00:02so we just came off of um may being mental health awareness month yep and i think that we should
00:09be
00:10aware of mental health all the time 12 months out of the year right not just one so i wanted
00:15to
00:15share the story with you donnie because you and i have both been very open and honest about our
00:21um dealings with anxiety absolutely and it affects people in very different ways um and i shortly
00:28after my father died in 2017 i found myself having panic attacks and then i went on medication and i
00:35started seeing a therapist and uh really was trying to get myself um balanced i guess as much as one
00:43can
00:43be right and then we got a dog and honestly the dog is what saved me really i went off
00:51everything
00:52once i got my dog and i remember the doctor checking in with me saying hey just want to
00:58see how everything's going and i was like you're gonna think i'm crazy but i went off the meds
01:02because i got a dog and she said no i think dogs cure everything especially that dog oh my gosh
01:07he
01:07is the best he paints happy trees i know his name is bob ross he's a standard poodle and he
01:11is just
01:12the love of my life sorry to the rest of my family but they know how i feel um so
01:17anxiety disorders are
01:18one of the most common mental health conditions in the united states around 19 percent of adults
01:24having one in the last year according to the national institute of mental health and that's
01:28just been diagnosed right like so many people are dealing with things like anxiety without even
01:34realizing that's what it is like i was having talk about it panic attacks and i didn't even know
01:38that's what it was yeah um so it turns out that dogs are very helpful when it comes to dealing
01:44with
01:44your anxiety there's a calming sense that they can provide but not just any old dog so they actually
01:51came out with a list of the best dogs to help treat anxiety okay best dog breeds right so um
02:01one of them
02:01is in newfoundland they're gigantic oh they're the massive right yes they call them gentle giants
02:08because they're known for being calm and steady and they have a strong attachment to their humans
02:13and that's helpful for anyone with anxiety i like these dogs labrador retriever also made the list
02:19one of the most popular dogs uh breed dog breeds in the united states has been for decades and it's
02:26because they have this eager to please personality they just want their owners to be happy so they
02:32kind of do whatever they can to make that happen which is really sweet golden retrievers also another
02:37really good one gentle nature emotional awareness very popular therapy dogs poodles there it is i didn't
02:45even know that when i got my bob ross both poodles standard and miniature poodles can be excellent
02:50therapy or emotional support dogs um they're invested in making sure that their humans are okay and they
02:55stick close to humans in stimulating situations like at the dog park which i find really interesting i feel
03:02like my dog would not stay stay by me at a dog park but he knows when i am depressed
03:09like he knows when
03:11something isn't right with me and he stays right by my side yeah that's how my dogs or my my
03:17parents
03:17dogs were with my mom yeah you know whenever she had any like any kind of surgery or doctor's appointment
03:22they knew how anxious she would get they're like right by her i know i was like that's that's awesome
03:27it provides such comfort and then the last one on this list is a greyhound really surprisingly
03:32retired racing greyhounds can be very calm at home and the experts say that makes them great therapy
