00:06Hey everyone, what we're going to work on right now is some double bass beat creativity
00:11and how we're going to do that is by playing a couple different hand patterns on top of the feet
00:17the first one being a paradiddle, which is right-left-right-right, left-right-left-left
00:23and the second being an inverted paradiddle, which is right-left-left-right, left-right-right-left
00:30so for these patterns, the right hand will be played on either the ride or the bell of the ride
00:35and the left hand on the snare. So we're going to build up one step at a time. First we'll
00:40practice
00:41hands only, then we'll practice the hands on top of the feet, and then we'll kind of expand on it
00:47by me demonstrating a couple different ways to make it groove even more, and then finally I'll
00:53show it to you within context of a straight beat. So let's get to it.

08:58I recently came up with a pretty cool hand technique exercise
09:00that I want to share with you all.
09:02It involves double strokes, triple strokes, and single strokes.
09:07Now, if any of you are into working out
09:09or have done any sort of conditioning exercises before,
09:14then you might be familiar with a concept called interval training,
09:17which basically involves periods of going all out
09:20and then periods of really reduced work going really easy
09:24and you go back and forth, back and forth over a period of time.
09:27And what this exercise is, is basically kind of like
09:30the hand exercise version of interval training
09:33where the double strokes are our easy section
09:36and then the triple strokes and the single strokes are the all out section.
09:41So, we go back and forth. We go doubles, triples, doubles, singles.
09:46So, it would be like...
09:50Triples.
09:53Doubles.
10:01So, you want to warm up and then you work up to a speed
10:03where you can go back and forth for a good five minutes.
10:07And over the course of that time, you'll accumulate a lot of work.

52:01going back and forth between a slow pattern and an all-out pattern slow
52:05pattern and all-out pattern so here's how it goes down there's two two
52:09obviously two groups to this the first measure is sixteenth notes straight
52:14sixteenth notes for right for left for right for left accenting the one two
52:21three and four like this second measure in the faster measure is five paradiddle
52:33dittles which is right left right right left left and on the fifth one you add
52:44one more double that makes the full measure complete so it sounds like this
53:00I'm going to accent the first note of each paradiddle dittle I notice that when you
53:09finish up the measure you'll be ending with two rights so you start the next
53:16group with your left hand and the left hand leads so it's and the same thing with
53:25the paradiddle dittles again
53:34there you'll end with two lefts and you start with your right so you'll be
53:37starting one group will all start with your right and then it'll flip around and
53:41you'll be with your left hand so we go back and forth back and forth and we'll do
53:45now is show you some up-close demonstrations starting really slow to
53:49make sure you got the pattern down and we're working our way up to about 200
