00:02I wanted to come and talk to you about some things I do when I'm warming up.
00:06When it's time to do the show, do the clinic, or whatever it may be,
00:11these are things that help me out, okay?
00:14First, with my hands, I start on my hands to try to stretch as much of this as possible.
00:20You know, I don't know what this is called, but whatever this is, is important.
00:25With exercises, stretching my hands like this, all right?

00:38All of these things are good things to loosen up these muscles,
00:43all these things that you need.
00:47Overheads.
00:50If you're an old guy like me, you need these type of things.
00:54All right?
00:56So once we got this squared away, we'll do a couple of things with my feet.
01:03And I'll just show you a little bit.
01:05So if I'm standing up, and you can see my feet,
01:12I'm basically just up and down without falling over.
01:20But I'm pretty much up and down to stretch all of these muscles in my legs,
01:24to get loose, to get my muscles and my blood warmed up, all right?
01:28So you can do that for a couple of minutes.
01:31And then I sit down at the kit, all right?
01:33And then it's time to get loose mentally as well, warming up mentally,
01:39to be in a clear space.
01:42Everything's beautiful, no stress, all right?
01:45So then I grab my sticks, and what I'll do is I'll start with a hi-hat.
01:50And I'm just doing single strokes just to get my hands loose,
01:55to get my body loose and my mind going with everything.
01:58So.
02:03All right.
02:04Now I'll do this in two different patterns.
02:16All right, so I'll do these two patterns back and forth
02:19for maybe a period of, no exaggeration, five minutes, all right?
02:25A good five minutes for me, so.
02:45Now as we go along with this pattern right here, I might speed it up.
02:50I might slow it down for a balance and precision.
02:54I might take the faster section, singles of them, and continue that.
02:59So let's try that.
03:18All right, and so on, and you can experiment.
03:21I'm sure you guys will come up with some amazing ways on how to flip that, okay?
03:26And for my feet, also before I go to that, this pattern right here,
03:32I implement around the whole kit, all right?
03:35So I might go for the first pattern.
03:40I might go.
04:04All right.
04:05So that helps me to get my muscles moving around this way, going around the whole kit,
04:10get all this old man back moving around the side, all right?
04:14And so then I'll move to my kick drum as well.
04:19And this is interesting because for my kick drum, it's very simple.
04:23It's a double, but kind of like a shuffle, all right?
04:27This helps with loosening up all of this area right here, all right, which is very important
04:33for me.
04:34So I might start with one, two, three, and...
04:45All right, now the key to this, for me personally, is once I start doing that kick drum, sometimes
04:52your anxiety takes off, it starts sounding good, it starts feeling good, and you start
04:57to tense up, so for me being tense is kind of like the enemy, all right?
05:02So I try to do everything relaxed so I have complete control.
05:07So while you're doing this, this double, try to relax as much as possible.
05:12So let's try it, okay?
05:14One, two, three, four.
05:30All right, now that's the first part of it, and we'll take everything that we did from
05:35the hi-hats as far as speed, as far as slowing down, as far as everything that we did here,
05:42and we'll implement that into the kick drum.
05:44So we'll try this, and we'll try it at a little faster tempo, all right, each time that you
05:49get it into your spirit and your soul, speed it up a little more, you get that, slow it
05:54down a little more, this way we have complete control, our muscles are loose and we're ready
05:59to play the gig.

06:38These are things that I do when I sit down.
06:40I'm on tour.
06:41And I might come up to the kit early in the dressing room

06:48And I might sit at the kit and just do little things
06:51And start to implement them into together
