00:00I'd like to state that no braineese or insects were harmed in the making of this program,
00:03and that none of the training you're about to see be attempted unless under expert supervision.
00:09Eight braineese, one challenge.
00:11To use complex mass of 100 billion cells we call Brain for chance to win Brain-Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
00:19This is Brain-Jitsu.
00:27Born in Lancashire, trained in Japan, with mind as sharp as samurai sword.
00:33He is Brain Master. He is the Sensei.
00:37Konnichiwa, and welcome to Brain-Jitsu.
00:42Mental training specially designed to boost brain power and focus.
00:47My trainees, or braineese, have been following a basic program of training in the comfort of their own home.
00:53A brain-boosting routine of exercise, sleep, and enough fruit and veg to stock a greengrocer's.
01:02I'm secretly quite confident, because the training was quite easy, so I think I'm going to win.
01:06I'm really good at netball, so I think it'll help me with the tasks that I do.
01:10Now my braineese must put their training into practice.
01:13By testing a part of their brain we use every day.
01:15Level one.
01:18No, no, no, no!
01:19Take a look at this tin of Brain-Jitsu beans.
01:23Now, try to find it amongst all the other tins.
01:28Spotted, eh?
01:29Congratulations!
01:31You've just used your occipital lobes.
01:33This area, the same part of our brain, allows us to recognise and separate images from each other.
01:41The seven braineese who use their occipital lobes the best will be allowed to enter my Brain-Jitsu Dojo, where
01:47their training will continue.
01:48The one who fails will be left outside.
01:52Oh!
01:53Feel the burn.
01:53Enter the Dojo!
01:58Braineese must answer four questions by counting the different coloured shapes on the board in front of them.
02:04Get them right and they'll be left with a four-digit code, which they must then use to unlock a
02:09piece of brain and secure their place in the Dojo.
02:11But with only seven pieces of brain and eight braineese, one of either Cameron, Anisha, Lawrence, Herminda, Robert, Bethany, James
02:21or Emma will be left outside and eliminated.
02:27As the four questions are revealed, our braineese are more nervous than a sumo at his weekly diet club weigh
02:33-in.
02:34How many small black circles are there?
02:39How many blue squares are there?
02:45How many squares are there?
02:52How many green shapes are there?
02:57The answer our braineese are looking for is two, one, four, five.
03:06Cameron's first up, but has he got the right code?
03:09A few more braineese follow suit, but brainy Bethany has already got the right code and claimed her place in
03:15the Dojo.
03:18Don't forget the code our braineese are looking for is two, one, four, five,
03:22as there are two small black circles, one blue square, four squares and five green shapes.
03:33James takes second place with Lawrence coming third and Cameron claims that fourth place in the Dojo.
03:40As Robert gets the code and that fifth piece of brain, Emma is looking distracted.
03:46The key to this task is to stay calm and really focus on getting the answers right.
03:51Don't rush and don't be put off by the others around you.
03:55Anisha runs to the yellow piece of brain just as Paminda cracks the code and gets the blue,
04:01leaving just Emma and Anisha to battle it out for the last place in the Dojo.
04:06Emma and Anisha both are opposite ends of the noodle bar.
04:09They must stay calm and focus only on working out the answer.
04:14Emma looks like she's been inspired and it's truly a Eureka moment because she's got the code right.
04:21So Emma's in and Anisha is out.
04:28As Seven enter the Dojo for a chance to survive six more gruelling levels of brain training,
04:33for Anisha, the dream of the black brain belt has ended before it even started.
04:37I feel upset and a bit disappointed, but overall it was a fun task to do.
04:42I think the person who might have a chance in winning is either Lawrence or Bethany.
04:49So, with six levels to go, only Bethany, James, Lawrence, Cameron, Robert, Paminda and Emma
04:56have entered the Dojo and achieved the first of their coloured brain belts.
05:02I'm really glad about being first.
05:04My strength is a concentration task because I can stay concentrated quite well.
05:08Maths is one of my stronger points at school, so hopefully there's more of them to come.
05:14When it was just us two battling, like, I started to get really nervous.
05:22In this next level of training, things are going to get really hard.
05:28Level two.
05:29Orange belt.
05:31We do things every day without even thinking, like eating with a knife and fork.
05:38Now, try swapping them over, whoa, and see how you get on.
05:42I prefer chopsticks, mate.
05:45If you manage to do that, you're using part of your brain that deals with problem solving,
05:50the frontal lobes.
05:51And that's what level two is all about.
05:55Taking something you normally do without thinking and doing it differently.
05:59Work it.
06:00To prepare them for using their frontal lobes in the next challenge, my braineys are going to need some training.
06:07Room of Mental Nourishment.
06:10The Room of Mental Nourishment is where our young hopefuls will train their brains to help them progress to the
06:15next levels of the dojo.
06:17The more seriously they take their training, the better chance they'll have of rising to the challenges that lie ahead.
06:23And in level two, that challenge is all about getting their brains to think in a new way.
06:28Brain training.
06:29Take it in turns to call out the action on your cards.
06:56This training makes our braineys work their frontal lobes as they have to really think about something.
07:02they would normally do without thinking at all.
07:06Get down!
07:09So that's Brainy Bethany out.
07:12Touch left shoulder.
07:15Hey, you're waiting!
07:17Get down!
07:19Waiting is cheating, Cheeky Cameron.
07:21Spin around clockwise.
07:24Lauren!
07:26And Lauren spun clockwise when he should have spun anti-clockwise.
07:31With three braineys down, it's time for a training tip.
07:34Tip.
07:35Don't rush.
07:36Pause for two seconds to think before you react.
07:39If you want to work your frontal lobes at home, why not try this exercise with your mates or your
07:43brothers and sisters?
07:44It's great fun and it'll help improve your all-round focus.
07:49Wrong knee up means you must sit down, Robert.
07:52Rub stomach clockwise.
07:56Laurence!
07:59Again, Laurence, and with the same mistake, here's a little lesson just for you.
08:05Clockwise.
08:07Anti-clockwise.
08:08Get it?
08:09Now that's been cleared up, what did our braineys think of the training?
08:12The tip of waiting a couple of seconds was helpful because for things like anti-clockwise and clockwise, you had
08:19to make sure you did it the right way.
08:21Based on the training, I think Laurence will be eliminated.
08:25It's the practice, not the real thing.
08:28I'll prove you wrong in the real thing.
08:30Cameron and Laurence both struggled in the training, but will Laurence prove cheeky Cameron wrong and make it through the
08:36next level?
08:36Or will Cameron's prediction come true?
08:38And can Brainy Bethany make it two wins in a row?
08:43There's only one way to find out, as our seven now put their frontal lobe train into the test.
08:48Guardian of the dojo and task-adjudicator the Sheehan will now demonstrate the level two challenge.
08:54Confusing colour challenge.
08:59Brainy's will take turn to stand in middle of confusing colour challenge map.
09:03Sheehan then flip through 15 cards.
09:06On each card is name of colour.
09:08Ignoring actual word and focusing only on colour that word is written in,
09:13Brainy's must then jump with both feet onto marching circle.
09:17So, if see this, must jump on blue.
09:21Brainy will need to be on board, because Sheehan will be turning over cards at fair old lick.
09:28Player with least number of correct colour matches will be eliminated.
09:34My Brainy tip for this task is to focus the mind on just one letter, and not the whole word.
09:40What's important here is not the word, but the colour that it's written in.
09:49Looking calm, our level one winner, Brainy Bethany, takes to the mat.
09:56Bethany may be heavy in brain power, but she's light on her feet.
09:59The pace is fast, but she's keeping up no problem and no mistakes so far.
10:04Don't forget that our Brainy's have to see the colour, not the word, so that's red.
10:11And that's yellow.
10:14Bethany has clearly remembered her training.
10:17That was a near perfect round, and fast too.
10:22Oh, that should have been orange, James.
10:24And that was blue.
10:31James did well in the training, and it looks like he's remembered the tip, because now he's on a roll.
10:40A few penalties there, but he did pretty well.
10:46Lawrence struggled with his clockwise and anti-clockwise in the training, but he seems to be having no problems making
10:51his way round this coloured dial.
11:00Cameron picked out Lawrence as the loser for this level.
11:03Lawrence said he'd prove him wrong, and it looks like he has, because that was an excellent run.
11:08Can Cameron hold his own?
11:14Cheeky Cameron struggled a little in the training, and he's struggling here too.
11:21He's finished, but has he beat his rival, Lawrence?
11:27Robert makes a few mistakes, but also makes up a few of his own special dance moves along the way.
11:34Paminda gets a near perfect score.
11:40And Emma also does well.
11:45But as the gong sounds for the last time, which of our brainees are going home?
11:52Perfect Paminda came in first place with 15 matches.
11:57Bethany, Emma and Lawrence came joint second with 14 colour matches.
12:01What will Cameron say to that, eh, Lawrence?
12:04Robert came third with 13 colour matches.
12:07But with 12 colour matches, it's James and Cameron who are joint fourth,
12:11and have to battle it out for the last orange brain belt in the...
12:14Tiebreak Chopstick Challenge!
12:22It's tough but fair.
12:23Our brainees have just five seconds to engage their occipital lobes,
12:27the seeing part of their brain,
12:28and quickly work out how many chopsticks they think they see.
12:32Time to reveal our brainees' answers.
12:3450.
12:3732.
12:38The actual number is...
12:40Ho-ho!
12:42So, Cameron's answer of 32 was furthest from the correct number of 82 chopsticks.
12:48But he's still got a cheeky smile as he leaves the dojo for good.
12:54Walk of eternal regret.
12:58That task required concentration and mental and physical ability,
13:02but I just kind of lost my concentration and I weren't up for the task.
13:07I think Lawrence might win because he got a pretty high score in that game.
13:12So with five levels to go, Bethany, James, Lawrence, Robert, Paminda and Emma have won their orange.
13:20When the tiebreak happened, I was really nervous and I was just trying to get through so then I could
13:25move on to the next round.
13:27I'm so happy I got first place in this round because in the last round I didn't do very well,
13:31but I've sharpened up now.
13:42Who's the clever clogs and whose brain needs a lot more training?
13:45It's the 1870s and a geezer called Alexander Graham Bell goes in a fancy old dog and bone or telephone
13:51so you and I can gossip, gasp and natter to people all over the world.
13:56Telephone-tastic!
13:57Hello?
13:58Mum, I'm on the telly.
13:59I'll call you back.
14:00Where was I?
14:00Oh yeah, phones.
14:02Off to Finland.
14:03Every year, a load of Finns and folks from all over the world take part in the Mobile Phone Throwing
14:08World Championships.
14:09Why?
14:09Well, to see how far they can throw them, of course.
14:11Right, got to ring the old dear back.
14:13Brainy Alexander Graham Bell.
14:15Not Sir Brainy Phone Flingers in Finland.
14:19Brain Jitsu!
14:23Pressure in Brain Jitsu Dojo rising.
14:26Now just six young hopeful remains to compete under watchful eye of Sheehan.
14:31Brainy Bethany, first to enter Dojo.
14:35Sims!
14:36When the tiebreak happened I was really nervous and I was just trying to get through
14:40so then I could move on to the next round.
14:43Robot placed midway both rounds.
14:46Emma nearly went out in first round but confidence improved and came second in Confusing Colour Challenge.
14:53Coming seconds, like, giving me more confidence.
14:56Lawrence, whose rivalry with Cameron ended when he is knocked out in last round and perfect Paminda.
15:03I'm so happy I got first place in this round because in the last round I didn't do very well
15:08but I've sharpened up now.
15:38Challenge is about to get even tougher.
15:39He exercises both halves of the brain.
15:42Allow me to explain.
15:44Think of it like a policeman guiding traffic.
15:48While the drivers are focused on their own individual journeys, the policeman, he has to control all the cars and
15:55where they're going.
15:55It's the same with the brain.
15:57There's the left half which deals with the details and there's the right half which looks at the overall picture.
16:04This next level of training strengthens my brainy's focus by working one half of their brain under pressure.
16:18It's our second visit to the room of mental nourishment.
16:21Brainy's have a choice as to whether they take part or not but any extra training they do will help
16:26them with the next challenge.
16:29For level three, it's communication training.
16:32Brain training.
16:34Each pin a body part onto the sumo wrestler.
16:36Another brainy must direct the blindfolded brainy using only three instructions.
16:42So brainy Bethany gives James a spin before instructing him where to stick the sumo's teeth.
16:47Go forward.
16:49The guider is using the right side of their brain to give instructions and the blindfolded brainy is using the
16:55left side of their brain to listen and interpret those instructions.
17:03You've made a bit of a boob there, Bethany.
17:06Step forward, one big step.
17:09Reach up.
17:12Push forward and stick.
17:13Confident Emma's clear instructions have paid off.
17:18Perminda hasn't done too well as the guider.
17:20Will Lawrence fare better?
17:22Step forward.
17:24Pull it down a bit.
17:27Pull it to the right and stick.
17:30Stick.
17:31Not bad, but wait.
17:33The group think there's something afoot.
17:35That was four instructions.
17:37That looks stupid.
17:39Oh, training tip time.
17:42Tip.
17:44Use short, clear instructions.
17:46Imagine yourself hearing them.
17:48Try it.
17:53Take a step forward.
17:58Down a teeny bit.
18:01Stick.
18:04Robert did well there.
18:06He really thought before he spoke and it paid off.
18:08Very good instructions.
18:12Take one big step forward.
18:15Move it up a bit.
18:18That sumo's body parts are more of a pickle than Japanese gherkins.
18:22But how did our brainies think they did?
18:25I think it was slightly best thought that I went wrong.
18:29Well, I tried to get it near to it, but since you're facing a diagonal, I had to use up
18:33one
18:33of the moves, so, yeah, I'm sorry about that.
18:36I think we did probably the best because you followed my instructions really well and you're
18:43at a good angle to start with.
18:45For the task, I'm hoping to go with Lawrence because we did do really well in that.
18:50So, Lawrence and Robert made a good team, but will they be together in the next challenge?
18:55James blamed Beth for the teeth on pecs incident.
18:58Can she do better at the real thing?
19:01And will confident Emma remember her training and do well in the dojo?
19:05Time to find out as our six now put their communication training to the test.
19:13Hands through number two.
19:15This level tests how well our brainies can communicate, so, our six need to be in teams
19:20of two.
19:21The chopsticks will decide the pairs.
19:26So, there's Emma and James, Lawrence and Paminda, and Robert and Bethany.
19:31But who'll use their training the best to get the green?
19:36Quickly as possible, teams must punch six bucket containing number that go to make some.
19:43Pairs must decide who is guider, who is puncher.
19:47Puncher is blindfolded and relying on guider to help find bucket.
19:51When all six bucket punched, brainies stop clock by shouting, brain jitsu.
19:58Quicker they punch bucket, more time they have to pick up number and make some.
20:04When brainies happy with answer, hit the gong.
20:07First two team to work out correct answer, get green belt and advance to next level.
20:13One brainies from losing team will be eliminated.
20:17The key to success here is for the guider to use the right side of their brain to follow
20:22their team mates' progress and give them clear instructions.
20:26For their partner, it's vital they use the left side of their brain to focus on these instructions
20:33and nothing else.
20:36Step forward.
20:38First to put their communication training to the test are Emma and James.
20:43Punch.
20:44Step forward.
20:46Confident Emma did well as the guider in the training and she's doing well here too.
20:51Take a tiny step forward.
20:53Punch.
20:54The right, talking side of Emma's brain is working well as her instructions are very clear
21:00and precise.
21:01Punch.
21:02Turn your body half a circle.
21:06Take a tiny step left.
21:08Punch.
21:10Step forward.
21:11Punch.
21:13Brain jitsu.
21:15They've finished with a time of 1.57.
21:18Now Lawrence and perfect for Minda.
21:22Take a step forward.
21:24Lawrence listened well when he was paired with Robert and he seems to be using the left side
21:28of his brain effectively here too, as they're storming through the first barrels.
21:33Take a tiny step left.
21:35Punch.
21:37Take a step left.
21:39Punch.
21:42Forwards.
21:43Punch.
21:46Perfect for Minda is staying calm.
21:48Her instructions are as clear as a cloudless Tokyo sky.
21:53Punch.
21:54A little bit more left.
21:57Punch.
21:58Brain jitsu.
22:00They're finished and with a time of 1 minute 18 seconds, they're in the lead so far.
22:05Now Robert and Brainy Bethany.
22:07Normal step forward.
22:09Punch.
22:09Robert did very well as the guide during the training and his clear commands are paying off
22:13here too.
22:14Punch.
22:16Bit to the left.
22:17Beth wasn't great at giving instructions, but the listening left side of her brain seems
22:21to be working better as they're racing through the barrels.
22:24Bit to the left.
22:24Punch.
22:26Forward.
22:27Punch.
22:29Teeny bit forward.
22:31Punch.
22:32Brain jitsu.
22:33They've finished already, and with a fantastic 48 seconds, they are first to collect their
22:38numbers.
22:47Here are the numbers our brainers are looking for.
22:50See if you can work out the sum.
22:52Punch.
22:54Punch.
22:56Punch.
22:57Punch.
22:57Punch.
22:58Punch.
22:58Punch.
22:59Punch.
23:00Punch.
23:01Punch.
23:02Punch.
23:03Punch.
23:03Don't estae off.
23:04M and James have finished too, but Robert and Bethany are really struggling with the
23:08answer.
23:08They were first to get the numbers, but they've only just gonged.
23:125 times 2 plus 20 equals 30.
23:15Correct, but as the other teams have got their sums right and in a faster time,
23:20Robert and Bethany must go face to face in the...
23:23Stare off!
23:27With just one green belt up for gramps,
23:29both brainies must use all their powers of focus to fight the urge to blink.
23:33The first to falter will be eliminated.
23:43This is one of the longest stare-offs brain jitsu has ever seen.
23:50Oh, the blink was as clear as the look of disappointment on Robert's face.
23:54He's gutted, because Beth's in and Robert is out.
24:00Walk of eternal regret.
24:04It went wrong because there were six buckets and we hit them all really quick,
24:08but we thought there'd be six numbers,
24:10so we were searching around for most of the time trying to find six rather than five.
24:15Never mind.
24:17I think Emma might win the black belt because she's been the strong contester all the way through.
24:24So with four levels left, it's green brain belts for Bethany, James, Lawrence, Paminda and Emma.
24:33I think it was very good to be with Paminda because she gave me clear instructions to exactly what to
24:39do.
24:40I was kind of nervous about the stare-off because I heard that Robert practices with his brother at home.
24:44I was quite lucky that he'd blinked.
24:57This fourth level requires our brainies to master a primitive part of the brain called the amygdala,
25:03the area that responds to threat.
25:10Remember the last time you felt afraid or panicky?
25:13Perhaps you're on a ghost train at a fairground.
25:15Well, that feeling was triggered by the old amygdala.
25:20Stress can make you lose focus.
25:23Fact.
25:24Which is why my brainies must train to keep their emotions under control.
25:35We're back in the room of mental nourishment
25:37and it's time for our five green belt holders to focus on overcoming their fear.
25:43Brain training.
25:44Form a circle.
25:45Pass a disgusting drink around the circle.
25:48Only passing it on when you have said a different word ending in the letter D.
25:54After one minute, the brainy holding the drink has to drink it.
25:59I'll go first.
26:01Today's disgusting drink, vintage cod liver oil, me favourite.
26:07Sand.
26:09Succeed.
26:12And world.
26:20Lawrence, try and override your amygdala.
26:23Focus on the word, not the cod liver oil.
26:25Round.
26:28Pound.
26:31Pounded.
26:33No, that's too similar.
26:35What?
26:36This is too similar.
26:38Isn't it?
26:39No.
26:40Let's have a vote.
26:41Um, okay.
26:45That was technically him.
26:47The gong means a minute is up, but Bethany isn't happy.
26:50Didn't I say a word?
26:51Then you said something similar as well.
26:53You added ED to mine.
26:54Oi, brainy, stop arguing and just drink it.
26:57Drink it.
26:58Drink it.
27:00That's going to be disgusting.
27:04It's actually not that bad.
27:06Right, training tip time.
27:09Tip.
27:10Don't fear the drink.
27:11Welcome it as your friend.
27:13I'll start the game.
27:15Stabbed.
27:17Hesitated.
27:24Lawrence, think of the tip.
27:26If you fear the drink, it'll cloud your focus.
27:28If you focus only on the word, you'll forget about the drink and you won't have to drink it.
27:34Lawrence can't even take his eyes off it.
27:36United.
27:38Mud.
27:39If you practice this technique at home, it'll allow you to keep your emotions under control,
27:44stop you from panicking and help you focus better in situations like exams.
27:50It seemed inevitable, Lawrence.
27:52Now, bottoms up.
27:54You've got to drink it now.
27:58Yeah, I didn't ignore that.
27:59It's not funny.
28:01Oh, no.
28:03It's not that bad.
28:04Bethany took it like a man, Lawrence.
28:06Don't be shown up by a girl.
28:07Have a biscuit.
28:11The first time I paused, I meant it because I knew if I'd done it long enough, then it
28:16wouldn't have come to me.
28:17But I don't think I'd done it long enough.
28:19And the second time, I just got lost.
28:22But then as soon as I drank it, I realised that I had one.
28:25Cod.
28:28Yeah, I'm quite glad that Lawrence had to drink in the end because she sort of got what
28:32he deserved because my word was a real word.
28:35So, Beth and Lawrence had to drink.
28:37Beth said it helped to get over her fear.
28:39Can she use the training for the next challenge?
28:42Lawrence said he was pausing on purpose, but it backfired.
28:45But is he trying to save face?
28:47And how will all her brainies react when they see the Creepy Crawlies in the next fear-filled
28:52challenge?
29:00This level will test of mind over matter for brainies and will push them to really overcome
29:06their fear.
29:07Underneath the Creepy Crawlies lie an assortment of letters worth different points.
29:11Brainies have just one minute to plunge hands into tank and pick out up to seven letters each.
29:17They then have a further minute to make higher scoring words they can.
29:23To do well, my brainies must block out the signals coming from their amygdala and ignore
29:29the Creepy Crawlies.
29:31The quicker they combat their fear, the more time they'll have to pick out the high scoring
29:35letters.
29:38Brainies should dig deep because underneath that pile of mealworms are an extra five golden
29:43letters.
29:43If they manage to use one in their word, they'll double their score.
29:51Lawrence and Bethany both had to drink in the training, but all five of our brainies are
29:55getting stuck in.
30:05They all seem very calm, and they're all overriding their amygdala as well.
30:09The mealworms may as well not be there.
30:18The minute's up. Our brainies now have a further minute to make the highest scoring
30:22word they can from their letters.
30:30See if you can make a word from the anagram that's on the screen now.
30:40So, how have our green belt holders fared?
30:44Pies.
30:46Six points for Brainy Bethany.
30:50Like.
30:52Like in your style, James. Eight points.
30:56Sol.
30:57A good word, but just four points for Lawrence.
31:02Bait.
31:04That golden letter gives Perfect Paminda an excellent ten points.
31:08Lawrence's place in the dojo all hangs on Emma's score.
31:12Pay.
31:13Eight points puts pay to Lawrence's dream of the black belt.
31:17It's three wins in a row for Perfect Paminda, but Emma is in and Lawrence is out.
31:26Walk of Eternal Regret.
31:30I'm gutted to be out of brain jitsu, but I'm very pleased to get as far as I have done,
31:34because all the competitors are very hard to beat.
31:36I think James is going to win, because he's very quick with his mind.
31:44So, with only three levels to go, Bethany, James, Paminda and Emma proudly wear their blue brain belts.
31:52I think the training helped me a lot, because it made me less scared of things I didn't like,
31:57and I managed to get a good word with lots of points.
32:00I'm so relieved to be three, because now I'm in the last four,
32:03and that's pasture my goal was to get, so I'm really proud of myself.
32:08Brain ditto.
32:11Brainy, not so brainy.
32:15Who's the clever clogs, and whose brain needs a lot more training?
32:19Mount Everest.
32:20What a beauty.
32:21Now, these two geezers, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, was the first to climb it.
32:27In the ultimate test of Mind Over Matter, not only did they conquer a blooming great mountain,
32:31but they also had to battle against snow, ice, and temperatures that would freeze your permals off.
32:36Mount-tastic.
32:37Now, take a look at this line.
32:39They don't climb steep slopes, they prefer to roll down them.
32:42And for what?
32:43A blooming bit of cheese, that's what.
32:45E-damn, that's gowder hurt.
32:47Brainy, Hillary and Tenzing.
32:49Not so brainy, cheese rolling chumps.
32:53Brainy, Jitsu.
32:56Brainy, Jitsu.
33:09Brainy, Jitsu.
33:11Slowly and steadily making it to top.
33:14Perfect Paminda, who wins three challenges in row.
33:18And confidence, Emma.
33:20Only two brainy will make final test.
33:23Table of supreme focus.
33:24Where?
33:25Must move ball with power of mind.
33:28Brain Jitsu.
33:29Black brain belt is within their grasp.
33:35If you're learning how to Morris dance, then you might be interested to know that your new hobby is doing
33:41wonders for your old grey matter.
33:45Exercising both the thinking part of the brain, the cerebrum, and the doing part, the cerebellum.
33:51You see, doing new things increases the flow of blood into your head, which keeps your brain cells topped up
33:58with the oxygen they need to perform at their best.
34:01So, in level five, my brainy's are going to be challenged to learn new skills.
34:06Now, you can speed up how quickly the brain takes in new stuff.
34:11And this is what our brainy's are going to train for now.
34:15Room of Mental Nourishment.
34:19It's our brainy's fourth visit to the Room of Mental Nourishment.
34:23And for this training exercise, they're going to be really working their brains by learning something new.
34:28Brain training.
34:29Spin the drumstick between your fingers for as long as possible.
34:34This training flexes both the doing and the thinking part of the brain.
34:38Our brainy's need mental concentration to master a physical skill.
34:42Hey guys, it's quite hard, but you get the hang of it after a while.
34:47Er, Paminda, you're not really doing it properly.
34:50It's annoying when you keep dropping it, but it's okay after a while.
34:54Don't get annoyed, Paminda.
34:55Getting frustrated will only make it harder.
34:58It's quite easy once you've got the hang of it.
35:00It's harder to get faster.
35:02I think James might think I'm throwing mine at his.
35:06Because it seems to keep on ending up over there.
35:09To stop confident Emma throwing her stick James' way, here's a training tip.
35:15Tip, be confident in yourself.
35:18Look into the mirror and tell yourself you can do it.
35:21I'm great.
35:22I'm fantastic.
35:24I'm going to win the next task.
35:25I just know I am.
35:26I can do this if I stay confident and concentrate.
35:30All I've got to do is try my best and concentrate and get through the next task.
35:35Come on girl, let's do it.
35:37I can't do better than that.
35:39Obviously you can't.
35:40I'm the best.
35:41Boosting your confidence really can help if you're learning something new.
35:45If you stay positive, tell yourself you can do it, you're much more likely to succeed at your new skill.
35:50My confidence wasn't that good before, but now I've run a few tasks, I think my confidence has really grown
35:56and this training has helped me a lot.
35:59I think the girls are getting too overconfident and it's good to be confident in yourself, but when you get
36:05too confident you just stop trying.
36:08I don't stop trying because I'm not that sort of girl.
36:11You shouldn't think that about me James.
36:15So, modest James thinks the girls are overconfident.
36:18Will he be proved right or will perfect Paminda make it four wins in a row and eliminate James to
36:24leave one of the girls to take the black?
36:28Only time will tell as our four now put their skills training to the test.
36:34Speedy trick is teary.
36:38To win red belt, Brainy must use confidence training to help learn new skills.
36:43Racing against Glock, they must steer car around obstacle course.
36:48But this brings it to, so controls in reverse.
36:53To go right, must steer left, and to go forward, must steer backward.
36:57With time penalty lurking along course, Brainy's will need to remember training.
37:02Stay positive and get hang of tricky controls as quickly as possible.
37:08The tip for my Brainy's in this next task is to remain calm and think positive thoughts.
37:16Giving in to frustration will only lessen their focus and slow them up.
37:23Brainy Bethany on top form as she races round the first corner.
37:29But crashing into the wall isn't good.
37:33Bethany fared fine in the training, but she seems to be struggling a little here with the reverse controls.
37:41Beth seems to have taken a shine to that pink rod.
37:45At least she's remembering her training.
37:47She's staying calmer than a meditating martial arts expert.
37:50Getting frustrated now would be a disaster.
37:54No bonus ball for Beth, but was it fast enough to get the red?
37:58Now James.
38:05Modest James has had a slow and steady approach to all the challenges, and it's paying off here.
38:16The seesaw and the slalom are like a Sunday drive in the Tokyo countryside.
38:25He may not have got the bonus ball, but that was a good run for sure.
38:32Perfect Paminda next.
38:34She's got three wins in a row under her blue belt.
38:37Can she make it four?
38:41It's a speedy start for Paminda.
38:48But now it looks like she's stuck faster than sushi and cement.
38:52Paminda got frustrated with her drumstick training, and she's doing the same thing here.
38:58What are those posts ever done to you, Paminda?
39:02You're making more of a mess than a sumo eating spaghetti with chopsticks.
39:11She's finally finished, but with no bonus ball, was it fast enough to get the red?
39:19Modest James told Paminda and Emma that they were overconfident in the training,
39:24but the opposite seems to be true here, as Emma nervously makes her way around the course.
39:40But now Emma's speeding faster than a bullet train.
39:48Oh, she's stuck on the post, but will she get frustrated like Paminda?
39:53Confident Emma has remembered her training and is staying calmer than a zen garden on a cloudless day.
40:01And she's even managed to get the bonus ball.
40:04Not a girl.
40:06But which of our braineas has found this a brain challenge too far?
40:22With no penalties but no bonus goal, James' time is an excellent 1 minute 53 seconds.
40:30With a time of 5 minutes 13 seconds, 2 penalties and no bonus goal,
40:35Paminda's total is 5 minutes and 23 seconds.
40:39Perfect Paminda's place in the dojo all hangs on confident Emma's score.
40:43She got 2 penalties, but got the bonus goal, giving Emma a grand total of 5 minutes and 4 seconds.
40:50She's in and Perfect Paminda is out.
41:05Walk of eternal regret.
41:09Well, I hope to get in the final 3 because I won quite a few of the challenges.
41:14I feel quite disappointed because I would have liked to get a bit further.
41:18I think that either Bethany or James will win the black belt.
41:24So with only 2 levels left, Bethany, James and Emma stand proud in red.
41:30My tactic of being concentrated and focused has helped me in this task.
41:34Now I've got so far, I've just got to try and go for the black belt and win.
41:39Brain T2!
41:42Level 6.
41:44Roll Bout!
41:46It's this level which will decide which 2 of my remaining braineys will go on to battle it out for
41:54the black belt.
41:56Imagine you're about to kick a conversion in an important rugby match.
42:00As well as remembering your technique, there might be a strong wind blowing.
42:04Plus, there's a big crowd watching you.
42:06It's remembering stuff like this under pressure that Level 6 is all about.
42:12It centres around 3 areas of the brain.
42:15The seeing part, the occipital lobes.
42:18The memory part, the temporal lobes.
42:21And the movement part, the cerebellum.
42:24To the max!
42:26Room of Mental Nourishment.
42:31With only 3 braineys remaining, this penultimate brain training challenge is all about memory.
42:39Brain training.
42:40Memorise the sequence of objects.
42:42So, in this task, our 3 remaining red belt holders are exercising their occipital lobes, or seeing part of their
42:50brain.
42:51And their temporal lobes, the memory bank.
42:53They've all gone quieter than a Japanese mouse.
42:56But has the silence worked?
42:58There's a crocodile.
42:59Crocodile, a rat, a fly swatter, some scissors.
43:06I give up.
43:08Not very impressive, James.
43:10Can confident Emma fare better?
43:12A crocodile, a rat, a fly swatter, a shovel, a frog, a ham-muffin, a fried egg, an Eiffel Tower.
43:25You're missing a few out.
43:28Emma's temporal lobes not firing on all cylinders either.
43:31Can brainy Beth and his team through them?
43:35A crocodile, a rat, a fly swatter, some scissors, a frog, a hammer, a fried egg, a chicken, a gnome,
43:48an Eiffel Tower, a toilet.
43:51That was pretty good.
43:53So, Beth's done pretty well.
43:55But let's see if the training tip can help the other two.
43:59Tip, create a story linking the objects together.
44:03There was a crocodile who met a mouse on one of his journeys out.
44:08The mouse, the rat, was scared of him, so he got his fly swatter and hit him on the head.
44:13Then the hammer, as well as knocking the animals, it knocked off an egg, which made it fried.
44:19Memory tests like this are a great way of training your brain.
44:22Next time you're out shopping, create a story out of your list and see if you can remember everything on
44:27it.
44:31But has the funny story tickled their temporal lobes into working better?
44:35There's a crocodile, a rat, a fly swatter, some scissors, a frog, a hammer.
44:43James may not be saying the story out loud, but it's obviously helped him remember the order.
44:49A toilet, some bananas, a big ogre hand, a bell, a snake, poison and a roast chicken.
44:57That was amazing. Did the story help?
45:00Yeah, quite a lot.
45:02So, James excelled in the memory training, even though he was as modest as usual about his great performance.
45:09Confident Emma was suitably impressed, but which brainy will use the tip to help them with the next challenge?
45:16And which of our two red brain belt holders will be fighting it out on the table of supreme focus?
45:22Super memory dizzy dash.
45:26Brainy is spin around on dizzy wheel, total of ten times,
45:30while using all power of focus to memorise five images in front of them.
45:35Then, must race against clock to cross balancing beam
45:40and collect five images they have not seen from the ten hanging above them.
45:47Then, must arrange in alphabetical order.
45:51When brainy happy with selection, hit the gong to stop clock.
45:57My tip for the brainy's is to keep focused on the main objective
46:02and use their training to link the five images together.
46:06So, our final three brave the wheel to compete for their brown brain belts
46:11and for a chance to triumph over the table of supreme focus.
46:15Time to spin.
46:17Will their training help our brainy's ignore the effects of the wheel and memorise the images?
46:21The order they're looking for is at the bottom of the screen now.
46:33First up is brainy Bethany, and she's on top form as she chooses the images straight away.
46:39Don't forget, not only are the brainy's under pressure as they race against the clock,
46:43but they also have to fight their dizziness to collect the five images
46:46they did not see on the wheel from the ten hanging above them.
46:51So, these are the images they saw on the wheel,
46:54and these are the images they must collect.
46:57Then, they have to arrange those images in alphabetical order.
47:01Every image they get wrong means a five-second penalty.
47:04The brainy with the slowest time will be eliminated from the dojo.
47:09Beth did pretty well in the training, and she's had a steady run here too.
47:13Ear, piano, spider, strawberry, sun, full marks.
47:19Now for James.
47:31Modest James did brilliantly in the training,
47:33and it seems he's using what he's learned here too,
47:36as he's racing through faster than a jet-propelled ninja.
47:40Don't forget that this challenge decides which of our two brainy's
47:44will go through to the final round, the table of supreme focus.
47:51Spider, strawberry.
47:52Very fast with the ardour, and he's got a full house.
47:56Now confident Emma.
47:59Emma.
48:06The spinning seems to have affected Emma's balance more than the other two,
48:09and possibly her memory as well,
48:11as she's taking her time choosing the images.
48:15Emma wasn't as strong in the training as her opponents,
48:18but she seems to have got the right images.
48:20Now, she just needs the right order.
48:24Confident Emma's almost taking longer to decide the order
48:27than it takes to walk from Osaka to Kyoto.
48:30She must remember she's racing against the clock.
48:33She's finally finished,
48:35but was it fast enough to get her the brown brain belt?
48:38Time for the results.
48:42Bethany, one minute, 27 seconds, and no penalties.
48:46A good run.
48:49James, one minute, 43 seconds, and no penalties.
48:53100% record for both brainy's.
48:56James' place in the dojo all hangs on Emma's time.
48:59One minute, 44 seconds, with no penalties.
49:02There's just one second in it,
49:04but modest James is in, and confident Emma is out.
49:10Walk of eternal regret.
49:14I'm a bit disappointed, but I'm very pleased with myself.
49:17If I were to do it again,
49:19I would try and think more of the pictures up there
49:22and less on the spinning part.
49:25So with only one level to go,
49:27it leaves just brainy Bethany and modest James
49:30to wear the brown brain belts in preparation for the final.
49:35I'm really happy that I got through to the final.
49:37I'm just going to really give it my own try.
49:39Just for me to be here, I'm just really happy.
49:44Brain Jitsu.
49:48Eight young hopeful arrived at Brain Training Dojo
49:51to fight for Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
49:54As challenges get tougher, brainy's get fewer.
49:58Some lost their cool.
50:00Others just lost out.
50:02One by one, they have been eliminated.
50:04Now, just two remain.
50:07Brainy Bethany.
50:08I'm just really amazed that I'm here in the final two.
50:12And modest James.
50:13I reckon Bethany will win it.
50:15Or if it's anything to do with things like the last couple of rounds,
50:19she will beat me.
50:19But who will use brain training to the max to win final challenge?
50:25Level seven, Black Belt.
50:29So, this is it.
50:31Between my two remaining brainy's and the black belt
50:35stands Brain Jitsu's ultimate challenge.
50:38A mental duel that is head to head in every sense.
50:42The battlefield?
50:44A table.
50:45But not just any table.
50:46For this, my friends, is the table of supreme focus.
50:51Where our two brainy's will attempt to move a ball across the table
50:55using only the power of their mind.
50:58By getting this far, they've already demonstrated mental control
51:02under many different types of pressure.
51:05But now, they must learn to focus their minds
51:07by entering a state of total calm.
51:11To prepare them, my two finalists will need to get into the zone.
51:16Room of Mental Nourishment
51:19We welcome Brainy, Bethany and Modest James,
51:22our two brown brain belt holders,
51:24to the final room of mental nourishment.
51:26For this task, our brainies must bring together all their training
51:29to achieve ultimate focus.
51:32Brain training.
51:33Mentally prepare yourself for the final task.
51:36Don't let the sounds put you off.
51:41So, our two finalists have to block out the noises
51:44and focus only on finding their inner calm and concentration.
51:49Oh, that reminds me of when you have to go to the dentist
51:52and you have to have teeth taken out
51:54and they have to drill your teeth before they can take them out.
51:58That sounds disgusting.
52:00Does that put you off the final task?
52:03Um, not really, no.
52:04Yeah, nice try, James.
52:06But here's a training tip.
52:09Tip, tense and then release individual parts of your body from head to toe.
52:16My strength is a concentration task
52:18because I can stay concentrated quite well.
52:21Now I've got so far, I've just got to try and go for the black belt and win.
52:26I think the tip did help me
52:28because instead of thinking about the noise
52:29I was thinking about releasing parts of my body
52:31and it made it easier and just easier to focus.
52:34I think you'll probably win the final task.
52:37I think you're more confident in yourself
52:39and you've done really well in all the tasks so far
52:42so I think you might win.
52:44So, both brainies think the other is going to win
52:47but who's really going to take the title
52:49and who's going to fall at the final hurdle?
52:51Let's find out.
52:53Table of Supreme Focus
52:58Rules are simple.
53:00Each brainy must push ball to their opponent's end of table
53:03using only power of mind.
53:06Sensors in brainy's headbands measure brainwaves.
53:09This is converted into electrical signal which moves ball.
53:13More focused mind, stronger signal
53:16and faster ball will travel.
53:18See how brainy's are doing on this readout.
53:22Two lines represent each player's brainwaves.
53:25Lower the line, more concentrated their mind.
53:36To make sure this is the test of all tests
53:38our brainy's must win the best of three rounds.
53:42So, this is the big one.
53:44Our two finalists must use all their brain training
53:46to enter their zone of absolute focus.
53:49This is the reason they came to the dojo.
53:52This is the moment they've been training for.
53:56The Sheehan starts them off
53:58and the mind race is on.
54:02Modest James is the first to move the ball.
54:05You can see his black line is straight and low.
54:08The ball isn't moving quickly
54:09but it's making steady progress towards his opponent's end.
54:13Bethany's green straight brainwave line
54:16is also showing a very focused mind.
54:18Can she harness all her brain training
54:20to dip her line below James' black
54:22and gain control of the ball?
54:29Ooh, so it's round one to Modest James.
54:32Can brainy Bethany find her focus in the second round
54:34to even the score?
54:47Oh, hey, Bethany put up a bit of a fight there
54:49but now James has regained control
54:52of his low black brainwave line.
54:55Looks like he's on the home straight.
55:04Well, well, that's it.
55:06It's all over.
55:07Modest James has come up trumps.
55:09He used his training to the max
55:11to prove himself a true master of the mind
55:13and worthy winner of the black belt of brain jitsu.
55:16I was just blocking everything out
55:18and just concentrating completely on the ball moving
55:21and just nothing else.
55:24Glory for one brings disappointment for another.
55:27She fought valiantly
55:28but now Bethany must leave the dojo.
55:32Walk of eternal regret.
55:36I've been very proud of myself
55:38for getting into the final two.
55:40When I was doing the table of supreme focus
55:42I was just trying to relax myself
55:45and sort of blank my mind
55:46but he seemed to be doing it, like, stronger than me
55:49so he won.
55:51So, brainy Bethany just lost out at the end
55:54but it's a triumph for modest James.
55:57Bethany and James had been pretty equally matched
56:00throughout their training
56:01but James managed to master his mind
56:03when it mattered the most.
56:05He beat Bethany two rounds to nil
56:07and grabbed the coveted black brain belt
56:10of brain jitsu.
56:11I'm just really, really happy
56:13that I won the black belt
56:14and I'm really, really proud of myself.
56:16If I could summarise how I feel
56:18in about three words
56:20it would probably be over the moon.
56:27Our journey has come to an end.
56:29Another brainy has proven themselves worthy
56:32to wear the brain jitsu black belt.
56:34But while brain jitsu might represent
56:38the most extreme form of brain training
56:40its philosophy can be shared by all.
56:44Each and every one of you
56:45has it in your power
56:47to grow your mind.
56:49All it takes
56:50is dedication
56:50and practice.
56:52This
56:53has been
56:54and
56:54a
