00:01Over the winter months, you may have heard of some Leeds venues becoming welcome spaces,
00:06which provide a warm, safe place where people can gather for free and enjoy a hot drink and some company.
00:12But what about during the summer?
00:14While following the UK recording its hottest ever day in the month of May,
00:18the Council is encouraging residents to be prepared for summer and potential heat waves
00:23and will be providing access to cool spaces,
00:26which will be open for people to help them stay comfortable and well during hot weather.
00:32These are indoor venues that help reduce health risks from heat by offering a place to rest and cool down.
00:38They're not intended to provide medical care or specialist support,
00:42but offer free drinking water and spaces to rest.
00:46A selection of community hubs and libraries and some leisure centres and neighbourhood networks
00:51will offer the service until the 30th September.
00:54Hot weather can pose a health risk for all, but for some people,
00:59particularly older people, young children, pregnant women and those with long-term health conditions,
01:04the risk is greater.
01:06The Council have also been highlighting how tick activity rises over the spring and summer months,
01:13with the risk of being bitten increasing.
01:15In rare cases, ticks can spread diseases such as Lyme disease,
01:19and they're particularly common in grassy and wooded areas.
01:23Sticking to clearly defined paths when out walking can help reduce any risks.
