00:08So now we'll move over to the left hand. In the left hand we'll start out with this famous push
00:13pull that you may have seen Buddy Rich use in one of his incredible drum solos.
00:25So this one we're going to use a bit of pushing forward like this and then pulling back. Now to
00:32get the push motion happen we have to start here in this position where our fingers are now curled up
00:37on the stick and as we push down into the stick you're going to extend those fingers.
00:43You can also bend your wrist to make that happen and also turn the radius and ulna bones, the forearm.
00:51So here's your push motion.
00:57The pull motion comes like that when you pull these top two fingers and the bottom two fingers together like
01:06that to create the pulling stroke and then you can move your hand back into that starting position.
01:11So push, pull, push, pull.
01:17Now this motion, this kind of staccato one is one that you can actually use on a surface that doesn't
01:25have much rebound.
01:28But if you're playing on a snare drum you can utilize that rebound. So you can actually practice those motions,
01:34the push and the pull and try to include the rebound and feel the rebound of the snare when you
01:42play those motions.
01:44At this tempo you can really see how I'm letting the stick bounce with every push and pull movement. Keep
01:51the grip loose and do your best to smooth out the transitions between the push and pull. This will allow
01:58you to utilize rebound and have total control at higher tempos.
02:03Now most people watching the video up to this point are not going to be able to learn this drum
02:08technique. Now here's why. It's not because you didn't learn the motions. I just showed you everything you need to
02:14know to play and learn this drum technique.
02:16What it requires though if you want to actually see results is that you show up every day. That you
02:22be consistent. And the most important thing you can do to develop any drum technique, whether it's a push pull
02:29technique, it's improving your double stroke, it's finally unlocking a molar group of three, whatever it is, it all relies
02:37on two things.
02:38Your ability to observe what is happening and then your ability to critique your motions and pick out those details.
02:48If you can do those two things and you can show up every day and do the work, then you
02:54will learn this drum technique.
02:55I encourage you to not put a timeline. Don't put two weeks or a month or even a year as
03:01a goal. Just have it as I will learn this technique eventually. Doesn't matter about the time. Your goal should
03:07be to show up every day.
03:08So showing up every day is key. But also the other thing that is key is having a good study
03:15tool. Just like the master painters would do what's called a study piece. To study another painting, they copy it.
03:21We're going to do the same thing when we study drum technique.
03:24You want to have a recording that you can use as your study tool so that you can film yourself
03:30from the same angle and watch back and then be able to critique yourself that way.
03:34That's why in my technique course, The Art of Efficiency, I included video loops for every single drum technique so
03:42that you can do that.
03:44Again, if you get that technique course and you don't put in the time, you don't use those video loops,
03:49you're not going to see any progress.
03:52Show up every day. Be consistent. And the main two things that I mentioned earlier, become good at observation, noticing
03:59details, and critiquing yourself.
04:01If you're interested in that course or you want to see what it's all about, I'll put the link in
04:06the description and I'll drop it in the comments.
04:08Alright, thanks for watching this video and I hope it was useful for you.
