Chateau DIY - Season 11 - Episode 02
Transcript
00:00Across France, there are thousands of spectacular chateaux,
00:06often neglected and run down.
00:09Oh, my goodness.
00:10I want the state of it.
00:12In desperate need of loving restoration.
00:15He's in his element down there doing this.
00:18Now being brought back to life by brave new owners.
00:22Fingers crossed that it's actually going to work when it's finished.
00:25Yeah.
00:26Who are turning them into extraordinary homes.
00:29I feel quite emotional about it.
00:31I love it.
00:32And exciting businesses.
00:35The day has gone swimmingly well.
00:38Taking on monumental challenges.
00:42Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:43With highs.
00:45I just think it's got elegance and I love that.
00:48As well as lows.
00:49Terry, where's the water in here?
00:51But with ambitious ideas.
00:54Terrace here, kitchen there, right next to the river, hook out a trout.
00:58And hard work comes great joy.
01:02It's absolutely fantastic.
01:05As they fulfill their dream.
01:07Cheers.
01:08Cheers, honey.
01:09To be custodians of their very own castle.
01:15Today.
01:17They're trusting me to clean crystals.
01:19One family take on an extravagant new challenge.
01:24This is going to take a long time.
01:27This pair face a risky renovation job.
01:31I don't do heights at all.
01:33Terrifying.
01:34Absolutely terrifying.
01:36Oh.
01:38And one couple clash over their latest restoration project.
01:43Are you sure it goes?
01:44Because there's a lot of colour.
01:46I think it's stunning.
01:47If it was me, this would be painted magnolia.
01:58In the picturesque region of Normandy in northern France
02:02is the delightful 18th century Chateau de la Lasselle.
02:09It comprises 25 rooms and 21 acres and it stood abandoned for four decades
02:21until it won over the hearts of former pet shop owner Terry.
02:25It did.
02:26And fiancé Ashley from Middlesbrough.
02:29When we bought La Lasselle, I think the one thing that we loved was the originality of it.
02:34How much of the original features were still here and that's always been kind of our mantra.
02:39It's a restoration rather than a renovation.
02:41A renovation would have been done two years ago.
02:43Yeah, definitely.
02:44And obviously when people visit, we want it to be an experience for them
02:47so they're not coming just to stay in a room that they could stop anywhere.
02:51This is going to be a memorable experience for them.
02:54Hopefully.
02:55It will.
03:01Located an hour's drive from Le Mans,
03:05Terry and Ashley bought the Chateau for £250,000 in 2021
03:15and set about building a high-end Holiday Let's business.
03:20Keeping them company here are Terry's mum, Tracy,
03:2511-year-old nephew, Jonathan,
03:28and das Hund, Patrick.
03:33They've already worked wonders creating their first opulent guest suite,
03:40which includes a magnificent Edwardian-style salon,
03:47a majestic bedroom,
03:52and a stylish en suite.
03:58Wow.
03:59I was just at Versailles and I think they've outdone Versailles.
04:06When we saw them last summer,
04:08they started to create an even grander two-bedroom suite,
04:12which they're eager to make the showpiece of the Chateau.
04:17But already, they've decided to adapt their grand plan for the master bedroom walls.
04:25The idea was to paint it red to give us that nice, deep, rich colour.
04:29But it didn't feel elegant enough.
04:31So we decided to create a, like, fake wood effect.
04:36So, Trompe-Loi, here in France it's called.
04:39And it's just creating a whole wood grain effect for the entire room.
04:44Obviously, it's been a tall order.
04:46It took us about four weeks to do.
04:48An easy job, then?
04:49Yeah.
04:50It looks absolutely fantastic.
04:51So pleased with it.
04:52In this world, yeah.
04:53It really is.
04:54Yeah.
04:57Today, whilst Ashley heads to the suite salon to add another coat of paint,
05:03Terry is eager to finish off the ornate mouldings for the bedroom walls.
05:08What I need to do is mark out where each of these corner pieces are going.
05:13I've created a template,
05:15so I'm getting the exact same point,
05:18and then that gives me two points just to work where the mouldings are going.
05:22So I'll get some contact adhesive on the back of these,
05:25stick these on,
05:26and then I can start adding the trimming.
05:32Aiming for classic French elegance,
05:35Terry has created the centre panel mouldings himself.
05:39So we've cast it out of resin,
05:42and then we give it a paint in gold.
05:44We put some wax on,
05:45just give it a bit of age,
05:46and then once it's on the wall,
05:48we go over and highlight the gold a bit more prominent.
05:50We need to make it look 200 years old, really.
05:58Doing jobs like this,
05:59it's fantastic because it's going to be unique to us.
06:02I think I've always been, like, quite creative and stuff.
06:05As a kid, I always had stuff like Lego and Meccano.
06:11Terry's eye for detail has certainly not been lost on Ashley.
06:15He has some unbelievable skills in terms of being able to see something,
06:20have a vision,
06:20and then be able to create it as well.
06:23We've done all sorts together.
06:25We've built cars.
06:26We've renovated our house in the UK as well,
06:28but nothing on a chateau scale.
06:32With the bespoke mouldings painted,
06:36Terry just needs to attach them to the wall.
06:40All we're doing is just putting a contact adhesive on,
06:45and then we're popping a little screw in just to hold it in place,
06:49just so it doesn't slide down the wall.
06:56Last one.
07:00With the job complete,
07:02the walls have an extra touch of charm and character.
07:07But with a salon to get up to scratch
07:09and a second bedroom to bring back to life,
07:13Terry and Ashley's extravagant vision
07:16is only just getting started.
07:26Further west in the stunning region of Brittany
07:29lies the dilapidated Moulin du Quenon.
07:34This crumbling flour mill dates back to the 13th century
07:39and had been left abandoned for over 40 years.
07:44Inside, it was a total mess
07:47and had been ransacked by trespassers.
07:50The huge property is spread over five floors,
07:55has a giant concrete silo for storing grain,
07:58and comes with its own jeet.
08:04This colossal restoration project
08:06is just the latest for experienced chateau renovators Donna and Paul.
08:13Our plan was to take it easy, but on a weak moment I was surfing the net
08:18and I managed to find this particular property.
08:20When I got the first view of the mill,
08:23I mean, it's pretty breathtaking.
08:26Then I walked in the front door.
08:28Yeah.
08:30And saw floor after floor of mill equipment,
08:35bordered up windows.
08:36Also holes in the roof.
08:38There's something about the place that kind of just captured us both, didn't it?
08:43The insanity of it for us.
08:44Yes.
08:45Yeah.
08:48Located 30 miles southeast of St. Malo,
08:53Donna and Paul bought the property for under £100,000 in 2024
08:59and planned to transform it into their new family home.
09:05When we saw them last year,
09:07they replaced the mill roof
09:09and completely removed another over the giant silo
09:16before clearing out the space inside,
09:19ready for the next stage of their project.
09:26So we're in the Sousal,
09:28the lower ground floor of the silos.
09:32We're actually in the swimming pool at present.
09:34We are, yeah.
09:35I mean, it's only this height, so we're OK.
09:37The plan for here is that we are going to create,
09:40in the future, a swimming pool.
09:42And then through the back is going to be a gym area
09:45because it has some of the best views.
09:47So we thought that might actually motivate us to go into the gym.
09:51Go and do a bit of exercise.
09:55They also have grand plans for the floor above,
09:59which has since been emptied.
10:02We've done a lot of work here.
10:04It was full of equipment before.
10:06So we're going to have a kitchen over here.
10:08Kitchen that.
10:08And a utility in the far room.
10:10Yeah, in the back of the house.
10:11Here is going to be the main staircase.
10:14And then behind me is going to be the living room.
10:17And then to the rear here, we have the silos.
10:21Paul has ripped out all the concrete grain tanks
10:24to open up even more room for their dream living space.
10:28This is a dining area.
10:30Yes.
10:31This is the sunroom.
10:32Sunroom.
10:34So this is going to be a bar area.
10:35And then these three bays are going to be general entertainment.
10:39I think once we start cutting out the windows,
10:42it's just going to transform us, isn't it?
10:45But it's the top of the huge silo that has seen the most radical change.
10:52This is our beautiful new terrace.
10:54Yeah.
10:56Freshly created over the top of four silos.
10:59Look at those views.
11:00I mean, fantastic views all the way around, haven't we?
11:03So it's going to be a great, great space.
11:07The couple are gradually making progress.
11:11But there is one small corner, at least, that is finished.
11:18As they've transformed the derelict jeet
11:21into a habitable place to live complete
11:24with lounge, fitted kitchen and bedroom.
11:31It's certainly black and white between how it used to look, isn't it?
11:35A lot of work in here, but I think it's turned out great.
11:38Donna and Paul are off to a good start.
11:42But with a giant historic building to make into their permanent home,
11:47they have years of hard work ahead.
11:55Coming up, tensions rise for this chateau pair.
11:59It's going to stay where it is.
12:01You don't think it'd look better on a magnolia wall, do you?
12:02No.
12:03And Donna and Paul start to feel the strain.
12:07And, uh, what?
12:09Are you pulling?
12:10Yes!
12:18In the stunning region of Limousin, in central France,
12:23is the fairy tale Chateau de la Grière.
12:28This 19th-century castle comprises 12 elegant bedrooms,
12:35two grands salons,
12:38and comes with over 10 acres.
12:41Nice and slowly.
12:43The proud owners are Oxfordshire couples Sharon and Tim,
12:48who have been renovating it ever since they moved here in 2022.
12:54I would say the journey has been fairly Herculean.
12:58Um, it's been emotional, it's been exhausting,
13:01it's been exhilarating,
13:02and for me, I've learnt skills that I didn't think I ever had.
13:05We never know what we're going to come across.
13:07There's still areas that we haven't seen, but it's part of it.
13:10It's a privilege to be able to spend some time in a chateau.
13:14Not everyone gets to do it, so we're very lucky.
13:22Located just half an hour's drive from Limoges,
13:26Sharon and Tim bought the chateau for £500,000.
13:31OK.
13:32Right.
13:33Ready to go.
13:34And when we last saw them,
13:36they began decorating their new tower suite,
13:39which is set to become their first space for paying guests.
13:45So at the moment, all you can see is this,
13:47some might say, ghastly wallpaper,
13:49but I'm hoping it will work.
13:53Today, with the bedroom walls in full bloom
13:57and the tower bathroom sparkling too,
14:01Sharon's plan is starting to come to life.
14:05We need to get this completed in the next couple of days.
14:09I've got friends come in, so I want them to see it.
14:12So we have an awful lot to do.
14:15Ready?
14:18Good.
14:18First, budding interior designer Sharon
14:21wants to fill the room with lots of antiques
14:24that came with the chateau.
14:27I really like this furniture.
14:30It's got a nice, classy look to it.
14:33Even though the wallpaper's a little modern,
14:36I'm hoping that the wallpaper will be secondary to what you see.
14:41That's the idea.
14:43She's also found an old tapestry to help blend things together.
14:48Are you sure it goes, because there's a lot of colour?
14:52I think it's stunning.
14:54I really like it.
14:56I think it's really dramatic, and I absolutely love it.
14:59So it's going to stay where it is.
15:02You don't think it would look better on a magnolia wall, do you?
15:04OK.
15:06No, I don't think it would.
15:07This has allowed my inner colourist to come out, this house.
15:12If it was me, this would be painted magnolia.
15:18With Sharon standing firm...
15:21On your shoulder, arm round it.
15:24..she's also planning to add a century-old rug
15:27that she hopes will complement the bold walls too.
15:32OK.
15:33Which way round should we do it?
15:35So put it somewhere here.
15:39OK.
15:43It's nice.
15:47Good condition, actually.
15:49Just trying to work out whether it works.
15:51Does it work?
15:53We have some green that's in there,
15:56and that okra peachy tone.
16:02OK.
16:02In for a penny, in for a pound.
16:04Having proved a winner,
16:06Sharon's ideas are in full flow.
16:10But with the rest of the room still to furnish,
16:14all she can hope is that it comes up smelling of roses.
16:25In Brittany, in northern France,
16:28Donna and Paul are starting stage two
16:31of their giant restoration project.
16:36We're now at the point where the demolition's finished.
16:40The vision is starting to appear, isn't it?
16:45Today, they're planning on creating a floor for the master bedroom,
16:50which they're building inside the old silo.
16:53Halfway up, what would have been containers filled with tonnes of grain.
17:01It's an epic job.
17:03So, to help, they've roped in builder mate Mick.
17:08And both are having to balance on scaffolding boards
17:12six metres high.
17:16Yeah, I'm quite happy him, Tanga,
17:18working away on that.
17:19I don't do heights at all.
17:22Terrifying.
17:23Absolutely terrifying.
17:25It's a dicey task,
17:27as first,
17:29they need to install fixtures
17:30to the walls
17:31to ensure they can take the weight
17:34of the hefty steel joists.
17:37We just need to mark the holes
17:38for the bolts,
17:39and then we'll get them drilled.
17:42We'll fill these holes full of resin,
17:44and then we'll put the bolts in.
17:46While Mick's left to do the final preparations...
17:52Just a bit of light DIY.
17:55Paul starts wheeling in
17:56the first of the heavy beams.
17:59At over 100 kilos in weight,
18:02it's definitely a two-person job.
18:07Ready?
18:08Yep.
18:08And do it.
18:09Pull it.
18:12Are you pulling?
18:13Yes.
18:14Go.
18:21Go.
18:28Having navigated a safe passage
18:30and with the property
18:32having trapped doors
18:33on every floor,
18:35it's made the job simpler.
18:38That was easier
18:39than carrying it up the stairs.
18:41We just need to get in there now.
18:43I'll just hold the beam
18:44and just push that in.
18:46Give it a go.
18:52How far have we got?
18:54Seven inch.
18:55Right, two.
18:56Ready?
18:57Yeah.
18:59Right, I can go.
19:05Right, I'm on here.
19:13Yay!
19:14That's it in.
19:16Let's see if it's strong enough now.
19:21Yeah, I think pretty confident
19:22that that's solid.
19:23You know,
19:24it's only me and Donna
19:24and a bed
19:25and some soft furnishings
19:26on this floor,
19:27so I think that's great.
19:32So does this mean
19:33I can start kind of voicing
19:34my colour scheme?
19:36Well, I'm sure you've thought
19:37about them already,
19:37but as usual,
19:38you've not shared them with me,
19:39so...
19:41The first of the beans for their new floor
19:44may be in place,
19:46but with so much to do,
19:48Donna's dream bedroom
19:50will have to be put on hold
19:52for a good while yet.
20:01in Normandy,
20:02in Normandy,
20:03at Chateau de la Lasselle,
20:07Terry has begun
20:08to refurbish
20:09the antique chairs
20:10he hopes will add
20:12extra elegance
20:13to their new
20:14grand suite.
20:16We're just going to go
20:18over the horse here
20:19with some calico first.
20:26So the last chairs
20:27that we've done,
20:27they were nice,
20:29they were the 15
20:30little armchairs,
20:31that was obviously
20:32a start for it all,
20:33but with the suite,
20:35we're wanting it
20:35to be a lot more
20:36sort of extravagant.
20:40And to get something
20:41like this,
20:42I've seen exactly
20:42the same salon set
20:44for sale
20:45that's been re-upholstered
20:46and it was in excess
20:47of 3,000 euro
20:49and we got this set
20:50for 80 euro,
20:51so that's why
20:53we have to put
20:53all this effort
20:54into it.
20:57Meanwhile,
20:58Tracey and Ashley
20:59have been challenged
21:00with polishing up
21:01a dusty old chandelier
21:04earmarked
21:04for the master bedroom.
21:06They're trusting me
21:07to clean crystals.
21:09I don't normally
21:10get to play
21:11with the fancy stuff,
21:12so this is a new one
21:13for me.
21:17Mankey these!
21:20I'd say you're
21:21probably going
21:21five to six hundred
21:23crystals on this
21:25chandelier.
21:27It's very fiddly.
21:29I don't want to
21:30be too rough with them.
21:33This is going to
21:34take a long time.
21:38Ashley is hoping
21:40some water and vinegar
21:41will sparkle the crystals
21:43into life.
21:47That's one that
21:48I've had in there
21:49and that's one
21:50that hasn't been in there.
21:51You can see the difference
21:52in the two.
21:53You can actually see
21:54through these ones.
21:55These ones actually
21:55look opaque.
22:00So they need to do more.
22:01Yeah.
22:03Every single one?
22:05Yes, every single one.
22:07They've had about
22:07a hundred years
22:08of muck on them.
22:12Terry, however,
22:13is having no such problems.
22:16We've got all
22:16of the old straps here.
22:17What I'm going to
22:18look at putting
22:19some new ones on
22:20just to help strengthen it.
22:22Better than,
22:22obviously,
22:23getting it in the room
22:23so I can sit on it
22:24and then falls through it.
22:25So I've had to make
22:27my own little stretcher.
22:28So I've just used
22:29a piece of wood
22:30with some nails in.
22:32So nails go through
22:35and then put it
22:36on the side
22:38and you can see,
22:39obviously,
22:39that's just creating
22:40the tension for us.
22:41And then get
22:42our staple gun.
22:46We can just
22:47staple it in
22:48and that'll be sorted.
22:59That's all the chair done.
23:01It's looking fantastic.
23:02You can see,
23:03the next thing is
23:03just to get
23:04all of the fabric on.
23:05Please let me
23:06get another one together.
23:08Terry's graceful touches
23:09are moving
23:11in the right direction.
23:12But with 600 crystals
23:15to clean...
23:16We just need
23:16a little bit more
23:17of a polish.
23:18And, yeah,
23:19they'll be fine.
23:20Their new grand suite
23:21might take a long time
23:23to shine.
23:29Still to come.
23:31It's a recipe
23:32for disaster
23:33for these chatelands.
23:35Oh, grandma's
23:35not going to be happy.
23:37Think you'll need
23:37to start again.
23:38And the problems
23:39start to mount
23:40for Sharon.
23:41I'm not sure
23:42how easy this is
23:43going to be to sell it.
23:44Oh, my God.
23:46Are you kidding me?
23:54In the Limousin region
23:57of central France
23:58at Chateau de la Grieire...
24:00Can you do your side?
24:02Sharon and Tim
24:04are continuing
24:05to enhance
24:06their new tower suite.
24:08Floating headboards.
24:09Nice.
24:10And with their friends
24:11arriving later today,
24:13Sharon's eager
24:14to ensure everything
24:15is picture-perfect.
24:19I've got two options
24:20for the curtains.
24:22One with some pink
24:23and red in
24:24and one that's got
24:25gold in.
24:26But now I've got
24:27gold over there.
24:29I'm thinking gold
24:30here.
24:31So I'm just going to
24:32put both of them up,
24:33make a decision.
24:36I'm going to try
24:37the red one
24:38first.
24:44The red curtains
24:45pick out the red
24:46in the carpet.
24:47Let's just see.
24:54Probably above
24:55my pay grade
24:56to make a decision
24:57on these,
24:57but
24:59I'm with the gold.
25:00Yeah,
25:01I think
25:03this
25:05brings out
25:06this.
25:07Yeah?
25:08Yeah.
25:09Shall we get
25:09the sofa in?
25:10I think it's
25:11a good idea.
25:12As Sharon
25:13is a stickler
25:14for detail,
25:16she is leaving
25:17nothing to chance.
25:19I thought
25:20this would
25:20bring it
25:23all together.
25:25You know
25:26what's throwing it,
25:27don't you?
25:27What?
25:28The carpet.
25:30We haven't
25:31got a gold
25:32carpet.
25:32Have we got
25:32a goldy colour?
25:34No.
25:35One minute
25:35the room works
25:36and then the
25:37next minute
25:38I put something
25:39in that I think
25:39might work
25:40and it just
25:41goes off kilter
25:41slightly.
25:42So I'm hoping
25:43when I get
25:44everything in
25:46it will be
25:46cohesive.
25:48Otherwise
25:49it would be
25:49a hot mess.
25:51I think
25:51standing back
25:51here the sofa
25:52looks better
25:53with the gold.
25:54Having reached
25:55a verdict
25:56and with
25:57time in
25:57short supply,
25:59Tim decides
26:00to finish
26:01off his
26:01odd jobs
26:02in the
26:02ensuite.
26:03We need
26:04to silicone
26:04behind the
26:05back of
26:05the bath
26:06here.
26:11Always the
26:12most difficult
26:12bit is behind
26:13the back
26:13of the
26:13taps.
26:15While
26:15Sharon adds
26:16more glamour
26:17to her
26:18lavish bed
26:19crown.
26:19I'm not
26:20sure how
26:20easy this
26:21is going
26:21to be
26:21to sew
26:22it,
26:22you know.
26:23Up here.
26:29Oh my
26:30God.
26:31Are you
26:31kidding me?
26:32People will
26:33be arriving
26:33soon.
26:35With
26:36their friends
26:36due in a
26:37couple of
26:37hours,
26:38there is
26:39no time
26:39to be
26:40hanging
26:40around.
26:50Taking
26:51on the
26:51restoration
26:52of any
26:52size of
26:53French
26:53Chateau
26:54is not
26:55for the
26:55faint-hearted.
26:59And while
27:00it often
27:00means long
27:01days working,
27:06it's also
27:07a chance
27:08to embrace
27:09the
27:09lifestyle,
27:11especially
27:11when it
27:12comes to
27:13French food.
27:14Mmm.
27:15Just yummy.
27:16This is
27:16homegrown.
27:17It's
27:17delicious.
27:18And
27:19Nitherloire
27:20Valley in
27:21Western
27:21France.
27:22At the
27:22delightful
27:23Chateau de
27:24Borneau,
27:25Erin and
27:26her French
27:26husband,
27:27JB,
27:28want to
27:29indulge in
27:30a national
27:31favorite.
27:33Today we're
27:34going to
27:34make a
27:34tarte
27:35tatin,
27:36a recipe
27:37for my
27:38grandma.
27:39When it
27:39comes to
27:39tartata,
27:40I'm in
27:41charge.
27:41As the
27:42genuine
27:42burgundy
27:43man,
27:43I say,
27:44off you
27:45go,
27:45you can
27:45do
27:45dessert
27:46today.
27:47They
27:48begin by
27:49peeling and
27:49halving the
27:50fruit.
27:51My family
27:52has been
27:53growing apples
27:53for a huge
27:55generation now
27:56in Burgundy,
27:56and it's a good
27:57memory of it.
27:58So, for tea,
28:00coming back from
28:00school,
28:01always tartata.
28:02Oh, lovely.
28:04After cutting
28:05the apples,
28:06JB starts
28:07on the
28:08sugar caramel.
28:10Grandma used
28:11to make it
28:11like super
28:12quickly,
28:13made it look
28:14super easy.
28:15So, when I
28:16make it
28:16caramel, I
28:17wouldn't melt
28:17the sugar first?
28:18So, your
28:19grandma would
28:19have done
28:19the sugar first?
28:20would have
28:20done that.
28:21So, maybe
28:21that is the
28:22key to why
28:23the flavor is
28:23so good?
28:24Yeah.
28:26But after
28:26adding the
28:27butter,
28:30things don't
28:31go according
28:31to plan.
28:32It's
28:33sticking
28:33I put
28:33too much
28:34butter in
28:35one go.
28:36Ah!
28:37This is
28:38not working.
28:40Well,
28:40grandma's
28:41not going
28:41to be
28:41happy.
28:42Don't you
28:43think that's
28:43rescuable?
28:44I think
28:44you'll
28:44need to
28:45start again.
28:46Grandma
28:46would not
28:46be proud.
28:49This
28:49time,
28:50Erin
28:50takes over
28:51the reins.
28:53I can't
28:54believe the
28:54British have
28:55taken over
28:55the French
28:56classics now.
28:58But,
28:59it seems
29:00to be
29:00working.
29:01With the
29:02caramel saved,
29:04it's just a
29:05question of
29:05adding the
29:06vital
29:06ingredient.
29:08So,
29:08what I'm
29:09trying to
29:09do now is
29:10to cover
29:10all of the
29:11caramel with
29:12apple,
29:12not to
29:13avoid any
29:14gap.
29:15Yeah,
29:16I think
29:16now it's
29:17fine.
29:18While the
29:19tart topping
29:19is put in
29:20the oven to
29:21bake,
29:22Erin has
29:23the perfect
29:23setting to
29:24sample the
29:25French
29:25delicacy.
29:27This is
29:27the
29:27solarium,
29:28which is
29:29really where
29:29we host
29:30breakfast for
29:31our wedding
29:31couples.
29:32It's so
29:32pretty here,
29:33it's like an
29:33interior winter
29:34garden.
29:35Sometimes,
29:35I think,
29:36when we have
29:36a little
29:37moment to
29:37ourselves,
29:38it's a
29:38really lovely
29:38place to
29:39just sort
29:39of escape,
29:40have
29:41afternoon
29:41tea,
29:42and today
29:42we're going
29:43to have
29:43tart tart
29:44tatar here.
29:45With the
29:46apples baking
29:47nicely,
29:48JB adds
29:49the puff
29:50pastry.
29:51Tightly
29:52sealing the
29:53apples
29:54underneath.
29:56And then
29:57it's back
29:58in the oven.
30:00And after
30:01half an hour,
30:02it's almost
30:03ready.
30:04It's good.
30:06Yeah,
30:07I think it's
30:07fine.
30:10So now
30:10I'm going
30:10to flip it
30:11because it's
30:12obviously an
30:12upside-down
30:13tart and
30:14discover the
30:15result.
30:23Yeah,
30:23I think
30:23it's
30:24successful.
30:24It looks
30:25good.
30:25We now
30:25need to
30:26test it.
30:29Crispy
30:30dough,
30:31so that's
30:31good.
30:32That smells
30:33amazing.
30:33It smells
30:34like my
30:34childhood.
30:36It's
30:37It's
30:37It's
30:37good.
30:40That was
30:41excellent.
30:42Good.
30:42Bravo.
30:44Well done.
30:45Really,
30:45really nice.
30:46I think
30:47that was
30:47definitely
30:47a success.
30:49One for
30:49the repertoire.
30:50Okay,
30:50good.
30:51We is
30:51always a
30:51English
30:52caramel.
30:53Well,
30:53you can
30:53decide.
30:54That is
30:54la question.
30:57It's
30:58proved to
30:58be a
30:59triumph.
30:59And as
31:00they indulge
31:01in a
31:02second
31:02slice,
31:03it seems
31:04their
31:04ongoing
31:05renovation
31:05work
31:06will have
31:07to wait
31:07a little
31:07while.
31:08Longer.
31:17Up in
31:18the region
31:18of Brittany,
31:19work is
31:20beginning to
31:21progress.
31:22Today,
31:23Paul and
31:24builder mate
31:24Mick are
31:25putting in
31:26the final
31:26blocks for
31:27the new
31:28terrace
31:28floor.
31:30Having
31:31previously
31:31been the
31:32roof of
31:33the old
31:33silos,
31:34it's
31:34another
31:35floor
31:35they've
31:36had to
31:36build
31:37from
31:37scratch.
31:40Originally,
31:40that block
31:41was about
31:42615
31:44mil,
31:46and then
31:46it sits
31:47in the
31:47beams here
31:47and here.
31:48We've got
31:49the final
31:49beam here,
31:50and it's
31:50only about
31:50320 millimetres,
31:52so we need
31:52to cut them.
31:53Because the
31:54blocks are
31:54hollow,
31:54we've just
31:55filled these
31:55with concrete,
31:56so when we
31:57do cut them,
31:57it gives us
31:58a bit more
31:58concrete to
31:59support the
32:00block.
32:01And we'll
32:01see if this
32:02one fits.
32:07Up it
32:08is.
32:10It's been
32:11two months
32:12in the
32:12making,
32:13but finally
32:14the end
32:15is in
32:16sight.
32:17But down
32:18below,
32:19Donna is
32:20cooking up
32:21another
32:22major
32:23project.
32:24Paul's
32:25upstairs,
32:26making a
32:26lot of
32:26noise and
32:27dust as
32:28usual,
32:28so I've
32:29escaped into
32:29my space,
32:31which is
32:31the kitchen
32:32on the
32:32ground
32:33floor.
32:34And basically
32:35what I'm
32:35trying to do,
32:36I've got all
32:37of these
32:37plans of
32:38my kitchen,
32:39but before
32:40I go and
32:40kind of
32:41finalise the
32:42order and
32:42spend lots
32:43of money,
32:44I'm trying
32:45to really
32:46get a visual
32:47of how it's
32:49going to
32:49play out
32:50in this
32:50space.
32:52I've
32:52basically
32:53got an
32:54L-shaped
32:54kitchen,
32:55which is
32:55down there
32:55and here,
32:56and then
32:57the big
32:57island,
32:58which you
32:59can see
33:00where I've
33:00been putting
33:00pieces of
33:01wood,
33:01trying to
33:01juggle it
33:02round,
33:02because I
33:03want to
33:04retain that
33:04old beam.
33:07It's a
33:08lovely wood
33:09column that
33:09was used
33:10in the
33:10mail.
33:11We have
33:11three of
33:11them in
33:11this room
33:12and we
33:12want to
33:13retain all
33:13of them.
33:14So I
33:15think putting
33:15the wood
33:16and that
33:17out,
33:17it kind
33:18of allows
33:19me to
33:19see the
33:20walk areas
33:21and that
33:22as well,
33:22to make
33:23sure I've
33:24not got
33:24them too
33:25close to
33:26the island.
33:26I've
33:27got plenty
33:27of room
33:28around it
33:28because it's
33:30a huge
33:30room.
33:30I don't
33:31want my
33:31kitchen to
33:32be squashed
33:33up into
33:33one corner
33:34and the
33:35rest of
33:35the room
33:35empty.
33:36So that's
33:37what I'm
33:37doing.
33:38I'm kind
33:38of playing
33:38with pieces
33:39of wood
33:39and spray
33:40paint.
33:43Once I'm
33:43happy with
33:44it,
33:44then I can
33:44go ahead
33:45and get
33:45it all
33:45ordered.
33:47It's
33:47set to
33:48be another
33:49ambitious
33:49job,
33:50but for
33:51now at
33:51least,
33:52the new
33:53terrace
33:53floor is
33:54almost
33:55done.
33:57This
33:58is our
33:58last block.
34:00Good day's
34:00work,
34:01actually half
34:01a day's
34:02work just
34:02getting these
34:02finished and
34:03then that'll
34:04allow us to
34:04get on to
34:05the reinforcement.
34:07And then
34:07some back
34:08props in and
34:09we can get the
34:09concrete ordered.
34:10Put shrimp on the
34:11barbie and no
34:11time at all.
34:14Like a glove.
34:18So that's all the
34:19blocks in and
34:20then weather
34:21permitting we can
34:21order some concrete
34:22for the final
34:23screen on top.
34:27It's done!
34:29Well,
34:29this phase is
34:30done.
34:31Well done,
34:31guys.
34:32It's huge.
34:33Yeah,
34:34it's all
34:34size.
34:36Once it's
34:37concrete on it,
34:38I think it'll
34:38look even bigger,
34:39you know,
34:39visually.
34:40It's a great
34:40space,
34:41absolutely great
34:42space.
34:43Yeah.
34:44Who'd
34:45have believed
34:45this one
34:45starred green.
34:47It's amazing
34:48what you can do
34:48with a bit of
34:49imagination,
34:50isn't it?
34:50Yeah,
34:51and hard
34:51work.
34:52And hard
34:52work.
34:53And cash.
34:54And money.
34:55And time.
34:56And time.
34:59Donna and
35:00Paul are
35:01beginning to
35:01make small
35:02steps.
35:03But with five
35:05derelict floors
35:06to tackle,
35:06it's going to
35:08take years to
35:09bring this
35:09historic building
35:11back to
35:12life.
35:18Coming up,
35:19it's the
35:20moment of
35:21truth for
35:21Terry and
35:22Ashley.
35:23Have you
35:23tested this
35:24before?
35:24Yeah.
35:26You haven't,
35:27have you?
35:27Well,
35:28we'll find out.
35:29And it's
35:30crunch time
35:31for Sharon
35:32and Tim.
35:33Bonjour!
35:34Bonjour!
35:35Come on in!
35:45In the
35:46Normandy region
35:47of northern
35:47France...
35:48You need to
35:49go just a
35:50little bit
35:50more round.
35:51Yeah.
35:52Bang on.
35:52Terry and
35:53Ashley are
35:54fitting the
35:55freshly polished
35:56chandelier in
35:57their new
35:58opulent
35:59guest suite.
36:00That way a bit?
36:01Yeah,
36:02perfect.
36:03Right there.
36:04moment of
36:04truth.
36:06The
36:06electrics
36:07aren't
36:07actually all
36:07hooked up
36:08in here
36:08properly yet.
36:10No.
36:10We're waiting
36:10for the
36:10electrician to
36:11come and
36:11sort that
36:12out.
36:12But we
36:13can put a
36:13little plug
36:14on and
36:15plug it
36:15into an
36:15extension and
36:16try it.
36:17Have you
36:18tested this
36:18before it
36:18went up?
36:19Yeah.
36:21You haven't,
36:22have you?
36:22Well,
36:23we'll find
36:23out.
36:28Hey.
36:30All
36:31working?
36:32It's
36:33beautiful.
36:34It's
36:34stunning.
36:35Absolutely
36:36stunning.
36:36And it
36:36really makes
36:37the wool
36:38glow in
36:38here as
36:38well,
36:38doesn't
36:39it?
36:39Yeah.
36:40The
36:40master
36:41bedroom is
36:42coming
36:42together
36:43nicely.
36:44And
36:45downstairs,
36:46Tracy is
36:47making some
36:47elegant curtains
36:49for the
36:49space using
36:50locally bought
36:51chic fabric.
36:55They've got
36:55the lovely
36:56tapestry
36:56design on
36:57these.
36:58And to
36:58complement it,
36:59we've got a
36:59lovely velvet
37:00fabric to go
37:01on the
37:02inside, which
37:03both go
37:04really, really
37:05well together.
37:05I think they
37:06look fantastic.
37:07So I'm just
37:08going to put
37:08some of the
37:08header tape on
37:09now.
37:10This is what
37:11the hooks
37:11will go into.
37:13Making
37:13curtains on a
37:14chateau scale
37:15means they
37:16need to be at
37:17least three
37:18metres long.
37:23I've
37:23made curtains
37:24before, but
37:24nothing on the
37:25scale of what
37:26we make here.
37:27Or I'm
37:27enjoying it.
37:31Finally, I've
37:32got it all
37:32sewn and
37:33put together
37:34now, so this
37:35is the last
37:35bit.
37:36I'm just
37:36going to put
37:36this trim
37:37on, what
37:37we found.
37:40I'm just
37:40going to fit
37:41this all the
37:41way down,
37:42round the
37:43bottom, and
37:44then we're
37:44done.
37:52Well done.
37:53Do you
37:53think about
37:54that length
37:54leave?
37:55Yeah, yeah,
37:56yeah.
37:56Shall we get
37:56them out and
37:57see what they
37:57look like?
37:57Yep.
37:59Well, it
37:59ties in better
38:00with the trim
38:01now, doesn't
38:01it?
38:02Mm-hmm.
38:03Yeah?
38:03So I'll pull
38:04this over there,
38:05get the other
38:05one out.
38:06Match the
38:07fabric.
38:08Fabric, exact,
38:09yeah.
38:09Yeah, it'd be
38:10brilliant.
38:11Perfect for the
38:11room.
38:12Lovely.
38:12Exciting.
38:13Mm-hmm.
38:15It's yet
38:16another special
38:17touch, but
38:19there is still
38:20some dirty work
38:21ahead for Terry
38:22and Ashley, who
38:23are eager to
38:24scrub up the
38:25newly restored
38:26floor in the
38:27master bedroom.
38:29Yeah.
38:29So if I do
38:29from the middle
38:30there to the
38:30fire.
38:31And then that
38:32end part.
38:32Then that end
38:33part.
38:33And then the
38:34middle, yeah.
38:35It's an
38:36intricate job,
38:38especially as
38:38renovating the
38:39floor took them
38:41several weeks.
38:42So the finish
38:42we're going with
38:43is a hard wax
38:44oil.
38:45Yeah.
38:45It's going to
38:45give us more
38:46of a sort of
38:47authentic look
38:48that we're
38:48wanting.
38:52So we have to
38:52put this on in
38:53quite a specific
38:54way, and it
38:55means that we
38:55first off, we
38:56go against the
38:57grain.
38:58Second off, we
38:59pull it with the
39:00grain.
39:00We have to, when
39:01we do it, lift the
39:02roller off in a
39:04gentle motion so
39:05that we don't
39:05leave any marks.
39:08with two of them
39:09to do the task, it
39:11should prove to be
39:12relatively
39:12straightforward.
39:15I think because
39:16we've done exactly
39:17half the room, to
39:18see the difference,
39:19it's unbelievable.
39:25The last bits.
39:32It's nice doing such
39:33an easy job, but
39:35with instant
39:36results.
39:37It is instant
39:38gratification, isn't
39:39it, when you see it?
39:40Yeah.
39:40The master bedroom
39:42is certainly
39:44starting to shine.
39:46But with the salon
39:47still a work in
39:48progress, and the
39:49second bedroom to
39:50also dress, Terry
39:52and Ashley's
39:53grand new suite
39:54is not yet ready
39:56for kings and
39:58queens.
40:07In the
40:09Limousin region
40:10of central
40:10France, Sharon
40:12and Tim are
40:14racing to finish
40:15off their
40:15tower suite, as
40:17their friends are
40:18due imminently.
40:22How's it going?
40:24It's okay.
40:25Oh, it looks
40:26good.
40:27Sort of tidied
40:27it up.
40:28Yeah, it's been
40:30trickier than I
40:31thought.
40:32So I'm just
40:33going to finish
40:34this bit of
40:34thread now.
40:39done.
40:41With the bed
40:41crown complete,
40:43they're just
40:43hoping they have
40:44enough time to
40:46do the finishing
40:47touches.
40:48It's called
40:49attention to detail.
40:51Having put so
40:52much thought into
40:52the room, Sharon
40:54wants everything
40:55in pride of place.
40:58Are we on the
40:59carpet?
41:00Yeah, go on the
41:00carpet.
41:07Happy with it?
41:08Yeah, I think,
41:09um, yeah, I am
41:11happy with it.
41:12It's very nice.
41:13Well done.
41:14We did it.
41:15Good job.
41:1812 months ago,
41:20this empty space
41:22was bland,
41:23uninspiring,
41:25and very dated.
41:29Now, it's been
41:31transformed into an
41:33elegant and
41:34sophisticated guest
41:36bedroom.
41:38Complete with an
41:39equally impressive
41:40en suite,
41:43Sharon's choice of
41:45bold floral
41:46wallpaper makes
41:47an instant
41:48statement,
41:49while the
41:51addition of
41:51luxury curtains,
41:54a lavish bed
41:55crown,
41:56and antiques
41:58belonging to
41:59the chateau
41:59ensures the rich
42:01history of the
42:02castle will be
42:03on display for
42:05many years
42:06to come.
42:08OK.
42:16It's time to
42:17see if their
42:18hard work has
42:20paid off.
42:24Wow!
42:27Good, this
42:28me.
42:30Beautiful.
42:31Impressed.
42:32It really is
42:33beautiful.
42:34Do you like it?
42:35Oh, yes.
42:35The lights and the
42:36chandelier, gorgeous.
42:38Marino, what do
42:39you think?
42:39Because it's your
42:40country, it's one
42:41of your chateaus.
42:42Lincoln English.
42:44Break the rules or
42:45something like that.
42:46No, no, really.
42:47Everything was in the
42:48chateau, so I've just
42:49rearranged it in here.
42:50Just replace and
42:52use the best of
42:53what you could.
42:55The bed crown,
42:56that was in the
42:57attic.
42:57Oh, yes.
42:58So I dusted that
42:59off and brought it
43:00down.
43:00I like the
43:00trimming.
43:01It's beautiful, isn't
43:01it?
43:02It matches all the...
43:02He picked it all up,
43:03all the different
43:04shades and colours.
43:05You must be proud.
43:07Would you like to
43:08see the bathroom?
43:09Oh, yes.
43:10Wow.
43:11Oh.
43:13I like the
43:14painting, but it
43:15reflects...
43:15Yes, it's a smaller
43:17pattern.
43:17Yeah, it's original.
43:19You must be happy to
43:20have finished.
43:23This has been going
43:24for a long time.
43:25Oh, I'm super
43:25pleased that you both
43:26like it.
43:27I'm just amazed at the
43:28amount of work they've
43:29done since they've
43:31moved in.
43:32This is the first
43:32chateau I've ever been
43:33in and it is
43:34absolutely wonderful
43:35and to actually
43:36stay here
43:37would be lovely.
43:38As a French woman,
43:40I'm happy to see
43:41that it's done
43:43in respect.
43:44It's done with
43:46really good taste.
43:48Oh, I was really
43:49pleased with how
43:50that went.
43:51To have two friends
43:52come round and
43:53like the room,
43:54that's such a relief.
43:56It's an appreciation.
43:58that it was a nice
43:59room, so that's
44:01what we want because
44:01we want the general
44:02public to enjoy it.
44:04So it can't just
44:04be my opinion because
44:06I wouldn't want to
44:06have to take that
44:07wallpaper off and
44:07start all over again.
44:08So, yeah, nice
44:09feeling.
44:10It's been a huge
44:12success.
44:13And with Sharon and
44:14Tim's first bedroom
44:15suite ready for
44:17paying guests, it
44:18will only be a matter
44:20of time before the
44:21money starts rolling
44:29in.
44:31Next time, it's
44:33one step forward,
44:34two steps back for
44:36Terry and Ashley.
44:37I'm going to have to
44:38take up all of the
44:40bigger square ones.
44:41This Chatelaine takes
44:43on a marathon of a
44:44mural.
44:45It's going more slowly
44:46than I had originally
44:47thought.
44:48We absolutely have to
44:49have this bathroom
44:50ready.
44:51And one couple are
44:53at the height of
44:53a tricky turret
44:55makeover.
44:56Can you come out
44:57from underneath there
44:58because if it does
44:59collapse, I've got no
45:00one to drive me to
45:01hospital.
45:04I'm going to have to
45:22I'm going to have to
45:30have to do it.
