00:00With ballots still being counted in California, there's still one crucial race too close to call.
00:05It's the race for the 6th Congressional District in the northern suburbs of Sacramento.
00:09This is a seat that Democrats drew to be safe for them when Proposition 50 passed last November.
00:15That was the gerrymandering resolution that Governor Gavin Newsom pushed after Texas redrew some of its congressional districts.
00:22And Gavin Newsom wanted to get rid of Republican Representative Kevin Kiley.
00:26But Kiley became an Independent and ran in the 6th District.
00:30And he won the California primary on Tuesday.
00:33The real race is for second place because if a Democrat makes the general election, Kiley would likely still lose.
00:39But right now, an unknown Republican, Michael Stansfield, is in second place with 22.2% of the vote.
00:46Democrats have split the vote between them and therefore none of them right now is in the top two.
00:52The closest is Richard Pan, a doctor and former state legislator, who is closely behind Stansfield with 21.2%
00:59of the vote.
01:00That's just an 1100 vote difference.
01:03And as ballots come in, Stansfield could find himself in third place and Pan could move up into second.
01:08But it's not a done deal, and Democrats could find themselves shut out of a safe seat that they drew.
01:15The implications are huge because every seat counts in the race for control of the House.
01:20And if this seat stays with the Republicans, or in this case with an Independent, Kevin Kiley,
01:26you could have a powerful voice for ending gerrymandering returning to Congress.
