Are Eric Waddle's comments about Bryce Underwood, something or nothing?
Transcript
00:00Well, I tell you, some of these sounds of the game things,
00:03eh, double play!
00:04It's like running a little light on highlights.
00:06And the Tigers take the field!
00:08Ba-da-da-da-da-da!
00:10All right.
00:12Oh, Jesus.
00:13We're going to get back to the Tigers,
00:15and we'll get back to Miles Garrett as a Ram.
00:19I wanted to bring this up in a classic something-or-nothing format.
00:25And I want to start,
00:27because I feel like you need a PSA when you're talking about Michigan.
00:30I see both sides of this.
00:33So just breathe while I take you through this.
00:35Now, do we have the audio of this?
00:37Okay.
00:38One of the great facial hair members of the NFL Hall of Fame,
00:43Eric Weddle,
00:45was talking about Bryce Underwood.
00:48Now, why would he be doing that?
00:49Well, A, he played for Kyle Whittingham.
00:52B, he was at spring ball
00:54because his kid, I believe, is a 2028 big-time, big-time, big-time,
00:59like, five-star potential recruit.
01:03And he had comments about Bryce Underwood.
01:06So here's, I'll play this,
01:08but here's what you don't get to do.
01:10All your Kremlin talking points don't play.
01:13Okay.
01:14Now, you have one trump card that does,
01:16and I support you playing it.
01:18You don't get to say,
01:20well, he's a hater, he's a Buckeye, or a Spartan.
01:23You don't get to do that.
01:24You don't get to say some kind of conspiracy.
01:27He doesn't want Underwood there,
01:29so his kid can,
01:30his kid's a 2028 recruit.
01:32They don't even play the same position.
01:35And, newsflash,
01:36you don't get to say he hates your coach.
01:41He's friends with Whittingham.
01:42He played for Whittingham.
01:44And, frankly,
01:45you kind of wonder if Whittingham had a little intel for him here.
01:48Now, the trump card you get to play is,
01:51none of this matters,
01:53because I'm not willing to write a kid off after one year.
01:56I told you I thought he sucked.
01:58And he did.
01:59And I told you my concerns about the program he comes from.
02:02Hey, coming up next,
02:04here's all the great football players Belleville's produced.
02:08It's just basically five-star bust university.
02:12But, here's what he said about Underwood,
02:15and then we're going to unpack this,
02:16and Rico needs to come to the front of the classroom.
02:18This is your wheelhouse.
02:20Here's Eric Weddle on Bryce Underwood.
02:41How do you really feel, Eric?
02:45Holy hell.
02:46Take me through this.
02:48Well, Mike,
02:49for those who watched the Michigan spring game,
02:51it wasn't his best game ever.
02:54I think he finished with some ridiculous low numbers for stats,
02:58but it was a spring ball.
02:59So, you know,
03:01I've learned over the years,
03:02you don't invest a lot in spring ball,
03:04because everybody looks great,
03:06or they look horrible.
03:08But the fact that Carr came in
03:10and actually moved the ball,
03:12scored, did a lot of stuff,
03:13this is Tommy Carr.
03:15Tommy Carr, right.
03:16CJ's still at Notre Dame, right?
03:17He hasn't transferred in the last 10 minutes?
03:19No, he has not.
03:19Okay.
03:20It was enough to raise an eyebrow.
03:22I remember I did a,
03:23can we say that,
03:24you know,
03:24right after the spring game,
03:25and I think Davis shot me down,
03:27was like,
03:28no, no, no, no, no, no.
03:28But as things progress,
03:31I don't think that everybody's 100% saying behind him,
03:37like,
03:37well,
03:37he didn't have a quarterbacks coach,
03:39so now they went out and got him a quarterbacks coach.
03:41I don't think that that's that far off from being true,
03:46because this is,
03:48as you say,
03:48this is somebody totally unbiased,
03:50who watched and saw,
03:52and saw what I think everybody else saw,
03:55where against non-directional schools last year,
03:59he wasn't that good.
04:00Now,
04:00you were hoping that he would take that next leap forward,
04:04but I don't think that it's a given.
04:07And as we know,
04:08my quarterbacks don't stick around with the same schools
04:10they get recruited to anyway.
04:12They all end up leaving.
04:13So,
04:14here's the one thing I want to say,
04:16and I'll just put it on Main Street.
04:18I think it's insane to write a kid off after one year.
04:21I also thought it was insane they even played him last year.
04:24Okay?
04:26He will write his own story this year,
04:28and the problem is the following.
04:31We're not going to be able to make real evaluations
04:33when you're playing Western,
04:35UTEP,
04:36you know,
04:36last chance you.
04:38Now,
04:38they've got the game against Oklahoma.
04:41How he plays there,
04:42maybe the Iowa game.
04:43They don't even leave home,
04:44I think,
04:44for the first five weeks.
04:47I'm willing to let him write his own story.
04:49It's what I said last year.
04:50I mocked all the people.
04:52They sat there and,
04:53you know,
04:53pleasured their beanbag
04:54because of what he did to Central Michigan.
04:57The reality is he stinks.
05:00Now,
05:01lots of freshmen stink.
05:02We talked about this.
05:04He could be the best player in America this year.
05:06You know who stunk as a freshman?
05:08Dante Moore.
05:09And Dante Moore took essentially
05:11a development year.
05:13He did the Doug Karshum studying abroad
05:15and tasting wine in Australia.
05:16He didn't play in year two.
05:19He came back last year
05:20and Dante was really good.
05:22I afford Bryce the same opportunity.
05:25The one thing that does strike me,
05:27why would Eric Weddle say this
05:29knowing his connection to Whittingham,
05:32knowing he wants his kid,
05:33you know,
05:33his kid might go to U of M.
05:35That just feels weird to me.
05:37And that's just it.
05:38To me,
05:39it feels like I can't say this,
05:41but you can.
05:42If I say this,
05:44it's controversial.
05:44If you say it,
05:46well,
05:46it's just some guy
05:47who happened to see something
05:49and it's his opinion.
05:51He's not the only person
05:52that I've heard this from,
05:53from other people who cover Michigan.
05:56It's a lot of people saying,
05:58I don't know.
05:59And I think a lot of it
06:00comes from the fact
06:02that we were told,
06:03not everybody,
06:04but Mike,
06:04we were told how special this kid was.
06:07And oh my goodness.
06:08You just,
06:09it was almost like he was getting
06:10the Ron Polish treatment.
06:12He was going to win multiple Heisman.
06:14Dude,
06:14you know what that is.
06:15That's from all the ball washers
06:17that write for these schools.
06:19All these people that are bought.
06:21Like they're ever going to give you
06:22an honest word.
06:23Their business model depends
06:24on fluffing your audience.
06:26Oh,
06:26this is the greatest class ever.
06:28And then when it's not,
06:29you just the next year,
06:30huge recruiting year.
06:32Like you can sell hope
06:34and continue them.
06:35It's not hard,
06:36but I'm sorry.
06:37I'm not listening to any
06:39college football media
06:40when you're writing for a site
06:42called Wolverine Boner Net.
06:44Like you've lost the ability
06:47to have credibility.
06:48Yes.
06:49But the fact that
06:51there seems to be
06:52not a full on fire,
06:54but some smoke that
06:56I think a lot of people
06:57are looking at this
06:58as a kid.
07:00You got Oklahoma.
07:00You better come out here
07:02and dazzle us
07:03and blow our socks off.
07:05We need to see something
07:07or we're going to go
07:09in a different direction.
07:10David,
07:11you're looking again.
07:12I'm not overreacting to it.
07:14I think it's odd
07:15for Weddle
07:16to speak that authoritatively.
07:19I mean,
07:19I respect,
07:20look,
07:20I was an all pro safety,
07:21a Super Bowl champion,
07:23and he knows quarterback play.
07:24And later in that podcast,
07:26he did talk about
07:27part of the rationale
07:28is like,
07:30you need to be able
07:31to navigate the pocket.
07:32You need to have a feel
07:34for the position.
07:35And he believes
07:36that this kid doesn't
07:37have any of that.
07:37Look,
07:38it's bizarre to me.
07:39All right.
07:39But I'm not going to turn
07:40this into something
07:41where all of a sudden
07:42it's going to shape
07:42my opinion about Bryce
07:44Underwood.
07:44the play on the field will.
07:46But here's the thing,
07:47David,
07:47real quick,
07:48Mike,
07:49in order for that to happen,
07:51maybe the same thing
07:52that happened to Dante Moore
07:53will have,
07:53you got to go someplace else
07:54because I don't think
07:56you can't take a gap year
07:58at Michigan.
07:59We're paying you
08:00all of this money,
08:01son.
08:01You have to play
08:02right now.
08:03Here's the other thing.
08:04And again,
08:05I don't really want
08:06to go down the road
08:07with this because,
08:08again,
08:09his play will determine it.
08:12I hated his freshman year.
08:13I think he's terrible.
08:14But what did I say
08:16about all freshmen?
08:17When you play
08:17a true freshman QB,
08:19you are likely terrible.
08:20But here's the one thing.
08:23Western,
08:25Oklahoma,
08:26UTEP,
08:27Iowa,
08:28then
08:29at Minnesota,
08:30week off,
08:31Penn State,
08:31Indiana.
08:33I mean,
08:34I got a hard time
08:36believing after two weeks
08:37they're going to sit him.
08:38Now,
08:38if he looks like crap
08:39in the first two weeks,
08:40maybe.
08:40My point is,
08:41Kyle Whittingham's a new coach.
08:43He has no loyalty
08:44to this kid.
08:46Oh,
08:46but what about the boosters?
08:47I don't know.
08:48It was some,
08:49it was Larry Ellison's wife,
08:51allegedly,
08:52who paid for this kid.
08:54And is Ellison anywhere?
08:56Plus,
08:56Michigan's got limitless NIL.
08:59Didn't they just become
08:59crypto kings
09:00or whatever it is?
09:01Yeah,
09:01they did some investment stuff.
09:03So,
09:04like,
09:04if I'm Whittingham,
09:05I'm playing the guys I want.
09:06Why the hell did I take this job?
09:09That's a YP,
09:10not an MP.
09:11And that's why I think
09:12you're starting to see
09:13a little bit of smoke
09:14coming out
09:15to kind of tell people
09:16if we make the change,
09:17it won't be all of a sudden.
09:19You won't be shocked.
09:20All right,
09:21listen,
09:22I'm going to take a page
09:23out of John Jansen's book.
09:25We're going to let it play out
09:26a little bit.
09:27Hell no.
09:28I'm saying,
09:29I just,
09:30I got to let his play speak.
09:32But I thought it was weird,
09:33wanted to play for the people.
09:34We'll knock down a few calls
09:35about it if you like.
09:37Ooh,
09:37Sparty!
09:37I didn't say nothing.
09:39No.
09:40I'm just shooting you straight.
09:4197-1.
09:4297-1.
