00:00Hello and welcome to highlights of the Friday stage, stage 7 of 9 in this year's 37th Giro d'Italia
00:07women,
00:08racing from Sorbolo Mezzani in Emilia-Romagna into Lombardia country and Salici Termi.
00:15A stunningly beautiful stage, again the weather good, and it should be a quieter day ahead of tomorrow's massive mountains
00:24clash.
00:26Would it be a sprint though? Would a breakaway survive? Or, somehow, would it turn into a general classification showdown?
00:34Well, we're about to find out.
00:37As always, getting in the breakaway on a day like this is the fair, particularly of the Continental team riders,
00:43and we had, well, three different groups all trying to get in the breakaway today.
00:47Five riders managed to make their break stick. Here they were, Chantal Pegolo of Isomatt Primack Victoria,
00:53Marilyn Vantagelov of Laboral Kutcher, Alison Jackson again, the Canadian champion for Saint-Michel Preference Home Uber 93,
01:03and Sarah Lucon. Then this happened. Big crash and taking down the race leader as well, Anna van der Breggen.
01:10There she is in the Malia Rosa on the deck and getting pushed back in.
01:14Teammates around her to help her too, but a big danger moment for the race leader, Anna van der Breggen,
01:20who has had everything go her way so far in this race after winning the time trial to Nevegaal.
01:26Well, Lidlertrak were pacing, but they were probably thinking more about an expected potential sprint finish for Elisa Balsamo.
01:35Anna van der Breggen was moving well. Less, more problems though, unfortunately, for Marilyn Rosa,
01:40who was also involved in that crash and struggling to, by the looks of it,
01:43to untangle her radio from her helmet strap to her. I don't know whether she'd had a helmet replacement.
01:48Quite possible in the carnage that ensued after that and the big, big chase to get back in touch.
01:53The five out front were still with a healthy lead. One minute 20 with 34k to go,
01:58and they were approaching the first and the only intermediate sprint point of the day in Zava Tarello.
02:05And here it was. It was Sarah Lucon of Top Girls Fasa Bortolo, just ahead of Alison Jackson and Gaia
02:12Segato as well,
02:13taking the two seconds. None of the seconds in there mattered too much for the general classification.
02:18Marilyn Frantagelouf was battling to try and stay with them, and this was our peloton.
02:29So another crash in an unexpected place as the riders get more and more fatigued as we approach this
02:35weak end of the conclusion of this year's 37th Giro d'Italia women.
02:40Marilyn Frantagelouf was just being reeled in by the peloton,
02:45and it was looking all the while like the breakaway was coming back too.
02:49Sarah Lucon, after a good day out in the break, left three riders up the road,
02:53Sarah Segato, Chantel Peguelo, and Alison Jackson,
02:57and they went to the top of that Queen of the Mountains point in Pietra Gavina together.
03:03Segato taking the points up there.
03:05This was the peloton coming through just 32 seconds down too,
03:09and it was looking very much like the reeling in of the breakaway was going to happen.
03:13However, there were a small number of riders who had other thoughts,
03:17and you can see them right here. Lucinda Brand had jumped across the gap,
03:21as had as well. Alison Jackson, Elisa Longo-Borghini trying to get time back on general classification.
03:27No obvious panic, though, from the teams behind.
03:31Don't forget, Elisa Longo-Borghini has won the last two editions of this race,
03:37and this was her move today to try and get some time back.
03:41It was never a massive gap, as you can see, with 3k to go.
03:4420 seconds of lead for the leading nine riders, as it was then, going to the finish.
03:49Elisa Longo-Borghini, the Italian champion on the front, driving,
03:53and of course, the breakaway riders knowing this was their golden ticket
03:56to get to the finish in front of these riders.
03:59We could see the Malia Rosa back there of Elisa Balsamo,
04:03looking at potential of another stage win,
04:05but up the road, her own lead-out rider, Lucinda Brand, was opening up.
04:09We've seen Brand do this for Balsamo on at least two occasions so far,
04:12but coming off her wheel, Celia Geri, the young French sensation,
04:16breaking clear off the wheel of Lucinda Brand,
04:19and the 20-year-old Celia Geri getting her stage win,
04:23and look how close the peloton were behind.
04:27Wow.
04:29Celia Geri getting a massive win on stage seven of this Giro d'Italia women,
04:35and she was delighted by it.
04:37After all that, no change on the general classification,
04:41and Anna van der Breggen, after her crash, being down on the road,
04:44goes into tomorrow's big mountains queen stage,
04:47knowing she's still in control.
04:50Elisa Balsamo didn't get to sprint today,
04:52but she will also live to fight another day this weekend.
04:56Anna van der Breggen, of course, the best climber in the race.
04:58Who will be the best climber after tomorrow's finish?
05:02It's going to be a big day tomorrow.
05:03Make sure you join us.
05:12Selia, first of all, congratulations.
05:14First win at the Giro, how do you feel?
05:16I'm really happy.
05:20I didn't think about it before the start.
05:23So I'm happy.
05:27When you decided to play at the attack,
05:30what was there in your mind?
05:32In fact, at the top of the boss,
05:35I accelerated a little bit for me to be able to place Demi in the right position in the descent.
05:42It's true that I went down a little bit quickly and we were a little lost.
05:46And then, I met with Persico.
05:51So at the moment, I thought, I might have made a mistake.
05:55And then, after that, it happened that Longo Borghini joined us, so I didn't have to run.
06:02But it's true that I didn't know what to think about the situation.
06:04It was a bit bizarre.
06:05And at the end, I was able to play tactically with aussi Brandt, who was there for the victory.
06:19So we had to stay calm in our head because we had to keep our nerves.
06:27But now, it's done.
06:29No big changes in the GC today.
06:32What could be the goal for tomorrow?
06:34Also looking for Demi to gain more in the GC.
06:59Merci.
07:01So, Anna, first of all, how are you after this scary crash?
07:04You have seen you and a lot of athletes in Boulder.
07:07Yeah, I think I'm quite okay.
07:08I got some wounds which you have after the crash, but I could go until the finish.
07:14So, that's good.
07:15So, looking at today's stage,
07:17things go as you expect, or maybe something different?
07:21Yeah, I'm going to say
07:23today the final was pretty exciting, of course,
07:26but for the general classification,
07:28not so much happened except for that Elisa,
07:30yeah, had a really good downhill.
07:33But a bit like expected, yeah.
07:35Looking at tomorrow's stage,
07:36the hardest stage of the Giro with the Colle delle Finestre,
07:38the plan, of course, is to keep the Maglia Rosa.
07:42Do you expect some changement in the DC, some attacks?
07:45I think everybody needs to go tomorrow if you, yeah, if you go for pink,
07:50then tomorrow is the most important day.
07:52So, the climb is really long.
07:54So, yeah, for me now, try to recover this evening and this night and see,
07:59probably I will be stiff tomorrow.
08:01But, I mean, if the legs are good, then you feel the legs more than whatever.
08:07So, yeah, hopefully tomorrow I can have a good day again.
08:11Thank you.
08:11Grazie.
08:12Elisa, first of all, how we went today?
08:14Can you tell us more about the crash?
08:15because we were very scared about what happened.
08:18Do you see something?
08:19Can you tell us more?
08:20Yes, I saw a really big crash,
08:22but luckily I was on the left side of the road,
08:25so I couldn't see what happened.
08:28But, yes, it was quite a big and scary crash,
08:30and I hope everyone is good.
08:32So, looking at today's stage,
08:35something went as we have said, something now.
08:38What can you tell us more about today's stage?
08:41Yes, I think at the beginning we also tried to be in the break,
08:45but then there was this break with a lot of time
08:48and Spratty and Fleur pulled the whole day again.
08:54And then, yes, on the climb, I was still in the first group
08:57and then in the downy, Lucinda was in a perfect group for us
09:01and so I think it was a great opportunity for her
09:04and then I was also well positioned for the sprint,
09:07but when I saw that, I mean, there was no way to catch them,
09:10so I just enjoy and hope for Lucinda.
09:12Hard times are coming tomorrow with this climb,
09:16the Colle delle Finestre,
09:17so the goal for you, of course, is to keep the red jersey
09:21and to face this, you know, tough part of the Giro.
09:24Yes, I think tomorrow is going to be a really hard day,
09:28but, yes, like, the big goal is to bring home this red jersey,
09:32so I will fight.
09:34Thank you.
09:34Grazie.
09:35Hello Isabella, still in white.
09:37How was today's race?
09:39Yeah, today was another long stage.
09:41There was a breakaway pretty early on that got quite a lot of time,
09:44so Spratty and Fleur did a really good job sitting on the front
09:47making sure the gap came down
09:49and then in the end Lucinda was in the break
09:52and, yeah, it was a good day for the team.
09:54Everyone made it across the line, so...
09:56Looking at tomorrow's stage,
09:58we will see, of course, some changes in the GC.
10:01it's going to be the GC day.
10:03What do you expect?
10:04Yeah, I think, yeah, it's going to change things a lot
10:06with the two climbs, especially finishing at the top of the mountain.
10:10So, yeah, it's going to be a hard day,
10:12but I'm looking forward to it.
10:13Looking at your team,
10:15the main goal, of course,
10:16is to keep that red jersey for Elisa,
10:19but also to, you know, gain places in the GC.
10:22What's the plan for the last part of the Giro?
10:25Yeah, I think just continue how we've been doing.
10:28It's going to be, yeah,
10:29like the first mountain finish tomorrow,
10:32so, yeah, I think it'll be a bit of a different race
10:34and then the following day just see where we are.
10:37Thank you.
10:38Good luck for tomorrow.
10:38Thank you.
