00:25destination this evening Turks and Caicos Islands for more than 15 years an historic corruption
00:34case gripped the Turks and Caicos Islands a saga of power scandal and courtroom warfare now the
00:41dramatic fall has come on May 29th 2026 Justice Redringa Narayan entered a packed Supreme Court
00:49annex to sentence the island's former premier Michael Missick former minister McAllister Hansel
00:56and attorney Thomas Missick armed officers stood guard as emotions spilled across the courtroom
01:03some supporters wept others stood in stunned silence as the convicted men were taken into custody Michael
01:12Missick was sentenced to an effective four years and 26 days in prison Hansel received three years
01:19on bribery convictions while attorney Thomas Missick was sentenced to four years on money laundering
01:25counts with suspended sentences on additional charges news reporter Zoya Faisler of radio Turks
01:32and Caicos who covered the case extensively spoke with wider region from my perspective the message that
01:39these sentences send about political accountability and corruption in the Turks and Caicos Islands going
01:45forward is that they send a powerful reminder that public office carries immense responsibility and that those
01:54entrusted with public resources and authority are ultimately the ones accountable under the law and
02:00regardless of one's position influence or status the principle that no one is above the law remains
02:07fundamental to democratic governance the case began after a damning 2008 commission of inquiry exposed systemic
02:17abuse within the government triggering the creation of a special investigation and prosecution team what
02:23followed was a legal battle spanning more than a decade marked by delays judicial changes at the death of a
02:30former trial judge justice paul harrison in 2021 whatever once personal views of the case it was difficult to ignore
02:40the human dimension
02:41the impact on the defendants their families supporters and indeed the wider community but for many observers the moment was
02:50less about triumph for defeat
02:52and it was more about the culmination of a long legal process it marked a significant point in the country's
02:59political and
03:00judicial history and one that will likely be studied and debated for many years to come now the fight shifts
03:08to a court of appeal a bail hearing
03:10appeal is set for june 17th 2026 before justice alice york suhan all three men challenge their convictions and seek
03:20release from
03:21prison authorities in the Turks and Caicos Island are sounding the alarm over what they describe as a growing threat
03:29to the
03:29country's immigration and labor systems the ministry of immigration has issued an urgent warning after
03:36discovering counterfeit work permits and fraudulent immigration documents circulating across the island
03:42triggering what appears to be an intensifying crackdown officials say multiple fake permits have already been
03:50identified and used as supposed authorization for employment now the government is warning that anyone caught
03:57producing using using or facilitating the documents could face criminal prosecution heavy fines imprisonment and
04:05deportation as investigators move to protect the integrity of the territory's immigration system a caribbean
04:13travel revolution is here from july 1st 2026 citizens of guyana and barbados will travel between both countries

04:31independence regional leaders are calling the move a bold leap for caribbean integration
04:37expected to boost tourism trade and family connections while making travel cheaper and easier for ordinary citizens the initiative is
04:46also
