Chateau DIY - Season 11 - Episode 06
Transcript
00:01Across France, there are thousands of glorious chateaux.
00:06Many have been forgotten and abandoned.
00:11Okay!
00:12Now, they are being brought back to life by adventurous owners...
00:17I'm coming, Brian.
00:18You've got to be 50% mad and 50% brave.
00:22...who are taking on the ambitious challenge...
00:25This is going to take a while.
00:27...of restoring these timeless...
00:30...treasures...
00:30I think I'm going to have to make a big hole.
00:32I thought this would be a doddle.
00:34I've got no idea what I'm doing.
00:35...into incredible new homes...
00:38Wow!
00:39Goodness me!
00:41Impressed!
00:42...and thriving businesses.
00:442022, direct from the chateau.
00:47Oh, this is great!
00:48...there'll be triumphs...
00:50Woo-hoo, look at that!
00:52...and setbacks.
00:53You never know when you drill a hole around here
00:56whether you're going to get something solid or not.
00:58But however tough the going gets...
01:01It's at times like this, I wish I knew what I was doing.
01:04...those who make the move...
01:07...get to live like kings and queens in their very own castle.
01:16Today, a smashing wedding project requires major renovation.
01:24I've just broken the glass.
01:27Two panes of glass I've broken.
01:30While magic's in the air for this chatelain.
01:34I sadly missed my opportunity to go to wizarding school,
01:37so I like to mix potions up in my spare time.
01:41And a DIYer...
01:43...takes on a 14th century challenge.
01:47I don't know if they've ever had glass then.
01:49Been there since before Henry VIII was...
01:52...trying to take this part of France.
01:59A stone's throw from the town of Cognac in Western France
02:04lies the beautiful 19th-century Château de Brivee.
02:12Boasting 25 rooms...
02:17...5 outbuildings...
02:19...and a swimming pool...
02:22...amongst 35 acres of parkland.
02:26It's home to antique dealers Sarah and George...
02:30...and their children Tati and Alexi.
02:35The couple bought the property in 2011 for £415,000...
02:42...and now run it as a luxury wedding venue.
02:46We absolutely adore doing weddings.
02:49The smiles and the joy that we give to people is...
02:53You can't beat it, really.
02:55We go above and beyond so that they feel spoilt,
02:58they feel at home, they feel that we're one of the family.
03:01And that's lovely.
03:08Just over an hour's drive from Bordeaux,
03:12the Château is a former Cognac distillery.
03:15And four years ago, Sarah and George transformed two of the cellars
03:20from unloved dumping grounds
03:23into atmospheric wine and Cognac tasting rooms.
03:27Oh, wow, Georgie.
03:29Come in.
03:30Oh, my God, oh, that's so, so fabulous.
03:35Wow, that's really nice.
03:36But slightly bugging me is maybe we should go through to the next vaulted cellar
03:40and make it three.
03:42Now, with the wedding business booming and daughter Tati,
03:46recently trained as a florist, they have a new plan.
03:53We're opening up the old butler's bedroom in the cellar,
03:57which we haven't touched since we've been here, 16 years or so,
04:00to make it into a workshop for Tatiana's florals
04:04for all the weddings that we've got coming out this year.
04:07We need to do some painting and see if we can open the window
04:11because Tati needs natural light for her flowers.
04:14We've got our first wedding fast approaching in a few days' time.
04:17We really must crack on, get everything done as fast as we can.
04:21Oh, wow, I've forgotten what it was like.
04:26Whilst Tati and Sarah tackle the grime...
04:29Bye-bye, cobwebs.
04:32..George attempts to open up the 200-year-old window.
04:42So far, so good.
04:51Oh.
04:54Oh, I've just broken the glass.
04:58I need a screwdriver.
05:04Oh.
05:06Two panes of glass I've broken.
05:10Well, I think the answer to that is to...
05:15..break the glass.
05:18We'll have to get some new glass.
05:21That was good.
05:24So now...
05:25I don't know, that's been open for a long time.
05:27Right.
05:31Yep.
05:33Let there be light!
05:34Yay!
05:37That should be nice.
05:39Is that good?
05:41Yeah, brilliant.
05:43Oh, it really brightens everything up.
05:45It really changes it.
05:46That's so nice.
05:48This is the best tool you can have when you're owning a chateau.
05:55It's a bog brush and, obviously, we use it absolutely everywhere and it's just perfect.
06:01With the dirt flushed away, George cracks on with the painting, while Sarah and Tati prepare to recreate an aged
06:11effect on the ceiling.
06:13You choose your base colour and then two shades lighter and two shades darker.
06:18And with a brush, we slap those three colours onto the ceiling and then we kind of just very roughly
06:24mix them all together.
06:26And then we tap them out with the woolly, which creates the mottled effect.
06:35Perfect.
06:36Let's move on.
06:37Oui, oui.
06:38Let's do the next block.
06:41It's a great start, but with the first wedding of the season just days away, there is still a huge
06:48amount to do.
06:55300 miles eastward, in the dramatic Auvergne landscape, right in the heart of a small village, is the part 14th
07:05century Chateau d'Azerat.
07:09In addition to the remnants of a collapsed tower, across three floors, there is a stone kitchen, a dining room
07:18with historic wall frescoes, and a great hall, which currently serves as a bedroom.
07:27Far from being put off by its disrepair are Cotswold antique dealers Catherine and Steve, who snapped up the property
07:35in 2022.
07:37There you go.
07:39And split their time between their home and business in the UK with this challenging restoration in France.
07:48It's very, very romantic.
07:51It's ancient.
07:53It's got some amazing features, and it needed saving.
07:56This one was such a mess.
07:58People for six, seven hundred years have been using this space to live in, and for me, it does give
08:06me the chills to think about what's happened here and what's gone on.
08:10I can relate it to history from England, you know, dating back to the Tudors.
08:17It almost doesn't feel real.
08:22Located two and a half hours from Lyon, the last time we saw them, they'd begun the gruelling task of
08:30building a working kitchen in a historic space, starting with a flagstone floor.
08:36It looks really good.
08:39And Catherine has chosen to create an apothecary-style facade for the kitchen cabinets.
08:47I'm really pleased with how this is starting to look, that is for sure.
08:55Today, work is ongoing in the kitchen.
08:59I've been doing some prep work on the apothecary drawers.
09:02I've done my first gold leafing, which is challenging.
09:06There are 40 of them to do.
09:09And it's a labour of love in the extreme.
09:13While Catherine continues with the delicate task ahead,
09:19Steve is channelling his inner medieval builder.
09:25Great for the back.
09:29Just got three or four whole slabs now, and then we're just pieces around the edge of the wall, and
09:36that's the floor down.
09:37And that's some rest for the back.
09:39It's not the world's flat, that's floor, but I don't like anything to be too flat and square,
09:44because there's not much square in the whole building, so it suits the building in the long run.
09:53Ooh!
09:55Oh, no!
09:59I enjoy the process of gold leafing in as much as the result is worth the actual work, but the
10:04work itself, maybe not the most enjoyable.
10:09Right, this is the last bit.
10:11It's going to look amazing.
10:18Right, we're there. We are there. I'm going to say that's good enough for me.
10:23Do you all right, though?
10:25Yeah, absolutely.
10:28Would you like to put your slippers on?
10:30Living my best life.
10:35But with windows missing, and walls to repair, this medieval home is far from a royal retreat.
10:49Coming up, it's one small step for a chatelan, and one giant leap for a tired staircase.
10:57If I've got it right, as soon as I put this on top, they should fit together perfectly.
11:02While George struggles to dig a hole for himself.
11:06This is what happens when you buy tools in a broconge.
11:17In the rolling hills of the Occitanie region in southwest France lies the 19th century Château de Piquon.
11:28With six and a half acres, it boasts 31 rooms, several outbuildings, and a private lake.
11:41Last year, it became home to intellectual property manager Jane.
11:46Hey, good girl.
11:47Her husband Rory, a plumber and actor.
11:50Who's first? Who's first? There you go.
11:52And their menagerie of four-legged friends.
11:56I think the Château, we never get over how beautiful it is.
12:00When I've been out to do the horses, and I'm walking back, I just think, wow, it's amazing.
12:07I've lived in several tiny bedsits in London and Reading, and to go from that, you know,
12:13a cockroach-infested flat in south London, to this, it's a big step up in the world.
12:20You think, I actually live here.
12:24Within two hours of Toulouse, the animal-loving pair bought the property for £470,000
12:35and planned to open a holiday rentals and events business.
12:40Last time we saw them, the Chatelang got the keys to their new dream home.
12:46Ta-da-da!
12:48Where a damaged tree was blocking their perfect view.
12:52Do you know what I can see from here?
12:54What?
12:55All the clearing up I've got to do.
13:00Today, they want to overhaul a suite in the property's two-storey jeet.
13:07The jeet has its own entrance, which is great.
13:10It's the ground floor and the first floor of the East Wing.
13:16Once the jeet's ready, we're hoping to rent it hopefully this year.
13:19So we're sort of on a deadline to get it done in the next three or four months, ideally.
13:25And then, if we're lucky, we'll get some business this year.
13:31Currently used as a dumping site, the jeet's ground floor comprises a dated living area
13:37and an empty shell of a kitchen.
13:40And getting upstairs is a challenge.
13:43So this is the step that I'm hoping to be working on this weekend,
13:46because currently it's quite hard to get up.
13:54Upstairs, they plan to overhaul a tired bedroom,
13:58a disused bathroom and a shabby dressing room.
14:03Getting the jeet finished is absolutely essential.
14:06We promised, as part of our visa application,
14:09that we are going to run a hospitality tourism business.
14:13And to renew our visas, we have to demonstrate that we have basically achieved that.
14:27While Jane gets stuck into cleaning the dressing room floor,
14:33Rory is about to tackle some carpentry.
14:37Well, these two bits of wood that I'm straddling at the minute
14:41are the two halves that are going to make up the bottom section
14:45of the bottom step of the back stairs.
14:49And it's made of a railway sleeper,
14:51and I've cut and shaped it to match the old one that came out
14:54that was completely rotten and eaten through.
14:56And so now I just need to effectively join the two together.
14:59So the old one had a bit of wood like that,
15:04where hole cuts, that was through,
15:06and then a doweling was drilled and put in through to hold them in position.
15:09So that's what I'm going to try and emulate and recreate.
15:12And hopefully, I'll get it right first time.
15:21I'm not a DIY person at all, really.
15:24For Rory, he just goes, OK, I can do that.
15:26I'll find where the screws are, I'll unscrew it,
15:27I'll, you know, put it back together again.
15:29He just, he's not afraid of tasks.
15:38So I can put these two bits in there like that.
15:41And hopefully, if I've got it right,
15:43as soon as I put this on top,
15:44they should fit together perfectly.
15:47So let's give it a whirl.
15:50And then this will be the bottom step.
15:56Like that.
16:03That will do.
16:06With a staircase to fix
16:09and a jeet to totally transform,
16:12this is no weekend DIY job.
16:21Back in Cognac country,
16:23with the woolly paint effect ceiling finished,
16:28George and Tati are off on a scavenger hunt.
16:32This morning, what we're going to do
16:33is get a sink for Tati's floral workshop.
16:37She's got the water already installed,
16:39but we need a sink
16:39so that she can water the flowers,
16:42fill the vases, etc.
16:44George has spotted
16:45an abandoned old butler's sink
16:47in the chateau woods
16:49that he's hoping to upcycle.
16:53Is that what we're getting?
16:54That's what we're getting,
16:55the porcelain sink there.
16:58Don't trip over.
16:59I'll do my best.
17:03Oh, yeah.
17:05Lovely.
17:10Sleuth, you're going through the jungle.
17:17You OK?
17:19Yeah.
17:19You?
17:19Yeah.
17:21Oh, be careful.
17:24Don't break it now, darling.
17:26Come on in.
17:26Let's go.
17:28George's plan
17:29is to mount the sink
17:31onto a vintage table.
17:36But a little modification
17:38is needed first.
17:41That's 14 centimetres.
17:44So the plan with the table
17:45is to cut it down a bit
17:47so that it's not too high
17:49so we can put the sink on it,
17:52drill a hole for the waste,
17:54both of which I've never done before,
17:56so we'll see.
18:02OK, so far,
18:04not too bad.
18:07Whoa.
18:10Next up,
18:11mastering
18:12the circular drill.
18:16Anything happening?
18:21Doesn't seem very good, does it?
18:27Are we doing something wrong?
18:30The blade has detached
18:34from this bit.
18:35This is what happens
18:36when you buy tools
18:38in a brocante.
18:41Well, and also
18:42when you don't know
18:42what you're doing.
18:43So I think it goes like this,
18:45so you have to get the grooves
18:46and then you twist it.
18:48OK.
18:49Let's hope it stays this time.
18:54All right,
18:55do you want to have a go?
18:56Yes.
18:59We're through!
19:01Keep going.
19:02OK, well done.
19:03Woo-hoo!
19:04Look at that.
19:06Yeah, that is
19:07a thick piece of wood.
19:09It's thicker than I thought.
19:10Yeah.
19:12Well done.
19:13Let's hope the hole
19:14is in the right place.
19:17Oh.
19:19Look at that.
19:20Perfect.
19:21OK.
19:22Off.
19:25So that's going...
19:28..here.
19:30Got the sink.
19:31Oh, thank you.
19:34I can do it.
19:35Perfect.
19:37We've tested it with the water,
19:39which is obviously
19:40very, very important.
19:42One more job
19:43ticked off the list.
19:44Plenty more to go, though.
19:47With just days
19:48until the wedding,
19:49this flower room
19:51is going to need
19:52a blooming miracle.
20:00300 miles away
20:01in the Auvergne...
20:03It's just so many stages
20:06to this project.
20:08While Catherine
20:09puts the final touches
20:11to her faux kitchen
20:13drawer fronts.
20:14Right, what have we got here?
20:18Steve is about to give
20:20their medieval chateau
20:21some modern weatherproofing.
20:24One of the first jobs
20:26that we did when we got here
20:27was replace
20:29all the gaping holes
20:31all the way up the tower
20:32with safety glass.
20:34We couldn't do one window
20:36around the other side
20:38of the tower.
20:40This last piece of glass
20:42going in now
20:42will give us
20:43a watertight building,
20:45hopefully.
20:48I don't know if they've
20:49ever had glass in,
20:50but if they have,
20:52certainly not
20:52for the last
20:53couple of hundred years.
20:55Been there since
20:55before Henry VIII
20:57was trying to take
20:58this part of France.
21:01Even my carpentry skills
21:03can cope with
21:04making a wooden box
21:05and fitting a piece
21:06of glass into it.
21:08It's just four lengths
21:09of timber,
21:10a couple of screws,
21:11and it's a very cheap solution.
21:12It's probably
21:14€25 to get
21:16that window in.
21:17So just a question
21:18of getting those
21:19in position.
21:21So basically
21:21we'll be putting
21:22four pieces
21:23around that edge.
21:25So we've got
21:26somewhere to put
21:26the glass up to
21:27and then we've got
21:28four more pieces
21:29to basically
21:30sandwich the glass
21:31in place.
21:39Putting these
21:40last pieces of trim
21:41to hold the glass
21:42into place
21:42and then
21:48it should be ready
21:49to fit into the opening.
21:56€25 done.
22:12And we're in.
22:17This is so weird.
22:19So weird
22:20to see through
22:21that window.
22:23Hurrah!
22:23Another one
22:24off the list.
22:25Yes, indeed.
22:27Next!
22:28LAUGHTER
22:32It's made a big difference
22:33to the building
22:34feeling more finished
22:36which is ridiculous
22:37considering
22:37what a wreck it looks.
22:39but each little step
22:41makes a difference.
22:43Yeah, I think
22:43it's starting to feel
22:44like a home.
22:45I am really chuffed
22:47with that.
22:48It's just,
22:48it's crazy
22:49how much difference
22:50it's made.
22:52Steve's window
22:53has the royal seal
22:54of approval
22:55but he's putting
22:57his historical hat
22:58back on
22:58for his next task.
23:00Lime mortaring
23:01the 14th century
23:03kitchen walls.
23:10still to come.
23:12So if you get
23:12that end
23:13and then I'll
23:14do the heavy lifting
23:15and wiggling.
23:16It's the moment
23:16of truth
23:17for Jane and Rory.
23:18This is where
23:19I step in the cement.
23:21And Steve
23:22takes on
23:23some 14th century
23:25style DIY.
23:26If you try
23:27and get too much
23:28in one layer
23:29you can
23:30pull it away
23:31from the wall.
23:39At Chateau de Brive
23:41just a day away
23:42from the first
23:43wedding of the season
23:44preparations
23:45are in full swing.
23:50Tati's workshop
23:51is now finally finished.
23:53I can't wait
23:53to see her using it
23:54and she's got
23:55masses of things
23:56to produce
23:56for this
23:57fantastic weekend.
23:59With the bride

24:09to forage
24:10for flowers.
24:15As long
24:16as stem
24:17as possible.
24:17Yes.
24:19Well before
24:20Tati showed
24:21an interest
24:21in floristry
24:24every wedding
24:25every wedding
24:25that we got
24:27booked
24:27we had to
24:28find them

24:40took a shine
24:40to it
24:41and loved it
24:41so we took
24:43it further
24:43and said
24:44well why don't

24:45She's so happy
24:47she's really
24:48found something

25:09a week ago
25:10the cellar
25:11room was
25:12a dark
25:12dank
25:13unused
25:14space
25:19now
25:20it has
25:21been
25:21transformed
25:22into a
25:23stunning
25:24floristry
25:24workshop
25:25with a
25:27restored
25:27200 year
25:29old
25:29window
25:31a new
25:32table
25:33mounted
25:33sink
25:34and
25:35vintage
25:36shelving
25:36the
25:38mottled
25:38paint
25:39effect
25:39on the
25:39ceiling
25:40blends
25:41perfectly
25:42with the
25:43aged
25:43walls
25:44it's
25:46such a
25:46lovely
25:46space
25:47we've
25:48managed
25:48to create
25:49this
25:50blank
25:50canvas
25:51and turn
25:51it into
25:52my own
25:53proper space
25:54where I can
25:55truly blossom
25:56and it's
25:56really exciting
25:57to have this
26:02as tatty
26:03begins the
26:04floral
26:05arrangements
26:05the bridal
26:06party arrives
26:08felicity
26:08ollie
26:09along with
26:10dog
26:11albie
26:15it's their
26:16very first
26:17visit to the
26:17chateau
26:18make
26:19make
26:19make yourself
26:19at home
26:20here
26:20and then
26:20dinner
26:21on the
26:21terrace
26:22over there
26:22for later
26:23first impressions
26:24are incredible
26:25absolutely
26:25beautiful
26:27especially
26:27we haven't
26:28been here
26:28before
26:28so we
26:29were holding
26:30our breath
26:31but no
26:31it was even
26:32better than
26:32we could have
26:33imagined
26:36yeah
26:37i'm happy
26:38with that
26:38i really hope
26:39the bride likes
26:40these because
26:40i've got three
26:41more to go
26:42but yeah
26:43that's finished
26:44yay
26:46with more
26:47guests arriving
26:48the pressure
26:49is now on
26:50for sarah
26:51george and
26:51tatty
26:52to give
26:53the bride
26:53and groom
26:54the wedding
26:55of their
26:56dreams
26:56tatty's already
26:57done a lot
26:58of prep
26:58today but
26:58she's got
26:59a lot
26:59to do
27:00tomorrow
27:00and it's
27:01a slightly
27:02earlier ceremony
27:03than we're
27:03normally used
27:04to which
27:04makes it
27:05a little bit
27:06tighter
27:07to get
27:07everything
27:07done in
27:08time
27:08but
27:09i'm sure
27:11with a
27:12with a
27:12big win
27:12we'll be
27:13all right
27:21200 miles
27:23away
27:23in their
27:24chateau
27:24gite
27:27while jane
27:28sands the
27:29dressing room
27:29floor
27:32rory is
27:33preparing to
27:34install his
27:35handmade
27:36replacement
27:36step base
27:39in lieu of
27:41proper
27:41damp
27:42proofing
27:42plastic
27:43i'm using
27:44this fairly
27:45thick
27:45bit of
27:46plastic
27:46that we
27:47have
27:47just as
27:48a damp
27:48proof course
27:49so i don't
27:49want any
27:50moisture
27:50getting into
27:51the wood
27:51that shouldn't
27:51be there
27:52so hopefully
27:53this will
27:53stop anything
27:54getting in
28:05the floor
28:06the floor's not
28:06completely flat
28:07and when i go
28:08over a ridge
28:09it makes
28:09you know
28:10it grinds
28:12it's a bit
28:13scary
28:13but yeah
28:14i just
28:16keep going
28:21i mean
28:21it looks
28:22okay to me
28:22i'll go
28:23with that
28:29ta-da
28:30i think i was
28:30clear
28:31so if you get
28:32that end
28:32and then i'll
28:33do the
28:35heavy lifting
28:36and wiggling
28:37okay
28:42this is where
28:43i step in
28:43the cement
28:46so that's
28:47right so we
28:47get it
28:48nice and
28:48low
28:50i get this
28:50sort of in
28:51the corner
28:52and
28:52and
28:54there
28:54you there
28:55you where
28:56you want
28:56to be
28:56yeah
28:56i think
28:57so
28:59it's tucked
28:59in really
29:00nicely
29:00actually
29:01isn't it
29:01it's perfect
29:02i'm really
29:03happy with
29:03that actually
29:04surprisingly
29:05happy i was
29:05expecting something
29:06to go wrong
29:07that is amazing
29:09i am so proud
29:11of you for
29:12doing that
29:14with the base
29:15of the step
29:16finished
29:16and the dressing
29:18room floor
29:18looking much
29:19better
29:22jane's eager
29:22to start
29:23work
29:24on the
29:24bathroom
29:25we call
29:25it the
29:26secret
29:27bathroom
29:27because
29:28the entrance
29:29to it
29:29is within
29:30a mass
29:31of wardrobes
29:32so you
29:32walk into
29:32the dressing
29:33room
29:33and you
29:33have no
29:34idea
29:34that there's
29:34a bathroom
29:35there
29:37it's the
29:38main bathroom
29:39for the
29:39jeep project
29:40so yeah
29:40we've got
29:41to nail
29:41this
29:41and we've
29:42got to
29:42get it
29:42done
29:44there's
29:44so much
29:45work
29:45gone into
29:47this
29:47sink
29:48unit
29:48but
29:49it's
29:50dark
29:50and it
29:51looks a
29:51bit
29:51dated
29:52so i'm
29:53hoping
29:53that
29:54with
29:54some
29:54bright
29:55colours
29:55it's
29:56going
29:56to
29:56look a lot
29:57prettier
30:00i have done
30:01painting before
30:02and rory finds it
30:03very very boring
30:04and it makes him
30:04cross
30:05whereas i find it
30:06quite relaxing
30:06so it's good
30:07that i can do
30:08something helpful
30:13this is a darker
30:14base
30:15so it's going to
30:17take more
30:18painting to
30:19do anything
30:20but i don't
30:20mind having it
30:21still showing all
30:22the grain through
30:22and stuff
30:23so i'm
30:24reserving
30:25judgment
30:26with the bathroom
30:28barely painted
30:29and the staircase
30:30still unfinished
30:31jane and rory
30:33are a long way
30:34off building
30:35their dream
30:36jeet
30:43in central france
30:45at their medieval
30:46chateau
30:47catherine and steve
30:49are gearing up
30:50for more
30:51grafting in the
30:52kitchen
30:53what's your plan
30:54today
30:54start mixing
30:55some lime
30:56mortar up
30:57so that we can
30:58start dealing
30:59with some of
30:59the walls
31:00because the dust
31:01just drops
31:02out of them
31:03the way they are
31:04at the moment
31:04you've got
31:05700 years
31:06of history
31:07there
31:07and it'd be
31:08a shame
31:08to spoil it
31:09but obviously
31:10we don't want
31:11it to be
31:11in a time
31:11war
31:12we are
31:13we're not
31:13going to be
31:13spit roasting
31:14an ox
31:16in the fire
31:17I don't know
31:17maybe one day
31:18maybe one day
31:19the fireplace
31:21is big enough
31:25while catherine
31:27cracks on
31:27with her
31:28faux
31:28cabinet
31:29drawers
31:31steve
31:32prepares
31:33for the
31:33dirty
31:34task
31:34ahead
31:37all the
31:38walls
31:38here
31:39are
31:39line
31:39mortared
31:39right the
31:40way back
31:40to the
31:4114th century
31:41and although
31:43it's not used
31:44in much
31:44modern
31:44construction
31:45it's recommended
31:46for old
31:47buildings
31:47because it
31:48enables
31:49the building
31:50to breathe
31:51now this
31:52section here
31:53is from
31:54part of the
31:55original
31:55which is in
31:56good enough
31:56condition
31:57we're going
31:57to try
31:57and leave
31:58it
32:04one of the
32:04tricks seems
32:05to be
32:07learning when
32:08to not
32:08try and go
32:09too far
32:10with it
32:11if you try
32:12and get too
32:12much
32:13in one
32:14layer
32:15you can
32:16pull it
32:17away from
32:17the wall
32:21with enough
32:23drawer fronts
32:23completed
32:24for one
32:25whole panel
32:26Catherine is
32:27heading to
32:27the kitchen
32:28to see
32:29how they
32:29look
32:33I love
32:34the one
32:34that says
32:35rosemary
32:41this is
32:41going to
32:42stand too
32:42proud
32:43but
32:45I just
32:46want to
32:46see
32:46that's a
32:47relief
32:48after all
32:49that work
32:49I'm really
32:51really chuffed
32:51with the way
32:52this is looking
32:56with the panel
32:58put together
32:58it's time
33:00for Catherine
33:00and Steve
33:01to try it
33:02out
33:03wow
33:03looking
33:04great
33:05and all
33:06the dust
33:06that's
33:07falling on
33:07it
33:07is
33:08actually
33:08helping
33:08I'm liking
33:09the dust
33:09yeah
33:10gosh it's
33:11heavy
33:12what sort
33:13of hinges
33:14are you
33:14going to
33:15use
33:15wow
33:17moment of
33:17truth
33:21I really
33:23love it
33:23it looks
33:24so good
33:26their modern
33:27dishwasher
33:28and fridge
33:29fronts
33:29are no
33:30longer
33:30visible
33:34now
33:34they have
33:35they have a
33:35spectacular
33:36handmade
33:37creation
33:38that makes
33:39a fitting
33:39finish to
33:40match the
33:41ancient
33:41surroundings
33:42of their
33:43kitchen
33:44it does
33:45look like
33:45you just
33:46want to
33:46open a
33:46drawer
33:47I'll
33:47enjoy people
33:48that have never
33:49been before
33:49coming in
33:50trying to find
33:50the fridge
33:51I'm just
33:51smiling
33:52that's it
33:53thank goodness
33:54for that
33:55really
33:56it's spurring me
33:57on to
33:58do some
33:59more of it
34:02with more
34:04panels to
34:04put up
34:05curtains to
34:06hang
34:07and an
34:08island to
34:08install
34:09Catherine and
34:10Steve's
34:11kitchen
34:11won't be
34:13finished
34:13anytime soon
34:20coming up
34:22Rory takes
34:23a huge
34:24gamble
34:24that could
34:25make or
34:26break the
34:26entire
34:27staircase
34:27I'm going
34:29to mix
34:29some resin
34:29and pour
34:30it in
34:30what could
34:31possibly go
34:32wrong
34:32and the
34:33clock is
34:34ticking for
34:35Tati's first
34:36floral wedding
34:37the ceremony
34:38is looming
34:39so getting
34:40a bit nervous
34:48in the
34:49Occitanie
34:50region
34:52Rory's
34:53been working
34:54hard to
34:55build the
34:55base for
34:56the jeep
34:56stairs
34:57something like
34:58that I
34:59think
35:02that looks
35:03pretty good
35:04next he
35:06hopes to
35:06restore the
35:07damaged
35:07second step
35:08with some
35:09resin
35:10I will be
35:11using
35:13this
35:13sort of
35:16plexiglass
35:16plastic
35:17fake glass
35:18and I'm
35:19going to be
35:19using a
35:20hot glue gun
35:20to glue it
35:21all in
35:22position
35:23putting these
35:24on like
35:24that
35:25and
35:26over the
35:27top to
35:27create a
35:28mould
35:29mix some
35:29resin and
35:30pour it
35:30in
35:31what could
35:32possibly
35:32go wrong
35:38that one's
35:39on like
35:39that
35:45now I'll
35:46mix up
35:46some
35:46resin
35:50Rory is
35:50combining
35:51the resin
35:52with a
35:52hardening
35:53agent
35:55I sadly
35:56missed my
35:57opportunity
35:57to go to
35:58wizarding
35:58school
35:58so I'd
36:00like to
36:00mix potions
36:01up in
36:01my spare
36:01time
36:04I saved
36:05all of the
36:06dust and
36:06powder that
36:07came out
36:07of the
36:08old step
36:08so now I'm
36:09going to put
36:09some of the
36:10dust in here
36:10to change the
36:11colour of it
36:11to act like a
36:12pigment
36:15and also to
36:16bulk it up a bit
36:18let's try and
36:19mix
36:19that in
36:21I know you
36:22can get
36:22powder filler
36:24for epoxy
36:25resin
36:25and so
36:26I just
36:28thought
36:29wood is a
36:30powder
36:30and surely it
36:32works as a
36:32filler
36:36I reckon
36:37that's probably
36:37good to go
36:46we've got
36:47as much
36:48resin as I
36:48can put in
36:49now we
36:50just leave
36:51it for
36:5224 hours
36:53or something
36:54like that
36:54until it's
36:54gone hard
36:55then I can
36:55peel off
36:56all the
36:56plastic
36:57and see
36:57how it
36:58looks
37:02elsewhere
37:03Jane's
37:03busy with
37:04a new
37:04chandelier
37:06which she
37:06plans to
37:07put up
37:07in the
37:08dressing room
37:09I wonder
37:10if they
37:10should have
37:10gone on
37:11first
37:11they probably
37:12should have
37:15oh hello
37:17perfect timing
37:20so we've
37:21got a wire
37:21we've got
37:22the main
37:23cable through
37:24and we've
37:24got to wire
37:25the arms
37:26to the main
37:27cable
37:29they're going
37:30to take up
37:30one each
37:31of these
37:33one of each
37:34is going to
37:34have to go
37:35in there
37:35one of each
37:36is going to
37:36have to
37:36go in there
37:36you can't
37:37put two
37:37in one
37:39so they
37:39should just
37:40bind together
37:40nicely
37:43Rory and I
37:43met online
37:44and I think
37:47Jane made
37:48the first move
37:48oh yes
37:49yeah that's
37:49true
37:50I was very
37:50proactive
37:51I was intrigued
37:52by his profile
37:53there was a
37:54picture of Rory
37:55he looked a bit
37:55like Lawrence
37:56of Arabia
37:58I was technically
38:00living in a tent
38:00at the time
38:03I was
38:04I was
38:04relatively
38:05homeless
38:08and it was
38:09March
38:11I mean I was
38:12quite the catch
38:12at the time
38:17are you done
38:18I think so
38:19they're protected
38:20aren't they
38:21so within the
38:21touch they're
38:22fine
38:22because it's
38:23all gone in
38:24okay
38:36the next day
38:37it's the moment
38:39of truth
38:39for Rory's
38:40resin experiment
38:43well it's dried
38:44as good as dried
38:45I mean
38:45the internal
38:47parts of it
38:47might need
38:48a little bit
38:48more time
38:49before it's
38:49completely
38:50solidified
38:51but it's
38:51hard enough
38:52that I can
38:52take my
38:53mould off
38:54yeah that's
38:55a bit better
38:57yes this is
38:58beautiful
38:58pretend wood
39:09I think that
39:10the resin
39:11isn't fully
39:11dry so when
39:12I'm sanding
39:12it down
39:13I can see
39:13it's sort of
39:14gumming up
39:14a bit
39:15but I'm
39:15really pleased
39:16with the
39:16results this
39:17far
39:17and I
39:17should still
39:18be able
39:18to just
39:19offer it
39:19up into
39:20the staircase
39:21to make
39:21sure that
39:21it still
39:22fits
39:30so that
39:31has got
39:32to be
39:32this way
39:33a bit
39:33I think
39:35but this
39:36is effectively
39:37the bottom
39:37step
39:39wonderful
39:40I'm quite
39:41pleased with
39:41how that
39:42looks
39:46what do you
39:46think
39:46that bottom
39:48step
39:48is magnificent
39:50I think the
39:51time that
39:52you've taken
39:52doing all
39:53of it
39:53is amazing
39:54you can see
39:56it the finishing
39:56line is visible
39:57just about in the
39:59distance
39:59yeah
39:59yeah definitely
40:01the stairs
40:02the stairs have been
40:03a labour of love
40:04but with so much
40:06still to do
40:07each day the
40:08gite remains
40:09unfinished
40:09is a day lost
40:11to potential
40:12paying guests
40:19back in western
40:21france
40:22at sarah and
40:23george's
40:24chateau
40:26tatty has just
40:27over three
40:28hours to go
40:29it's wedding day

40:31very very busy
40:32still got lots

40:34got to build
40:35the arch
40:35and I'm not
40:37too sure
40:37about the
40:38timings yet
40:38so just
40:39got to get
40:39on
40:41the ceremony
40:42is taking
40:42place
40:43under a wooden
40:44pergola
40:44on the lawn
40:45this is the
40:46working walk
40:47you march
40:48everywhere
40:48where tatty
40:49quickly needs
40:50to weave
40:51some floral
40:52magic
40:53I'm going to
40:53start filling
40:54with foliage
40:55and then
40:56slowly build
40:57up with the
40:57flowers afterwards
40:58to create
40:58a lovely
40:59flurry
41:00wild
41:00effect
41:07she has
41:08enlisted
41:09help from

41:12looking nice
41:12tatty
41:13thank you

41:19bit more to
41:19do
41:20the ceremony
41:21is looming
41:21so getting
41:23a bit nervous
41:25whilst
41:25preparations
41:26continue
41:27down in the
41:29cellar tasting
41:30rooms
41:30George is
41:33making a
41:33pre-ceremony
41:34tipple
41:35for the
41:35groomsman
41:36what I'm
41:38making now
41:39is a
41:40light
41:41cognac
41:43cocktail
41:44so it's
41:44basically
41:45a ten year
41:46old cognac
41:47with lime
41:49mint
41:49and then
41:51topped up
41:52with ginger

41:56the arch
41:57has been
41:57done
41:57as we
41:58speak

41:59tight for
