00:00Thank you, Assemblymember Lackey. Assemblymember Wallace, you are recognized.
00:05Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Members, I rise today in strong opposition to ACA 8,
00:10not simply because of what it does, but because of what it represents.
00:14ACA 8 represents a tit-for-tat strategy. It's a reactive move that erodes our credibility,
00:20not just here at home but on the national and international stage.
00:24If we abandon the independent redistricting process that Californians created,
00:28we don't just lose a tool, we lose trust.
00:31Our Citizens' Redistricting Commission was born from voter demand for fairness and transparency.
00:36While drawing our current maps, the Commission held hundreds of public meetings,
00:40reviewed tens of thousands of comments, and drew maps that reflect people and communities,
00:45not politicians and their preferences.
00:47That's not just good governance, it's a model for the nation.
00:50Some point to Texas is a justification for this proposal.
00:54But California doesn't follow. We lead.
00:57We don't mere dysfunction. We set the standard.
01:00Former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger called gerrymandering the cancer of politics.
01:05He championed the Commission because he believed in a system that puts voters first.
01:10That belief still matters. I urge you no vote.
01:13You.
01:14You're welcome.
01:15You're welcome.
01:16You're welcome.
01:17You're welcome.
01:18Yeah.
01:19You're welcome.
01:21I'm not sure.
01:22We're welcome.
01:23We're welcome.
01:24You're welcome.
01:25You're welcome.
01:26I wanna see you.
01:28I regret that we're doing these two studies on the map.
