Part 6 of 9 of the Charles Dickens classic. Having heard Quilp talking to Mrs Jarley, Nell and her grandfather take to the road again and find themselves sleeping on the streets. Discovered by a furnace man he notices Nell is soaked to the skin and warns Mr Trent that she is not well, who is too concerned with escaping Quilp's pursuit to notice. Dick Swiveller seeks out Kit in the local inn with his new information about Quilp, and is nearby to overhear the mysterious gentleman talking to the Punch and Judy men, who tell them that Nell and Mr Trent were last seen working at Mrs Jarley's waxwork museum.

07:37you said.
07:38didn't I always say sir that darling child was the most interesting creature I ever see.
07:52you
07:53All right.
08:35One, she called me Father Codlin.
08:38Father Codlin, she said. You were so kind. You were so good.
08:41I thought I'd bust.
08:42Where are they now, is what I'm asking.
08:44They left you at those races, as I understand.
08:46They've been traced to that spot and lost sight of.
08:49Have you...
08:49Codlin lost them at the races.
08:50Codlin was to keep an eye on them on account of, I said, them two travellers...
08:54I don't object, she says. I don't quarrel with you.
08:57I dare say it means well.
08:58But Codlin's my father and my friend.
09:00Where are they, I says to him.
09:02He falls asleep sometimes, you know.
09:04Oh, God.
09:04I found you at last and I can't have any information from you.
09:07Stay a minute. We haven't finished yet, sir.
09:09Put a little hand in my...
09:10A man by the name of Jerry.
09:11You know Jerry, Thomas.
09:13Don't talk to me of Jerry's.
09:14How can I care a pinch of snuff for Jerry's when I think of having a darling child lost and
09:21wandering up?
09:23Father, she said to me.
09:24A man by the name of Jerry, sir, as keeps a company of dancing dogs, told me in an accidental
09:30kind of way,
09:31as he'd seen the old gentleman in a company of a waxwork.
09:34I can't be sure, sir, for I wasn't this thing.
09:37But then again, I'll swear with you.
09:40Waxwork?
09:40Seeing as they've given us a slip, I didn't take no measures on it, nor ask no questions.
09:44But I can say, if you like.
09:45If it's to be worthwhile.
09:47Not that it isn't a duty that's owing to a creature you dotes on and dotes on you.
09:53Is this man Jerry in town?
09:55No, young man.
09:55But he will be tomorrow.
09:57I know that for sure.
09:59Because he's coming to lodging our lodging house.
10:00Then bring him here at this hour tomorrow.
10:35Are you...
10:36All right.
10:38All right.
10:39I'm all right.
10:40This is my work.
10:42To watch the fire?
10:44All night long.
10:46He's my friend by now.
10:49Fire, I see.
10:51He's been alive as long as I have.
10:53We think together in the night.
10:57It's like a book to me.
11:00It's like an old story it tells me.
11:04It has its pictures too.
11:06And music.
11:08A voice all its own that I'd recognize anywhere.
11:15My memory of that fire.
11:18I used to crawl about here when I was a baby.
11:22My father looked after it then.
11:25Had you no mother?
11:26No.
11:27She were dead.
11:29I used to crawl about here when I was a baby.
11:29Women work hard in these parts.
11:32She worked herself to death, fire tells me.
11:35I suppose it's true.
11:38Were you brought up here then?
11:40Here?
11:43Summer and winter.
11:47Secretly at first, but when they found out, they let me father keep me.
11:52Fire nursed me.
11:55Always the same fire.
11:58It hasn't ever gone out.
12:01And so you're fond of it.
12:04He died in front of it.
12:07Just fell down.
12:10Just where ashes are burning now.
12:12Oh, how dreadful.
12:14How horrible.
12:15I saw him fall.
12:18Just where ashes are.
12:22I remember wondering why it worked.
12:24Fire didn't go and help him.
12:27Have you been here ever since?
12:29No.
12:32No, they took me away.
12:34Cold, dreary time that way too.
12:37But all the while, fire kept on burning.
12:42It reared and leapt when I came back.
12:45Just like it had done in our play days.
12:54You, my guests, be looking at me, what kind of a child I were.
12:58But, well, for all the difference between us, I was a child once.
13:06When I saw you up there in the street tonight, it put me in mind of my sin as I
13:10was after he died.
13:12And it wished me to bring you back to old fire.
13:20I was thinking of them old days while you were sleeping by.
13:27Just like you should be sleeping now.
13:29Come on.
13:30Lie down.
13:31You must be moving on.
13:33You're rested when we're dry.
13:39Come on, it's almost morning.
13:42Huh?
13:45Where do you go?
13:48Some distant place.
13:49Some place in the country.
13:51Far removed from towns.
13:54And people.
13:55Where we'll be happy.
14:05Well, you're far from country here.
14:08But I'll put you on road.
14:14She isn't well, you know.
14:17It's too much for you.
14:19What you're trying to do is too much.
14:21Do you understand?
14:23Yeah.
15:02Can you put us on a road that will lead us there?
15:04I know little at country.
15:06For such as I spend all our lives before finished doors and seldom go forth to breathe.
15:12But there are such places yonder.
15:14And far from here?
15:15Aye, of course.
15:16How could there be green and fresh and be near us?
15:20Road leads through miles and miles.
15:22All lighted up be fires like ours.
15:25Strange black road.
15:27And one that would frighten you at night.
15:28We are here and must go on.
15:30Rough people.
15:31Paths never made for little feet like yours.
15:35Dismal flight, please.
15:38Surely you might turn back.
15:39Oh, no.
15:41No, we can't.
15:42We can't turn back.
15:44There is no turning back.
15:46If you can direct us, do.
15:48If not, please don't try to turn us from our carpus.
15:51We're in danger.
15:53We're running away from danger.
15:55All right.
15:56Come on, then.
15:57I'll direct you as best I can.
17:21Please.
17:27Please.
17:36What is it?
17:39Charity, sir.
17:40A morsel if you could spare it.
17:43Of course.
17:49I'm sorry.
17:57You've taxed her strength too far, friend.
18:00You must travel with me, child.
18:26I believe it has.
18:27Mine did that.
18:29Oh, I've been poor too.
18:31But two days ago I was appointed clerk and schoolmaster to a village at five and thirty pounds a year.
18:39Five and thirty pounds.
18:41How nice that sounds.
18:43It is nice.
18:44And I trust that all will go well with you too.
18:48It will.
18:49I'm sure it will.
18:52It's becoming cold.
18:53We'll pull up at the next inn we come to.
18:56Get on.
18:59Oh, you must, sir.
19:00We couldn't.
19:01We haven't sufficient money.
19:02Now it's good to share one's luck.
19:05You shall be my guests.
19:13Here, my dear.
19:14Drink this.
19:16It's a teaspoonful of brandy and water.
19:18It'll make you feel better.
19:20And something light for your supper.
19:22The wing of a roasted power.
19:36You're...
19:38Well, you're not really poor people.
19:41Oh, yes, sir.
19:42As poor as you see.
19:43But you're...
19:44You're traveling to some place where...
19:46Where you'll be welcome.
19:48We're traveling.
19:48Just traveling.
19:50I hope for a place remote and pleasant in the country.
19:54But why?
19:55It's unusual.
19:57Well, I think it is.
19:58I mean for so...
19:59So young a girl and so old a gentleman.
20:02Would you not say it's unusual?
20:04We're alone.
20:05No.
20:05We had neither relations nor friends.
20:09Unless...
20:10Unless you can count Kit.
20:13Kit?
20:14The boy who worked for us.
20:17We left a long time ago the place where we lived.
20:20Or so it seems.
20:23You might like to tell us about it.
20:26It was pleasant once.
20:29We were happy in the old curiosity shop.
20:32Grandfather Kit and I.
20:34Oh, he was so happy.
20:39Then someone borrowed money from Grandfather.
20:43He borrowed from him many times and never paid the money back I think.
20:47But that is why Grandfather became poor.
20:51That's why Mr Quilp started to come to the shop.
20:56You're afraid of this Mr Quilp.
20:59He's a very strange man.
21:02Hello, my dear.
21:04I'm looking.
21:05Looking for a man.
21:07An old man and a girl.
21:08I thought he was looking for me, my dear.
21:11They've been seen in the neighborhood.
21:12Not far from here.
21:13Have you seen them?
21:14No, I haven't.
21:15I'm afraid I can't help you.
21:17Not in that way.
21:20Leave me alone, you slut.
21:22Wasting my time.
21:24You're not very polite, you miserable runt.
21:26I hope you never find them you're looking for.
21:29Oh, I will.
21:30I'll find them.
21:31I'll find them just as sure as you'll die in the gutter.
21:34And there's nothing more sure than that.
21:44It's a sad tale you tell.
21:47They'll put Grandfather in a madhouse. I know they will.
21:50Yes.
21:51Yes, so they might.
21:56And then...
21:57There's something else.
22:02He must have money.
22:04To gamble with he must have money.
22:07He cannot help himself.
22:09But I feel, you see, that...
22:11In some quiet place.
22:14That he may...
22:15He may somehow lose the urge.
22:20All the money we earn has to go on cards.
22:24Even now.
22:26Even in this very minute I'm worried about him.
22:28Well, he might be your...
22:29Your grandfather's having his supper in the kitchen.
22:32He's being looked after.
22:33And he's more, my dear girl, than you can look after by yourself.
22:37Much more.
22:39They shall come with me.
22:41Yes, you shall come with me.
22:43There'll be occupation for you both in the village I'm traveling to.
22:47She's right in what she says about him.
22:49He'll recover himself in such surroundings I've seen it happen.
22:52He's driven to gambling through concern for the child.
22:54Oh, no wonder his mind's become strange.
22:58You're a kind man, sir.
23:00Kindest we've met on all our journeys.
23:03Oh, sir, if only we could go with you.
23:06You shall go ahead by stagecoach.
23:08All day in the open in my cart.
23:10It's not the thing at all.
23:12You shall meet us at my destination.
23:14I must not be parted from him.
23:15You shall be.
23:16For a little while.
23:18He shall be my concern.
23:35You're there.
23:37I want to talk to you.
23:39What do you want?
23:40An old man and a girl I want.
23:43An old madman who owes me money.
23:45I may even know when a girl by the time I finish with him.
23:48They're not here.
23:50I didn't think they were, you fool.
23:52Have you seen them?
23:55Have you seen them, I said?
23:57I said no.
24:00They've been here, haven't they?
24:02I got on their trail two days ago.
24:03They've been seen in this town.
24:06You've seen them, haven't you?
24:09Come on now, come on.
24:10Don't play games with me.
24:14Aye.
24:19Aye, I've seen them.
24:21Well.
24:22Well.
24:24Now put them on their road.
24:26Which road?
24:27Which road?
24:29The road home.
24:31Where they came.
24:34Except a shorter way.
24:36Back to the city they walked out of.
24:39Back?
24:41You're sure they're going back?
24:43Aye.
24:45I'm sure.
25:05The good weil?
25:17Okay wellness.
