00:00how you doing everybody i'm screaming scott the 36th grand prix in detroit
00:05runs the history of the streets of downtown detroit may 29th through 31st and we have the
00:11proud pleasure of actually having one of the race car drivers here today would you please welcome
00:16to our microphones roman and hopefully i'll say the last name right here we go the english yes
00:22that was good i like the accent oh you did okay that's the only way i can pronounce it if
00:26i say
00:26the accent on this roman uh right of our neighbor from windsor canada exactly how's it going eh
00:32it's great it's great i'm losing my canadian accent but i live in the states now but right i can
00:37try
00:38now uh what was the first impression uh uh whenever you came to detroit i grew up coming to detroit
00:45once or twice a week whether that be for a dinner a sports game um had some families and friends
00:51that
00:51also um lived in detroit or went to school here my sister went to michigan state so we're over here
00:56a lot but i'm sorry yeah well i'm just it's her loss isn't it um but no i i love
01:02detroit i have a lot
01:03of great memories here and it's uh a lot of the great memories being the detroit grand prix watching
01:07it growing up so it's cool to be here and uh be competing well your resume is huge you know
01:11that
01:12don't you it's just i became the youngest ever driver to win the porsche gt3 cup challenge and
01:19that's in 2017 if you also the rolex 24 in daytona uh you've won the detroit grand prix once
01:25how are you able to do it again can't you let somebody else win once in a while yeah hopefully
01:30that's a hopefully that's a reoccurring problem would be nice to win here again so but uh i have
01:35to ask you i'm at most race car drivers uh growing up go-kart you had your own go-kart
01:42correct and you
01:43raced go-karts how did you get into go-karting as a kid and how old were you when you
01:48started
01:48i think i started go-karting around five i started racing at nine or ten um but would just go
01:53out and
01:53enjoy it with my my dad um my dad could have put me in a normal sport but put me
01:58into uh go-karting
01:59at that that young age and kind of just was fortunate enough to be involved in something
02:04that i fell in love with and i'm able to uh to call my job now but um was always
02:09kind of addicted to
02:09it and knew that that's what i wanted to do so now did you uh fool with the engine like
02:13take the
02:14governor off and cheat you know no cheating no cheating it's pretty highly regulated believe it
02:18or not really they yeah these events were pretty uh pretty strict i mean honestly on par with some
02:25of the world championship racing i've done and in le mans and stuff like that the level was pretty high
02:30um so yeah i mean we uh it was it was very different than what people expect go-kart racing
02:36to be like really yeah now how many awards and trophies do you have racing at cj barrymores
02:44zero you got me that's a challenge you got me beat well i don't have any either but i i
02:49would love to
02:50challenge you someday if you get a chance now again uh chevrolet detroit grand prix sponsored by
02:55uh lear uh it's it's just an amazing that the track has come back uh to the original form
03:02uh here in the motor city uh what was your first impression uh did did you race both tracks at
03:09all
03:09i did what what is your comparison to the way the track was and to how it's back to what
03:15it
03:15originally was yeah i mean it's very different i think the thing that really resonates with the
03:19new downtown track is how great of an event it is um bell isle obviously is close to downtown you
03:25drive 10 or 15 minutes and you're there but having the event be in the heart of the city where
03:30people
03:30can appreciate you know the restaurants the buildings things like that as well and for us
03:35to be able to wake up in the morning and walk to the track isn't a bad thing either so
03:38um i really
03:39enjoy having the event downtown they do such a good job of having things for fans to do as well
03:44um
03:44i think there's a car show on friday night um there's always seems to be concerts and things going
03:49on in the city i think be able to to walk to the event and walk back and just be
03:54in the heart of
03:54detroit is something that's really cool what were some of the hot spots that you love about down
03:58have you went to mom's spaghetti yet i have not but i've heard about it i sadly moved i sadly
04:03moved
04:03out of uh out of windsor three or four years ago and before that i was in college so i
04:07didn't spend
04:08too much time um exploring on my own but we used to go to uh slow's barbecue being my friends
04:13which
04:13we loved um san morello was a cool spot um there's a lot of great restaurants well there's a lot
04:20of
04:21great places i went to in windsor also it was uh one was called the gold dollar
04:24uh the million dollar saloon oh for for some stranger no but actually so there was uh right
04:33on the shoreline there was a great arcade right on the water in windsor yeah in windsor uh when i
04:40grew up but uh also and stuff dating as a kid i knew and stuff if i if i wanted
04:46to score i would take
04:47i would take my date over to canada just so they could see detroit from across the water i never
04:53used
04:53that uh that theory to cross the water but maybe if i move back here i'll remember that now here's
04:59a question for you for as a race car driver how fast is too fast never fast enough never fast
05:08never fast enough how do you know how the fastest you've ever gone in a race car yeah i think
05:13i mean
05:15what is it i gotta do the conversion now because we're in america yeah yeah you're here now
05:19to be 220 to 230 in le mans really whatever 330 something kilometers an hour is now i got uh
05:26growing up a triumph tr7 convertible and i got that up to 180 and it scared me miles an hour
05:33yeah that's terrifying yeah it scared me to death i've been driving on 696 here scares me to death
05:39yeah but i i can't even imagine now with that uh the steering wheel that you use is i i've
05:46seen
05:46pictures of it how much it's evolved it looks like you're playing a video game while you're while you're
05:52racing yeah there's so much on that so what is all on a steering wheel nowadays it's pretty intense um
05:58moving from gt cars to now hypercar um the rules for what you can do and change in the car
06:04are basically completely open yeah um so we have systems that pretty much cover anything you can
06:10think of if if we have something in our head that's bothering us with a car we say uh matt
06:15we need a
06:16button for this that would be really helpful some really smart guys that are way smarter than all of
06:20us go in a back room type in the computer plug it into the car and they say this button
06:23does xyz
06:24we have a massive manual and on that manual i mean i can go through it all the buttons do
06:30but it'll
06:30take an hour but for example we have what we call a multi-switch and that multi-switch will be
06:35like
06:35multi-alpha bravo charlie all that and they'll tell us on the radio multi-fox trot two plus four
06:42and you have to be you know you're driving down whatever road it is in detroit that the straight
06:46away's on bouncing your head trying to like find which one's f and remember the alphabet and then
06:51yeah so it's pretty uh it's pretty intense and that that's something that was a big challenge
06:56going to hyper cars um staying calm and still staying in the rhythm while having to do all
07:00those control changes because it's pretty hectic now could you do it like a james bond thing and
07:04tell you guys hey can you put an oil slick button for the guys behind me and i could win
07:08this race
07:08yeah if there's oil coming out of the back of it it's probably not a good thing so now being
07:12that it
07:13is like a video game do you play video games yourself i do not um i do a lot of
07:18simulator stuff
07:19right which i guess is kind of a glorified video game but my next question is like uh i used
07:24to play
07:24atari's pole position all the time have you ever played that game i have not no you have to
07:29and stuff being a race car driver it's it's it it's it's odd it's just amazing i mean i could
07:36just
07:36imagine you kicking my ass on something like that is maybe it would help my racing career if i start
07:41playing it now uh another thing you being in windsor i have to ask you this question okay oh it's
07:48it's
07:48really serious let's hear it the journey song don't stop believing when steve perry sings born
07:55and raised in south detroit is he actually singing about windsor that's a good question
08:02i always thought detroit was south of windsor i always considered michigan to be south of where i
08:09grew up right but we're kind of in a little weird bubble where it could be north it could be
08:13south
08:13could be east or west it's it's one of those unanswered questions i had to ask yeah i'm more
08:17i more like when kid rock talks about lake st clair that's that's good that's that resonates with me
08:23i grew up on lake st clair so that's cool now uh do you listen to a music while you're
08:27driving at all
08:28or is it all just it's all just the uh not even during practice no no i honestly don't think
08:33that
08:33would go really well there's so much going on right in the car that you just your thoughts are
08:38already your brain's going 100 miles an hour all the time really now what kind of music do you
08:42listen to in your off time i am very um unbiased with my music taste i listen to country i
08:49listen
08:50to rock i listen to house music rap whatever i'm it depends on the mood depends where i am what
08:56i'm
08:56doing now my suggestion for racing i used to play pole position and i would listen to red barchetta from
09:04rush okay that was that's all about a race car rush is good rush is canadian also aren't they
09:10yes oh gee you're just realizing that come on you're kidding i was gonna ask you what are your
09:15what what are your favorite canadian bands i mean rush you kind of have to say yes pretty phenomenal
09:19so what what other canadian bands do you uh do you know any offhand that not rock necessarily
09:25there's some canadian rappers triumph triumph is playing here this friday they're not canadian are
09:30no yeah really yeah yeah really you know i could go even deeper like uh anne murray and the defranco
09:37family but i'm showing my age well robin de angelis thank you so much for taking the time again it's
09:45the
09:4536 grand prix and um i want to make a prediction you're gonna win you're gonna win this thing that
09:53would be phenomenal and i love your prediction so all right now if you do win a race between you
10:00and me at cj barrymore's is that cool since you put it into the world that we were gonna win
10:04then
10:05it's here it's your doing so yeah i i owe it to you then if that's the case awesome the
10:09detroit
10:09grand prix it's the 36th detroit grand prix event in detroit may 29th through 31st roman thank you so
10:17much for taking the time being with us thanks for having me appreciate it happy racing that's it
10:21you
