a great following and if you get the right one in at the right price it'll sell
29:34robin took the 15 grand on offer and the jeep went to a military vehicle aficionado
29:42it's good afternoon how are you how are you nice to see you how are you keeping very well thank
29:49you
29:49good good paul has made the 10-minute trip to pick up the very orange case tractor
29:54it's here somewhere yes it's hiding in this in this shed it only had one owner one driver
30:02and what a wonderful wonderful thing i think it's great absolutely great anyhow what are we thinking
30:09money then miss hamilton where are we thinking apparently you said to charlotte three to four
30:15four thousand yeah but but what are you thinking at the end of the day oh god well no i
30:20think we're
30:20being advised by you well we have been totally advised by you right with it being a case with it
30:26being in
30:27your ownership all this time i think it wants guiding three to four uh let's hope we're pleasantly
30:34surprised eh it does seem a bit of a shame it stuck in the barn not ever really being used
30:38or seen
30:38well it needs to be somebody needs to be using it and getting a lot of enjoyment out yeah that's
30:44right yeah and i'm sure it's done plenty of work but of course it's clear to see in it it's
30:49been
30:50nurtured and looked after which is how it survived well we better get her out haven't we
30:57it's like a little allen's cave a day of reckoning a day of reckoning he's a bit of an expert
31:05at
31:06reversing as well isn't he oh crikey it is a machine isn't it quite how this is all going to
31:13work really
31:14but we'll see wow oh that's what we're after just 90 toes thanks we've got some funny noises going
31:32on today haven't we isn't that a bonnie old tractor though lovely yeah it is
31:44right well i shall hit the road i've got a long way to go you know oh yeah thank you
31:48very much
31:49paul no problem at all nice to see you so well it's very nice to see you excellent thank you
31:53very
31:53much thanks for coming across okay marvellous see you soon oh well bye chrace
32:03yeah bye and with all the blossom out well done 79 years yes it is a long time
32:30you know when it first came i didn't really like it and now the more i look at it the
32:34more i like it
32:35i don't know what it is i don't know why but the family bought it new to run a thresher
32:40which basically
32:41is combined isn't it really 1946 this was well advanced wasn't it it was almost too much wasn't
32:47it a tractor with a pto shaft and they still have them today and it's like you know from 60
32:53something
32:5380 year ago that was thought of and it's still working now so it was over engineered so so much
33:00put anything you want on the back of it it's either going to do like i don't know six thousand
33:05quid or ten thousand quid isn't it you know it could be anywhere so yeah i think i know it's
33:10a big
33:10bracket but it'd be somewhere in that bracket i would have thought
33:17oh this is a nice old tractor there i collected this here and it was purchased new back in 1946
33:25here in ryder just down the road very very special as you'd want to find one there we go uh
33:3118 19 2000
33:33pound bid then and away at 2000 lovely bit of history with the tractor there at 2000 pound bid at
33:392001
33:392-1 at 2000 2-2 it's still provisional malton we'll make your phone call we'll see what we can
33:45do nice if it stayed in malton it would be good yeah staying local there you go look yeah at
33:5022 then
33:50provisionally for the first second third and last time 2-2 malton hello is that marion it's
33:57jewell here at matthewson's we've got the bid at 2-2 yeah no that's lovely all right all done that's
34:04great thank you very much thank you bye bye they were happy to accept that well it's not going too
34:10far away it's going probably about another 10 miles west so lovely that's a really nice story isn't it
34:20little under 175 i believe that one in other auction news robin's motorbikes had a mixed reception
34:26up 1500 and that's very provisional at one the honda sold for 1850 in a timed auction you all know
34:35what they're worth thousand pound to start me one thousand pound eleven hundred eleven hundred twelve
34:40twelve hundred pound absolute bargain surely but the bantam had no takers and went back to leicestershire
34:47i need more what are you gonna do with that oh lord that's a bit interesting a bit quick no
34:53engine
34:54run on just about everything if you're paying the tank it'll run by the sound of it so 8 500
35:00what a
35:00bit of kit 9 000 250 got more machine we need a bit more money the kaiser truck also failed
35:06to attract
35:07a buyer and there's one other item that looks like it will never sell what we got here bloody rickshaw
35:15bloody thing's been around forever in it how long has this actually been here about five years i think
35:20they're good sellers you know you know we get a lot of this stuff abandoned on us you know someone
35:27brought it down and thought ah i'll bet that one might 500 quid and it's getting bit of 45 quid
35:33and
35:34it makes them realize then it ain't worth anything so leave it with them they'll sort it out i ain't
35:39got
35:39the legs for pedals anymore so it's of no interest to me whatsoever in fact to be perfectly truthful look
35:47it's a death trap isn't it you know you know what i want really rather than this sitting here i
35:52want
35:52this bit here clear that's what i want whoever owns it come and get it get it gone please
35:58derrick's wish was granted the rickshaw is no longer in yorkshire the owner came back to collect it
36:16when you're in a hummer you can do anything you want we can see over the hedges go anywhere you
36:23want
36:23up down dale across anything we're so lucky having this you know so lucky
36:30the resplendently blue hummer hasn't traveled much further than its hefty wheelbase to find a new home
36:37it stayed in yorkshire it's now owned by retired businessman john paley and he's loving it oh it's
36:45just like riding on air it's just pure elegance it's just pure comfort it's just so silky it just takes
36:53everything in its stride you know you feel absolutely nothing with the big tires and the air
36:59suspensions the ride comfortability and everybody said oh i can't believe i can't believe it john loves
37:07showing off his new purchase it's a main machine look at tires you know it just looks the pattern
37:14yeah today it's his grandkids connie will and jacob it is yeah it's like new in the living handles come
37:21off that's brilliant isn't it even the odd fault is easily sorted that's it that's it it's back on
37:31that's bloody typical and this is no short-term fling it's a long-term love affair that started when
37:40john hooked up with a friend who was a car dealer let me have a look at one of those
37:44hummers and as
37:45soon as i heard it as soon as i saw it just poised lovely i said right order me one
37:51and that was my
37:52first one within 2002 it was a black one i had that two or three years and i got a
37:58pickup one called a
37:59soot which had the bull bar on the front and then i woke up one morning and i realized i
38:06had eight
38:07cars and i thought why do i need eight cars and we had them all sold within a week everybody
38:13thought
38:14i'd gone bankrupt because i sold all these cars which i haven't but the hummer bug never totally
38:20disappeared and a trip to pickering revived it this hummer was sat there and i just walked around it
38:26opened the doors looked i said it's mine i'm having it simple as that the bug was well and truly
38:34back
38:34after buying the blue hummer he bought a black one to go with it it's cool isn't it yeah i
38:40mean it's not
38:40the first one but maybe not not might not be the last one either but uh definitely a head turner
38:47all the
38:47seats are like feel rock hard nice and comfy go to sleep if you're on a long car drive if
38:53you want they
38:54just go anywhere you can take them off road and go anywhere you want and people get out of your
38:58way
38:58so you feel like the boss it's great to look at on the drive but it's out on the road
39:06where john and
39:06the hummer are happiest a hummer well there's nothing like it it is to me the the vehicle
39:16oh i think i'm having a mid-life crisis even though even though i'm 87 so she's there if another
39:27one
39:27comes she is going i've always loved the look of the willies jeep and then me father he was in
39:46the
39:46army during the war and he said that he drove one and he said they were absolutely brilliant he said
39:53you
39:54could drive them anywhere the hotchkiss willies jeep which has stood in a civilian garage for the
40:01last few years has been reunited with some fellow military travelers new owner errol now has the
40:08chance to trundle through the fens that surround his home and ramsey in cambridgeshire with some
40:13nostalgic enthusiasts well you have to watch a road all the time especially around the fens
40:18because the roads are sinking and you'd soon be in the duke or wherever no it's a job to explain
40:25is
40:26just puts a smile on your face buying the jeep means errol can now team up with a gang of
40:32local
40:33aficionados mark chrissy and lindsay who have a vast amount of experience when it comes to military
40:39vehicles i love the noise and the smell of it i really do go in the camera as errol is
40:47finding out
40:47they take some handling when you're driving one of these you're really in contact with the road
40:52yeah you know when you're driving the modern car you can steer it with one finger if you like you
40:56know don't take your mind off the road or other drivers for a single second you get arnhem ass
41:01cheek one buttock goes to sleep if you've been driving it for too long and you keep shifting around
41:05in the seat trying to make a little bit more comfortable it's just a shame that dad weren't
41:08allowed to see that i've got one so like my grandson he loves anything to do with the second world
41:15war
41:15i'm going to take it to the the junior school where he is for for a day just so the
41:21kids can
41:22see in it and and everything it seems that perhaps accidentally errol has bought a fine example
41:29although there were teething problems a bit disappointed when i got there because i couldn't
41:33get behind the steering wheel well why how i come back and i had a word with mark i said
41:41i couldn't
41:43padding off the back of the seat that's why i've got no padding on the back of the seat how
41:49the hell
41:49did john wayne get energy good how did that happen the driving might not be about comfort but it's an
41:59experience all the same oh people always stop and turn and look at it put their hand up and wave
42:07the wife's been in it yeah yeah yeah she wasn't very keen to start with oh no no seat belts
42:13no airbags
42:15but when you're in you have to smile you're smiling because you ain't doing 100 mile now you're only
42:21doing 30 40 miles an hour but there's also a serious side to running around the fens in convoy
42:29when you ride these back rows in these vehicles you instinctively know you're retreading the path that
42:34americans did prior to d-day these roads were absolutely littered with these vehicles whenever
42:40i drive mine i mean i forever think of my uncle drove one in the desert 1942 in benghazi yeah
42:47and
42:47then got captured for the next umpteen years in prisoner of war camp you can't help but think about
42:53those things yeah i agree these are linked to remember these vehicles are a symbol of freedom
42:58there was a hard-fought freedom oh i love it to bits love it to bits yeah my grandson i
43:06took him out
43:07backed in his drive his mom come out and he said to his mom i hope granddad don't sell this
