00:00What's going on everyone, and welcome back to the channel.
00:02Today we're talking about one of the most interesting stories to come out of Sony's latest state of play,
00:07and surprisingly, it wasn't a specific game, announcement, a new trailer, or a major reveal.
00:14Instead, it was what the showcase unintentionally revealed about the current state of the gaming industry,
00:19and the enormous shadow being cast by one game that wasn't even present during the presentation.
00:25That game, of course, is Grand Theft Auto VI.
00:28As I watched Sony's state of play, one thing became increasingly obvious.
00:32Every publisher in the industry appears to be planning its future around GTA VI.
00:38Rockstar didn't show up, Sony didn't dedicate a segment to the game,
00:41there wasn't a new trailer, there wasn't new gameplay, there wasn't even a release date announcement.
00:47Yet, GTA VI somehow managed to dominate the conversation anyway.
00:51The reason is simple.
00:52The games that were shown, the release windows that were announced,
00:55and the timing of upcoming projects, all pointed towards the same conclusion.
01:00Publishers aren't trying to compete with GTA VI, they're trying to avoid it.
01:05That might sound dramatic at first, but when you take a step back and examine the situation,
01:10it becomes difficult to argue otherwise.
01:13GTA VI isn't simply another big budget release.
01:16It isn't just another open world game.
01:18It isn't even just another rockstar title.
01:21GTA VI is shaping up to be the single biggest launch in gaming history.
01:25Not one of the biggest, but the biggest.
01:29When Grand Theft Auto V launched back in 2013, it immediately became a phenomenon.
01:34The game generated over a billion dollars faster than any entertainment product before it.
01:39It sold millions of copies in a matter of days.
01:42More importantly, it never really stopped selling.
01:45More than a decade later, GTA V remains one of the best-selling games on the market.
01:50It has survived the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 generation,
01:54the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 generation,
01:57and the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 generation.
02:00Very few games in history have demonstrated that level of longevity.
02:05Most publishers spend years trying to build franchises that remain relevant for five years.
02:10Rockstar managed to create a game that remained relevant for over a decade.
02:15That kind of success changes the way the entire industry thinks.
02:19The moment GTA VI was officially announced,
02:22executives across gaming probably started asking the same question.
02:26Not, how do we beat GTA VI,
02:28but rather, how do we avoid launching near GTA VI?
02:33That's a very different conversation.
02:35Normally, competition is viewed as healthy.
02:38If a publisher believes its game is good enough,
02:40it launches where it's ready and lets consumers decide.
02:43But GTA VI isn't normal competition.
02:46Launching against GTA VI would be like opening a small movie theater
02:50on the same day the most anticipated blockbuster in history premieres.
02:54Even if your product is good,
02:56people are going to be talking about something else.
02:59One of the things State of Play highlighted
03:01was just how carefully release schedules are being managed right now.
03:05Publishers appear to be looking for safe zones.
03:07They're looking for launch windows
03:08where they can maximize media coverage,
03:11player attention,
03:12and sales potential before Rockstar arrives.
03:15The reason isn't difficult to understand.
03:18The modern gaming market runs on attention.
03:20It doesn't matter how much money you've spent developing a game
03:23if nobody is talking about it.
03:25It doesn't matter how polished your product is
03:28if every gaming website is focused on something else.
03:31It doesn't matter how impressive your launch trailer looks
03:33if every YouTube creator is making GTA VI videos instead.
03:38Attention has become one of the most valuable currencies in entertainment.
03:43Think about what happens when Rockstar releases even a small piece of information.
03:47A single screenshot can generate thousands of articles,
03:51reaction videos, social media posts, and discussions.
03:54When Rockstar releases a trailer, it becomes a global event.
03:58Millions of people watch it almost instantly.
04:00Content creators spend weeks analyzing every frame.
04:04Fans speculate endlessly about details hidden within the footage.
04:08Now imagine what happens when the actual game launches.
04:12Every major gaming outlet will be covering it.
04:15Every major streamer will be playing it.
04:17Every major gaming podcast will be discussing it.
04:20Social media will be flooded with clips, discoveries, theories, easter eggs, and reactions.
04:26It will dominate headlines, not for a day or a week, but potentially for months.
04:32That creates a problem for everyone else.
04:35Even excellent games could struggle to gain traction during that period.
04:39A publisher might spend hundreds of millions of dollars developing a game
04:43only to find itself completely drowned out by Rockstar's latest release.
04:47Reviews might receive less attention.
04:49Marketing campaigns might be less effective.
04:52Social media engagement might suffer.
04:54However, sales projections could be impacted.
04:57And that's before we even talk about player budgets.
05:01One of the biggest factors working against publishers is the reality that most gamers don't buy every game that releases.
05:07Players have limited time and limited money.
05:10If someone spends $70 or $80 on GTA 6, that may be $70 or $80 they aren't spending elsewhere.
05:17If someone invests 200 hours exploring Rockstar's massive open world, that's 200 hours they aren't dedicating to another game.
05:26Publishers know this.
05:28They understand that GTA 6 isn't just competing for sales.
05:32It's competing for time.
05:33In some ways, time may be even more valuable than money.
05:37Look at how players consume games today.
05:40Open world games are larger than ever.
05:42Live service titles encourage long-term engagement.
05:46Multiplayer communities can keep people invested for years.
05:49Backlogs continue growing because new releases arrive faster than most players can finish them.
05:55When GTA 6 launches, it isn't just going to take up space on a player's hard drive.
06:00It's going to take up space in their schedule.
06:03That's why State of Play felt so revealing.
06:06Many of the games shown appear to be positioning themselves strategically.
06:10Some are launching well before GTA 6.
06:12Others are targeting windows that appear relatively safe.
06:16Publishers seem determined to avoid finding themselves trapped in direct competition with Rockstar.
06:22And honestly, who can blame them?
06:25History has repeatedly shown that Rockstar operates on a different level than almost everyone else in the industry.
06:31Red Dead Redemption 2 became one of the most acclaimed and commercially successful games ever created.
06:37GTA 5 became a cultural phenomenon.
06:40Even years after release, Rockstar titles continue generating attention that many publishers can only dream about.
06:46What's particularly impressive is how Rockstar manages to maintain excitement despite revealing relatively little information.
06:54Most publishers rely on constant communication.
06:57They release developer updates, gameplay showcases, roadmaps, interviews, convention appearances, and preview events.
07:05Rockstar often does the opposite.
07:07They disappear for months at a time and somehow become even more popular.
07:12That level of anticipation is almost unheard of.
07:15The gaming industry has spent years trying to understand how Rockstar does it.
07:20But the answer may simply be trust.
07:22Players trust Rockstar to deliver something significant.
07:26Whether every Rockstar game lives up to expectations is a separate debate.
07:30But the perception of quality is incredibly strong.
07:33That perception matters because it influences consumer behavior.
07:37Many players aren't just interested in GTA 6.
07:40They're planning around GTA 6.
07:42They're setting aside money for GTA 6.
07:45They're upgrading consoles for GTA 6.
07:48They're preparing vacation time for GTA 6.
07:51Few games generate that kind of commitment before launch.
07:55State of Play made it clear that publishers are doing something similar.
07:59They're adjusting schedules.
08:01They're evaluating release windows.
08:03They're considering alternative launch dates.
08:05They're trying to ensure that years of development work don't get overshadowed by a single release.
08:11Another fascinating aspect of this situation is what it says about the current state of blockbuster
08:16gaming.
08:17The industry has become increasingly dependent on a handful of massive franchises.
08:22Development costs continue rising.
08:24Marketing budgets continue growing.
08:26Expectations continue increasing.
08:28As a result, publishers are becoming more risk-averse.
08:33Launching near GTA 6 represents a risk.
08:36A major risk.
08:37If your game underperforms because it launched too close to Rockstar's latest blockbuster,
08:42investors aren't going to care that you had bad timing.
08:45They're going to look at the sales numbers.
08:47Publishers know this, which is why many appear determined to avoid that scenario altogether.
08:53In a strange way, Sony's state of play became less about the games that were shown,
08:57and more about the industry's collective reaction to GTA 6.
09:01The showcase acted like a snapshot of a market preparing for impact.
09:05It was a reminder that Rockstar's next game isn't simply another product entering the marketplace.
09:11It's an event capable of reshaping release schedules across the entire industry.
09:16The reality is that there are probably very few games that could force publishers to rethink
09:20their plans on this scale.
09:22Maybe a new mainline Mario.
09:24Maybe a major Call of Duty.
09:26Perhaps a brand new console launch.
09:28But even those examples don't seem quite comparable to what GTA 6 represents right now.
09:34This is a game that has been anticipated for years.
09:37This is a game that carries the legacy of one of the most successful entertainment franchises ever created.
09:43This is a game that many analysts expect to break records almost immediately.
09:48So when people look at state of play and wonder why so many publishers seem eager to secure
09:53release dates before Rockstar arrives, the answer is fairly straightforward.
09:57They're scared.
09:58Not because their games are bad.
10:00Not because they lack confidence in their products.
10:03But because they understand the reality of the situation.
10:06GTA 6 is expected to dominate gaming conversations, dominate social media,
10:11dominate streaming platforms, dominate news coverage, and dominate sales charts.
10:16Going head-to-head with a release like that isn't brave.
10:19It might simply be bad business.
10:22Sony's state of play didn't explicitly say any of this.
10:26Nobody walked onto the stage and admitted that publishers were avoiding Rockstar.
10:30Nobody needed to.
10:32The release calendar spoke for itself.
10:34The gaming industry has spent years waiting for GTA 6.
10:38Now that it's finally approaching, everyone appears to be making plans accordingly.
10:43And if some of the biggest publishers in the world are rearranging their schedules because
10:48of one game, that tells you everything you need to know about just how enormous Grand Theft Auto 6 really
10:53is.
10:54What do you think?
10:56Are publishers right to stay out of GTA 6's way?
10:58Or should more companies be willing to compete directly with Rockstar?
