00:00Hey, this is Brian Frazier-Moore.
00:01So I want to run you guys through something, a song that I play with Justin Timberlake.
00:08And he, it's called Can't Stop the Feeling.
00:10You might have heard of the song.
00:12But I just want to run through this groove with you and the particulars of this song.
00:17You know, when I first played the song, you know, I thought I had it and everything.
00:22And then he would come over and say, hey, this hi-hat opens on this part.
00:26And make sure you're in, all of a sudden, such a simple song became very detailed, okay?
00:33So I want to run it through, run through it with you guys.
00:36The first section, of course, if you know the song, starts with a hi-hat, all right?
00:41But this hi-hat, 16th hi-hat, but where the hi-hat opens up was crazy to me.
00:48So let's check the first part out, all right?
00:50So.
00:51One, two, three, four.
00:56Three, four, five, five, five, six, six, seven, eight, eight, eight, eight.
01:11All right, so if you notice, we're accenting on the down.
01:18All right, which is very important.
01:20You know, that's how the sample was, so we want to duplicate it as close as possible.
01:25And where the hi-hat opens, alright, alright, so that's the first part.
01:50And then when the beat comes in, I'll just go from where the beat actually comes in after
01:58the hi-hat, and then later we'll tie them all together, alright, so.
02:23Alright, so, if you notice, in this groove, it's like, okay, it's pretty straightforward,
02:28the kick is going, the snare is there, the hats are still there, but the hats have a
02:34kind of, still with the hi-hat opening at the same place as the intro, alright.
02:47So, it's easy, but it's easy to forget, you know, once you transfer from the intro to
02:54the groove.
02:55So, let's take the hi-hat intro into the groove, alright.
03:00One, two, three, four.
03:02One, two, three, four.
03:06One, two, three, four.
03:32One, two, three, four.
03:38Alright.
03:40So, that's pretty much the standard.
03:43That's pretty much what's happening in the original song.
03:47So what I like to do, using the same methods as if you've seen the other lessons with me,
03:52I always like to take the groove, add a little more into it.
03:57So, the best thing for me to do is to grab things that's already on the track, alright.
04:02So, if I have this straight beat, and some people say, I don't want to play this straight
04:07beat, you know, neither do I, so, but you have to be very careful in how you add extras.
04:13So, I always attach myself to bass, keys, whatever is, arp sounds, or guitar lines, whatever
04:21is going in the track, I attach myself to it so that I'm safe, at least I'm not playing
04:26a rhythm that is completely not in the song or the vibe of the song.
04:32So, if you know the song, you know that the bass goes,
04:45So, with that in mind, I'm going to play the groove again, alright, just so you can see
04:50the extras or whatever that I add to the groove, okay, just from the beat section, alright.
05:18Alright, so you can hear a boom, boom, boom, a-dum, da-da, ba-dum, da-dum, da-dum,
05:24all right, so all of a sudden your extras or whatever you want to add in becomes the vibe
05:42of the song, alright, so let's play the intro into the beat with the salsa on it, alright.
05:51So, here we go.
