In this episode of Sweet Digs, we step inside designer Tyka Pryde’s light-filled Los Angeles loft, set in a former train station with soaring ceilings and rich architectural history. Blending her own designs with pieces from Black-led creatives she intentionally champions, Pryde creates a space that feels layered, expressive, and deeply aligned with her values — proving that great design is as much about purpose as it is about style. The tour features pieces from the Temi Coker x Walmart home collection, celebrating heritage and cultural expression through accessible décor. Shop the full collection here.

00:02Hi, I'm Tyka Pride. Welcome to my downtown LA loft.
00:10So I just moved in literally three days ago.
00:14I spent my first night in the apartment last night.
00:16I do production design and interior design
00:19and recently just launched a furniture collection.
00:21So this space is super inspiring for me
00:23and I just wanted a space where I could dream
00:26and work with my team.
00:28This used to be an old railway station in the 1900s
00:32and these are actually the old tracks.
00:34So it's a lot of history in this building.
00:36It's obsessed with the windows
00:38and as soon as I saw it I knew I had to live here.
00:42So something I teach people about online is my FAST formula.
00:46It stands for focal point, anchor, scale, and texture.
00:52So the focal point in this room is definitely my light.
00:54It's the star of the show.
00:55And then I anchored the space with this super graphic rug
00:59from the Temmie Coker collection at Walmart.
01:01And then lots of scale.
01:02I like the height of these plants, this super bushy fern.
01:06And then lots of texture in the space.
01:09This rug has a ton of texture in it.
01:11When I'm looking for pieces in my home,
01:12I try to find work that is super in alignment with mine.
01:17I think people would be really surprised at my process.
01:19Like I design furniture, but I also thrift.
01:22I go on Facebook Marketplace.
01:24I found amazing pieces from like Temmie Coker at Walmart.
01:27I just find stuff everywhere.
01:29Historically black led brands have not been spotlighted or are highlighted.
01:33I wanted authorship over like what gets to be created,
01:37what gets to exist, what we give value to, what's important to us.
01:42And I want more black designers in the design space.
01:46This light is my pride and joy.
01:48It's called the soul study light.
01:49It went super viral on social media.
01:52It is supposed to mimic sunrise and there's different variations of like sunset,
01:56but it's just super inspiring and it gives me really great light.
02:00And at night it gives off the most beautiful like orange warm golden hour glow.
02:06Definitely the use of color feels very me.
02:09I've always loved pink and purples and oranges and colors that remind me of the sunset.
02:14So I feel like the color story in here is very me.
02:18If storage is an issue for you,
02:20I suggest adding cabinets anywhere you can.
02:23Another great way is to use curtain walls.
02:25You can basically curtain off anything and create storage out of nothing.
02:29So this place has one tiny closet in the whole thing.
02:32So I had to make storage.
02:33So I put this curtain wall here so that when I get out of the shower,
02:37I can just change and have a little bit of privacy in here
02:41and then stick suitcases and anything ugly behind these curtains.
02:44When people come over, I can just throw it on back here.
02:49These are like over 2000 jewelry grade chains.
02:54I wanted to create something that was like the drama of a chandelier,
02:57but in a floor lamp.
02:58And it feels kind of like great Gatsby 1920s.
03:01So these are my little ladies.
03:03Looks like a woman wearing a ball gown.
03:05When I was a kid, I had no idea I was going to do this.
03:08I was always really creative and always like rearranging furniture in my room.
03:12But my first job was on a television set on a home renovation show.
03:17And that taught me about interior design.
03:19And then from there, I just like grew this really budding interior design career.
03:23So I never knew I would end up here.
03:25But I'm so, so thankful that I did.
03:26Thank you guys for coming.
03:28It's getting late. It's getting dark.
03:30It's time to go.
03:32I had so much fun with you, but it's time to go before you knock something else over.
03:35Thanks so much.
03:35I'll dad.
03:35Bye.
03:35Bye.
03:35Bye.
