00:00While ballots are still being counted, there are already some surprises.
00:03Now, we already know that Republican Steve Hilton has qualified for the general election
00:07for governor against Democrat Javier Becerra, and in the race for Los Angeles mayor, challenger
00:12Spencer Pratt has qualified for the general election against incumbent Karen Bass.
00:17But here are four surprises we didn't anticipate.
00:20First, voters in major cities across California rejected new taxes.
00:24That's a new sales tax increase in LA County, a second home tax in San Diego,
00:30and an overpaid CEO tax in San Francisco.
00:32Second, billionaire Tom Steyer failed to buy his way into the general election in the governor's race.
00:38He spent over $200 million of his own money and came up short once again,
00:43just as he did in the 2020 presidential race.
00:45Third, Representative Kevin Kiley might return to Congress,
00:49even though Gavin Newsom's Proposition 50 redrew his congressional district to make it almost impossible.
00:54The runner-up in the race for California's 6th congressional district happens to be a Republican
00:59because there were too many Democrats in the race.
01:01So Kiley could face a Republican in the general election, making it likely that he would return to Congress.
01:07Finally, fourth, the Palisades fire played a huge role, not just in Spencer Pratt's outstanding result in LA,
01:13but also in other races.
01:15Ben Allen, the state senator who represents Pacific Palisades,
01:18has qualified for the general election for state insurance commissioner.
01:21And city council member Tracy Park, who represents Pacific Palisades in Los Angeles City Council,
01:26has won re-election outright.
01:28Those are some surprises.
01:29Stay tuned to the California Post for more results as they come in.
