Today's contestants on this very early edition of Supermarket Sweep from 1993 are Julie & Liz from London, Jim & Sharon from Birmingham, and Diane & Donna from Nottingham. Dale Winton hosts wearing a lime green jacket and snazzy tie, but who will be impressing come the Super Sweep? Although there are varying time differences at the points gathering, will it be the clear favourite or will someone else come from behind to earn the chance to go for the £2,000 cash prize?

This is an upgrade on the previous version of this episode, which was distorted in picture. Hopefully this will look normal enough for viewers and be a bit better quality too.

01:39that they'll take with them out there into our supermarket
01:41and hopefully go for the £2,000.

01:45I'm going to start you all off with one minute each.
01:47At the end of the day, the more time you have,
01:49the more shopping you can do.
01:51A little taster of what we're going to get you to do a bit later on.
01:53We're going to run what we call the Mini Sweep.
01:55So, if you're ready, players who are going first,
01:57step forward, ready to press the buzzer.
01:59I'm after the name of an item somewhere in our supermarket.
02:02As soon as you know the product I'm talking about,
02:05buzz in, OK?
02:07Orange, lemon or lime
02:08to put on your toast at breakfast time.

02:21You did the easy bit.
02:22We've just added you 10 seconds of that anyway.
02:24For a £25 bonus, Diane,
02:27you're going to run wild in the aisles.
02:28I want you to find the specially marked jar of marmalade now.
02:32It bears one of these,
02:33a sweep sticker.
02:35If you get the marmalade back to me within 30 seconds,
02:39I will add a further £25 bonus to your score.
02:42Right.
02:42Are you ready?
02:43Yeah.
02:43Off you go.
02:44Go, Diane.
02:46Go, Diane.
02:47Go, Diane.
02:49Go on, Diane.

02:57Come on.
02:59Diane, try six.
03:01Yeah!
03:03Come here.
03:07You're moving like lightning there.
03:08Don't go...
03:10It wasn't that bad, was it?
03:12No.
03:12It's got the sticker, wasn't it?
03:13I will let you get your breath back.
03:14Go and join Donna while I have a chat to the other players today.
03:21Right, well, let's have a chat to Julie and Liz.
03:23Welcome to Supermarket Sweep.
03:24Thank you, Julian.
03:25Now, listen, Liz, I know you hate diets, don't you?
03:28I hate it, yes.
03:28You hate it.
03:29So do I.
03:30And it's a shame, because there's so much attempt to hear today.
03:32I know.
03:33But think of the money rather than the goods.
03:34Okay, have a good day.
03:36Well, Julie, one thing you love is men with money, I believe.
03:38Yes, I do indeed do.
03:39Why is money so important to you?
03:41You can buy lots of everything with it.
03:43Is it really?
03:43And not pay bills, and that's what I like not doing.
03:45Well, I hope you get enough money to do yourself, so you don't have to worry about that.
03:48Jim and Sharon, welcome to Supermarket Sweep.
03:50Hello there, Dale.
03:51Now, one of you entered a beauty competition.
03:53I thought it would have been Sharon, but in actual fact, it was Jim.
03:56That's right.
03:56How well did you do, Jim?
03:57Well, actually, I came third.
04:00Where was this?
04:01It was in a holiday camp a few years ago.
04:04Right.
04:04Well, I'm sure all the girls at home watching will think he should have won anyway.
04:07No, they don't.
04:08Sharon, welcome to Supermarket Sweep.
04:10It was lovely to see you.
04:11And you had an unusual encounter with him in a kilt?
04:14Yes.
04:14Well, when we got married, he forgot to tell me that he would be wearing a kilt on the day.
04:21So as I went to walk down the aisle, out stepped this husband-to-be in a kilt, well, I
04:27screamed.
04:28Well, who wouldn't?
04:29And it was all on video.
04:30This is understandable.
04:31Yes, I can imagine, yes.
04:32Kilts and beauty competitions is quite worrying, actually.
04:34I'm a bit worried about them, actually.
04:35Diane and Donna, welcome to the programme.
04:37Hello.
04:38A great story about you two.
04:39One went to the supermarket, didn't pay, forgot to take her money.
04:42Now, which one was Donna, was it?
04:44No, Diane.
04:44Diane!
04:46Well, today you don't have to.
04:47We're going to give you the money.
04:49That suit you?
04:49Yeah.
04:49Right.
04:50And Donna, very quickly, dentures.
04:52I know that someone found...
04:53Not mine.
04:54Not your dentures.
04:55Not mine, all real.
04:56What happened?
04:56My mother's dentures.
04:58She was on holiday a couple of weeks ago, and my niece saw her cleaning her teeth in the
05:02bathroom and putting them in, and she ran out to her mum and started screaming,
05:05Mummy, Mummy, Nana's eating her teeth.
05:08Oh, wonderful.
05:09Welcome to Sweep.
05:10Have a great day.
05:11Really, really enjoy it.
05:12What we'll do is we'll say goodbye to Liz, Sharon and Donna.
05:14We'll see you a bit later.
05:14But Jim, Diane and Julie, step forward.
05:16You're going to play the first game.

06:56We're going to talk about proverbs now.
06:58You know those sayings that someone always says to you when you least want to hear it?
07:01You know the kind of thing?
07:02You know, when you've done something and they think, well, if you'd known this proverb, it wouldn't have happened.
07:06I'm going to give you a choice of possible words that all relate to one proverb or another.
07:10Some are unusual, some are very well known.
07:12Four chances to gain ten seconds apiece, so nearly a minute up for grabs here.

07:59Isn't that unusual?
08:00I didn't know that one too well.
08:01I've heard it before, but it's not one of the more commonly known ones, is it?
08:04Half a blank is better than none.
08:06Jim.
08:06Half a loaf.
08:07Let's see if that's right.
08:08Yeah, it had to be, didn't it?
08:12Let's bring back your partners.

08:38So we'll see you a bit later on.
08:41APPLAUSE
08:44This is the game we call Themes.
08:46So all the answers, all the words I'm looking for, relate to one particular theme.
08:50And the theme for this game is dinner party, OK?
08:52So what I'm going to do is I'm going to give you a series of clues,
08:55and the answer is a word that will be related to one of those words, or all of them, in
08:59fact.
09:00But the actual theme is dinner party, OK?
09:03So if it's a dinner party, have a go.
09:06Buzz in.
09:06Five chances.
09:08Right, here we go.

10:12So, are you ready?
10:12In front of you, you'll see a true or false button.
10:15I'm going to give you a quote.
10:16If I'm right, if I'm telling you the truth,
10:18you actually put true.
10:19If I'm not, press the F for false.
10:21OK, are you ready to play the game?
10:22Yep.
10:23Here we go.
10:24Kiwi fruits are also known as Chinese gooseberries.
10:26True or false?
10:27Now, make your choice.
10:30OK, Liz, what did you think?
10:31True.
10:31OK.
10:32Sharon, what did you decide?
10:33True.
10:34OK.
10:35Donna?
10:35True.
10:36You thought true.
10:37You all get ten seconds.
10:38Of course, they are.
10:39Yeah, absolutely.
10:40APPLAUSE
10:43And would I lie to you?
10:45Well, maybe.
10:46True or false?

10:50True or false?
10:52Enter.
10:52Make your choices.

10:55False.
10:56False.
10:56Sharon?

11:11True or false?
11:12Please, make your choice.
11:18OK.
11:19Liz, did you decide I was telling you the truth?
11:21True.
11:22True.
11:22Sharon?
11:23True.
11:24OK.
11:24Donna?
11:25True.
11:25OK.
11:26Let's see if you're right.
11:28Well, it is true.
11:29Malt liquor is whiskey, bourbon and everything else that goes into it.
11:32So I've added ten seconds to your score.
11:34APPLAUSE
11:35I think it might be a good idea to bring back your partners.
11:38Let's welcome them back.
11:45We have a great score situation here.
11:47We really do.
11:47Let's have a look and see who's in the lead and who's a little bit behind.
11:50Well, Diane and Donna, not too far behind.
11:51You have one minute and 50.
11:53Julie and Liz, you have two minutes and 20 seconds.
11:55And Jim and Sharon, you have two minutes and 30 seconds.
11:58Great.
12:02But you know what I always say?
12:03Often, at the end of the day, it isn't how much time you've got, but how well you shop.
12:07But anyway, here's another chance to grab a full minute in the round robin.
12:10What that means is you take it in turns to answer, change over as soon as we've got a
12:14correct answer.
12:15So, returning players, you're going to go first.
12:17Julie, Jim and Diane, step forward for the round robin.
12:19Here we go.
12:20It's all about video films.
12:22What that means is have a look at our video library over there.
12:24We've got a whole host of good movies.
12:26Old ones, new ones, whatever.
12:28And all the questions are related to the stars and films.
12:31Buzz in as soon as you know who or what I'm talking about.
12:34Which comedian on Meeting Fans, instead of giving out autographs, hands out cards reading,
12:39This certifies that you have a personal encounter with me and that you found me warm, polite,
12:44intelligent and funny.
12:45He was also a star of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

12:56Who's the other one?
12:57It was the other one.
12:58They were both in it.
13:00But he gave the quote.

13:07Donna.
13:09Oh, God, it's gone.
13:10It's gone.
13:11Sorry.
13:11You want to have a go, Sharon and Liz?
13:14Bruce Willis, Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep star in which movie?
13:16It was a great film.
13:18Love You To Death.

13:23No.
13:24Yeah.
13:24No.
13:24Death Becomes Her.
13:25Out of time.
13:26You were close.
13:27Death Becomes Her.
13:28God.
13:29Change.
13:31In which city is the Commitment set?
13:34Julie.
13:35Dublin.
13:35Yeah, sounds right.
13:36Ten seconds.
13:37Change.
13:40Who did Adam West and Burt Ward portray in The Nineteen Donna?
13:44Batman and Robin.
13:46I think that's right.
13:46Ten seconds.
13:47Change.
13:50Name the feature film and sitcom that starred Reg Varney.
13:54Jim.
13:55On The Buses.
13:56It was great.
13:56You've just got ten seconds.
13:57What a change.
14:00And here's your last chance to add ten seconds in this round.
14:03Which movie stars Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner?
14:06Donna.
14:06The Bodyguard.
14:07Yeah, ten seconds.
14:08Well done.
14:10Wasn't that a great film?
14:11Wasn't that a brilliant film?
14:13Okay, right.
14:13Let's have a look and see how well you've done and how far you're going to go in the sweep.
14:17Well, Diane and Donna, you have two minutes and ten seconds to spend in our market.
14:21Julie and Liz, you have two minutes and thirty.
14:23And Jim and Sharon, you have two minutes and fifty in time to go with the market later on.
14:32Which one of you is going to be running the sweep in each team?
14:34Diane, Jim and Liz.
14:36Join us in a few moments when we watch those three going wild in the aisles for the chance
14:39to win £2,000 on Supermarket Sweep.
14:44APPLAUSE
14:58Welcome back to Supermarket Sweep.
15:00Now, we've already seen our teams build up valuable minutes and seconds on their clocks.
15:04They're going to take that time to go wild in the aisles.
15:07The idea is to fill your trolley with as much stuff as you possibly can.
15:10And the one with the highest shopping total will be going for the £2,000.
15:13Now, let's have a look.
15:14Jim and Sharon, you'll be starting first with two minutes and fifty.
15:17Liz and Julie, you'll be starting next with two minutes and thirty.
15:20And Diane and Donna, you'll be going next with two minutes and ten seconds.
15:24Everything in this supermarket is yours for the taking.
15:28Grab what you will.
15:29Shop as best as you can, in other words.
15:31Also, worth remembering, I've got a shopping list.
15:33It's worth £100, but only if you bring back all three items on my list, OK?
15:38And my shopping list for today is a dog bowl, a jar of cocktail cherries, and sardines in vegetable oil.
15:45I need all three of those items for the £100 for your subtotal, OK?
15:49There are also various bonuses around, which are inflatable bonuses.
15:53Only one to a customer, but they're worth between £25 and £100 each, OK?
15:59So we're worth remembering, when your partners come back to change trolleys, shoppers and partners,
16:04keep reminding where they are, what they have to do, the shopping list especially,
16:08and don't forget those bonuses.
16:09Are you ready to go shopping?
16:10Yeah.
16:11OK.
16:12I'm going to start you off first, Jim and Sharon.
16:14If you're ready, here we go.
16:16Three, two, one.
16:18Off you go.
16:20And Jim gets away first, and he heads straight for the freezer section.
16:24What'll he choose first?
16:25Looks like the frozen veg.
16:26One, two, three to a customer.
16:29Three packs of each.
16:30Two, one.
16:30Go shopping.
16:32And Liz is hard on his heels with lots of encouragement there from the audience,
16:35but she stops on roof for one of our garden chairs.
16:38Whoop, straight in the trolley it goes.
16:40And Jim's already found the videos.
16:42Three of those, that could make a tidy sum,
16:44as Liz now hits the freezers.
16:48And look, Jim's picked up an inflatable bonus already.
16:51Here we go.
16:52Diane's away.
16:53And wait a minute, she's running without a basket.
16:55She's totally off her trolley.
16:57This could be new tactics.
16:58We haven't seen this before.
17:00But what's going on?
17:01She's looking for something.
17:02And Jim's found the beers.
17:03His basket is already filling up.
17:07And Diane's gone for a dog bowl.
17:10Of course, she's trying to get the shopping list.
17:12Now, so what's next?
17:14A tin of cherries, that's what's needed.
17:15And then one more item left to find.
17:19As Liz heads back, Jim needs a new trolley.
17:23And yes, Diane's found the third item.
17:25She's got the shopping list, and that could give her a distinct advantage.
17:29Liz piles in the nappies.
17:32And she's got a basket for the turkeys, too.
17:34As Diane comes back with an inflatable,
17:37she still hasn't picked up her trolley.
17:40Jim's on his second basket and thrown in colas.
17:43And Diane finally got her trolley there, and she's now into some serious shopping.
17:47As Liz rushes back for a second.
17:50Jim gets the nappies.
17:51He's piling them in.
17:53And Diane starts to fill that basket with ease.
17:56Beers, colas, they're all going in.
18:02Liz is in the dairy section, and she's dithering.
18:05She can't make her mind up.
18:06What is she looking for?
18:08Diane heads for the videos, but she's dropped, too.
18:11Now, she must pick those up to avoid a penalty.
18:16Jim heads back.
18:18Things are really hotting up here, getting very tense.
18:22And Liz throws in a garden chair.
18:24Her trolley's getting pretty full.
18:26Now, will she have time for another one?
18:28Diane picks up the nappies, and her basket is full as well.
18:31Now, the clock's ticking away now.
18:33I don't think she's going to have time for another trolley.
18:35And Jim remembers the shopping list.
18:37Now, he's got the sardines, but what else was on that list?
18:39Liz has found the sardines, but she's knocking cans all over the place.
18:44She's got to spend time putting those back.
18:49Diane's having trouble with the CDs, and she takes great care there.
18:52And the clock's ticking away.
18:55It's really...
18:55And wait a minute, Jim, has he got time to grab a few more items
18:58and hopefully complete his shopping list before time is up?
19:01He's just out of time.
19:05Come on back.
19:08Come on back, Liz.
