00:00Hey guys, this is Brian Fraser Moore.
00:02So in this section, I want to talk to you about groove, okay, and how you can build it,
00:09how you can take the base of something, of a groove, and build it into whatever you want it to
00:15be
00:16or whatever your boss wants it to be or whatever you feel, all right?
00:19So I want to start with something, it's called a four-on-a-floor groove.
00:23I'm going to take a four-on-a-floor groove and I'm going to play it so it gets in
00:28our system
00:28and then I'm going to start to implement little things here and there to build it, just ideas.
00:34I just want to give you guys some ideas of certain things you can do, all right?
00:39So here's the groove.
00:59Thank you.
01:39All right, so just on that note, I started first simple, four-on-a-floor groove,
01:46and a lot of times what I do is I try to make my hi-hats speak.
01:51In the business that I am, snare and kicks are always important to be as true to what it is.
01:58So I use that to implement in my own playing.
02:01So I'll start with a groove, then I'll start to make the hi-hat speak a little while keeping the
02:06snare and kick consistent,
02:08and then my kick might have a double to it, just to give it a little push or a little
02:16more personality while my snare is really just there.
02:20So I'll give you another quick example of that, all right?
02:23One, two, three.
02:26One, two, three.
02:54All right, so as you can see there, adding hi-hats and a little kick, give it some more oomph,
03:02okay?
03:03As we say oomph, I don't know if we say that, but I just said it.
03:07All right, so another groove I would like to show you is I would like to go, I was on
03:13tour with Janet Jackson and this one groove,
03:16this song called Control, which was really crazy, a really crazy pattern.
03:22So I would like to go through that and show you once again going from the groove and the things
03:28that you can add into that groove, all right?
03:32So I'll give you the regular pattern of the song first, all right?
03:37So it goes like this.
03:37One, two, three, four.
03:40One, two, three, four.
03:40One, two, three, four.
03:52One, two, three, four.
03:58The daka um ah would be the snaps and the clap, just so you know.
04:04So this groove is crazy, so I want to show you the groove, I want to slow down this groove
04:09and to show you exactly what's going on inside, okay?
04:14First part.
04:27Alright, so.
04:43Alright, I'll do it a little faster, so we can see in contact.
04:46One, two, three, four.
05:06Alright.
05:08Alright.
05:09So with a groove like this, that's already pretty much crazy, I still try to find certain
05:15ways to enhance it live or if I'm practicing or if my boss allows me.
05:21So let's, I'll just play it through a couple times and start to add in some things so you
05:27can get an idea.
05:28Alright?
05:29Here we go.
05:29Alright.
05:58One, two, three, four.
06:07Alright.
06:09So just little things in my line of business, just little things matter.
06:14They make a big impression.
06:17So if you can sneak them in, in between.
06:40Alright.
06:41So this is something that I do a lot within grooves.
06:45I try to grab little stuff here, little accents here, get in the way, get out the way.
06:50Alright?
06:51And I'll show you guys one more from another artist that I work with.
06:56His name is Justin Timberlake.
06:57And this style, this song I want to focus on is Cry Me A River.
07:04So what happens is, it's this whole phase of what they call these Timberland drums and we've
07:13had a title for it before it was named that, but this is the most popular title.
07:18So these Timberland-ish kind of drums, all that kind of stuff.
07:2630 seconds in between.
07:28So I want to go there for a second and show you the bass groove of this song, it's called
07:36Cry Me A River.
07:36So this is the bass.
07:39One, two, three, four.
07:56All right, so this is kind of the bass of the song.
08:00This is where it lives.
08:02And I want to play, once again, I want to play it and just start to implement more ideas
08:10in between while I'm still holding the groove down.
08:14All right, so check this out.
08:17One, two, three, four.
08:18One, two, three, four.
08:23One, two, three, four.
08:27One, two, three, four.
09:04¡Gracias!
09:19...when you're playing these grooves.
09:21So on this particular song, let me go through just a little of the things that I did here, just
09:26to give you an idea.
09:27So...
10:06Alright, so this method overall, hopefully it helps you.
10:11It helps me a lot when I'm playing grooves to keep it interesting, to keep the creative juices flowing.
10:17Alright, so enjoy.
