01:57Come on, let's go!
01:57Slave Coast
02:04But the interior of Africa remains a mystery to white men
02:08The jungle, the climate, the tropical fevers
02:13The hostility of the natives, sometimes
02:18Insects
02:19The fakes
02:21So many barriers and dangers
02:28The progress of the 19th century
02:30They will give to the Europeans
02:31The desire and the means to explore Africa
02:33In England, Sir Joseph Banks
02:35Founded the association for the discovery of Africa
02:40One-third of the inhabited land
02:41is unknown to us today
02:43And especially in Africa
02:44Everything remains to be discovered
02:46Out of duty to science
02:47We need to clear these territories
02:50The association will finance the initial breakthroughs.
02:53Towards the interior of the African continent
02:56The Scotsman, Bungo Park
02:58Reached Niger
03:04But the river is not easily tamed.
03:14It's the turn of a young Frenchman
03:17Who has learned Arabic and the Quran?
03:18To leave Senegal disguised as a pilgrim
03:25René Caillé will be the first European
03:27To reach the legendary city of Timbuktu
03:30In the middle of the desert
03:39There will be many more explorers.
03:41But the most extraordinary of them
03:44It will probably be the Scotsman David Livingstone
03:48At the age of 26
03:49With his degrees in medicine and theology in hand
03:51He lands in South Africa
03:53He will establish a mission there, north of Kourouman
03:56And the local pastor's daughter will become his wife.
04:03All human wisdom comes from the Lord
04:10But the towns that are fighting against the English
04:13They view the mission with suspicion.
04:25We're going to have to leave here
04:28Crossing the Kalahari Desert will be dangerous
04:43Let's go!
04:46Let's go!
04:50Let's go!
05:06Lake N'Gami!
05:08We are the first to see this show
05:12The first ones!
05:29Going any further would be far too dangerous for the children.
05:32It's best if you take them back to England.
05:34I will accompany you to the cape
05:39Separated from his family, Livingstone continues his explorations
05:52Oh! That was the last one
05:54Animals imported from Europe are particularly vulnerable to sleeping sickness
05:58Caused by the Tsetse fly
06:06The blood is flowing, we're going to get through it
06:08Come on !
06:29We're going to land there
06:43What? A slave convoy, but that's forbidden.
06:51We need to help you, it's unfortunate.
06:53Go get me the distress flares
06:58Let's go!
07:28They put us in chains and beat us.
07:31You take away our chains and give us food, who are you?
07:35Doctor Livingstone, and I come from far away, from England, far beyond the sea
07:40You saved us, so you are our friend
07:42We are Makololos
07:44And this is our country.
07:45Come with us, Doctor Livingstone
07:47Our king will be happy to meet you
07:50Are you going, are you going?
08:01Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes
08:41I present you to the king,
08:43the one who saved us from the slave traders.
08:46I am... Is he, are you, king of the Makololon tribe?
08:49You have helped my people, so I would like to help you too.
08:53I'm listening, tell me what you want.
08:55What I want is to get to know your country,
08:57its rivers, its mountains, to build roads,
08:59to bring you our civilization and end slavery.
09:04If, starting from here, I could reach the ocean,
09:07The ocean is a sea a thousand times larger than your lakes.
09:10This would be beneficial for all your people.
09:13You will have provisions as well as an escort of my best warriors.
09:18Livingstone will take seven months to travel the two thousand kilometers
09:21which separate it from Luanda, the capital of Portuguese Angola.
09:25He will cross the Saint-Rivière stream.
09:27But the road will not be as easy as he hoped.
09:31And every step will be an extraordinary feat.
09:33Finally, here he is in Luanda.
09:44What are these louses?
09:54Oh, I can't take it anymore.
09:55Ten centries, malaria, crocodile.
09:59Oh, a hospital.
10:01And that's perfect.
10:10And after three months of rest?
10:12But what's going on?
10:15Oh, all that wasted time.
10:23Hi, boss.
10:24I've made a big decision.
10:26We are going to cross all of Africa from one end to the other.
10:29Like that.
10:30Oh !
10:31It will be easy by canoe.
10:36But first, we must return to the king of the Makololos.
10:42We will cross Africa from one sea to the other,
10:45from sunset to sunrise.
10:48This time, you'll need even more men and ivory.
10:50to pay for your passage.
10:52You'll have all of that.
11:13It's the smoke that's growling.
11:17A waterfall.
11:18It's enormous.
11:19Quickly, towards the riverbank.
11:25Come, come.
11:43I am building these Victoria Falls
11:45in honor of our queen.
11:47So.
12:02Hello ?
12:02Hello ?
12:03It's a long road.
12:12Oh, the slave traders have been here again.
12:18Yes.
12:19So, we're going to...
12:20Eh ?
12:21Hmm!
12:24Hmm!
12:25Hmm!
12:26Hmm!
12:26Hmm!
12:27Hmm!
12:27Hmm!
12:27Hmm!
12:27Hmm!
12:28You have to pay to pass through its territory.
12:30Well, bring the ivory.
12:54Here you go, chief.
12:55A gift for you.
12:59Let's go.
13:01Come on.
13:02What is it? I want to see.
13:05Ah!
13:06Ah!
13:06No, but...
13:08Hmm!
13:10Hmm!
13:13After eight months, Livingstone, exhausted and ill,
13:16Kellyman wins on the east coast.
13:18He was the first European to cross Africa from west to east.
13:23After a fifteen-year absence, England does it as a national hero.
13:28Livingstone!
13:32Livingstone!
13:34Livingstone!
13:35And to open up this beautiful country, take advantage of Africa's many riches, and put an end to slavery,
13:41We need to bring civilization, Christianity, and commerce to this continent.
13:47Promoted to consul of East Africa, Livingstone will return there with the mission of opening a navigable waterway.
13:53on the Zambezi.
14:00How slow, slow, too slow!
14:04Yes, it's very pleasant, it's excellent, yes.
14:06Yes, it's very pleasant, it's very pleasant, it's very pleasant.
14:52This boat is not practical, really not practical.
15:12England is offering it to you; it's the latest in technology.
15:16This time, we're going to see what we're going to see.
15:18Yes, indeed, we'll see.
15:32This is what Africa does with the latest technology.
15:36Which nevertheless allowed us to discover the beauties of Lake Niasa.
15:48Well, welcome back, gentlemen.
15:55Well, you're not waiting around, are you?
15:58London only sends me cowards, Captain, weaklings.
16:02So I've had enough, I'm going back, but alone, with my porters and my buffaloes.
16:11We would love to go back with you, doctor, but we are very old now and very tired.
16:16So if you want, our sons Suzy and Chouma will go with you.
16:38And Livingstone will disappear, swallowed up by the purchase.
16:44Europe is worried about its hero, but it is an American newspaper that will take action to find him.
16:56Stanley, only you, my dear fellow, are capable of finding David Livingstone.
17:00This will be the scoop of the century.
17:03But difficult, Mr. Bennett, and dear, very dear, my methods will not be those of Livingstone.
17:08You'll have everything you need, Stanley, and more.
17:12Our goal is to find Livingstone, and as quickly as possible.
17:14I will not accept any breaks or delays, and as for deserters, they will be very severely punished.
17:19Did you understand me correctly?
17:21Yes, of course. You heard right, a big lazybones.
17:25The New Amoisis are the best carriers there are. No one has ever complained about that.
17:29Yes, Oujiji, it was in this region that my men told me they had heard about him.
17:34It's a thousand kilometers away, and the road is not easy.
17:45It's a thousand kilometers away, and the road is not easy.
17:46Whoa!
17:52World guardian!
17:52And the world helmet!
18:00We need to know how to take advantage of the norm.
18:02Ahead !
18:41Good quality merchandise! Excellent!
18:45I'm looking for a white doctor, does that ring a bell?
18:49Yes, in Oudjiji, there is an old man with a white beard!
18:53Oudjiji, that's it! That's right! Only 500 kilometers to go!
18:57Let's go, we're off again!
19:01Stand up, let's keep going!
19:06The men are very tired, Chief! A little rest will do them good! At least, I think so!
19:15When we find Livingstone, we'll rest! And there will be a reward for everyone!
19:20But now we're moving forward! And faster than that!
19:24Finally, they arrive in Oudjiji!
19:35Everything is too tired!
19:45I don't know the last name!
19:48You're going to get angry!
19:49At your invitation!
19:52No last name!
19:53Not all at once.
19:53Not all at once.
19:54Not all at once!
19:55Not all at once.
19:55Not all at once.
19:58Attention, attention, this is where a famous phrase will be uttered.
20:02Dr. Livingstone, I presume
20:04Yes, it's me
20:08Doctor, I am happy to shake your hand
20:11And what about me?
20:24Hey, you're a luxury traveler!
20:26I was given the means to do so
20:28In Europe, there is a lot of concern for you, Doctor, are you aware of that?
20:32Well, it's about time, my supplies will be exhausted in two weeks.
20:37Well, we'll be able to make the return trip together.
20:40But what about the return?
20:41I'm going to take you back to England, Doctor.
20:43Know this, young man: when I want to return to England, I won't need anyone.
20:50Okay, okay, if you want to stay, nobody can force you.
20:53But wait, I have something for you, here are my notes from the last few years
20:57Take them, and if something were to happen to me, all would not be lost.
21:02But why don't you come back with me?
21:04You have given me back my strength and hope, young man, and my place is here.
21:08And above all, I still need to find the sources of the Nile.
21:12Come on, kids, let's go again
21:21But Livingstone won't go very far
21:24Ill, he gets lost in the middle of the rainy season.
21:45Oh, there it is!
22:06Livingstone Moore, Stanley will take up the mantle
22:08And to mount the most impressive expedition that Africa had ever known
22:128 tonnes of equipment distributed among 360 carriers
22:16Then he will explore the Congo
22:19That's the Lualabar River, isn't it?
22:20He throws himself into the Congo
22:22Boss, half the men have already deserted and we're far from everything
22:26With the Lady Alice on the water, it'll be a breeze.
22:28And then Tipu Tipu will help us
22:30How can you trust that slave trader, huh?
22:33As long as he's there, the porters won't desert.
22:39Come on, get in!
23:30But when the river calms down, other problems arise.
23:44We frighten them; they've never seen a white person here, nor a boat.
23:48I'm going to give them a good reason to be afraid.
23:52At my command, fire!
23:59Stanley would fight the natives 32 times.
24:01Inciting terror on the Congo River
24:03His exploits earned him the nickname Boulamatari, the rock breaker.
24:08Those people will know what it costs to attack us
24:11And the journey will continue in this way all the way to Boma, on the Atlantic.
24:23Oh, you're well dressed.
24:30We are tired, very tired.
24:33We come from Zanzibar
24:35999 days of hell to reach the coast
24:38The feat will have repercussions
24:40This now-open Africa holds many riches that the nations of Europe will fight over.
24:45You have to be the first to arrive, so everyone finds themselves...
24:47It's a race to see who can plant their flag the fastest.
24:56Stanley returned to the Congo and founded the Belgian Congo
25:00Cameroon, another Briton, will give his name to Cameroon
25:05Pierre Savornian de Bratza will found Bratzaville
25:08Yes indeed, all explorers like to immortalize their name
25:12Africa, unfortunately, will find itself exploited in ways often far removed from Livingstone's civilizing dream.
25:18Ah, Africa, that continent which was once so mysterious
25:28The explorers
25:32Discovering the world, they made the earth
25:34Rondre, these synopataires
25:37They will still find ways to forge their own paths.
25:40And then offer them to the souls
25:42Like offering a beautiful apple
25:45To you, to us, to me
25:47I believe
